@@Aaron_Bleu why do they need to sell MacBooks when this could be better and cost more both because of the initial price and because of the accessories? I don’t believe the cannibal market explanation, either way you sell something and make a profit and slow the production of what’s not selling. If it were simply cannibalisation, wouldn’t you see slower iterations of the MacBook Air? People with the M1 don’t really need an M2 or M3

One simple reason. IF Apple put MacOS on the new iPad M4 it wouldn't sell a single laptop on its line right now. So by limiting the M4 chip by software, they will profit more from the laptop line with MacOS installed. It's all about money, not hardware limitations.

None of you have actually used an iPad Pro, have you? You just need to download the right apps to do most of the work you do on a Mac. For people who work in the visual arts, the 13” iPad is a much better choice. I think you’d find that the iPad Pro with apple pencil is just a little bit more useful when trying to sketch out some graphic design ideas to a client on the spot than either a MacBook or a kindle. Command W will also close out any other application in your main screen. Also command shift, arrow is a bug. I can confirm that this works normally on my iPad and Magic Keyboard. I've used keyboard Shortcuts on the iPad for the last six years after ditching my Mac in 2018

For what the iPad does at the moment. I do believe we can replace the laptop. If you are a IT professional or your needs are a lot greater than others. I would say setting up a VM on your Home network and (with proper security rules) connect to it with Apache guacamole. This will allow you to use the iPad without any hurdles or limitations. Furthermore, we are at a time where we have plenty of options than what's offered from Apple. Example, you hate the magic keyboard, you can build a low profile wireless Bluetooth split keyboard and customize the key mappings (Lily 58). Yes, you will most likely spend more time and money for the convenience, but you are tailoring the experience for your needs.

I agree with some of the others that have said what makes the iPad different is that is a touch first display so it doesn’t relay on keyboard shortcuts as much. Things like closing an app if even need to do that are possible but probably not needed. Both have their place but having a touchscreen that is easily removable is a big plus.

If i hadn’t purchased the iPad Pro M4 13 inch with magic keyboard, I’d agree woth your opinion. Yes, it’s significantly better than the 13 inch M2 iPad (Pro+Air) thanks to the lighter weight and the new magic keyboard, but that’s it. Lack of delete key makes remote desktop painful, and the iPad version office apps, the external display scaling experience, the mouse/keyboard shortcuts, it can’t compete with any Mac. Honestly I’m comfortable paying $2000 for an upgraded iPad Pro with macOS, it’s still cheaper than the 13 inch MBA ($800) + 13 inch iPad Pro($1300) + $350 Magic Keyboard. But if it’s limited to iPadOS, I can only pay $500 for the 11 inch air+$3000 for a configured MBP.

OK, I use both an iPad and a MacBook Pro. But for years my iPad was my only "laptop". Many of the issues you had with the iPad not working like the Mac is a matter of getting used to how things are done on iPad. It is an iPad, not a Mac. And that means that it is touch first, trackpad second. By the way, why do you have an almost American accent if you are from Romania and live in the UK? I live in the US but I'm originally from PR? 🤔

Vlog-like, nice one. Likes how this video showcases the limitations of iPad Pro M4 and re-learning how we do works, productivity ones especially. Compare this with other videos telling us how great iPad Pro is or iPad Pro should be a Mac, this video is definitely spot-on. I've trade in my old devices i.e., Surface Pro X and iPad Pro 2020 to give iPad Pro another shot. It's definitely a re-learning experience everyday... it gets my works done but not without compromises, like how MS word format painter sometimes refuse to work (particularly in split-screen, with 2 words doc open side-by-side). Tips: drag the working doc bigger, it works... sometimes. Worse case if I get tired of this learning experience, I'll go with the new Surface Pro 11. Until then, I enjoy this iPad Pro interface.

My device usage started with the iPad first, then the MacBook and I use more the iPad as I’m more used to its shortcuts. MacBook can do more but it’s complicated. But they complement each other. Today I’m on a trip to Gran Canaria, and had to watch a class online. I trusted only the iPad and it was horrible. I usually watch from my MacBook and make notes on the iPad. Doing both at the same time, ditching the book for the digital version + having everything going on at the same time
The same device with an 11” screen, was chaotic, although it had enough power to it. Media consumption and note-taking are 10/10 with an iPad. Working with it really depends on what kind of work you do, it helps if you need to be as portable as possible, but at the end, you’ll feel like a big iPhone with a keyboard. My dream is to have a MacBook as powerful as an iPad in specs without needing a 16” device

I ended up getting the 1tb version simply because it was that time to get a “PRO” version of an iPad. It will be a purchase that I plan to keep for a while (probably til when Apple doesn’t do anymore updates on it lol) overall, I am satisfied with the device. As you said, it’s a great media device. I don’t game much but I do love to read charts and answer some emails. It’s a great tablet overall.

I am so stuck between which I should put more money into in my tech refresh: 1. Put more money into a Mac or 2. Put more money into an iPad. I’m a beginner video editor. I know how to easily use LumaFusion, but don’t know how smooth using Final Cup Pro would be. (I also own this software) I’m hoping to start a TH-cam channel and didn’t know which would work for it best. Which do y’all think is better for starting a TH-cam channel and would last for at least 5 years doing so

hotspotting works fine when I use my MacBook, so one less pro for the ipad. I replaced my home pc with m4 and I recognize all these friction points. On top of that I feel nervous when travelling only with this device - what if I encounter a problem I cannot overcome in IpadOS? However, I am happy with my choice of challenge, and there is still no way I can in a productive way replace my macbook I use for work. So, two expensive but great devices will be in my portfolio for years to come.

I have the 2020 12.9 iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard and love it. As an educator, it is portable, connects to all servers and can use it for teaching in class, planning lessons and taking notes using the Apple Pencil during meetings. Yes, I had to learn different shortcuts with a few tasks however, I would never go back to a notebook/laptop especially what the Department provides. A slow ACER machine worth 800 dollars with a battery that lasts 4 hrs. I see other teachers always searching for a power outlet to charge their device. My 2020 iPad Pro is light years ahead with regards to brightness, chip speed , battery performance and has an App Store with thousands of productivity and education apps. I wish all students had an iPad, the iPad 10 that is an amazing device and can accomplish all tasks students require. If only the Department of Education promoted an Apple Device and not the crappy ACER machines.

That's kinda what I'm looking at too. A replacement for the poor excuse of a laptop for my classroom, airplay to smart board, and replacing all my music scores to a digital form. My biggest concern is the awkwardness of an iPad when I have no other Apple products in my room or at home.

Hey Daniel, thanks for the great video. Due to the OS limitations and Apple’s marketing approach, iPad is not an actual MAC replacement yet. However, especially for me it fills in a very important gap for travels. I mostly use Safari, WhatsApp Web, Microsoft Office and Mail for work. This is what most people do. For such people, m4 11inch is a very good travel companion. I can multitask enough, I enjoy the beautiful screen, magic keyboard works very well, and it fits well to any tiny place. It does not wobble like 13 inch, it is much better on my lap compared to MBA and a much better entertainment device including mobile gaming like COD mobile and Netflix. Overall, it has become an enjoyable device for light work, entertainment during travels replacing MBA or as an MBA companion at the office or at home. You just need to accept it as it is for now and enjoy using it at different occasions.

    ipad pro HW is amazing
but the OS really needs to catch up
just depends on how far Apple would like to go
but if it’s in Steve’s day, he will perfect any of apple product instead of thinking about the market share between MBA/Ipadpro market share (or think way before both annouced)

Glad I watched this, I was nearly convinced but I can see the top heavy ergonomics is annoying on the lap there. You would have thought apple would have counterbalanced that with more weight in keyboard underside. Simple solution or am I being simple here? Annoying compromises are off-putting.

  • @chrisa4072

to be honest, Apple should allow better connectors to accessories that would instantly turn it into a MacOS laptop. the smart keyboard can hold extra features (ie - more storage, GPU, m-series processor) that would sync with the iPad for a modular setup. otherwise, most of us who use iPads as laptop replacements actually remote in to a cloud instance (ie - AWS, Azure, colo VMs, etc) and that works just as well as having a desktop OS (whether that’s Windows, Linux, or MacOS). i agree the screen is the best part of iPad and it’s a shame that we can’t use it for how we want to use it as a computing device.

Before diving into the idea, it's crucial to thoroughly understand how things work in practice. While some specialized use cases might benefit, the usefulness largely depends on your specific workflow and needs. In reality, if you frequently require even simple functions like copy and paste across multiple scenarios, sticking with a traditional laptop OS may save you a lot of frustration. The iPad OS is quite limited, especially in environments where cross-software functionality is essential. You can thank me later for this advice.

Since day 1, what the iPad does, it does very well. It will never replace a MacBook unless the iPad Pro gets released with MacOS. You can't install Crossover and then install and play Grand Theft Auto 5. You can't download emulators like MAME to play classic arcade games. You can't install BitTorrent and download movies. You can't install Garmin Basecamp and create travel routes for GPS. You can't install VMware Fusion and install guest operating systems. I take my iPad Air 4 whenever I travel and while watching TH-cam in bed. Otherwise, everything is done on my MacBook Pro. Apple has the power to change this but they never will.

The specifications look similar between the two devices, to me, and the minor correction... Your MacBook Air has 36TOPS(8-not 16). Also for myself, I found it impossible to work on the iPad. The iPad, like it used to be, is a device for consuming content. The laptop is for creation, with the slight exception of drawing work... That's amazing for traveling, no doubt; the cellular Internet is way more reliable on the iPad than hotspot use.
