Disconnecting the wiring can be intimidating but not when you realize that all connectors are unique so everything can only be connected back to its original location. Besides, each wire bundle only reaches its respective connection. You saved me $500!

Fantastic, I just took my wife to get her car done because it had the same problem and it cost me $550, my Sonata started doing the same a week ago and I decided to follow your video, I figured worst scenario I would have to take it to the dealer, well, 2 hours later I was done, the part cost me $1.75, Thank you, Thank you, very well documented. My recommendation to anyone doing it, have the tools you need ready, follow the video step by step so you don't get confuse and I would take off the AC vent first which is the last thing on the video but if you do it last you may break it when the steering column drops.

    • @WatchMeNow85

This should be backed by a recall from Hyundai. If you have the service records for your wife's car, I would call your Hyundai USA to file a claim and get your money back 1-800-477-8089. It is covered up until 100,000 miles.

First of all, thank you so much for the vodeo. I got my job done today following your video step by step + taking out the fuse pannel for wider space. I turned on the engine after re-connect all the wires then check to make sure everything (steering, wiper, EPS, signal, headlight, etc..) works perfctly before putting back metal frame and plastic covers in. Shouldn't be any problems as long as all wires hooked up tightly. Happy to save $300+. Thanks!

Thank you for this video! I use my Sonata for business (airport transportation) and do most of my own service work. I built heavy trucks in a factory for 21 years and have reasonable mechanical skills. But I thought for sure I would have to take this in. Just got done with this repair.. thank you for this video. It was very helpful. Couple of my notes. If you don't have power tools then either get a second person for help because while putting everything back together, steering column will be a pain to get it screwed again and while putting the steering column there is a extended part protruding from the column which needs to go into the pocket. To summarise from the video, all you need for this repair is 10mm, 12mm sockets, Phillips screwdriver, T30 bit to remove screws from electric motor and a torque wrench. For this I think it is better to take out the instrument cluster and try to fix rather than dropping the steering column

GREAT instructional video. Thank you so much! I'm over 55 and managed to do this by myself while my husband was away fishing with an old friend. I wrote down all the steps and gathered all the tools together so I could move through without having to stop and check for things. Toughest part getting the steering column back up into position...felt like a contortionist trying to bench-press it back into place and get those top nuts back on! Your video worked for me even though I have a push-button start on my Sonata. Even though Hyundai extended the warranty, my car was beyond the extended warranty mileage of 100,000 (~130K).

Pro-tip: when replacing the steering column, it's helpful to get underneath it on the floorboard to guide the hook back into place and make sure you have a nut handy to secure the steering column. Trying to get it back into place from the side is a little difficult because it's difficult to line everything up.

i, I was able to fix the coupler, im going to try my best to describe it but somehow during the process the steering wheel completed pulled out and disconnected from the rack when i pulled the steering wheel out after "Dropping it" basically female tube (attached to steering wheel) with the grooves inside which goes into the male rod with outer grooves which is connected to the rack with the bolts. When I put the steering wheel on again it completely was off 50+ degrees in alignment. I'll be trying to realign the grooves tomorrow is their a way I can do it without buying expensive parts? I can understand 1-2 degrees but my tie rod alignment is fine. Its from the way the steering wheel was placed in the rack.
***btw not to be confused with aligning the steering wheel clockspring, i never opened that middle portion where the airbag.
      www.hyundaipartsdeal.com/genuine/hyundai-joint-assy-universal~56400-2l000.html
it the right part in the diagram here 56300 which needs to be aligned with the middle part
      **NOT 56410
Any advice is useful on how to get the grooves aligned as close as possible with the tires...its completely off, didnt wanna adjust the tie rods like crazy and dont even the the grooves in the rod allow for that much adjustment as of now (ex. the straight steering wheel has tires pointing halfway to the left)

I finally took the time to go for it yesterday, and everything worked out great. That aggravating clattering noise I used to get when I went over bumps is gone, and steering feels firm. It might have been easier if I’d dropped the steering column, but I wanted to avoid the potential issues others have had with that. I did remove two of the 12mm bolts holding the column and loosened a third. I also removed the fuse box and the instrument cluster to get the access I needed.
It took some work and persistence, but I’m glad I did it this way. It took me an hour and 45 minutes, a little sweat and $1.20 for the part. Thanks to everybody who contributed info and advice on this!

BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN DOING THIS JOB. I followed the exact steps and was able to fix my clunk in steering wheel. However, when dropping my steering wheel it hit my brake switch and broke it. I had to replace my brake switch since my brake lights stayed on the whole time. Other than that, everything went well.

There is an extended warranty (TSB) for this problem with the MDPS steering coupler 10 yrs/
100k miles. I just got my 2013 Sonata fixed for free by the dealer. Also for 2015 - 2017 Sonata the warranty has been extended to 15 yrs /150k miles. The warranty covers original and subsequent owners. Just do a search for Hyundai TSBs.

My 2012 Sonata steering wheel has been making this gosh awful noise for months now. I took it to the dealer and complained about it one day while I was already there for 2 recall issues. They did nothing about the steering wheel. When it got progressively worse, I took it back in and they said that they wouldn't cover it because I was just over my 100,000 miles. But when I took it in the first time and complained about it, I was well under my 100,000. I called Hyundai Corp and they agreed to replacing the coupler and said they would reach out to the dealer but that once they did, they were no longer involved. I took it to the dealership and they refused, but told me I could pay them $300 to fix it. Its a $5.00 part people!! Now the steering wheel feels like its going to fall off and the shaking will knock the fire off of your cigarette. At times I can hardly keep the car on the road. Long story short, my husband and I appreciate this video because now he can fix it for me. This has been the worst car I have ever owned and can promise you, I will NEVER own another one.

I went to dealer for this issue. It use to be my wife's car I got her a new one and kept it because of this issue. Went to dealer they said $300 to fix it I even consider trading it in. It was really bad nasty vibrations clicking metal noise after 60mph and when I hit pot holes. Thanks to this video I fixed it. Everything went away once i replaced that part. I'm no mechanic it took me a while a good 3 to 4 hours but saved lots of cash.

    • @twotoned2774

Same here. I bought the car from a small dealer lot but took it to Hyundai and paid $150 to check the car for any issues before purchasing. They didn't mention this or any other issues with the car. Last week I went over my 100k miles and I just read it would be warranted up to 100k. I will be doing the repair myself as well. I won't buy another Hyundai since we only have one dealer in my city and they are the worse.

This is a great video, it just saved me 3 or 400 dollars, the guy goes into detail and shows most of the process in the video, so thanks, great job. That said, if you are doing this you will want to know that it looks easier than it really is, he must be experienced and familiar with the parts, it looks like he does this often. I consider myself handy, but it still felt like it was too much a couple of times: Some of the connectors do not come out very easily, the video does not show how to take out the last connector, a small one, I had a hard time with it, some of them made me wonder if they were supposed to come out at all, but in the end all did. I broke a couple of the fixing clips which I replaced with ties as best as I could. Also, and I hope you are reading this before doing it yourself, the column is very heavy and hard to put back into place, it was the hardest part of the job, its not on the video either. The whole project is done in awkward positions. So in summary. The video is good and it will tell you almost all you need but it is harder and more time consuming than it seems. If you decide to do it you will be saving good money and in the end know a little more than when you started. The whole thing was worth it the problem is fixed. Almost forgot to mention, by the time I was done the battery was dead, nothing to do with the video, but you may still want to keep that in mind. Thanks again for the video and Good luck!

Great comment, I agree. This job required much more effort than the video portrays. However, I am so grateful to have gotten it done on my own. I didn't have the same issue with the steering column as you did. Sorry that was so difficult and about the fact that your battery died. I read a comment in one of the other videos to make sure that I disconnected the battery.

What is the name of the actual part he's replacing? I need to know where to buy it also.
Mine has the same problem, and the mechanic said it could be anything, scared me to death with scenerios like my airbag deploying at anytime or my steering wheel locking up while turning and causing me to crash. Estimate given with time tearing things apart to research all possible problems- roughly $1500!!!!! Ill order the part and have my mechanic friend fix for me!

The description for the part I bough on Amazon is: APDTY 112837 Steering Column Motor MDPS Clunk Noise Rubber Flex Coupler Repair Fits Select Hyundai Sonata Elantra Santa Fe Azera Veloster Kia Soul Optima Forte Cadenza (TSB 14-ST-002-1; 56330-4Z000). It was the right part for my sonata 2011 and it cost less than 6 dollars. Copy the first number (APDTY 112837) on Amazon, it will find it for you

When I bought the replacement part, the guy at the parts store told me the same thing (to disconnect the battery). He said, with the battery still connected, there's a chance the airbag could deploy. But, how can I turn the steering wheel to undo the screws if the battery is disconnected? I see Dullah Goso hard didn't disconnect the battery.
