    • @TMKJG24
      @TMKJG24 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tomeisha Sanders I didn't experience any shaking just the knocking noise when you slightly turn the steering wheel in either direction but you can't hear it while driving tho

    I saw this video and was amazed. My 2011 Sonata would make a rattling noise and shake when I hit bumps. The part is $5 but the labor is $400! I called the dealer and mentioned this video. They replaced the bushing for free.

    After watching the video i decided to tackle this job myself. Ill see if i can fill in some of the gaps. 1. park your car, push the seat all the way back, make sure steering wheel is straight turn off car. 2. Disconnect the battery. 3. Remove the side panel above the emergency break and door. this part is not visible when door is closed. it can be popped off, i used a plastic putty knive to get my fingers under it. Like i said it just pops off, its V shaped. 4. remove the panel below the steering wheel near your knees. should be 4 screws 2 on the bottom and 2 on the side where you popped the v shaped cover off. be careful when removing as your start button and (my car) traction control button and light dimmer are connected to it. you will need to pop it out and reach in and disconnect those wires. 5. Turn steering left (its hard but can be done) to remove the screw on the right side behind the wheel, you will have to turn just a quarter, not turn it the other direction, half from this position to get to the left screw. Now you will have 1 screw on the very bottom. once these 3 screws are out you can remove the bottom plastic piece from the steering wheel. I would leave the top piece connected. I just used duct tape to hold the top out of the way as i didn't want to peel the cloth portion off. Now you should be able to see everything. 6. You will have to remove 4 bolts off one bracket. this bracket doesn't appear to support anything but the plastic part you already removed. 7 now you will see the 4 bolts that actually hold the steering wheel up. You can remove all 4 without the steering wheel coming down but the steering wheel will move around and change position. Before doing this i would advise in removing the white/beige color fuse block on the left, it has 2 bolts holding it in. You can unplug all the cables as each plug has its own shape so you don't have to worry about labeling them or putting them back in the wrong spot. It took me about 2 hrs to complete. I took lots of breaks as it is hard on your back if you are an old man like me. hahah...but it is really simple. I would do it in the shade and have something for your knees...i used knee pads...but i was on my knees a lot. 8 now you should be at the video...after placing part back in Just go in reverse and you should be good to go. My car is a 2012 Kia Optima SX, problem started at 88k miles. i used this part number from a Hyundai dealership. I believe its the same number for Kia as well. 56315-2K000FFF Price was 2.18 at the dealership.

      Thank you for the excellent guide! Along with this video I fixed this in 1hr, 5 minutes. There was only the middle left of my coupling, everything else was shredded. Ordered the part from Amazon since the dealership isn't really convenient. Was about $6 on Amazon.

    yours is one of the best video's I've seen on replacing the coupler. I paid to have mine done by the Kia dealer they were cheaper than the local Hyundai dealer. If people do take the column out they have to be careful to mark the shaft in order to put it back in the exact same place or they will have to pay to have the steering top dead center reset electronically

  • @DieselBenz

    Hey, thank you for this video. I watched it and ordered the coupler. It was under $6 from Amazon. Took me 30 minutes to change, thanks to your video. It's my wife's car and it's probably still under warranty. But this was less hassle for me to do myself than schedule an appointment, take it up there, wait... I hate going to the dealership.

    Thank you so much for this video, I cannot express enough how this helped. The dealership wanted $385.00 to replaced the coupler. I was able to find the coupler online for Uber $10.00 and the replacement process took a little over an hour. Thank you again for making this video available.

    I have a 2011 Hyundai Sonata Limited might be different but I missed a climate control plastic ducting and I broke it off at the bracket when I dropped the steering column some super glue fixed it.
    One other thing this steering column is quite heavy with that motor attached to it did take some grunt work to put it back on.
    Thanks for the video

    Thought this might be my problem due to clunking noise turning the wheel and rattle going down gravel drive as well as shake above 65 mph. Took apart and bushing was fine. Discovered the problem was the bolt on the steering column spindle was about 1/2 turn loose which was just enough to cause the problem. Only noticed slightly loose by wiggling the shaft with the bolt slot facing me.

  • @zorst99
    @zorst99 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    In case some of you take your car in to the dealer and they say it's your motor or your steering column you should question it. I was told that by a couple of dealers that it was one of those items. I was told it was going to cost me 12 hundred to 14 hundred dollars and in fact it turned out to be the coupler as I suspected. When you have your dealer do it tell them to mark the steering column and keep the wheels and the steering wheel in forward position. I wish I had told my guys to do it, they didn't and it was a mess.

  • @indynd710
    @indynd710 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I did this today on a 2011 Sonata. The worse part it taking apart the dash. You will need a round head 1/4" ratchet for the T30 screws. A pear head will not allow you to get close enough because it hits the motor housing.
    Took maybe an hour and a half to do. The video shows you what you need, but I'll also add the to get the lower steering column cover off, you have to turn the wheel 90 degrees each way to get to the little Phillips screws out behind the wheel.

    Thank you so much for this! I got a new tire put on and they didn't balance it properly. Didn't vibrate really until I hit 70mph which where I usually drive, I don't do very often, though sometimes. However my lazy ass kept putting it off because it wasn't that big of a deal.
    When I did finally get the tire balanced, vibration was gone, but now there was a clunking sound and it sounded like my car was about to fall apart whenever it hit a bump. It sounded like an expensive problem, so I put this off too since money is tight. So glad to find out that it's pretty easy/quick fix and I managed to get the part for like 5$ USD with free shipping off of ebay.
    So thanks again for making this video! And to others out there, don't be dumbass procrastinator like me!

    But I just bought a '16 Elantra, brand new, and wonder how long before this needs to be taken care of.

    My father has a problem with his 2013 Hyundai Sonata steering. When the temperature gets above 60 degrees the wheel sticks. You constantly have to make adjustments to keep the car going straight on the highway. It's very exhausting if you are on a long road trip. We've taken it to the dealer twice and they tell us there is nothing wrong with it.
    I wonder if this is what is causing the issue. It's strange how it only happens when it's above 60 degrees.

We tried the brake lights and they're connected. Is it possible that having the battery disconnected overnight, the smart key lost its connection? This was fixed at a dealer in Dubai 6 months ago in a 2013 Santa Fe and the problem has resurfaced, and dare I say it worse than before. First they said it was the steering motor and after a curt call with them (they are known for extracting money for "installing parts that may fix the problem), where they refused to let me speak to the mechanic directly, they settled on changing the bush. The car is back in with them now where they are saying that the bush the rack and the steering motor needs changing...... they seem to have no idea what the issue is or how to do a proper diagnosis. It seems they are just changing parts for the sake of it to hopefully hit bulls eye. They just rang and said no ma'am, steering motor no longer needs replacing..... seriously [slaps forehead].so tomorrow I pick it up with a new rack and bush - wonder how long this fix lasts!Has everyones issue been sorted or has it come back?

    guys can someone please help me. I have the 2015 ultimate 2.0. Bought it in Dec 2015. I feel like I am driving on a skating rink coz the car keeps veering from left to right and sometimes feels like I am driving with just 3 1/2 wheel ( you get a limping feeling on the right side). The dealerships have all figured out a way to just push you away by eithe4r saying that there is no problem or they ask you to duplicate it. Can someone please help me. I am in Canada, Toronto and really want some help please.

    do you have to remove the steering wheel to lower the rack

    • @kingadello
      @kingadello 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes. I just replace mine today. I had to remove the steering whee, the fuse box, the switches near the driver's knee (gas, eco, etc.), and of course any connected cables before lowering the rack. Also note that the rack is heavy.. I had to literally bench press it back in place, laying on my back! It took about 2 hours to get the job done.

    I have the same problem with my 2013 Elantra GT (~84k miles on it). I called the nearest dealer to see if there was a recall or if it's covered under warranty. They said no and it would be $350 to fix. Does anyone know if there is a way to see if the dealer is lying about whether it's covered or not? I don't trust this dealer given past experience. I entered my VIN on the NHTSA website, but it came back as "no recalls". I have dropped it off with my local garage guy who has provided great service (better than the dealer) over the years, and they charge much less per labor hour.
