Numbness and burning sensation in quad getting worse for years. Saw the doc without any relief. Walk 2.5 miles a day and it always starts to burn/tingle/numb-up after about 1.75 miles. Tried the 3rd stretch and I could really feel the tightness. Did for 3 days. OK the first during my walk but problem after going to bed. Yesterday and today NO PAIN during my walk and I'm getting ready to go to bed. Wish me luck. Thank you so much Bob and Brad. Used to work on a fishing resort as a boy up in Aitkin Minnesota - near Brainard and Mil Lacs. You two are so Minnesotan!
UPDATE: 2 weeks later: NO PAIN - can walk 3 miles and no burning or tingling. Stretch it every morning and it is feeling wonderful.

My right thigh has been numb 15 years, my doctor told me it was MS. Luckily I didn't believe him but had no answers. About 8 years ago I stumbled across a couple of paragraphs in a medical journal online that gave the term Meralgia Parasthetica and gave surgery as the only treatment option. Last year it really started flaring with shooting nerve pain that woke me at night and I couldn't walk more than 10 minutes, causing severe quality of life loss. I went to a chiropractor and x-rays showed my hips are substantially tilted, certainly causing the pinch. The most important thing for me was to realize my recliner was causing the flare up so now it's just numb again. I'm happy to see this condition finally seeing the light of day and thank you for the exercises. I will be trying them.

I wish I had known earlier that others had experienced this sensation of water. Years ago, I carefully described this sensation to my neurologist. When I finally quit going to her, I read my files and saw that she had repeatedly summed up my symptoms as "patient reports feeling bugs crawling on her body". I never once mentioned bugs. Needless to say, I didn't get any help from her. So glad I now have the two of you. Thank you!

After a year of PT i still had nerve pain down the side of my leg and sometimes both legs. Since I'd already been doing the press ups, I added the hip flexor stretches and it has solved the problem. Id been suffering from progressively worse symptoms for probably 7 years. The hip flexor stretch took about 2 months before it helped the pain. So glad i stuck with it. I find doing this twice a day works well for me.
    You guys are the BEST!

since you asked in the beggining of the video,
Meralgia Paraesthetica, comes from the Greek "Παραισθητικη Μηραλγια" (pronounced as "Parestheeteeki Meeralgia",
which derives from "Μηρος" (Meeros) which is the medical term for "Thigh", and "Αλγος" (Algos) which is the medical term for "Pain"
so basically Meralgia is Thigh-Pain, and Paraesthetica is basically something you can feel (from the Greek "Αισθηση" (Estheesi).
So yea, there you have it, and here i am having that bloody condition myself!
Thanks for this very helpful video :)

It then started radiating up higher and to the top side of my buttocks.. I couldn’t sit in a chair nor lay down.. After the very first round of stretches, especially the 3rd stretch, I got instant relief.. You guys are doing the lords work.. Can’t thank you guys enough ❤

I have had nerve pain in my left thigh for 13 years (since I was 19) and nothing I’ve ever done or been told has helped. I’ve done physical therapy, yoga, orthotics, lost weight, medication, nothing has helped. No one has ever mentioned MP to me. I’m crying because this could actually be a solution to my problem. I Googled it and my symptoms match exactly. I have an appointment with my neurologist next Friday and I will mention this to him. I’m sure he would have come to this conclusion too, as he’s scheduled an EMG and nerve study. But thank you for giving me some hope. I know surgery isn’t your go-to, but it’s a viable option if necessary. THANK YOU! You ARE the best physical therapists on the internet! 💙

Just before you mentioned the odd symptom some patients describe as feeling like COLD WATER on the thigh, that is exactly what I said out loud!
Wahoo! I can only get relief by digging my thumb against the ilius just where you showed the nerve running thry Sam the skeleton, and as showed on your own body. Likewise, the femoral nerve sit-to-stand test nailed that issue, as well.
I have had low back pain, hip & leg pain, and dysfunction in all three areas since stepping into a gopher hole and falling down hard. Neither my doctor nor my chiropractor diagnosed this!🤯

To now having almost no pain in that area and now it's a pain but not as intense all around the shin. This is 3 weeks later after having had a back injury at the gym. This pain and discomfort is aggravated more when I try to walk. I try to walk as much as I can even after the discomfort shows up. This **** is so awkward and it makes no sense. I don't have Healthcare so I'm pretty much left on my own to try and figure this out. Hello Bob & Brad! I just found this video after googling "pain in outer left thigh".
I watched your video all the way through then tried the first stretch. I believe Bob called it the "Extension Line". I layed down on my stomach and got my hands under my shoulders as Bob intructed. Before I even pushed up, my lower back popped! 💥
Then I did the other two stretches and I feel much better.
Thank you for sharing these stretches.
I enjoyed your clarity and comroderie!
I "liked" your video and subscribed to your channel.

Unfortunately I can't do any of your exercises due to postop THR restrictions but I will be discussing this with my PT to see if there's anything I can do until I don't have to sleep on my back anymore (that's the only time I have symptoms).

Your videos are extremely helpful. Throughout the month and change that I experienced severe pain, I started with two trips to the hospital , where they just gave me drugs. I’m not a big fan of drugs, so I turned to Dr. Internet, and there have been a few great physical therapists, but you guys cover the most ground. I also started going to a massage therapist and bought a foam roller, both of which have been massively helpful.
getting better little by little. It seems it was a few different problems stemming from being hit by a car years ago, but also the inactivity during the pandemic. Normally I’m very active, cycling, hiking, all sorts of festivals, but over the past year I barely even worked at all-I’m a film and television actor, which is not a sit down job.
Anyway, following your self treatment advice as well as working on basic fitness, I think I’m solving issues that were longstanding beyond my current pain.
One funny bit. I actually used my 🎸 Stratocaster for self massage of the pain in my thigh. You should definitely add a solid body guitar to your arsenal of physical therapy tools. It works!

I have the same thing if I stand for more than 15 to 20 min my thigh goes numb then starts a burning feeling then I have to start walking around or go sit down anything to get pressure off that leg I though it may be nerves in the back good to know this might help.

Me too! My upper left leg gets tingly and numb for about a minute or so and I notice it more when I stand in place for to long. I have to (sit down) or shift the pressure onto my right leg then the cooling sensation starts to trickle the numbness away. I was just wondering if it was circulation issues due to my plantar fascitis. My pain felt more like muscle soreness after keeping my leg in the same position for to long.

I've been scouring the web to figure out what's wrong for weeks - my weird clue has been that if roll my shoulders back and half windmill my arm back, or do a half lunge or anything that stretches the leg back with my shoulders well back, the horrible pain in my thigh when i straighten from sitting or bending just disappears. Diagnosing backward from what works - nothing else does. So it's a start anyway. Thanks you guys!

I had a hip replacement about 15 months ago and recently have had random thigh pain (front and outer) and weakness in leg. It was enhanced and more frequent after starting a walking program. Went to an ortho doc who said he thought it was nerve pain as my hip replacement looks fine. Wants me to go to a pain management clinic so I made an appt.
Last night after walking a good distance to/from a baseball field my thigh pain was awful. I made the mistake of doing an IT band stretch while crossing my bad leg over my good and pulling into my chest. This morning it was so much worse.
Anyway watching this if it’s my femoral nerve that makes sense as I was pulling that area in instead of stretching it out. Tried these and felt much better. Especially the first one. Thank you!!!

My problem was that I had Meralgie Paresthetica, femoral nerve pain, and periformis syndrome all at the same time! Not fun. After much research I finally was able to self-diagnose and treat all three. The first exercise Bob demonstrated has worked very well for the femoral nerve pain, which has been the most stubborn of the three to fix. But instead of multiple press ups I just do one and hold it for 30 seconds, 2-3x per day. One final point, if you're a vegetarian or a recent convert to a plant-based diet, don't forget to take a B12 supplement! Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to nerve damage and pain that can mirror the symptoms of femoral nerve problems, and that's only one of many very serious symptoms of B12 deficiency.
(Update April 2022 - what I originally thought was periformis syndrome has turned out to be a compressed nerve caused by a bulging disc. I switched from doing the press-ups and holding for 30 seconds, to doing it exactly as Bob and Brad recommended, that is, doing a set of 10 every hour (now once every 2 hours). Very good results using the recommended method.)

@Miss Viking Could it be the form of B12 you are taking? I have the MTHFR mutation and get sick if I take the synthetic form (cyanocobalamin), but the methyl form (methylcobalamin) helps me a lot. I hope that you find something that works for you.

    • @00bikeboy
      @00bikeboy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@suzannedavis9550 Thanks for the comment. I know there's a difference of opinion in the scientific community about whether cyanocobalamin or methylcobalamin is the better option, and what the right dose should be. In my case, after about 2 weeks of taking 1200mcg of methylcobalamin my nerve pain vanished.
