I built a 1915 for my 59 Ghia. Put a taller 4th gear in the trans because i drove 56 one-way to work on state hwy I44. 22mpg with a 125hp @ the wheels. I loved driving that car.

Watching these technical videos reminds me why I used to like building engines, stock or otherwise. Ever do a backyard grind on a 3 horse Briggs & Stratton cam? Fun, but should have left the governor speed at 3600. I was lucky it threw the rod before the flywheel exploded. Sure cut the long grass at my friends family cabin though. Ahhhh the good old days

darin i remember you told us on heads to make sure that the valves are all even with straight edge . well i got new heads from fisher buggies in tampa did not check them there. so wen i got home i though of checking them before installing them. the last valve was at least quarter inch if not more lower then others. took it back 80 miles from inverness and they took all their heads from stock and could not find any of them all even! so i ended up taking the 2 best ones that they had . i asked if they were going to tell their supplier in Miami and they said they would ? anyhow i installed them on my 1600 dual port, i must say that it runs better then great with one valve higher then others on each side , of course they all are set at six thousands . thank you darin i come here once a while to get a little more knowledge then i have on VW. i took the hobby about six years ago , learn everyday 4 sure.

Very clear explanation of how the stuff wrks and whats really going on in an engine. This info applies to 99% of all 4 stroke engines. You have more knowledge than most as to whats going on inside to make power. Cams are mysterious to most folks. Looking forward to CCing the heads, that Scooter is somethin, lucky you had him. I built a lot of high end motors in my days as an engine machinist in a speed shop , but we never had one VW. I just love this series Darrin, thanks. Cigar Captain

In the Navy we learned that Torque=Horspower @ 5252 RPM. Meaning your motor will make 1 HP / FT-LB of torque at that speed. As Darrin explained if your motor can breathe well enough to spin-faster and keep breathing well the Horsepower can really climb even if torque remains relatively flat.

very informative about the heads, alot of things you mentioned I use to create power in my 16hp Kohler engine for my pulling tractor, the only diff is my motor is a L-head the valves and springs are in the block...

    Really interesting video.
It's a shame I don't have a volkswagon to apply the information to but I've got enough things that I haven't finished cluttering up the place as it is lol.
Good luck at the bone doctor tomorrow Darrin.
    Regards,
    Brad.

Im looking to increase the compression ratio I have 54cc cly heads and the deck height was between 60 and 70 thousands on my 1915. Can the cylinders be machined to allow them to go deeper into the case? Or should I have the cylinder heads machined?
I am looking for about an 11 to 1 final CR.
This will be a NA engine on race fuel.
Thanks as every article I read they always lower the CR with the shims but never raise the CR.

i am new to vw engines , have a 1600 air cooled , using only double spring valves , and bigger pistons (94) and maybe aluminium push rods and another type of camshaft, will produce any effect on the kW . or have to do work on the ports, around here think no people to that kind of work in a proper way.
very nice videos . any idea what should i do to increase the engine HP

So if my number 3 valve is tight no matter how much I loosen it is a good chance that my valve seat is bad

Do you fly cut your own heads I bought a fly cutter and looking for video as guide to use mine
I can get it centered but the hole was uneven when I finished not by much ..003-004
    thanks great videos

Unlevel I stopped before cutting all the way to check it about .004 difference from one side to the other
I figure the flat side if the cutter would turn in like the cylinder does but is opposite of the leveling screw it's a junk head for practice

ive used them a couple times they are not bad i didnt have any failures with them but the cb performance heads make more power and they sorta killed the market for other cylinder heads in there price range....both are good quality just think cb is faster..there are a few different versions of the mofoco
