It's really depressing to read that excerpt from Kim's memoir. Shame it ended like that. On a more lighter note, really awesome they played so many songs from Bad Moon Rising.
Yeah, absolutely heartbreaking. If I'm not mistaken Moore greets the audience by saying "I can't wait to see you again", and this will be the last time for them. Really sad.
I had liked them marginally since Goo came out in '90, but '95 was the year they became my favorite band that was still around at the time. Thurston had released Psychic Hearts earlier in the year, which I fell in love with. That made me dig deeper into SY's catalog, at the time when DGC was reissuing all their pre-Goo indie releases. Then I saw them open for R.E.M. a few months later, where they previewed all these great songs that would end up on Washing Machine that fall. Then that album came out and became an instant favorite. That sealed it for me. 🤘 I miss this band. 😥
Final show, from the band most egregiously snubbed by the Rock Hall since '07. Alternative and indie rock (etc.) would be completely different without their profound influence, in addition to having the coolest woman ever as a member. 🤘 You can tell they knew this was their last one, which can make it hard to watch. But they sound pretty damn great, with an amazing setlist. RIP SY.
@@curly_wyn I honestly cannot tell if your joking. Pavement put in just as much (if not slightly more) emotion and effort into their music as sonic youth, if you think they don’t you probably haven’t listened to more than a couple songs.
I learned how to eat really good, expensive French donuts, reading Uncle Kin's moomoirs. But I had to read it backwards in France language, back in Jr. High, OR ELSE!
In my opinion, I don't think Thurston knew. Kim definitely knew. Because after they announced their divorce, anytime a reporter asked Moore if they were going to put out another album, he said yes and that him and Kim just needed to work some things out. Guess he thought that Kim just needed time and then would accept this new relationship. Very idealistic but not a chance in hell! He kept saying this for a few years, then they all moved on with their solo projects. I love Kim's new music where she features their daughter, CoCoa. Very sick beats and I love it!
never understood why they got another bass player involved. Was it because Kym was looking to leave? Thurston had regrets about his affair and was trying to keep th band alive without Kym. Kym wanting to dance more I've read before, WOW in this concert she sings most songs. Lee might be looking to split the band and take the talent with him? WOW. thank god for sonic youth and the 5 times Ive seen them live. Making Kym sing Brave men run first up at their last gig is fuckin cruel.
They got the extra bass player because Thurston wanted Kim to sing more. It's from her book that she had written in 2015, a few years after Thurston and Kim divorced. Kim knew that this was there last concert as Sonic Youth. Unfortunately, Thurston thought that after their divorce, they would somehow get back together as a band. He was sadly mistaken. He erred egregiously and I totally would not go back to playing with my ex who flaunted his affair in her face. What a dick he turned out to be. But, nowadays, Kim looks more relaxed and happier. Although she was hurt over the affair and that the other woman wouldn't leave Thurston alone and he couldn't leave her alone, Kim probably has realized that she didn't have to carry the man-child's B.S. anymore. She's awesome! Very talented woman who many young females became bassists. She's a legend. Thurston, not so much.
They brought in Mark after Jim left because they really liked the sound they had with three guitars and a bass (or two guitars and two basses). It didn't have anything to do with the affair or anything like that.
Why would you say that Kim should get over six years of Thurston cheating on her? And I get that she's over him. She just doesn't want to play in a band with him. She's been working with Bill Nace and doing independent music. The divorce happened 12 years ago. She looks better now than she did in her 40's and 50's. She got over Thurston Moore and Sonic Youth. Why would she go back after all the guys in the group were not very supportive of her during this last concert knowing that their divorce paperwork came through right before this concert. That's why she looks like she's been crying. She knew her 28 years of marriage was over with and so was their 30 years of playing in Sonic Youth.
Don’t know Sonic Youth that well for I didn’t have much up with the alternative/grunge scene as a teen in the 90’s. Still don’t for that matter. Funny how our brains works. Some people can have that non-funded repulsive effect on you in this case that Thurston Moore dude distgustes me to the core right of the bat. His cloths, his cocky act, his hair, his limited playing. 🤮 Probably says more about me than about him, never met him so I’m just biased and maybe even completely unjustified. Just my opinion. :)
It's rare to find a band with a 30 year history who never learned how to play their instruments or write a listenable song. They only lasted as long as they did because of the pretentious betas that heaped undeserving praise upon them.
Kim Gordon is an absolute warrior. So sad Sonic Youth ended like this.
I love that the last performer to leave the stage at the last ever Sonic Youth show is from Pavement.
Haaaaa 😂
Reading the excerpt from Kim's memoir down here, its directly clear to see her suffering doing this performance...what an artist!
Absolutamente
I would say she held it together like a pro . Shout out to the noise goddess Kim Gordon! ❤
It's really depressing to read that excerpt from Kim's memoir. Shame it ended like that.

With all of the context Kim's voice on Brave Men Run is heartbreaking
Isn't this where she mentions the shoulder tapping incident at the start?
@@benadams1661 yes. this, and thurston pretending to be surprised when the guitar tech gives him the guitar to start the set.
....and that was the end of Sonic Youth😥
Dude give Thurston's Rock n roll consciousness a listen it's as good or better than sy
Final show
For their final show they finally came to brazil
Heartbreaking, knowing what must have been going on in the background.
Yeah, absolutely heartbreaking. If I'm not mistaken Moore greets the audience by saying "I can't wait to see you again", and this will be the last time for them. Really sad.
Bittersweet and powerful perfomance. Real raw emotion here. Kim is badass
the end of an era
best band ever. i am transported by their dynamic to vivid memories of lollapalooza 95 and every other Toronto show they played after that.

I was there! Their final show... I remember Steve Shelley absolutely killing on the drum set
He always does ❤
He killed it his entire career
Shit happens. I love Kim and Thurston more than any other artists. Love them 4ever. Long live Sonic Youth 💘💘💘💘
Kim Gordon is such a badass! I just LOVE her!!! Great author as well.
Farewell, Sonic Youth 🕯
I LOVE This Band......
Mark seems as sad as last concert of Pavement in 1999 at the Brixton academy...
I hate Pavement. Sonic Youth at least had ethos behind their music. Pavement is jus insufferable noise.

Beautiful opener, totally fell in love with that riff as soon as I first heard it on my first listen of BMR - underrated record
Yeah, we should not speak of ❤❤
Clima tenso!

last show?
the concert followed the separation of Gordon and Moore
Yes
There’s a new girl in your life
32:05 Thurston sounds tired exhausted, maybe slightly "drinky" and probably sad because he knows its the END,
Who else needs a Sonic Youth reunion? I hope Thustoon reconciles with Kim.
If freaking Oasis are reunited, Sonic Youth is just a matter of time
@@kdexter13 I don't think so, Kim Gordon is very focused on her solo career and it ended very badly with her ex-husband Thurstoon Moore.

Yeah, Thurston Moore grosses me out too and I was into the grunge scene pretty heavy in the '90's. His pseudo-intellectial B.S. really bugged me.
Thank your for sharing.
