  • Sonic Youth cofounder Kim Gordon and Sleater-Kinney's Carrie Brownstein sat down for a sprawling and hilarious conversation to promote Kim's new memoir Girl In A Band. Watch the two alt-rock veterans battle awkward silences and giggles to discuss Gordon's time in Sonic Youth, bass guitar inspiration and the weird idea of being labeled a "girl in a band."

Some people are thinking Kim is superficial and uninsteresting judging by this interview, but she's actually just a very low key and reserved person who clearly wasn't very comfortable in this situation.
I highly recommend reading "girl in a band" because the book offers a great perspective on how amazing her persona and history is.

Luiz- she is totally kinestetic. It’s how she relates to other people, how she processes outside stimulation, and the world that surrounds her. She is deeply physical and feels things like her art and her connection to the world. She comes across as stand-offish and uninterested but what’s really going on is she is having a hard time connecting to people. It’s not on purpose, it’s how she is wired. Someone who is also kinestetic could comprehend, understand, communicate, and connect with her quite easily

Kim Gordon is a visual artist, a vocalist, bassist, mother, writer, sorceress, erotic film producer and starlet of so many lesser gifted production visionary art people, a morning star, a rock star, a mammalian trailblazer, a true friend to friends, model, spokes model, and she'll bury us all!!👻

I met Kim in 91 outside Auburn Mills. I was the only one who noticed her. I could tell she knew I knew who she was, but I said nothing. I didn't want to bug her by saying hello and regardless I was just staring to peak on magic mushrooms. I was playing pinball a few hours later and she came by and I just said a few things and she laughed and was really cool. Back then it was so different. No cell phones fuck all. I miss it. 91-94 in college ruled. Kim is on such a higher level than Carrie here when it comes to explaining the performance art aspect of music.

Cool story. I agree about the wavelength thing here: Carrie is obviously very smart and has her signature witty awkwardness, and came at Kim with all of that intellect. And Kim was just like: "Practice? In art-making, you can call your art "practice," but...you're in your studio and you're developing ideas and you're following a thread of what you're interested in." Boom. NOT the typical or conventional way of approaching a creative medium (hello: it's Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth...), so I wish there was a bit of space to appreciate that statement and her insight.

interesting to hear Kim's thoughts on Soundcloud. showing her age there a bit. obviously its lo-fi and they are "dabblers", but it IS music in 2015, you wont get physical media or big production playing guitars as a new band these days. was hoping she'd be a little more progressive and in touch with the "why's" of Soundcloud.

    • @roundart

Nah, Sonic youth have always been advocates of the DIY aesthetic, in art and music . If you read between the lines, I think the idea of uploading songs rather than actually playing live and slinging physical media could be seen as a cop out. Especially using someone else's fame to push your music. That being said, don't a large percentage of bands have some sort of SoundCloud presence?

The most interesting parts in "Girl In A Band" are the descriptions of her early life in LA. The relationship with her brother is beautifully written, almost enchanting. Many other parts of the book look like a therapy journal, badly edited (there are many repetitions, the most evident one is right on the last page). Kim Gordon is, anyway, an icon. Maybe an unaware one.

Kim Gordon is rad. I don't know why there is so much hate about her interview. She has put out so much art and music through the years. What have any of you done for culture? She actually made a difference in the world and made people feel good. Again, what have any of you done? Carrie Brownstein is indeed an underrated guitarist. Both of those bands kick ass live. Instead of criticizing artists, maybe do something yourself first. She can say whatever the fuck she wants. She's earned it.

most of the people in to comments tend to think she's a feminist and just get triggered at the fact she keeps expressing her own opinions about women in music and bands overall. I dont care, she's still badass at singing and I'm happy she's got a second career in art.

I loved being on-stage with these musicians back in the day/90"s because they are so f*ckN cool. But I was there as a fan and a anthropological participant and a teenage boy and I just thought they were both bands were f*ckN GREAT ROCK N ROLL.

I love her and Sonic Youth, but I would not call he "strong". I don't mean to disparage her accomplishments. Golda Meir - strong. Mother Theresa - strong. Hillary Clinton - strong. Kim Gordon - laughing hysterically here at who knows what, and giving answers often inaudibly, that are often not even complete sentences.

I don't think Riot Grrl had that much to do with it...it was the bands, since the concept moved so far away from what Riot Grrl originally was. If by Riot Grrl you mean girl bands who know stage lighting, sound, and recording from another grrl band, then that should be inspiring.Or you could be referring to the West Oly neighborhood bands in the nineties--go Sleater-Kinney! Kathleen and I knew about that band because we lived off Sleater-Kinney highway for a year. You couldn't be more local if you named yourselves Smithfield Cafe.

in no way can Richard Hell and Sid Vicious be compared, imo. Richard could and did write catchy, memorable, melodic basslines and great lasting songs. Sid did not. He was a stand in for Glen Matlock, who we could compare to Hell as a writer and player. the only realm in which Hell and Sid can compare is in the spikiness of hair, dress and heroin intake, of which Hell introduced first, and in that case Sid still cannot hold a candle to Hell.

Maybe having been signed to a record label for the past 3 decades has skewed her perspective?, but Soundcloud (and Bandcamp) give un-signed artists an opportunity to get their music out into the world. Every kind of music I can imagine is represented on Soundcloud! Perhaps it's an ignorant comment (I hope so). Love you Kim!

+Stephen Randall That's because Kim and Sonic Youth came from the era of Underground music everything done analog not digital, music was passed around from word of mouth or small bits in magazines etc etc..
Older bands could have benefit a lot with soundcoud, internet their music would of reached more fans. Plus, these bands I listened too, can have that second comeback. You know the term Reunion.
Today's bands do have an edge over the older bands thanks to the internet, but some do rediscover these older bands thanks to their older siblings & **cough** parents.

Kims lack of knowledge on some of the stuff she talks about is epic.
Less interested in reading the book now.

+bigbigsound I can't tell you how turned off I am after hearing this interview. I get it - she's "low key", but come the fuck on. Is there ANYTHING she is sure or confident about, after 3 decades or more as an artist. I am close to the end of the interview, and I've enjoyed it, but she seems like she doesn't care about anything, really - just without passion. I don't know.

Kim Gordon's book tour interviews only confirm what I've been suspecting about her for years: she's neither smart nor interesting. Sorry to be a hater but I'm just calling it as I see it. Her reputation has always amounted to being a symbol of good taste more than anything else, and her inept interviews only reveals the lack of substance and ideas in her work, her connections to art world elites notwithstanding.

Asim Hussain It's entirely possible to be a brilliant musician and an airhead, or a rock goddess pioneer and an a-hole, at the same time.

ERIC VITALE Agreed. I think Kim is way overrated, Thurston Moore and Lee Renaldo were who made Sonic Youth great. Sorry Kim fans.

ERIC VITALE I highly recommend her book if you really want to get a deep insight into her personality and career. I'm sure you'll change your suspections once you've done it.

lhrttz I've read it and I agree with you. She has considerable insight into herself and why she is the way she is, and when you get done the book you come away a pretty good idea/sense/ of and feeling for another human being. imhop. That might have happened by accident, but probably not, because it is hard to accomplish.
