Too many things to make me laugh and smile!!!! “go limp” “I’ll undo your seatbelt if we are going to crash” Damian’s sideways glance when “boxster” was said by Jason for the 10th time, but the best of all was right when you are reviewing two of the most iconic cars of this generation you both get very excited over a Nissan 300 and it’s twin chrome pipes.... brilliant, just brilliant....
I went from a 997.2 GT3 to a 981 Spyder. Love BOTH! The gearbox feel is Porsche, the best and unfortunately the few we have to play with. Sound, of course, GT3! However, I was pleasantly surprised by how nice the Spyder sounded, quite aggressive. My 991.1 Turbo was no where close to the sound or fun factor. Style, subjective but the Spyder “humps” gives it and incredibly exotic/unique look especially with the top down! In conclusion, you can never go wrong with a Porsche!
You are comparing cars with different seats. The bucket seats changes the feeling of directness to the cars quite a bit. Driver is connected more with such seats. I consider this difference very similar to regular suspension vs. rose joints.
300ZX TT owner here. Just sold my gated V10 R8, looking to add either a 2018 manual GT3 or a new Spyder. I mean, this video is an extremely well timed delight! Thanks guys!!!
Fascinating comparison. I guess the one I’m interested to hear is the 4.0 Boxster (gts?) vs Spyder comparison. Which boils down to does the lightweight roof make that much of a difference.
Very unbiased conclusion (I know you are in love of the Spyder). I believe you haven't disconnected/blocked the vacuum lines yet... you should do it before making changes to the exhaust for a fair comparison afterwards
Jason stated the Spyder has a Carrera S engine, that was correct on the previos gen, GT4, the 4.0 is a new engine not used by the carrera, great video lads
Of course the GT3 is the superior one, but I wonder if the comparison misses the point. The Spyder gives you one of the most beautiful car designs and a whole lot of unadulterated sports car pleasure for far less money. In fact you could buy a Spyder for weekend pleasure and an electric car for everyday commute (e.g. VW ID.3) for less money than what you have to pay for a GT3. Is the extra bit of experience that the GT3 provides worth the premium? „Yes“ for some people, „no“ for other people - and it‘s great that Porsche provides options for different needs. In terms of sports car value for money, the Spyder/GT4 is hard to beat.
My thoughts exactly but the car guys are in a different income stratosphere. If I was filthy rich, I would have the GT3T and a Boxster GTS 4.0. As it is I daily a Mini SE and my 981 BGTS is my weekend car. It turns out to be cheaper in the wrong run than dailying my Porsche due to lower insurance, running costs and depreciation. Plus the Mini SE is very fun in its own way.
Yes actually u can and u should. They only way to reverse this EU over regulation madness is to put pressure on companies by not buying their products.... In the end they will "cooperate" and find a viable solution.

love this comparison video D&J this is great work, the GT3 is a drivers car high water mark. I agree that with the "not a Boxster" - "you absolutely have to get an after market exhaust" however I'd say to any owners looking in, first check with Porsche about the cars warranty before fitting one, it's a dilemma set to face all future GT cars unfortunately, making the 991.2 first batch, those produced up to around mid 2018, the must have GT car.
Saturday morning ( I'm in Oz) and what's the first thing I do, watch the Car Guys newest adventure. Great review. Good to see the tdf is still in the garage.
Interesting. I was surprised there was such a difference as I thought the Spyder and GT4 were meant to have been developed by the motorsport division in Weissach like the GT cars, and even to have some GT3 running gear.
Always watch your videos first if there’s a new one in the list because it bloody entertaining and informative too. Great banter between you guys. Keep them coming. Oh and fab cars too 👍
Try the cargraphic electronic exhaust valve mod? Looks good sounds great without altering the original exhaust, or just go for a full system and headers? 🤷🏼♂️
Well done! I previously had the 991.1 GT3 and the previous GT4, and now have a 991.2 Touring and waiting for the GT4 RS with PDK - I have been waiting 5+ years to "swap" transmissions between my two cars - almost there!
Great video guys I'm loving the Spyder a.k.a. Boxster. But I have noticed a continuity error as at 3.46 you are not wearing the Tudor black bay.... but it is a cracking watch
I guess i will rain on your parade then. :D I owned both, Touring already sold Spyder will go next. Both are maybe the purest Porsche can do these days with all the regulations and such but they are no where close to the 997/987 generation when it comes to pure driving fun. Touring got replaced by 992 4S and a 997 GT3 RS 3.8. Sypder will be replaced by a E46 M3 CSL manual conversion. Cya! ;-)
Have you heard about the sharkwerks gear ratio options for the spyder? Makes the gearbox a shorter shift and apparently transforms the driving experience.
Damian, the 718 GT4 is no more a Cayman than the 718 Spyder is a Boxster. Loved the comparo. A comment you didn't make is that the GT3 Touring is an all-weather car where the Spyder is really only suitable for fair weather, unless you like getting wet!
I can heartily recommend the full ti akrapovic system for your touring. The one with the side and center mufflers. Also, the Spyder doesn’t just need an exhaust. It needs headers as well, that’s where the OPF sits.
Thank you gentlemen. Stay safe guys coz i need my weekly fix of Car Guys...In stage 4 lockdown here so need all i can get to keep me from going bonkers. Cheers
Great video Damian and Jason, thanks for the fantastic content. Is the GT3 Touring worth 2 Spyders ?? I think if i was heading to Penzance for a evening drive I would take the Spyder ! Having problems with those brown seats I am afraid Damian - sorry not sorry !
Here's a 1st world problem question for you guys: enjoy a GT3 Touring and a Spyder or a own only a Speedster? I never made the cut to order a Speedster, but was able to order my Touring and, like you, love it and won't sell it except for the right Speedster. In the futility of the search for a convertible, I have considered doing exactly what you did since the investment is about the same. I haven't seen you weigh in on the idea of a Speedster. Thoughts?
I do like the look of the Boxter (sorry Spyder). On sunny days like we’re having now, driving through the New Forest with the roof down is what’s it’s all about. The GT3 is a beast and a wise choice for a daily.
@@plife911 P I got the Spyder Coming in July … what you recommend ? Which exhaust kit ? There seems to be too many opinions on this … what your thoughts the motor sound soft huh ? Had both cars Guys..and I must say think your right but I love my 718 Spyder and it helps saving some of your valuable points on your driving licence because it’s just not as insanely fast at the top of the rev range. 😊
Couldn’t stop laughing when Jason just can’t stop saying “Boxster” - but luuuurrve the GT3 touring. The Spyder is probably the best looking car from Porsche at the moment - would love to know how it compares to 981 Spyder. For my money , a manual Gallardo Spyder for my open top thrills. OPF filters are killing noise but also engines themselves that are made in compliance with new regulations. This is really frustrating because it means we are not seeing the pinacle of what can actually be made in 2020, which would obviously be much better than what is currently being released under very restrictive regulations.
Would’ve thought the Spyder had better steering feel, feedback, and turn in. Although not GT cars, I’ve had a 718 GTS and now a 991.2 GTS and felt that the 718 was a little better. Did both cars have the same alignment setup? Are you sure the GT3 doesn’t have more front negative camber? You can obviously check the front 3 strut mounting bolts to see if ones farther to one side than the other.
I would question why you’d have the fixed back seats? They look great, but are too firm for comfort, hard to get in and out of, and make it difficult to utilise all the space in the back. The standard sports seats are awesomely comfortable and offer more than enough support. Get the bucket seats in your RS and then make use of the harness holes.
You changed watches DB 😜. An insta friend has changed exhaust on his Spyder . Think you’re using same firm. Very good now 👍🏻. If I needed a soft top Spyder , the 981 is a great car at £65k
From an entertainment perspective it's good to see a comparison, it would be great to understand more about the dynamics rather than just gearbox and steering. Mid engine Vs rear. And question for you, is the GT3 really the better car on the road at modest speeds, or does it still feel exciting even though you are even further away from its limits?
My two favourite modern Porsche’s. Thanks for the review and I’d agree the GT3 is definitely the best, though I’d be more scared to daily that for fear of destroying the value (and probably crashing it as it’s so bloody fast). Did Jason say the Spyder has the normally aspirated Carrera S engine? I thought that was the previous Spyder and this one has the 992 engine, minus the turbo and bored out to 4.0 and some of the GT3 adjustable suspension which the previous one didn’t have. Anyway, love these cars and even though the particulate filter muffles the Spyder’s noise, it still sounds way better than the four cylinder Boxsters.
Great video - being a viewer considering both purchases (GT4 or used 991 gt3). One comparison was not done, it was expressed that the Spyder suspension is very firm, how does the GT3 T firmness compare? Also vertebrae crunching? I drove the cayman GTS for a number of days so I have a point of reference so really interested to know. Cheers 🥂
Great show guys! 911 targa purchased! I love it! Would the targa GTS be a better rival for the ‘spyder’? Maybe Porsche should over a GT3 targa touring! Not the purest but sound track with the best looks for a 911?
I own a GT3 Touring and a 2018 911 Cabriolet. I previously owned a 2016 Spyder. The Spyder is so so good that I have a new one coming and will sell the 911 Cab.
So basically you need a 911 4.0ltr speedster with carbon ceramics manual ? That way you get the best of both worlds with the roof down ? All boils down to that cracking 9000rpm Revving engine and sharper gear box , if money’s not a issue the speedster is the one for summer fun , but saying that I recon that boxster will still give that gt3 touring a hard time on some good twisty roads driven correctly with those cup 2s and Carbon ceramic brakes .. would love a 4.0ltr gt3 engined 500bhp boxster spyder keep the videos coming lads all good stuff ....
Great video! Different cars and the conclusion doesn't surprise me. However I noticed in your other GT3 touring video you said that car hasn't been driven lately because you've been driving the Spyder all the time. Does that mean you enjoy driving the Spyder more often than the GT3?
How about a review comparing the F355 Spider your 718 Spyder as a “drivers” car. The cost is broadly similar - especially if you budget for some servicing. For a car to enjoy at the weekends only, might the F355 be a better buy (for those brave enough to manage the service costs)?
It's just struck me how much the Spyder's standard exhaust sounds low down like that farty buzz you get from an M4 or the latest Fiesta ST. I hope the new exhaust helps the tone 🤞🏻
Great video!!! Your seats are beautiful!!! Love the brown leather. I suggest that you take the center armrest to seat guy and match it with the same leather. It would enhance the overall interior appearance!!!!
Damian, the sideways look you gave Jason when he said ‘Boxster’ in the summing up in the GT3 was priceless!
Platypus Hatstand Thanks for noticing 👍
GT3 Touring is the sweet spot as far as I’m concerned. Understated looks, manual gearbox, last NA GT engine pre particulate filters. Perfection 👌🏼

Following this comparison I am looking forward to the next - Ferrari 458 versus Fiat x1/9 I have no idea which one will win.
Great video! Different cars and the conclusion doesn't surprise me. However I noticed in your other GT3 touring video you said that car hasn't been driven lately because you've been driving the Spyder all the time. Does that mean you enjoy driving the Spyder more often than the GT3?
Only when the sun is shining . So all GT3 at the moment
How about a review comparing the F355 Spider your 718 Spyder as a “drivers” car. The cost is broadly similar - especially if you budget for some servicing. For a car to enjoy at the weekends only, might the F355 be a better buy (for those brave enough to manage the service costs)?
Do you still have to drop the motor for a spark plug change?😹
Too true - GT3 is a truly awesome motor car. Damien my thumbs up was number 666 (spooky) :)
It's just struck me how much the Spyder's standard exhaust sounds low down like that farty buzz you get from an M4 or the latest Fiesta ST. I hope the new exhaust helps the tone 🤞🏻
It should
Has the Spyder actually been broken in fully?
Yep
Illuminating.
Needed more than one wrist watch check
😂😂😂
Spyder spec with those seats looks epic! Great video Sirs ! 🙏
Great video!!! Your seats are beautiful!!! Love the brown leather. I suggest that you take the center armrest to seat guy and match it with the same leather. It would enhance the overall interior appearance!!!!
