  • Get the best advice on how to manage a corked (contused or bruised) muscle. A 'corky' is a common impact sports injury to the thigh, calf and gluteal (hip) areas. The muscle is deeply bruised and the muscle fibres can be damaged, just like a torn muscle. Pain and swelling can be significant, and a contused muscle needs to be taken seriously.
Ryan, a Sports Physiotherapist, explains the best management of a contused muscle, along with how to know how long it will take to recover.

Thank you for the video. What’s a basic immediate stretch or exercise to help recover the muscle after icing and initial discomfort?

@@MyphysiosaAuAdelaide the quad. Got hip checked in training. Soccer. I can’t run without pain. Walking no problem. I iced and compressed. Just curious what else I can do at home to rehab. Muscle contusion, quad.

@@roccosage8508 after day 3 you can do gentle self massage on your quad using oil/cream, gentle quad stretches to the point of pain and start some chair squats (minimal pain allowed).
When you can walk pain free , then start cycling, and other gym strength exercises
After a few weeks you might be ready to start running again. Best of luck. 👍

Do corkys always have visible bruising? Or can they be invisible? And if so, does that mean it's not as serious?

Some corkies can just cause deep bruising and might not have visible bruising on top.
You will normally have swelling though. The severity is usually graded by the loss of strength and function of the muscle involved

What do you mean: "run it at on a Tuesday night."

Hi, in Australian Rules football we usually have training sessions on a Tuesday night after the weekend game. So referring to going to training and just running out the corky, which is never ideal!
