Supreme Court vs. Shariah: AIMPLB to Challenge Landmark Verdict on Maintenance for Muslim Women

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) adopted a resolution criticizing a recent Supreme Court judgment that allows Muslim divorcee women to seek maintenance under Section 125 of the CrPC. The board contends that the ruling contradicts Islamic law (Shariah) and has pledged to work towards overturning it. The AIMPLB argues that the judgment complicates matters for women who have sought divorce due to difficult marriages, emphasizing teachings attributed to the Prophet regarding marriage preservation. Additionally, the board questions the rationale of requiring maintenance from a man after the marriage is dissolved. AIMPLB also called for an end to new disputes under the Places of Worship Act, 1991, urging resolution of existing controversies related to religious sites.
