Hi Mike I have just fitted a water pump on my landrover defender 1988 19j engine. Water is dripping from a small round hole under the pump. Pump is brand new .thanks
@@BritannicaRestorations Shame really. That's the sort of Defender that, in the UK, I'd buy in a heartbeat... as long as the chassis was okay and the price was right. I guess we don't realise how lucky we are to have access to heaps of used LR bits in the UK.
I feel for you on this one! I can’t believe the owner wouldn’t recon this engine, what was the point of spending the money on the top end, false economy in my view but then I don’t own it!
I love watching these videos - quite mesmerising. So much mechanicing and fiddling about. I have had an old 80 series Landcruiser forever, but really know very little about it. A lousy hobby really. All I have learnt is how to change fluids and filters.
We had a IH Farmall Cub with slightly out of spec cylinder clearances. Dad put chrome rings in and once seated seemed to reduce consumption. It had a rain shutter on the exhaust that would puff up and down at low rpm. Total loss breather pointed down.
I had an old 1978 VW golf Diesel that had so much blow by it would move one litre of oil into the "catch can", aka a four litre oil bottle, every 200 klms. Couldn't leave it to recirculate to the intake because it used to do the "runaway" thing, now that was fun whilst you were driving down the road. As they say, that 300Tdi is "Roger Ramjetted"...
Like you said in the last vid, it needs a rebore and pistons. That amount of movement in the pistons is not OK. Not your fault, Mike. Customer is always right, right? No warranty on this job Mike.
As you have pointed out quite often, plenty of money spent on suspension, winch, and other accessories, but none on basic maintenance. I hope the owner has a fairly small farm, because I reckon he's in for some walking.
Must be the season for it mike . Just started rebuilding mine for the same reason . Oil consumption was horrendous and the breather pressure was worse than in your video !
Yes its a tough call when it comes to customer relation, when i used to run a business i would tell customers similiar things, but they would want to do the cheap fix and it would backfire on them, motors are the same there is no short cuts you got to fix them properly. Those motors need to be serviced all the time or they end up like that one. My land rover county is the best out of all of them because of the 4bd1 and the ease of fixing and servicing them.
Even though it is going to be a "farm" vehicle, it now needs a sticker on the bottom of the windscreen which says "check oil daily", plus a couple of 5 litre cans in the back ready.
Sad really. The work done on the head & cooling system is something you could take satisfaction from sorting out... but the bottom end turns it into another one of those jobs that you never want to mention ever again. I guess this is the sort of engine they were talking about when they say the best thing about the 300tdi is that it'll carry on running (just about) long past the time it should really give up the ghost. Good lesson for anybody who watches the video's, though, so there's that.
Yes - this why I offer scrap price for used Tdi engines on the floor - EVERY engine is excellent according to seller - it is only when you go through all the time and effort to install it that you find out it is junk These are engines over 20 years old - what do people expect? To be like the day they drove out of the factory?
Talk to me about a catch tank Mike. I suspect my number 3 is loosing compression and smokes like a beast on start up. When I get the time the engine is coming out so I can do the pistons/ rings. Will a catch tank take some of the oil away from the exhaust to get this through the next emissions test! A bodge I know, but needs must?
Hello mr. Mike, how are you sir? What could be the cause of this back pressure? I mean, the pressure inside the cylinders (from combustion) is leaking through the piston rings, then going to the sump and then coming all the way up via cyclone breather bottom hose? Or the exhault gases are leaking to the sump and then passing thru the oil ways to the top of the head? How can the fumes get there? Thanks!
The exhaust gas passes down past the worn piston rings, into the sump, the sump becomes pressurised, forcing they gasses up to the top of the engine via oil return passages. (These return passages are for oil from the top of the engine to drain to the bottom) When you take you oil cap off, you can see it puffing in time to the combustion.
@@BritannicaRestorations yes I think so Whatever since pressure in coolant circuitry sound s like head gasket broken I will remove head , check the inside and make the test you made with gazoil in each cylinder to see what this is about... I can hear the pain in your voice to let this one go running like that. You have done what the customer asked. He is happy, it starts and runs, to him it is just a farm vehicle. It may only do a few hundred miles a year. A Doctor once told me, the whole body is connected, a pain in one area may be caused by something else. Vehicles are the same. A damaged radiator could have been the start, a few bottles of Rad Weld kept it going until finally, a new radiator was fitted. But all that Rad Weld was now blocking the heater core. That then overheated the back of the engine which caused all the overheating problems and other issues. A tiny pin hole, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage further down the line. Unfortunately people don't keep on top of the maintenance. If anyone thinks the new Defender is going to last in Africa, they should watch your videos of how difficult is is to maintain them in Africa. The 200/300 tdi's do incredible well to last as long as they do out there.
Bodgetastic! :/ Shame you cant fit a second filter in series with that one to catch more oil and drain back to the sump before feeding it to the intake ?(after the air filter!)... or a way of draining the catch tank to the sump. As you say, its probably not going to get emptied! Could be a nice vehicle if the owner cared enough to spend some money on it!
Help! At the end there the breather hose is leaking oil out of it. What is the cause of this and how do you fix it? I’m pretty sure this is happening in mine. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
@@BritannicaRestorations how can one tell the vacuum pump is bad if the brakes are feel normal and not stiff and there is vaccum going into the brake servo as noted by removing the suction hose from the servo.
Mike simply wait till it's Brass-Monkies degrees and it won't start without using 24v and a can of "startUbastard" .... thats when the owner has to decide on the usage of the truck as either a summer toy or a all year user. If I lived where you are up in Canukistan, and I needed a 12month workhorse, I'd have a gas (petrol) truck like your V6 project.
So from my experience here in the uk this engine has in the past, snapped a timing belt, damaged push rods, punched a hole into the rocker cover when the piston hit open valves. The open valve has hit the piston so hard it has 'pinched' the top compression ring, the ring sometimes snaps but always fails to seal properly. Rebore is not always needed but new pistols n rings as a minimum. I have done several of these types of repairs... not cheap!
Hmm, (things that make you go ...) that explains a lot, I suppose you can only do what you can, (or what the customer has money for) he wont have trouble with that head for a while, pity.
As soon as you rocked the piston with the head off in the other video I went there goes the compression as you already knew. Pity fund aren’t available the long way round is often the shortest way home But try explaining that well that’s a total other topic
Unfortunately in general in Africa vehicles are not maintained on a regular basis but fixed only when absolutely necessary ,so oil and filters may never get replaced during the vehicles life ,hence they become totally worn out scrap eventually ,however due to good climate body remains good in appearance .Dont import secondhand vehicles from Africa they have led a hard life indeed !
It seems daft to me to spend all of that money on getting the head and other things sorted and leaving those sloppy pistons that was never going to end well I now that money is short but at least if he gets the engine properly sorted it would be much simpler to sell when he gets tired of it.
Put the pipes back and film it! Real life runaway engine! Some people just don't deserve to own a Defender! Shame really looks a nice motor, but destined to die and left to rot by the owner.😢😢😠😠
