Mike, those hardened shafts/spindles are easily cut by holding them in the lathe chuck putting the lathe on a speed you'd normally use for machining that particular diameter and using a 4" or 5" angle grinder with a 1mm thick cutting disc against the shaft as it's rotated by the lathe. An air duster gun is also positioned to blow cooling air onto the job to keep it cool and preserve the seals of the bearing cartridge.
This method saves the necessity for "specialised" lathe cutting tools and it's a method I've used many times for "parting off" hardened, normally not easily machineable steels, it works fine...

Just cut the extra shaft off with a grinder. There is no need for accuracy.

I have done the same modification using a Ford straight six 4lt model water pump. In Australia we know them as the EA Falcon model early 90's. The complete water pump cost me $13 AU. Beats $385 plus for genuine. It lasted me 100,000km, and in process of doing it again.

    Hello Mike
Next time you need to part off a piece of case hardened spindle or suchlike item cover your lathe beds, and use an angle grinder with a thin abrasive cut off disk on the spinning job, only grind through the case hardening, complete the partition with a parting off tool.

    Hi Mike
How we got around a dry bearing on the front fan cover was to drill a hole in the back plate of the bearing and used a grease nipple with the syringe needle and regressed the bearing. Sealed the hole with a good epoxy. Have regreased the bearing 3 times and the Disco 1 Td300 has 680 000kms on it. Time for another timing belt.

Hi Mike, greeting from Aus i've done a few of these bearings over here using the same John deer bearing, for a replacement flange I've found the a Ford XC, XD, XE and XF falcon water pump uses the right size diameter and right size thread and spacings, only pushes the fan forward 2-3mm in towards the radiator more but never been an issue

Hi again Mike, sorry for wrong info in my last reply, hope this info is more accurate for 'ya. Search for bearing number '885802' and prefix that number with the bearing mfger of your choice. So that is, if you have a preference for SKF search SKF 885802 and you will get various hits. What comes up under SKF is BR885802(as a part number of theirs) Similarly with Koyo, a part number of 885802RS seems to be a part number they may use. INA also seem to make them too, their part number is 4VH22055. Searching for these part numbers all seem to point in some way all back to JD water pump bearings. And if you find an 'aftermarket' part supplier, ie. a bearing specialist .. they list all manner of manufacturers of this JD pump bearing(as exampled above). The other tidbit of info I found about this bearing: Same bearing and flange as used in Ford Transit VG('88-00) models with the 2.5TD motor. This bearing and flange is also used for fan hub duties. Ford no longer stock it tho. Can be found at a few auto parts places. If you search at transitcenter dot uk for ford part number '974F-8A641-AB' for the bearing, and ford part number 864F-8K600-AC will show results for the flange. Here in Aus, many guys use a Ford Falcon waterpump. Complete assembly, rip it to pieces, steal the bearing and flange, chop off rear shaft and impeller, easy done and cheap. Can't recall that part number tho. Maybe Ford US have a similar waterpump too(ie. flange already fitted).

Thanks for the info! We have only just got the Transits over here and they have different engines and mainly petrol
I think I could get the flanges made for C$10 each = problem is I need to order 50!

Don't use this shaft/fan to lift out a 300tdi engine especially if your mate didn't actually undo the engine mounts both top and bottom because the shaft will snap and you'll end up looking at this to fix it. Great video chap thank you very much 😊

    Hi Mike,
Love your videos. I'm a semi-retired Subaru mechanic in Oregon, and enjoy your process of going through your restorations. There are lots of tips that you share that are based on lots of experience doing the work. This is stuff that's not in manuals or taught in schools. This saves folks who are just getting into this work having to learn them the hard way. Great job passing your experience on, and saving folks loads of time!
A question and some thoughts on your fan bearing. Aren't these actually "bearing assemblies" that are made up of 4 components? 1. The inner shaft, 2&3. two permanently sealed ball or roller bearings that are pressed onto the shaft, and 4., an outer sleeve that the outer races of the bearings are pressed into?
*** update, I got a closer look at the original factory part via a link one of the other responders sent. While these are probably assemblies, it looks like they crimped the ends of the outer sleeve down to hold the bearings in place. If they had used spring clips instead, these would have been rebuildable. That groove on the outside of the sleeve may also indicate that they crimped locked the front of the rear bearing in place by pressing in that groove. It's the typical case of the manufacturer saving a few pennies during manufacturing by eliminating cutting inside grooves in the sleeve and the spring clips that would have made these rebuildable. I have run into the same issue with newer riding lawnmower deck blade spindles. The older ones were rebuildable with 2 $4 bearings, but the newer ones aren't for the same darn reason.
I also found an interesting write-up on an Australian Land Rover site that covers some options for replacing the bearing, and sourcing a replacement fan mount here:
    www.aulro.com/afvb/projects-and-tutorials/61474-300tdi-viscous-fan-bearing-solutions.html
Which brings up the idea of using bearing assemblies from automotive water pumps, some of which may very well have fan mount that could fit these. I know that the Ford Falcon they are mentioning wasn't produced for the North American market, but I seem to recall that other ford and possibly some GM fan dampeners may well have the same female thread used on these motors. If so, wrecking yards might be a great source for inexpensive used replacements. You would just need to take a caliper with you to measure the shaft diameter, the outer diameter of the bearing assembly, and check the bolt pattern and size of the fluid dampener mount. For the DIY folks, the Australian write-up mentions using a cutoff wheel on a grinder to remove the unneeded rear shaft, so a trip to the machine shop could be avoided. Just go slow so you don't get the shaft too hot and overheat the bearing.***

Hi Mike, new timing covers cost £130 in UK, you could sell those bearings & JP’s flanges in your shop so folks can replace their bearings at home. Cost in UK for this bearing is 3* and imported from US bout same. Flanges are brittle cheese so most may not survive home DIY extraction.
On another note: I’ve seen two different types of crankshaft seal in front cover, one two piece type the inner seems to rotate with crank, other one piece type is normal lipped seal, not sure if/why/when they changed if you can cast any light?

Do you have a solution for stopping the heat from use from allowing bearing to get loose in the cover? I live in australia and this seems to be an issue in summer with ac on as the temp in the engine bay can reach 90ish deg Celsius. I was thinking of using a grub screw or similar?
