    The writing of GoT plays a lot with breaking the rule of three. They do it another noticeable time in season Six: Battle of the Bastards. When Ramsey shoots at Rickon he fires three times, misses three times. The design of that is to trick us as the audience into believing Jon will make it to Rickon. The rule is three, and Ramsey missed, so Rickon will be fine, the audience relaxes. Except that fourth shot that takes him through the chest and without knowing, the devastation is so much worse for the death because they 'broke the rules'. It's designed to take us to a false sense of security by manipulating the established structure. They break the rules and thus break our perception of the situation.

    • @kevinw712
      @kevinw712 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The way they accomplish that does seem like a little bit of a cheat however, as the true kill shot seems to kind of come a bit unrealistically quicker after the last 'failed' attempt, but not like plenty of movies and shows haven't played some with time in that way before. Also as Sansa tries to make clear the night before, there was just about literally no scenario in which they were going to come out of that with Rickon still living, technically it was more important Ramsay kill him than Jon.
      EDIT: this idea only just hit me now too. I wonder if Ramsay had at all considered taking a much smaller group of men and just stealthily attacking their camp during the middle of the night, like they did with Stannis. Go in with the aim of killing Jon (not sure if he'd specifically want Sansa still alive at that point if they could kill her) and I guess like Davos and Tormund, too. it's totally his style.

      @robbieh.1384 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kevinw712 the time difference was also them breaking with structure, only this time they had established the structure themselves, which was the time between shots. But this “rule” was also “broken” because if you remember Ramsay was being intentionally painfully slow notching his arrows and pulling back the bow and taking the shot each time..the last time he just took a kill shot showing Jon he had been missing intentionally all along, and in the process Jon had done the one thing he was cautioned against: Charging into the middle of the battlefield and Ramsay has the added benefit of Jon being within arrow range, AND, if his men don’t want to see him slaughtered they now must rush into waves of arrows.

    Love your videos just thought I'd let you know, I think Ramsay also sent those men after Theon because they were his Fathers loyal men, not his. So he could cut them down, blame theon and not have men loyal to his father reporting back to roose about his activities.

    • @kevinw712
      @kevinw712 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      well first to most directly address part of what you said (a whopping 7 months before I'm making my reply here, so I'm sure you'll get right on reading it lol), but does that come with a perception that you don't think Roose already has a pretty good idea what kind of person his son is? I mean it does seem like maybe they tried to have it both ways a little, because when they do that one transition of Roose telling Robb "My bastard... has his own way of doing things" and cut to what we know's been going on awhile, but then also of course when Roose finally returns home he does seem some level of upset at what's been done.
      But I just remember when I was first watching this, especially not being a book guy, I felt like it took me SO friggin long to truly catch up and sink in what the whole thing was. I mean maybe I'm just kinda slow, but for it to be that holy shit, he went thru (I think at least still in some significant part even accepting what you're saying) that whole play acting thing, and all of it really, just so that he had something "fun" to do. What. the. FUCK. But, I guess D&D also obviously knew Joffrey would be dying at the start of season 4 (that shocked me way more than the Red Wedding did, which already was a lot), and this whole scenario does set up the high level of batshit crazy villain that Ramsay will be in the larger story.

    I'm rewatching the series to show it to my girlfriend and we just passed this episode. I'm really looking forward to watching these reviews with the episodes so fresh in my mind. This is such a great revisit of the show and you guys are awesome as ever. One thing that I missed in this episode on my first watch was the shade that Varys throws Littlefinger during the small council meeting at the beginning; "In Stark's absence, Roose Bolton holds Harrenhal... which would make him Lord of Harrenhal, in practice if not in name," all the while basically laughing right at Littlefinger and poor Littlefinger is not even looking at him - just fucking grimacing and trying not to feed the troll. Absolutely hilarious.

    I remember being on my toes when I saw the end of the intro say Directed By David Benioff. So glad I wasn’t the only one that felt that way about the end credits. I agree it should of went straight to silence with Jaime’s scream sounding more distant the longer the screen went to black with silent credits or at least a really lulled theme playing slower and quieter through the end. It really took me out of the moment.

    • @noneofyourbeeswax01
      @noneofyourbeeswax01 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well to be fair our introduction to Jamie was when he threw a child off a tower apparently in order to protect his and his sisters' incestuous affair. When viewed through the lens of passed time however, the cat, whilst just as reprehensible, increasingly seems as much a protection of lives as a destroyer of one, given that the revelation would almost certainly have resulted in the deaths of Jamie and Cersei Lannister _and_ the children Joffrey, Myrcella and Tommen Lannister. And that would be without considering the refusal of Tywin Lannister to believe such accusations and his thus inevitable ensuing conflict with the Crown. Hesitation would have been fatal... plunge the kingdom into war or murder a child? I imagine that when one is already universally reviled as a Kingsguard "Kingslayer" it's easier to disregard to hit to one's reputation one would have to take...

Cersei is straight up black tar heroin and Jaime's like a first ballot hall of fame-level junkie, he was like Robert Downey Jr level, given his general life of prestige he had to start with. actually that might be really right on now I think about it, with the redemption arc Jaime's getting to have, not unlike RDJ himself.

  • @nebulanigrimleonis3883
    @nebulanigrimleonis3883 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The Tywin chair scene. BEST SCENE EVER.
    Jamie's redemption arc started on the back of that horse for me. The first time, I thought he is not as bad as he seems, was when he admitted that he has only been with Cersei. But I really saw him, as a man that can care when he warns her about fighting back. He respects her. And when he lies about the sapphires... so sweet. I think his weakness is actually caring for the weak. But he buries it all to protect Cersei and their lies

    The closing credit song is supposed to catch you off guard, especially when his hand has just been chopped off. If you weren't expecting it (non book reader) then the song enhances your feeling of "what the f**k just happened". Seems like if you knew he was losing his hand it just seems a weird choice.

    Dany is basically Sam Hinkie. She's tanking right now, not really getting any W's yet. Not far removed from wandering the desert -- but she's picking up crazy good assets. About to take over! #TrustTheProcess !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
