    That explains the difference between good and bad injector washers for me! I have asked the difference before and was told all sorts. Hard to believe they are selling us copper washers that aren't copper! I just did that job on my Puma with an injector seal kit from Ebay.............

    Thanks again for introducing us to the Dismantling tool.
    Refurbished a viscous fan yesterday, had to split the two halves apart. One tap and it came apart..
    On a separate note, I bet Britpart don't even know their washers are steel. They have probable bought them cheap from China and have never checked.

      I have had it out with them a few times, but I do like the paper gaskets and as I was doing an order from them it made sense to add them in rather than using Bearmach
      Shipping now is very expensive!

    Thank you. I didn't know that copper was compressible and that's why it makes a good seal, makes sense. And I would have never thought to check it with a magnet! I'll check my assorted copper box later :)

    Hello mr. Mike! I bet you know it, but i'll say it: mwm is a big company of diesel engines, called mwm international and it is, nowadays, controlled by navistar. They build the engines for ford rangers, chevrolet s10 and troller t4, here in brazil, among other applications. They are a great company and their parts are very good quality ones. It is a brand you can trust, i may say. It is oem parts, i mean. Mwm bought the company Maxion, the one that build the 300tdi engines for brazilian Defenders - under LR license and project (also used in ford ranger, chevrolet s10, mercedes sprinter 310, etc - brazilian versions - at that time). But, the most important, the brazilian company develop engine technology apart from american company (navistar headquarters). So, do not worry: you have a good quality part in your hands.

    • @defeyago
      @defeyago 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's right! We use MWM parts here in Argentina too. My tuned 300tdi Defender has a MWM forged crankshaft. I got tired of braking genuine crankshafts.

    Mike I have to thank you for explaining in detail what and why it has to be done the way you are doing it. I don't have a land rover and probably never will unless I could pick up a series 1 land rover for peanuts 😂. Im no mechanic either but I have learnt a lot from your videos on just how a engine works and runs. I'm waiting for you to show us how to put the steering wheel on the correct side😉

    Hi Mike, Thanks for the video. More stuff I didn't know about the making poor quality or useless parts. 👍
    I too thought you could not get rubber wrong but I've found 200Tdi rocker gaskets are too plasticy if aftermarket and leak and prop shaft gaiters likewise failing after a year because not real rubber or a quality synthetic.

  • @defeyago
    @defeyago 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm in all agreement with you Mike. Plus I would use genunine MWM rear crankshaft seal with 7 holes. You need to drill and tap the rear bearing cap. Never an oil leak again.

    G'Day Mike
    Mate since a few years back now due to one of your earlier video's I've started waving a magnet over every bit that goes back onto my engines that I do. Even on the Td5's and the TDCi 2.2's I'm still finding Copper clad steel crush washers and other supposedly non steel metal bits an bobs and its not just Britpart. Its all in a stupid quest to save a quid when actually in the end they loose thousands because we stop buying their junk.

    • @BritannicaRestorations
      @BritannicaRestorations  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You cannot beat a handy magnet for checking copper washers - how many have stripped threads trying to tighten them up?

  • @dieselhatz4247
    @dieselhatz4247 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Dormer taps are made in Brazil, never had a problem with them, their metals ain’t bad. I’d have more trust in a Brazil head, than a Chinese head.

  • @nzrestoration9486
    @nzrestoration9486 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Another great video. I think we all might be missing the point here! If Land Rover had sold genuine parts at a reasonable cost we would all buy them and the aftermarket companies such as Britpart would not exist! It would have been a viable revenue stream for LR judging by the profits made by Britpart each year. But then again if you are passing steel washers off as copper maybe that is where profits are made, very deceitful. I hate doing a job twice because of poor or faulty parts, do it once and do it properly! That’s what you do Mike and that’s way we all love your channel.

    • @BritannicaRestorations
      @BritannicaRestorations  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I said the same a while back - if LR followed the Toyota pattern they would have had a fantastic advantage - genuine parts at reasonable prices - not the gouging like LR do
      For example ( trade prices)
      AMR6105 - Switch-indicator/horn/ headlamp dip
      Lucas - Taiwan / China - £16.69
      Land Rover (same manufacture = Lucas) £126.45
      BP ( trade) £12.97 China
      Ten times more for the same part!

  • @MrRobmellor
    @MrRobmellor 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Why are we buying washers from China or India? They are such easy things to make that I could make them on the old fly-press in my garage. Years ago I used to sell production off-cuts to a bloke in Wolverhampton, instead of buying new steel he bought ANY metal strips that were clean and shiny such as guillotine off cuts at 50% over scrap price, he made a fortune and became a very rich man. I cant understand whats going on here in the UK, we seem to be importing scrap and not leading the world as we once did. Sorry for the rant Mike, but somebody has to say it. Looking forward to the full rebuild by a real tradesman, best wishes from Yorkshire Rob.

  • @davidwoods80
    @davidwoods80 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Mike, will you need to rebalance the new crank, as it was balanced for the weight of the stock rods, not the lighter replacements? Am I overthinking this? Cheers!

    • @BritannicaRestorations
      @BritannicaRestorations  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Maybe overthinking as all the big ends are the same weight now, so should not effect balance -but I did give it some thought - if all the rods and pistons are the same, then it should be fine - after all, the factory does not match rods..

  • @JA-pb7oz
    @JA-pb7oz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I must confess that I now spend the extra money, I've had so much trouble in the past with Britpart and was forever redoing things. Since I started to fit the more expensive OEM parts, the reliability of my 110 has been really good. I just can't understand why Britpart seems hell bent on using materials that are substandard when quality materials would probably add just a few pence per set, their profit margin would be similar and most importantly their reputation may gain.

    • @BritannicaRestorations
      @BritannicaRestorations  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is funny with suppliers - the CV's, stubs and hubs I got from Britpart a few weeks ago were really good - it seem as as if the cheaper stuff is really cheap

  • @jaco451
    @jaco451 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I cant see if its been mentioned, but we found it better not to fit the rear main seal gasket.. And "KAK" is a proudly South African word. I also learned something about the washers.

  • @SiCrewe
    @SiCrewe 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hang on, I'm a bit confused...
    This is the 300tdi that was overheating and had massive blow-by, right? The one that was getting a skimmed head and then put back together on a budget?
    Did the customer change his mind and decide to go for a full engine rebuild?
    Surely if you're putting a new crank and new (balanced!) con-rods in it, it's now also getting new pistons & rings and, ideally, a rebore too?
    I realise these are "cheap" parts but they're still perfectly serviceable so it seems daft to be fitting them into an engine block that remains fundamentally sketchy.
    Or, are you "just following orders"?

  • @weaton25
    @weaton25 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Why do they do it for the cost of a few small copper washers it just seems mad when the rest of the kit is good to spoil it by using plated steel ones to fool people into thinking that they are copper there is no logic in it at all.
