😂😂 “can you imagine if someone from the clean beauty movement came across 2-hydroxymethyldimethylsulfoxonium chloride? They’d be quakin’ in their boots…but hand them a sponge…?” 👏👏🙌🙌😂😂
As a Korean I get annoyed when people come up with this most random questionable skicare hacks and label it as kbeauty. Yes I've seen the skincare trend that was trending a decade ago trending again (or allegedly by the content creator) but I've never seen aaaanything like this before and this don't sound like k beauty because it's all about non invasive lol
Well it’s about gentle skincare vs the American harsh skincare. South Korea is the plastic surgery capital of the world so to say non-invasive is stretch.
Right about the same reason why gloves are used when applying a chemical peel. It's to protect the esthetician's hands (can you imagine if no gloves were worn each time a peel service was performed on another client? RIP poor skin and super gross) and to keep things sanitized and clean for the client. If you're performing any type of service in which an acid/mechanical exfoliation is used, the skin is essentially going to be newly exfoliated and "fresh/fragile". The last thing you want to get on that fresh and fragile skin is bacteria.....that's why gloves are used. Could you imagine going to a spa, asking for a peel and then having the esthetician perform it without gloves? Yikes!
Happy Tuesday Dr. Dray! You saved my skin, thank you! I would appreciate it if you can talk about different laser procedures, like for acne scars and also hair and scalp issues too! Happy Valentine🎉
Funny to watch this exactly 1 year after it was posted, just coincidentally because I was curious about the VT Reedle Shot everyone is talking about lately! Based on what was laid out in this video, it doesn't sound like Dr Dray's opinion on spicules will have shifted since then. Although I did hear that VT released some testing and safety data alongside the product, so I wonder if any reassurances are to be found there.
Well here's another trend I haven't heard of. But I don't watch Tik Tok and it doesn't appear that I'm missing anything. Imagine getting this in your eye! 😲 No thanks. I'll stick to my Albolene and Cerave foaming cleanser. Enjoyed hearing about this. Thanks, as always Dr Dray. Happy Tuesday!! I hope you have a lovely evening. ❤
Dr. Dray, Avene has a new product. It's called RetrinaAL Ceramic Lipid-Replenishing Balm with bakuchiol, niaciamides, and ceramides. Would you be able to look at it? Thank you!
These emergent methods that are straight to market scream “new idea to get your money!” Instead of “highly effective treatment.” Same reason they come up with new potato chip flavors- “spend money! Food is entertaining and new!”
Thank you Dr.Dray! I don’t watch TikTok so thanks for keeping me in the loop. I couldn’t make it yesterday at noon so watched later. I loved your Costco video, you are hilarious and I learned so much! Thank you 💙💙💙Happy Valentine’s Day ❤️
Same…I do not use any social media platform. TH-camrs like Dr. Dray reacting to and refuting the trends on those platforms is how I know what happening and makes me happy about my decision to stay away from them. 😂
Spicule therapy has been around for quite a while. I’ve had 11 treatments of the Storyderm Princess Peel, performed by a license esthetician. Each treatment is done 6-8 weeks apart. I have ice pick acne scars and it has softened their appearance, but has not gotten rid of them completely. I don’t find the spicules painful at all. To me, it feels like when your arm goes to sleep and it tingles when it “wakes up.” The most important thing is that you cannot be allergic to shellfish in order to have this done. You have to stop use of all active ingredients (vitamin C, retinoids, acids, etc.) 7 days prior to treatment and 7 days after. After treatment, you cannot get the treatment area wet, hot, sweaty or exposed to steam for 24 hours. Otherwise you’ll disrupt the spicules. So, basically no shower, intense activity or direct exposure to sun for 24 hours. Overall, I enjoyed the results and would definitely do it again. The Princess Peel is the mid-tier Storyderm treatment. The highest level is called Time Machine. It can only be done in the winter months, but I haven’t made the leap to that level yet. Having said all of that, this is NOT a procedure that should be done by someone who is uneducated and inexperienced in spicule therapy. Each treatment takes approximately 2 hours to perform because it’s not just a matter of putting spicules on your face and rubbing them in. There’s pre and post care that needs to be done. It’s unfortunate that there are people on TikTok trending spicule therapy, but not telling the whole story of how it needs to be done, how often, and the pre/post care. There’s a reason that it’s meant for license professionals to perform.
Sponge spicules have been around a very, very long time. They were first used in Europe to treat acne, but have been perfected in various skincare treatments in Korea and other Asian countries. Technically, not an exfoliant (but they do speed up cell turnover), they are designed to infuse the skin with products. Spicules are infused with various products from peptides, Exosomes, GrowthFactors and many other ingredients designed to address certain skin conditions. First and foremost, it is a treatment that should be administered by a professional i.e. trained Esthetician or other skincare professionals.
Interestingly enough I had this done last month at a spa that’s distributing this new spicules treatment (or biomicroneedling, as they like to call it) to estheticians. For anyone wondering how it feels, I can compare the feeling with fiberglass. The process was very short, soon after I was left with reddish skin, the next day I still could feel the spicules and a little itchiness while I touched my skin. The third day through fourth day I was peeling. Fifth day I had baby soft skin, I saw some improvement in fine lines, overall glow, not much else. I should mention I have resilient skin, I’m 25 and have no major skin concerns. So… this is still very new but wanted to share.
Uhm... no. Just hearing about this technique makes my sensitive skin itch. Hard pass! Thanks as always for the intel, Dr. Dray. And Happy Valentine's Day!!!
I’m so glad you chose this topic, I was curious about this trend but couldn’t find much on it. I didn’t like how the user said that she could still feel the needles in her face the day after. Thank you for your vid is so informational.
Are there any resources discussing the sustainability impacts of this type of sponge harvesting for cosmetic treatments? I'm not a marine biologist by any means and i don't know anything frankly about ocean sponges, but with how much degradation to ocean ecosystems there is globally I get nervous any time something related to harvesting ocean wildlife for cosmetics comes up. The science you discussed in here is interesting for sure with respect to utility in skin treatments, but i would hope that some part of this research is taking into consideration preservation of the ecosystems they're sourcing these sponges from
Could you update us on this topic as VT reedle shot seems to be really popular rn? At first I got excited about it but now I have a lot of questions about this product.
Literally saw a Tiktok of someone who accidentally scratched her hand on some coral/sponge. Her hand was as you described, blisters, pus and inflammation 😶
I'm just thinking about people at home using this over skin with active breakouts 😬 plus if I were to do any sort of microneedling not only would I want it to be done by a health professional, but personally I like the idea of having the needles come right back _out_ of my skin
Andrea, u r too bloody funny. U kill me. I'm laughing so hard about the long word comment. About clean beauty, and spicule up. Ur great. I needed that.
Biologique Recherche actually has a had a toner/serum type called MC110 for years and the primary ingredient is sponge extract which acts on a microscopic level like microneedling and basically initiates minute a very low level type of inflammation which stimulates the production of collagen and elastin. P50V also has this ingredient. It's actually quite ingenious since it also oxygenates the skin and stimulates microcirculation.
perhaps they’re pushed upwards by the layers of skin from the stratum basale towards the epidermis desquamates over and sloughs off with the dead cells ?
Goodness me, these TikTok trends are getting ridiculous. I hope these Tiktokers would research and think twice first before posting something 🤦🏻♀️ thanks for shedding light Dr. Dray. Hoping you get more subscribers ❤ happy hearts’ day! ❤❤❤

OK so my question is, what happens to the spicules - do they get shed in the skin shedding process? Or are these things staying in the skin? This would make a big difference surely.
Peach & Lily has a brand- eco your skin- product - Meso Ampoule & that has Spicules in it. The customer reviews there are positive. I hope my reply Isn’t deleted this time.
She uses tretinoin so I doubt there would be use of her personally reviewing it. Plus you really can't tell from the ingredients if it's stable and penetrates the skin properly.
Me looking at the spicules: YEAH NO....I don't want that in my eyes. Only if it's in a very precise medium, maybe like a sticker, similar to microdarts. But we shouldn't be over harvesting sponges and corals. They are already having a hard enough time. I can imagine police munitions adding spicules to pepper gel now for crowd/riot control. Just to make the pain harder to wash off. 😫 I think the should do safety testing on corneas of the eye.
If you have to put on gloves 🧤 for your face 👀 obviously it's something that's gonna be harsh for the skin 😂 so hell no I'm good with my gentle fash wash

Happy valentine's day Dr.Dray. Also, I have sth to ask. Recently, some of my friends (near 30) started using NMN supplement in 18000mg (daily or weekly? How do you think about NMN? Thank you in advance
Ok I have never been on TikTok and don’t plan to start so I have a question? When Dr. Dray said, “…and egg to put in your vagina.” What the heck was she talking about?! I’ve got a teenage granddaughter and her mother is clueless so somebody’s gotta know what kinda crap is out there!
@@db-gb5xi Just looked that up and I gotta wonder if GP purposely defrauded the public or if she really believed that stuff. How could she possibly think that it would be ‘advanced enlightenment’ and not ‘medieval superstitious nonsense’. I’m just glad she had to pay 145,000 dollars! I know she won’t miss the money but I hope it snapped her out of it!
I haven't seen it on TikTok but I have sen some foundation compacts with Spicules in stores in Japan and Japanese TH-camrs using them. Apparently Korea also has foundation compacts with spicules. I haven't looked into it super deeply- but there are some Japanese dermatologists that say that it might be okay to use and then some other that say that it's unsafe. So it's really interesting to watch, but Dr. Dray what do you think about having Spicules in make up to deliver better penetration of the "beauty ingredients" in the foundation? Thanks so much for the interesting video :)
Omg.🙄 what a terrible idea to have spicules in makeup. Some people use foundation on their eyelid skin, and under eye. Not to mention that compacts and the sponge applicator harbor bacteria. The skin doesn't know the difference of what's going into the gaps made by the spicules😨!! And you can't even guarantee you get them out every time you cleanse???🤨😒 HARD PASS!!
I'm not sure I understand. If spicules are comprised of silica and calcium, how can distilled water dissolve them? I believe silica, calcium and other minerals also comprise stalactites and stalagmites in caverns within the Earth's crust, but natural water deposits more minerals - so I don't see how distilled, presumably mineral-free water could dissolve those mineral formations. Sounds like spicule use for skin treatment is a bunch of hoo-ha. Thanks for your always complete explanations - maybe too complex for me. I'll stay with processes and products I can halfway understand.
So interesting...thank you for today's "derm class" Dr. Dray. You are the best teacher.. Truly! 💚 And I definitely will not be putting an egg in my vagina anytime soon 😅

"As the dead cells fall off, spicules naturally drain out of the skin within 24 hours." - From TIAM (Korean brand) website.

Actually I finished watching your video now I'm scared to buy those compacts lol
That would be so terrible to have spicules in foundation because the makeup would go really deep into your skin
Any updates about it? Just bought it and now im concerned
