    I can't believe how many negative comments you have gotten on this video. I appreciate you making this video and telling us what has worked for you. Everyone's situation is different (i.e. different yaks, setups, goals, etc) so obviously what works for one may not work for another. But I don't see the need for some of these people to be so snarky with their comments. I just purchased an Old Town Topwater PDL and can't wait to get it out on Guntersville Lake for some bass fishing and Weiss Lake for some crappie fishing. It will be my first time fishing from a kayak and this video has given me some ideas on what to carry with me. Keep up the good work!

    Great video with excellent advice. One thing I would add as a safety point is when you’re waterproofing yourself, NEVER use waders. Always make sure that water can drain out the bottom of the pant legs. The reason for this is if you do flip over when wearing waders, water can get trapped inside the waders and weigh you down making it way harder to get back in the kayak. Depending on how much water gets trapped it can be next to impossible without help.

    Good video - Academy, NRS, great places to find stuff you need. Down here on the gulf coast, I also carry a handheld VHF. Even if fishing inshore, if something bad happens and you need help ASAP, a VHF radio will work when a cell phone may not. Plus, if your fishing buddies also have one, you can communicate with them on the water. Very helpful.

      @@Itchin2Fish I have two Standard Horizon HX 290's. They work well and they float. I've had them a few years, I'm sure there are newer models. You can monitor Ch. 9 and 16 while talking on another, plus they carry the NWS weather forecasts. If you need to be rescued, the USCG can home in on VHF radio - not so with a cellphone. It takes the search out of search-and-rescue.

    • @Itchin2Fish
      @Itchin2Fish  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Welcome to the kayak club! Not sure how much experience you have in kayak fishing, but what I carry is no where near what a lot of folks carry. The first part of the video is just different storage options to keep your stuff dry in one storage area. From pricey to dirt cheap. Choose which one is best for you. The only other thing I can see where you say I'm overloaded for say is my staple box. The contents of the box fits all in my center hatch under my seat. Doesn't take up any space and adds less than a pound of weight. If you leash your stuff correctly you won't lose it. If you look on my crate you will see a place where my ruler fits and leashes dangling off the side. My kayak is rated for 450 pounds. I weigh 200. Not only does kayak companies make kayaks to hold more weight for bigger guys but also for gear. I carry camera gear as well with extra batteries. Others carry that and a big drone for your viewing pleasure. Some don't need that cuz they are not filming. as you gain experience or your hobby turns into passion you will be surprised of what your kayak will look like in the future. I started with very little, but 8 years have went by and I realized I wasn't prepared or caught myself in a pinch and borrowing from my kayak peers. The other items I listed are pilers, better have those; wetsuit and boots; rod sleeves for traveling. Flash light/ headlamps for when I'm tying on a lure in the dark or paddling back to the dock for safety. If you think this is too much then you will be shocked and start asking on Facebook for pics of peoples kayaks on the water. Everyone is different and fish for different species. Some fish for a few hours and others like myself are on the water all day. This is what I needed, may be different for you. I gave folks ideas or to consider some new things. You may choose what to use but there is not a universal 10 items that you only need across the country. Everyone has different list depending on the circumstances. Just do your homework and be prepared. Tight lines and thanks for your comment.

      @@Itchin2Fish i didn't mean to discourage any one in my posts suppose im a bit excited and have searched many sites in finding best stable kayak and what is good to have on it. Ive never been in a kayak. I even got someone who has been in the kayak business for 15 years tell me to get a longer kayak cause stability is only good for beginners afterward performance and speed will be the thing to buy as a fisherman i strongly disagree and for speed i could care less i grew up in my grampa's row boat im a all day fisherman to unfornatly there are some fish i dont think i will fish for in it as for things i need i have followed closely to some vids that seemed to go hand in hand with things to not throw a bunch of stuff in the front where u will be paddeling and the wieght im 120 pounds i know the kayak can hold alot more but doesnt mean i want to pile it down i also dont have a drivers licence yet so transporting it will be much harder then most of the people who read this comment if i wanted the kayak to be heavy i would of bought a heavy one if the one i get is to slow ill slap a trolling motor on it it is customizable in the center for trolling motor for bigger lakes with out being out of energy by the time u get to your fishing spot or if u are on a river and after all day of fishing u want to use less energy just getting back to u was up river

    • @Itchin2Fish
      @Itchin2Fish  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm easy going. I didn't feel like you came off any negative way. I just wanted to give you more details. You got some great thoughts. Yeah I agree with you. Speed is less important to me than stability. The only time I ran into that was when I had a Jackson Coosa which is made for moving water, well I took it on a big lake and it was bad. So I got a kayak that is good in 90% of the waters I fish. Stay safe, wear a PFD and explore brother.

    One items I would add to this is make sure your pliers have the ability to cut hooks. I always carry a pair of linemen pliers. I encountered a guy that had hooked himself pretty bad with a treble hook for Pike and was trying to limp paddle back to his truck. He didn't have anything to cut off the barbs. I nipped them off and was able to bandage him up and pull out the hooks.

    and remember there is nothing wrong with keeping it bare minimum. just being out there and you can always upgrade if you like it. i got cheap sit on top 8 foot kayak. sure it tracks bad but im just using it on small lake off a main dammed bigger lake. but ya just got one box to hold a couple planos and soft plastics. a couple rod holders screwed to it. some rod holder leashes for when rods are sitting in the holders. box strapped to kayak with a leash to main yak and the bungees holding it from the top. thats it. i prob need to do some anchor just mainly to be on the back with a semi quick release. i couldnt find the quickest release system locally. but i did find a zig zag type cleet so ill prob just rivet that on the side quickly to reach and tie a rope from back small cleat to freely a foot past the zig zag cleat and attach the anchor with that system. i think the small lake is only around 30-40 foot deep so will probably do a 80 foot small anchor. basically probably around 150 dollars to be on top of water. oh and a cheap pdf so maybe another 20 on that. so around 170$

I have lost two pairs of pliers fishing with them falling overboard. My dad has lost two fishing poles as well. I’m this video I mentioned some cheap tips. Mainly it’s fishing poles and pilers. My last video floating over the falls, my front GoPro fell overboard, luckily I had a cheap pool noodle around the pole to keep it above water. u should speak on how to be over equipped yea safety is the top thing but when u add to many things and u spend your time on the water moving around in the kayak having to sort through a ton of stuff u will hardly ever use and the risk to flip it increases best to have a few storage areas with everything u need instead of a bunch of different boxes an bags might as well make your boat into a suit case

    • @Itchin2Fish
      @Itchin2Fish  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris Gruver example 1) you are floating on a river and you have one vehicle upstream and one down, 6 hour float total. Your seat breaks and you no longer have back support and you have 4 hours left. What would you do? 2) you are fishing in a kayak tournament on a big lake and your rudder gets loose an hour and half into the tournament. Will you say oh well didn't bring my tools so I will steer with the paddle the rest of the day or will you take an Allen wrench that you packed and re tighten the bolt and your good again. Couple of real issues that happened. Zip ties fixed my seat and I was comfy the rest of the day. Be prepared if not could ruin the rest of your day. My kayak is complex pedal drive. You don't have that so you might not need the tools I need. But your seat may break one day. Have something to fix it. Tight lines!

      rocky martin oh yeah! You have that nice hatch behind you which is great! My first kayak was a old town Vapor. Loved that kayak. It was like yours. The best thing that worked for me in staying organized was to have a small tackle bag with a shoulder strap. I would have that bag up under the nose of my kayak out of the way and when I needed something I would grab the strap between my legs and pull it to me. Worked like a charm. I would get a dry box for my valuables and place it by your seat or in your back hatch out of the way. I like keeping my phone in my life jacket with a waterproof thing around. Just in case I flip and the kayak drifts away, I can call for help vs it being in my kayak sunk or floating away. It’s good to do that with your keys and wallet too but for sure your phone.
