- The tour of Idaho is a dirt bike event that consists of an unsupported, unassisted, 13 day, 2300 mile ride from Idaho's southern border with Utah to the northern border with Canada. Day three was 86 miles and took 21.0 hours to complete.
I started in Challis and ended in Salmon.

Awesome second attempt and kudos to you Brian for sticking with it! My first attempt was in 2021 and resulted in hitting a deer on Day 2 between Pocatello and Arco on a fast transfer road section. Straight to the hospital in Pocatello with a shattered right elbow, dislocated clavicle, a fractured rib and my right shoulder blade completely split in two top to bottom. I wanted to keep riding but wasted no time in planning a second attempt. Completed the TOI with a great group of friends in August 2023 with no more deer encounters! The Tour of Idaho is truly epic! I want to ride it again!
Very interesting story. Glad you are now healed and riding again. That would make a cool YT video, even if it is you just telling the story.
Wow....just wow. I have lived in Idaho my entire 70 years and 4 days ago, when I clicked on your very first 2022 video, was the first time I heard of this event. In those past 4 days I have watched each of your series with anticipation and wonderment at the amazing scenery and the rough riding conditions. What amazing memories you captured that will be with you forever. I found at the end of the day 7 video, I felt emotional at the towel throw...Respect, and well done Sir....well done.

You've done an amazing job with these videos the last few years. I just finished all 7 days and was sad to see the tube failure. I was honestly surprised you ran tubes when you. changed it on day two or three. bib seems the safest bet for this trip.
Such an amazing achievement in spite of not being able to complete your journey. I have huge respect for your efforts. I'm 68 years old and have been riding offroad for 57 of those. The fact that you only started riding bikes 5 years ago makes your adventure even more impressive. I mean, off-the-chart impressive. You mentioned in the first video 2023 was the last year for the tour. That is disappointing. The world needs these types of challenges to keep older guys like me inspired and give younger guys goals. Thank you for documenting this with a truly inspirational flare.

I just watched your 2022 and 2023 TOI vlogs over the last four or five days. What an incredible journey! Outstanding job in the challenges and on the vlog. It was like binge watching a great TV mini-series.

Thank you Mike ! I really appreciate the comments. You were extremely inspirational in motivating me to take on this adventure, and I am certain I am not the only one. These videos are an attempt to follow in your footsteps in sharing the true experience, and hopefully inspiring others to get out and experience similar challenges for themselves.

Incredible adventure! I loved watching it. I have ridden some of the easier sections of the TOI, and they are much more difficult than they appear on video. I have no desire to ride the more technical sections, especially with such exposure. You did an amazing job! Thanks for sharing.

I was so bummed watching your PLB that day, I know that feeling all to well when it sinks in that the tour is over. It's a shame that you can't get another shot at a finisher number but the memories and stories that you do have will stick with you for the rest of your life!
Great job on this series! Having recently visited Idaho and ridden singletrack at 51 years old, I have a great deal of respect for you! We rode 30 to 70 miles per day and were completely beat by the end. I can't imagine a 200-mile day. Few people will ever comprehend what you tried to accomplish, but for those that do, we understand the difficulty. Looking forward to your next adventure!

Enjoyed the series man. 25 years ago, a buddy of mine from Fairfield Idaho told me he could ride out of his backyard north to Canada on dirt. Being from Upstate SC I didn't really believe him. This summer, a buddy and myself headed out there with our bikes. We spent 7 days in the Sawtooths camping just one mile northwest of Smokey Bar store with my buddy. On day 7 we turned north and rode part of the tour and some of our own to Wallace. We had camping gear so we had to dodge the super rough stuff. I used Jeffs videos to pick out the less treacherous stuff. It's a trip I'll never forget, and we'll be heading back. If you ever get back out there, camp or stay at the Smokey bar store. Take little water gultch to bear creek and Ross fork lakes. Of all the places we visited in Idaho, bear creek area was my favorite. We saw Ross fork basin in the distance and its breathtaking. Sorry about the mechanical man. I get it. Watching Jeff, Mike Knight and those boys from Texas, I literally jumped and screamed at the TV when they finished. I have to admit, riding for 35 years, I haven't found a way to get over the hill exposure. Your 5 years have served you well, no way I could do it man. Thanks for putting this together.

Thank you. Yeah it sucks. But live for another adventure. I need to do one. I was going to put a clip on all my gear in day 7, but I just needed to wrap it up. You are not the first to ask, so I need to do a separate video on the gear.
The Tour of Idaho solo is easily analogous to climbing Everest solo. The ability and intellect required to stop the ride or the climb can save your live and allow future adventures in those domains. Adventures at this level are seldom successful given the numerous opportunities for failure because of weather, rider error, or machine failure. Thanks for sharing your amazing adventure, and especially for being intelligent enough to survive it. Great video editing and photographic skills also!

@@briangoss you mentioned only 5 years of riding dirt bikes? Incredible skills in so short of time! I began riding motorcycles at 15 when it was possible in the late 1960's to rent Yamaha 80 trail bikes at a local gas station! Now at 73 I ride a 2017 KTM 1090R on fast pavement and easy off-road rides, and a 2023 KTM 350 EXC-F for difficult and technical rides close to my home in remote Colorado. Addictive is a great term to describe our love of off-road adventures! Looking forward to your next video! I gave up on GoPro cameras recently after so many issues, which model did you use in the 2023 TOI videos? Your videos using them had great color, contrast, and focus!

Awesome story heartbreaking you had a mechanical. I realize had your spare tube not been damaged you would have made it however If you could foresee this would you believe a tubliss system or a mouse would have better choice? Another suggestion for your future expeditions carry 8-10 extra heavy duty zip ties you can tie these around the tire and wheel holding the tire firmly to the wheel. Great adventure you took us on thanks.
Tubliss and Mouse have both failed in the past on the TOI. UHD tubes are the best option but certainly not fail proof.
Brian, I am sooooo impressed. I can't believe that you made it as far as you did with your tire. that is scary for sure. I carry a PLB when I go riding on either my TW200 or my Polaris 570 Trail. I am fortunate that I am never more than 5 miles in a straight line from a good road. (with people) I mostly ride on quad trails. I had no idea that there were so many single tracks in Idaho. I live in Pocatello, so I have ridden my quad a lot on quad trails. I am getting better on single tracks , but I am no where near as good of a bike rider as I was in 1995. I actually quit dirt bikes for over 20 years. I have lost my confidence on dirt bikes, and it is ever so slowly coming back. Heavy on the SLOWLY! I realize that I just need to speed up on my TW. I go so slow that I wobble all over. Last year I forced myself to go a bit faster, and it helped a lot.
There is absolutely no way that I could ride those challenging single tracks for 3 hours, let alone 15 hours. It is so sad that you could not finish. I think that you should have finished anyway, wether it counted in the record books or not. You gave it your all, there is nothing more that you could have done. Tapping out in your instance is not a disgrace. Not at all.
The fact that you have only been riding for 5 years is unbelievable. I started riding dirt bikes in 1966. My first bike was a Honda Dream 250. And, yes, I took it out on the dirt a lot.
I would be so scared that my bike would go off the trail, and I would never be able to get it back on the trail by myself. In Washington, I did go off a trail one time with my XT500, and I just went to the bottom, and figured out a way to get it back up to the trail. I do not think that that way of thinking would work where you were at.

Good luck to your future endeavors your voice sounds like the Mandalorian from Disney so I’ll call you the Mandalorian trail rider thanks again I’m 66 and just bought my first two bikes this year went for the road and went for the dirt, you’re inspiring.

Probably not, maybe someday finish the remainder of the route. But there is a lot too see and little time. Time to move on.

Amazing adventure!! Thanks for sharing. But my god, why not run a nitromousse?! They’ll last a full 1000+ mile race if you install and lube them correctly in the first place.
Very common question and one that has had a lot of discussion between all the participants. in the past many have tried mousse and they have failed, same with Tubliss. Why they failed we don't know. But I agree it is the logical solution. The technology and experience with them is much better now and the desert mousse should survive just fine. only question is the weight of the bike and what kind of effect that will have on long road sections. If i do something like this again, i will probably go with a Mousse and carry a tube just in case.
unbelievable journey and i am really gutted for you - i have to ask why not run mousse in the first place? i will never remove them from my dirtbike as out there in the wild i do not desire to spare thoughts or waste my energy on punctures....
Facinating tour. Where did you sleep each night, hotels/motels?
We stayed in towns at hotels/motels/Inn's or AirB&B's you need to prearrange all your rooms about 6 months in advance.
I watched every video. A gallant effort this year. What comes next now that there is no T1 anymore? Also how would one go about replicating this experience without gpx tracks (more of a T2)?
The waypoints are still available. but I am not sure how he will present the sections that do not have waypoints for the final release. It may just never be published and left to exist only in the past. there is a T2 out there to follow.
What tank bags are you using?
I custom made them. I go over them a little in day 5.
