    Gordon's said of NYC in the 80's “That city I know doesn’t exist anymore, and it’s more alive in my head than it is when I’m there.”
    That applies to every happening place in the 80's.

      +misstreebird Being from Huntsville in the 80s, it happened to all the non-happening places too...although now, damn! Was I in a happening place??

      +Alexander Delarche As they said in the 80's, L A's THE PLACE....although anythen was better when, I imagine...
      to quote my fave power trio "anywhere but here, anytime but now"...

      So yes, everywhere we went was happening then :)

    Kim Gordon opened the door to many women artists. This is never an easy position to be in but refreshing and encouraging in a world dead to original thought. Thanks Kim you literally rock!

    Saw Sonic Youth live back in 05.. Front up against the stage. Kim was to my left and Thurston was to my right. She was electric! I could have litteraly reached out and touched the guitar pedals.. that is how close. Greatest experience ever, and I got to meet her and Lee after the show. She was very sweet, and Lee was cool asf.

    Kim Gordon and Aimee Mann having a chat. Too cool. PS I watched Kim headline Lollapalooza 95' right after Hole played and half the crowd left. Hole was great but those people missed out because Sonic Youth were incredible.

    she's not name dropping. she actually met and befriended these people long before fame. artists are not poor people.
    they are usually lower/middle upper class. even the bohemians. Ginsberg's father was a school teacher.

    How do you complain about being asked about what it's like to be a woman in rock but then immediately launch into a discussion about what it's like to be a woman in rock? It's like: let's celebrate women in rock without talking about them being women in rock. Because that would be offensive (somehow).
    Also, this is like a completely different person than the one who was interviewed by Carrie Brownstein (also on TH-cam). She couldn't even put a thought or two sentences together in that one.

    Lost girl grows up middle class, basically pleasant looking, marginally talented "artist" becomes marginally successful musician without an outstanding voice or instrumental ability, (insult to all actual bassists- this woman claims she had a problem breaking her bass strings- wtf?), makes mediocre rock music that evolves to 6-aspirin "noise rock", writes confessional, name-dropping memoir of vague self importance to excoriate disinterested husband and claim victory. Oh, and she had a clothing line of ironic t-shirts that were modeled by herself and her famous friends, let's not forget that. Her slender book is, as she says herself- "Kind of a weird journey". Yeah, a woman wronged is always right, that explains everything. Ah, the crimes committed in the name of "Art". Enjoy your worshipped "elder-stateswoman" book tour, followed by a life of monied art making, Ms. Gordon, this should be the finale. You're not a girl anymore. You're not in a band. You're a grandma in a black leather jacket, and you know everybody wants to see that. If I was Thurston I'd move to the desert.

    • @misstreebird
      @misstreebird 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Franz Kafka Well I guess many fans of hers sonic youth - yoko ono - courtney/hole may disagree. I just came to hear Aimee. I'd like to hear her answer her own questions, enjoyed her thoughts & sentiments shared. Ms. Gordon's words are also telling to me - she didn't write her own lines, but picked them out of books - nice to give credit where it's due! Honest I don't really know what all you're on about, sounds like much interest vested in Ms. Gordon, whatever. Actually even Aimee's lost me here, so, hope you have a great day anyway peace

    • @franzkafka77
      @franzkafka77 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My issue with her is about lowered expectations. I read her book and was struck by the number of right time right place aspects of her life. There are far better instrumentalists, much better vocalists, a million better artists, and so how does this woman wander reluctantly into such worshipped stardom? The book title says it all. It's gender pioneer status and nothing more really. Imagine if she had actually been really talented, could write melodies or was a virtuoso musician. Would Thurston Moore have left her or would it have been the other way around? And please, now that one is aging cover up at least a little.

    • @misstreebird
      @misstreebird 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Franz Kafka Some are born lucky, others not so much, some may take for granted what others yearn to touch. She'd not be the first to have rid on others' coat-tails, & some make time in some places. Well she obviously got the looks at one time, who knows? Maybe she doesn't notice, or care, who does? We all lose our charms in the end; of course men aren't judged so harshly as they mature. Except the weight. & then not *as* harshly, but yes, especially men who may be desired somewhat for their looks, when they get heavy become subject to ridicule, albeit not so much as women.
      I'm not sure who left/would have left who, obviously wasn't built to last anyway & lacking sufficient impetus to maintain a relationship, left I'm guessing only an impression of graceless disrespect. Sad but then if it was too challenging to love eachother, I'm not surprised it'd be beyond them to realize an end amicably. I'm guessing ~
      How would you dress her?

      @franzkafka77 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not like the rock and roll 20 something she used to be, that's for sure. Modesty is still a virtue I hope. She seems desperate. Sad.

      When one takes a stage one invites criticism, and all kinds of comments. Kim Gordon says this in her book. It is actually one of the few salient moments where what she writes is fairly authentic and original. Maybe you should read it.
