Wow, didn't expect so many people to see this! Check out my "FPV Drone Kits at Every Price" video for some updated gear!

Nicely done! Agree with everything you said. I'm in so deep into this hobby and still can't fly without fear of crashing! But I'm determined to learn...brutal learning curve!
I know I'm a year late, but THANK YOU. I've been looking for a "getting started video" and haven't seen any as thorough or informative as yours. Thanks again!
You really break it down perfectly and talk in a very calm way so it's easy to listen to. For someone who just started researching about FPV drones, this video is 🔥
Thanks for your series, it's been useful for me. There are gear choices and then there is the learning how to make every thing work together. Things like first time binding and not knowing there's a bind button on the receiver, updating firmware on all of your equipment, getting your radio set up, chaning things like your stick deadband in beta flight and more, trouble shooting things like video when it disappears, and brushing off your soldering skills because there's a good chance you'll need to fix something at some point in time.
I'm flying FPV for a couple of years now and just stumbled across your channel. Even though nothing in the video was really new to me, this is some pretty good content, subbed!
I always find it comforting when I look into something and A: find someone like you, there is always a few folks out there that remember getting into something and want to help folks avoid the mistakes they made. and B: Seeing the video is a bit dated. I like the idea I missed a big push or fad, and that folks prolly have some SOPs going for all this stuff by the time I get into it. Good stuff, will be visiting the channel often as I curse my way through the journey.
I appreciate your insight on the fact that you don't have to be crazily knowledgeable about drones to learn to use them and other stuff or even feel the need to be an engineer like soldering and all that. I am going to purchase the simulator when I get paid and mess with that for a week to see how I like it. Thanks!
This video is very accurate. Coming from a cinematic pilot with DJI drones I thought this would be a breeze but it took me a long time to get the drone from the ground. I never used a sim but I hightly recommend that you do. I also think it's better to BUILD a drone because buying an RTF kit teaches you NOTHING about soldering, fixing problems, troubleshooting,.. So try to learn how to solder and get building. Besides the drone, controller,.. you will need a lot of extra materials such as shrinktubing, tape, tin, different kind of screws,.. These you will buy eventually during the whole process. For me the whole learning curve was actually pretty OK after a while and I followed these steps for myself: Learn to hover, learn to fly straight, learn to go left and right by combining yaw and roll and eventually your will have to work on your throttle control. I started out with learning Split-S and powerloops and the rest followed eventually. It's a cool hobby but you need a lot of patience because sometimes it can get really frustrated. Also: BUY A LOT OF PROPS! For me the Dalprop 5046C work well on my 4S build and for cruising I normally use HQ 5x4.3.
Hi Matt just like to say thanks to you for making these very useful tutorials for beginners. I was very unsure about what to get starting out. I never regretted any purchase that you recommended and hope to see your channel grow.
I totally agree, I remember when I started getting into the FPV world in 2014/2015 and I had a lot to learn electronics because I built my own quadcopter. but now, it is not really necessary. Currently, there are many RTF kits for beginners, so I totally agree with you sir. thank you for sharing
Great video. Just to add, people shouldn't be afraid of soldering, it's very easy and building a quad is not very difficult. In fact it's gotten so much easier each year. If you fly often and fly hard, you will break stuff. It's good to know how to rebuild your quad.
Matt, might I suggest making an updated video with all the advancements made in the past year or so? This is by far the best beginner's guide I've seen, and I keep coming back to it, but the closer I get to purchasing some of this, the more anxiety I get about the info not being super up to date. Either way, superb video!! I wouldn't ask for the update if I didn't think it was so invaluable. Please don't ever stop!!!
Yea definitely, some of this stuff is a bit out of date by now. I would recommend checking out my "FPV Drone Bundles at every Price Range" video. I would still recommend all of the stuff in that vid. I would recommend starting with a good controller. The tx16s / tango 2 / and DJI FPV v1 controller are my top choices depending on your priorities.
When I first started out, I bought the velocidrone sim then configured it to low specs and hooked up my ps4 controller. The best way I started it out since I'm a broke college student with a not-so-beefy PC for gaming. I definitely agree with the "use what you have".

Found your video late, by than I had already researched what I needed to assemble a full size fpv drone and bought all the parts separately, my computer was slow so instead of simulator I bought a iflight prebuilt 6s cinewoop and started learning to fly in it, now I bought a nazgul 5 6s, after this I am going back to the parts I bought originally and gonna assemble it. I am just glad I like FPV and didn’t give up, otherwise it would have been a waste of a 1000$
Oh boy! I don't often comment on videos but man... this was exactly what I needed! Props for the amazing video! You've just earned yourself a new sub 😁

This deserves way more views! Great content and editing Matt, thanks for making such a comprehensive video about getting into the hobby. Wish I'd have found this months ago.
This is about as solid a beginner FPV tutorial as you could hope for. Super thorough. Just wish I'd watched it before I threw $200+ at a Neo 2. (But maybe I'll love it. We'll see.) Thanks for the great walk-through.
Very informative for a beginner. Just ordered the transmeitter as after a few weeks on the Sim I kinda know I want to get into it. Gonna use the transmitter for a week or so before delving further.
Great and detailed video, without going to much in the unnecessary stuff, exactly what I was looking for... I subscribed, thank you for the great work!
Ive been doing FPV for years now. Its nice to see newbies coming in and I like the quality at which you are presenting your content. I fall under the category of people that will tell people unless you learn how to rip your drone apart and put it back together, youre not going to have a good time in this hobby. So I will have to respectfully disagree with you on that. In my experience the amount of parts that break and require you to replace them via soldering will start to get intense as you go for heavier quads that haul bigger cameras. But I can see that you are relatively new to this. Time will teach you all those. Keep at it. I like the direction you are taking!
Fantastic intro! As a seasoned FPV pilot, I Was looking for a single good link to explain the process to newbies. Yours hit the mark perfectly. Would love to see an updated version with the latest gear and options… but I KNOW how much work this is.
Thanks for the video, I'm only a teenager but want to be an aerial filmographer so I'm trying to learn fpv and cinematic drones like dji's so that I can be better at my future job.
I took the whole lockdown period to start. I know i can take some stress, so here's what i did for my first drone: X8 octacopter- redundancy. I took two carbon fibre 250 frames and combined them(just the arms part) to make a X8 frame. F3 deluxe- ms5611 barometer and gps for position hold Runcam v3 cam I just bought 15 lg hg2 lithium cells , made a 3S 5p pack myself.(i made a capacitive spot welder to sport weld batteries.) I bought fysky i6 transmitter modded it to 10 channel. Ia6b receiver modded for 10 channel and again a small mod to transmit the whole 3S voltage back to. There were a few things more. All in all, i modded the fuck out shit to make a drone with redundancy and a flight time upwards of 35 minutes. I lost sanity a fee times but now i can say i have a very nice endurance drone under 400 USD.
Great video man! One tip I have is to not be overconfident after "figuring out the sim". Just because you can rip in the sim doesn't mean it directly translates to real life.
@@MattPochwat Hello again! I am from the Argentine Patagonia, I wanted to ask you the following. I'm about to start this hobby and I would like to start with digital goggles, since I think it's the technology to be used, am I right? Is DJI Goggles the only one available right now? I would like to buy everything now, mini drone whit digital view, free style drone, and cinematic too, and its spare parts. because it takes 1 month to arrive from the USA to my city. Ill follow your advice, first slot time whit simulator, alot time whit the mini drone, etc. What do you recommend me? To buy? Thank you very much and many successes with your TH-cam channel. I think it will be one of the best.
@@federicomagri8022 Hey, so keep in mind, I'm not an expert. I focus on the basics because that's what I know best at the moment. There may be other digital goggles available but the dji set is the only one worth getting at the moment. You will also not be able to use the dji goggles with a micro drone like the tinyhawk. From my understanding the dji system requires you to use their camera and module which you have to wire into the drone you are using. They are simply too big and heavy for the micros. I would also recommend that you start with one drone if possible. Maybe two of the same drone so that you can swap parts when you crash. I also live in South Korea and it takes a long time for parts to come in. That wait time is going to be unavoidable. Make sure you know exactly what drone frames and components are compatable with the fpv system and that you are comfortable installing it yourself before you buy
Also, Joshua Bardwell is probably the best resource for getting help with your drone builds. I would highly suggest downloading the discord app and joining his community. There are many people there that will be able to answer your questions. Many pilots with much more experience than me
Wow!! Thanks you! That was the best video on youtube I found about fpv. Congrats for the quality content! You deserve thousands of subscribers. Success! The best for you from Brazil :D
Just do it, pick something and build it. Doesn't have to be the most top of the line. My most favorite quad I fly is my little 3.5 in 2-3s. Built it for like 50 - 60 bucks. If you build it yourself it gives you more of a reason to say to learn to fly because you know what it took to create it.
I totally agree. I mentioned in one of the comment that if I was buying a transmitter now the jumper is what I would get for sure. It is a bit more expensive though!
Hi! Great video! First video I've ever watched from you, and I will be checking out more. One fact I would like to correct, as of august 2022, the Taranis Q X7 radio comes with a short USB-A to Mini-USB cable. The radio lets you charge the battery with the battery connected. I use a longer USB-A to Mini-USB that I've had for a standing microphone at my desktop setup to charge and connect my radio to my PC. So there's actually no need to buy a charger for the Taranis Q X7 in the beginning, before you buy a drone and several other batteries as you recommend. I am currently at the first stage, by playing Liftoff and researching which drone to go for my first. I opted in to buy the radio controller because I wanted a more realistic approach to my testing phase.
Haha been there done that and love the hobby, I love the thinking, building programming soldering, and all the stuff we must learn, takes a long time before you get bored,,,,, and to save up the money.
Thank you so much! You are a great teacher and stay so calm and easy to understand. I got into FPV but as you mentioned, found out it’s a bit more complex than I imagined. You’ve given me the encouragement I needed and am looking forward to watching more. Again, thank you, you have made a difference.
Very nice Matt. *** Update *** the defacto radio these days is the Radiomaster TX16S...which for a few more bucks you get alot more radio...multi-port opens up so many options.
i honestly think wanting to do real fpv without being ready to learn (or at least to handle) some basic electronics is like wanting to hack without being willy to code. anyway, each their own, nice video!
You really need to know the most basic stuff like what positive and negative mean and how to read a diagram, designing boards and replacing components is a totally different thing but knowing the basics required to build a drone yourself (premade parts that work together) is really required. There is no point buying a bind and fly drone and then not knowing how to replace and esc or motor or even damaged wire, you need to know at least some basics unless you want to buy a new drone everytime it breaks.
Thanks Matt for this video. I am a beginner and I learned really something big to what I wanted to do. I know there are technical things that I have to know and this is the reason why I bumped on this video. And somehow you made me see other things that I have to know. Great job on this video.
Thanks for this! I'm planning on getting my first drone this year to use with my gopro. I didn't know that simulators were a thing and that'll be super useful to practice on before I commit.
Superb guide. I've seen loads of videos talking about needing to drop £1000 to get started and the price put me off trying FPV. I only gave it a go when I came across the Eachine Novice 2 bundle that's a relatively cheap intro. Wish I'd seen this sooner.

All in all, i modded the fuck out shit to make a drone with redundancy and a flight time upwards of 35 minutes. I lost sanity a fee times but now i can say i have a very nice endurance drone under 400 USD.
You should make a how too sound like an amazing setup
Dear god make videos!
Great video man! One tip I have is to not be overconfident after "figuring out the sim". Just because you can rip in the sim doesn't mean it directly translates to real life.
The best video for beginners. There are many videos. But this its diferent. Very clear, very easy to understand!! Congrats!! And thx!!
Thank you! I'll keep filming more soon
Many pilots with much more experience than me
@@MattPochwat thank you again for your time and your help! Keep doing the videos, you will be one of the best in this field!
Thx!!
Wow!! Thanks you! That was the best video on youtube I found about fpv. Congrats for the quality content! You deserve thousands of subscribers. Success! The best for you from Brazil :D
This is so kind. Thanks
I just wanted to skim it, but ended up watching it all. Good helpful vid, good work! thumbs up!
Great job, being a beginner the information really helps. Thanks
Really great vid for those seriously considering FPV. Well done and thank you.
Such an awesome video dude. I’ve always been nervous with the thought of building from scratch and this has definitely helped!
I'd suggest the Jumper t16 over frsky... esp if you plane to go serious and get TBS Crossfire... frsky is a closed system.
I totally agree. I mentioned in one of the comment that if I was buying a transmitter now the jumper is what I would get for sure. It is a bit more expensive though!
Brilliant guide had no idea this was a thing but definitely going to find out if my laptop will run one of those sims
Yea... it could definitely be an endless pit for your money and time if you allow it to be
Thank you so much! I fly for 1 year fpv and thies video saved my life. Now i am fly every week. I have also a video on my chanel.; )
im tryna step in to the game... this one has the best info so far...
Thank you so much! You are a great teacher and stay so calm and easy to understand. I got into FPV but as you mentioned, found out it’s a bit more complex than I imagined. You’ve given me the encouragement I needed and am looking forward to watching more. Again, thank you, you have made a difference.
Thank you for creating videos that are enjoyable to watch, are full of phenomenal information and get to the point! Really appreciate it man!
This is a really good guide. Made a purchasing decision based on this. Thumbs up - subscribed.
What a great video. Gives info if good places to start. Production of video was great too.
Amazing video brother! Super helpful, well explained and great info!! It really did make a difference instantly in my knowledge of drones.
Very nice Matt. *** Update *** the defacto radio these days is the Radiomaster TX16S...which for a few more bucks you get alot more radio...multi-port opens up so many options.
the real content for beginner
I’m only a minute in and I already love you and I see great things to come with your TH-cam channel amazing edits and the youtubers got me
Haha thanks man
Just binged on your vids man. Didn’t even know I wanted to fly fpv drones.
Lol I can teach you this summer :)
BRO WE HAVE ALMOST THE SAME EQUIPMENT. I got the Nazgul 5, the EV800D, the QX7s, and emax tinyhawk freestyle. Honestly everything you said is true. GG
He looks like he is going to burst out laughing at any moment during the whole video.
hahaha i thought i was the only one who notice pahahaahahha
I kinda smiled back at him :D
i honestly think wanting to do real fpv without being ready to learn (or at least to handle) some basic electronics is like wanting to hack without being willy to code.
anyway, each their own, nice video!
@@conorstewart2214 couldnt say it any better!
Thanks Matt for this video. I am a beginner and I learned really something big to what I wanted to do. I know there are technical things that I have to know and this is the reason why I bumped on this video. And somehow you made me see other things that I have to know. Great job on this video.
you killed this explaining things to a noob good job brooo!
thanks for the tip's of baterries and charchers!
Thanks for this! I'm planning on getting my first drone this year to use with my gopro. I didn't know that simulators were a thing and that'll be super useful to practice on before I commit.
I want to get into this hobby because I love soldering.
You get in to my head, i think we start mostly same step, same quad, same goggles, same laptop to haaa
Nice to meet u
Nice to meet you too 🤘
Superb guide. I've seen loads of videos talking about needing to drop £1000 to get started and the price put me off trying FPV. I only gave it a go when I came across the Eachine Novice 2 bundle that's a relatively cheap intro. Wish I'd seen this sooner.
Really really great work. This is the video everyone is looking for. Well done!
MJX B6 Bugs 6 brushless with led lights is a really good beginners racing drone, only thing is you have to put a camera on it, comes without a camera, it's really easy to put one on it though!
