  • Since first opening its doors in 2005, over 1,000 entrepreneurs have trod the Den’s hallowed boards. These next five memorable pitches remind us just how daunting the Den can be when you're stood in front of the Dragons.
    #1 - 00:01 - Bee London pitches Weave Got Style, her hair extensions franchise.
    #2 - 14:08 - Richard Bowness & Steve Tonkin pitch The Truncator, a log sawhorse that allows multi logs to be cut.
    #3 - 25:58 - David Brown pitches Graffiti Artist, Art and memory go hand in hand with this enterprising graffiti artist.
    #4 - 38:44 - Anne Hempstock pitches Cream Cutie, all-natural chocolate, and wine-based cream liquor.
    #5 - 48:36 - Husband and wife team Liz and Alan Colleran pitch the Duvalay - a zip-up memory foam mattress and duvet combo.
    An international sensation, Dragon's Den features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Den from our Dragons, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

If they have watched Dragon's Den - then they would know (a) know your numbers (b) don't over-valuate your business. I'm convinced that many people just go to the Den to promote their product on TV - free advertising.

He just had a very negative attitude and didn't have the statistics to back it up. The Nordics would be a great place to sell these, especially Finland. Lots of Finns have their own summer cottage and many have land with trees that they need to cut down. North America would also be a great market and some parts of South America I'm guessing.

      It's crazy how they aren't allowed to have a notepad with their numbers written down (especially when the Dragons themselves do) - and the entrepreneurs are expected to just stand there with nothing - expecting to have literally every number for every question completely memorised.

    • @SiriusMined

      A lot of people know how to provide the product, but don't understand business accounting. I didn't when I started my engineering firm (although I did understand the basics of accounting), and struggled when dealing with the banks/creditors to understand what they wanted and why. Also, my business model doesn't fit what they are used to, because equipment sales are just a small part of the business, and because most of it is milestone billing, monthly forecasts and balance sheets aren't really meaningful.

    • @SiriusMined
      @SiriusMined 3 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    • @Jessica7318
      @Jessica7318 3 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      @@NuttyJun To be fair, I don't think the Dragons having a notepad to jot down numbers is the same as an entrepreneur needing it. To explain:
      - The dragons have to listen to multiple pitches every day. They have to jot down the numbers for the purpose of conversation because the entrepreneur is presenting them information they don't know.
      - The entrepreneur by contrast doesn't have to present multiple businesses. They are supposed to know their business. Effectively, they're supposed to know what it costs them to produce what they sell; what they sell it for, how much each sale is worth to them and the aggregate of what that represents in income. What they're making vs what they're spending.
      - The Entrepreneur being expected to know the numbers for 'their business' is not unlike a student making a presentation on a single topic. A teacher may jot down notes because the teacher has to listen to 20 some-odd presentations and then question the students, etc. it's part of the process. A student making the presentation wouldn't be allowed to have their 'notes' on hand when they make the presentation since they're not supposed to just read it.
      - Now I understand the devil's advocate argument as well. I sometimes think: "Surely it wouldn't be so bad if they were allowed to have a sheet of paper that had their balance sheet information and they could refer to it. After all, the dragons place such high value on that information and if the entrepreneur can't give it, maybe the dragons lose out on a great investment because the entrepreneur couldn't articulate it properly" - in other words, not letting the entrepreneur have this information on hand could also cheat the dragons out of a good deal if they could see the information, realize the value, even if the entrepreneur can't explain it properly by heart. It's a lot of pressure for the entrepreneur to present their business with these numbers needing to be known by heart.
      But that's essentially part of this whole presentation. They're supposed to know it. This is their business, the one thing they're responsible for knowing when it comes to this presentation. It's expected of them that they can learn this by heart. Is it fair? It depends on who you ask. We've seen entrepreneurs who nail their numbers. Absolutely nail them. Then we've seen people who may know their numbers, but just falter under the limelight. Similarly there are people who simply say: "I don't know, you'll have to move on I guess.".
      In the end, there's a reason the dragons are allowed to jot down the numbers. It's because they're being told information they don't know, that they have to make a decision on. They also go through several pitches so numbers could get jumbled if they couldn't keep track of what they're hearing. It's like a teacher listening to a student's presentation given by heart. The teacher will grade the student in part on fielding questions. Those questions come from what the teacher hears in the student's presentation, because the teacher doesn't need to know that information before hand. The student had the duty of researching, learning, memorizing and then presenting a subject. So when the teacher listens to the presentation, they jot down a few notes so they can question the student on it after. Multiple students doing this means the teacher will be jotting down a few notes for every student's presentation. The teacher isn't expected to know what the 20 students presentations will be, he's expected (or she's expected) to listen to the presentation, take notes, then come up with questions based on what they heard for the grading process.
      Entrepreneurs here need to be intimately familiar with their business. They should know the fundamental numbers of the balance sheet. There are a core group of numbers that are particularly important and should be known. They are responsible for being able to present this one thing to the dragons. The dragons are responsible for listening and fielding questions based on what they hear. So they need to jot down what they hear in order to make an assessment and ask questions.
      I'm thankful for your comment and I hope this conveys why I think it's okay for the dragons to jot things down in the show while still being okay for the entrepreneur to be expected to know their numbers of their 1 business.
      Thanks-!

    Frankly, I think it‘s fine for them to have the numbers writen down. If they have it prepared, it means they did their homework… they might just be bad at memorizing numbers. Which doesn‘t mean you‘re bad at business.

    • @DodgaOfficial
      @DodgaOfficial 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think the point is that a good business person cares tremendously about the numbers, if they don't know the numbers or have even a rough idea of what it looks like off the top of their head, then that means the business is getting away from them and they're not being professional and making the necessary financial calculations to actually make the business work and not lose a ton of money. You can't run a successful business without having an idea of how much you're spending, how much you're making, etc etc, it's very telling to the state of the business if the owners don't even know the state of the most important thing in the business: how much money is being made or lost and what the projected future of the business is.
