This to me is kind of the same as when "slugging" became a trend: promoted on TikTok as something new when really it's something people have been doing for years without the trendy label. Maybe not specifically like this trend, but rotating between retinoids and exfoliants throughout the week with a day or two of "recovery" sprinkled in was already a normal approach to a routine before it was given the name.

Exactly! This is something most of us already do but these influencers give it an unnecessary name to sound like they started it.

I passionately dislike that name slugging. Lol There is nothing new under the sun but don’t tell these kids that. These Influencers are being influenced by companies enticing them with making deals 😈with them.

i started skin cycling before it had a name. i was overloaded with skincare, and learned what i could and couldn’t use together, so i adjust my skincare to what i feel my skin needs/can tolerate well. i use differin, but it causes a lot of dryness for me (even on my neck, where i never apply it!), so i use other things on other nights. of course they are marketing a name now lol.

Yes me too! I was so confused by the new trend because i was thinking.. its this how most routines are anyways? I guess there are some people who use irritating products everyday without stopping.. maybe they believe the irritation means the product is working so they dont want to take a break

I did the same thing when I started adapalene. I’ve gotten very used to adapalene and have found moisturizing products that work for me so now I use adapalene 6 nights a weeks and then I exfoliate on the one night that I don’t

Yes, me too! Now, when I’m dealing with a nasty hyperpigmentation on my upper lip after laser hair removal, it makes even more sense. I do use a hydroquinone serum topically, but I try not to mix it with Tretinoin, just not to overwhelm my skin.

This was such a great perspective on skin cycling. I saw Whitney Bowe's videos and started skin cycling, but realized I was getting better results using my tretinoin every other day instead of every third or fourth day. This confirms that I should go with my gut and with my own personal results. Thank you!

Just pay attention and listen to your skin. Tretinoin daily is good for me, sometimes my skin gives me signs, so I stop and go with more gentle actives along with soothing ingredients.

My weekly night routine for 2 years now:
    Mon/Tue - Tretinoin
    Wed - BHA/PHA exfoliant
    Thu/Fri -Tretinoin
    Sat - BHA/PHA exfoliant
    Sun - Rest (moisturizer only)
I’m super oily and acne prone so chemical exfoliation helps unclog my pores.

Learning your skin & symptoms of irritation is so important. Then it is easy to give your skin what it needs. I adjust my routine based on how my skin feels. I will skip a night of tretinoin if my skin feels too dry or irritated. Use 2-4 layers of toner, based on dehydration. Sometimes I will do a whole routine of calming and repair, especially if I have been outside in the Maine winter weather. Many blessings💖💖💖

IMO Skin cycling is good but it’s not for everyone. I find it works well on my sensitive combination skin because it can’t tolerate harsh actives everyday. Plus I have no wrinkles or acne so my retinol working gently over the long term is ideal for me. In short, skin cycling works best for sensitive and/or combo skin that isn’t in need of immediate intervention and just needs to stay balanced.

Very good advice, I also think the Age of individuals is also important. I'm 77 with a lot of
sun damaged skin, but sensitive skin. So I'm using a little retinol everynight, but I leave out areas
where sensitivity appears. As you say, everyone is different & you have to be careful.

I knew you’ve have really interesting thoughts about this! Great video. I wonder if you might consider an updated video on caring for skin wounds? On Sunday I fell and badly skinned both palms and one knee, and I’ve been covering them with large non-stick pads and CeraVe Healing Ointment even before I saw your video from 5yrs ago. That video is so great; I laughed so much. I’m sure the advise is the same, but maybe you’d consider an updated video that also touches on larger abrasions and the full healing period. For instance, I wonder if at some point I could transition to those second skin pads for burns? Also what about letting skin around the wound breathe? Necessary? My wounds are fairly large - about 2in squared - but I’m mid-30s with no health issues so I think I can heal them without a doctor it’s long as I can keep them from getting infected.

I do this skin cycling for 20 years now… But in a different way: 1 night retinoids,2 night calming, moisturising, nourishing ,3 night exfoliants , 4 night calming, moisturising, nourishing… and so on. Remember that most actives literally destroy your skin barrier ( biom, hydrolpidic barrier) -that’s just is. If you using actives carrying for your biom, moisture, lipids in your skin is a must…

This is what I do naturally. It just makes sense. You can't use all the products everyday such as an AHA peel. I just started the chemical exfoliation and it has made a huge difference in clarity and brightness in a short time. I'm just starting a retinoid. Taking the slow approach hasn't caused me any irritation on my combo skin. I cycle more like this video recommends. I did start a chemical glycolic and AHA peel along with 2x/wk drugstore retinol, which has been working great for me. My skin isn't super sensitive though. I have fine lines and sebaceous hyperplasia. I can't afford to see a professional, so it's trial and error and this channel has helped alot.

When it comes to TikTok and skincare…..I personally feel like it’s only good for discovering new products or hyping up products that are already on the market, but not as highly talked about. When it comes to trying new techniques to apply skincare….some of the techniques that I’ve seen on TikTok have honestly just been so useless, dumb, and a bit risky to the skin and a lot of the TikTok creators that I’ve seen come up with these trends….end up with messed up skin, or they know that some of these skincare trends aren’t that good but purposely do it for views, and then trick other people into trying out those trends.

Thank you again for so much useful information. My skin breakes out the next day after using Caudalie peeling mask (glycolic acid) and it never accured to me that maybe I don't even have to use it at all. I use retinal and a mosturizer every night so my skin is pretty smooth as it is. As a woman in mid40s I was sure that an exfoliant is a must have for an "anti-aging" skin care rutine. I live in NE and I back off my retinol starting now until March because my skin gets dry. But I’ve been using it for years and it seems I still get the benefits. And I use heavier moisturizers too. I guess that’s skin cycling! The internet is ridic sometimes!

I have tried skin cycling and it did not work for me. I tried to use my differin less, and I noticed that my face was peeling badly. Once I went back to using it nightly, my skin went back to normal.

I have been using tretinoin for 3 and a half years , I use it every night and the only thing I switch up is my morning routine . Some days I’ll use a barrier cream , others I’ll use alpha Arbutin. Tretinoin works the best for me when used nightly .

I've been doing "skin cycling" before it was called "skin cycling". I call it "giving my skin a rest" and it works for me. Sometimes I'll even go a whole week with no actives. My skin loves it.

Dr. Bowe does advise stepping up the retinoids as you can tolerate it and tailoring the cycle to your own skin. It is just a basis.

I'm truly lucky that my skin isn't sensitive. The only thing my face really hasn't tolerated is adapalene (yes I introduced it properly, but I purged and got myself a nice new batch of scars). I use a very mild retinoid now and I can use it every single day with no issues, even right after an AHA cleanser. I also use 1% SA every day, mixed with L-ascorbic acid. I even use 10% niacinamide in oily zones during the summer. Zero irritation.

I started skin cycling after coming across Whitney’s video and it destroyed my skin. It was the worst my skin ever looked because I was purging and repurging. I t created hyperpigmentation that I’m still trying to fade.

    You look so beautiful ✨️
For Skin Cycling there are weeks I focus more on hydrating than exfoliating and use chemical exfoliants when I feel my skin needs it. My skin gets irritated easily so I have to be careful.

Good Morning Andrea 🧡I think the biggest issue is that to many people are using to many actives before their skin is ready for them. They think if they start a Tretinoin for example thinking it will be a miracle and they over do it. I think you stick to a regimen and you skip the actives in the beginning. I have always taught my clients this and it works every time. Stop the foundation and concealer, be consistent with excellent skin care, use zinc oxide sunscreen and wear a wide brimmed hat. 🙌🏻🍑🧡Lisa

yeah! I've just recently started tretinoin and my routine is
      Morning: moisturiser then sunscreen
      Night:Cleanse, moisturise, Tretinoin, moisturise
I use it twice a week still getting irritation:((

Happy Tuesday Dr Dray and everyone . Thanks for this I don't do TIK TOK but I do actually do this . I am 59 with sensitive oily acne prone skin . I actually use the Peach lily good acid toner a few mornings a week and use adapalene a few nights a week but don't like to do them the same days . Have a great day love to mom and Tybee xoxoxoxo

I have newer and older acne scars, milia, and acne prone skin and for years I've tried everything you can think of and skin cycling has helped me tremendously. I do an exfoliation night, 2 retinol nights, and 2 recovery nights. Day time: I'm using an antibacterial soap to cleanse, toning, applying niacinamide, vitamin C, and SPF. Nighttime I'm cleansing, toning, exfoliation cream/tretinoin/or moisturizer depending on what night it is. I notice when it's my recovery nights my scarring looks so much better the next day. I apply cerave healing treatment on top of my moisturizer. Now I'm just at a bump in the road because my texture is not getting better. (Black heads, milia)

I think product's toleration are correlated with the hormonal cycle. Tretinoin, for me, irritates my skin during ovulation stage.

  • @1015SaturdayNight

  • @silvipaskov9147
    @silvipaskov9147 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I've done that for the last 3 years without knowing about a trend. It works perfectly well for me and because of my disposal to acne, I cycle retinol, salysilic acid and my ceramides(hydration). I always advice my friends to do the same as it works. Besides that vit. C works up to 48 hours inside the skin, so it can be cycled with niacinamide and/or vit. D on serum

I do a version of skin cycling. My skin can’t handle using any product two days in a row. I have to alternate even moisturizers to keep my skin from reacting. Actives like Vitamin C and A preparations cycle even farther apart because my skin is so sensitive. And I’ve been doing this for decades.

  • @marylawman8603
    @marylawman8603 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Not on Tik Tok so I had never heard of this. Interesting concept and it actually makes sense. Especially if you have sensitive skin. Appreciate you sharing your thoughts on this trend. Thanks, Dr Dray! Thanks to you, I've been doing this whenever incorporating a new product into my sensitive skin care routine. Happy Tuesday! Hope you have a beautiful evening. 💜
