    My first powder dropper was same Lee one and then I bought RCBS for about 60 bucks on ebay and the difference is night and day, plastic vs. metal drum. Now my lee dropper is gathering dust, so recommend spend a little more and you'll be much happier. I screwed mine to 1" piece of board that I clamp to the table when I need it. The clamp is to the left out of the way and it's very sturdy and since I can unclam it, I can dump the powder easily since you can't detach hopper on RCBS.

    I love the simplicity In what you do. You refine it to the basics. A 15.00 press, a 20.00 powder measure, using a plastic ammo container for a loading tray. I also look at all the cases to verify they all look the same.
    I do have to wonder how you don’t turn that powder measure over !😂

  • @nospam3409
    @nospam3409 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My sequence on a single stage press is a little different. I load my primed cases into the loading block with the primer up. When I remove them to add powder, I go ahead and set a bullet on it and seat the bullet before picking up the next piece of brass. That prevents me from inadvertently forgetting to charge one of the cases and making a squib load.

    Great video, man. That Hornady manual info is important! My copy of the manual has it correct but there are a bunch of older ones that don't. Luckily I had read about that before I got started with 300blk and knew to double check.
    With all the problems I've had shooting cast bullets, I think I will buy the same mold you're using and give it a try. I will probably pick up the RCBS Small Base resizing die as well, just for the heck of it! The sizing dies I'm using don't give me any chambering issues (if I set them properly) but maybe there's something else going on with resizing that's contributing to my cast bullet problems. Who knows. I'm willing to try anything.
    Thanks again. Great video. I love the long ones!

    Here we are, 2023 and primers went from .3 cents to 10 - 15 cents a primer depending how you get them, local, online. Still tho I recover my lead, brass and cast my own missles, so with powder and primer it comes out to about 20 -23 cents a round. $200-230 a thousand still better than $900 and up per thousand rounds of subsonic 300 blk. First thousand rounds of ammo about if not covers all your reloading equipment. Shoot 300 a guy or gal ought to consider reloading if your not already.

    Elvis, Great Video dude. It awesome when someone research's and make it available to other shooter that there is a potential for something that is unsafe. also. I like your "Stock up" advice, That is something that I've been doing since the mid 80's, It will keep you shooting when things dry up, any powder that works the best is a stock up idem also Primers when they are on sale. You and Many others out there are discovering the freedom of casting also, That is another way of "Keep shooting", However you save money at the same time. also expanding your knowledge of reloading. Good shooting Buddy! Dave.

      Yes.. Once you start going down the road of reloading It's enjoyable and rewarding, Most people out there at the range just want to shoot because it' a pastime for them and that about it, Not You and I,, We have discovered the other side of the house, The freedom it gives to us and the experience we profit from in knowledge. I don't know everything, However I have my theory's, opinions and thoughts on the Matter that I'm addressing, But I always announce that "This is my though through experience and what I Believe" Call it a disclaimers, However I don't know everything there is to know. I like to use no powder coat and make sure the lead is hard enough that I can load without a expanding die. If the speed is not crazy it won’t lead the barrel a sub won’t lead it up so if I can avoid powder coat I do. I like minimum work ! That’s not a bad thing. I don’t even clean brass or prep primer pockets ever! I’ve shot steel case convert case with big nasty ugly flash holes with no change in accuracy so I don’t bother. I get plenty of accuracy

    Enjoy your videos and have learned quite a bit. You stopped my leading problems years ago with PC bullets. Anyway first time loading 300 blackout. I measured my chamber using the 155 gn Lee cast and I can't load to your COAL. I had to adjust to 1.965" for my rifle to chamber a round. This extends the base of the bullet into the powder chamber about .0100" below the neck. Is this safe? Thanks and keep the info coming.

    Good vid! The "Loadbooks are not infallible. They have one for "25 & 32 acp" and the "32 Mag", but not any for the 32 S&W or the 32 S&W Long. I recently bought a Lyman mold the 358480 a 133gr double cavity. It isn't listed in the 38 special loadbook, but is listed in the 357 Mag one.The 358313 170gr isn't listed either in the 38 special book, but a 168gr bullet is. Go figure. That was me trying to get that info to Johnny's Reloading Bench . Because I thought I heard him when he was making/forming his brass that he trimmed to 1.360 ..... Hornady had it bad wrong in the beginning. and that data is still floting around! Good info! thanks for pointing that out! My subscribers are at LEAST half the show! I have a the lyman case gauge and it seems to be spot on for my chamber. .. Oh and the difference between the Lee and RCBS resizing is it goes both ways. I think if u turn ur Lee die in a little more u might be fine with the 335 diameter! I don't think Lee would keep making incorrect dies! And if you crimp it more u could be fine as well.

  • @williamhunt5325
    @williamhunt5325 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good stuff Elvis! Just bought the RCBS SB from midway. However, a taper crimp die comes in the set. Does this mean I don't need my Lee factory crimp die??

  • @ghostshadow9046
    @ghostshadow9046 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    if case is too long can get fire out of battery the bolt will not lock.
    RCBS Small Base, I always full length resize all my brass that gets fired in semi auto, lever and pump action firearms to insure proper function.
    I've had factory new ammo that failed on a case gauge.
    I'm going to try sierra 150 grain FP 30-30 bullets in my 300 AAC blackout should have excellent expansion, Manually pulling charging handle back and letting it go it feeds fine, just need to see how it functions live fire, I paid $8.99 per 100 for the sierra bullets many years ago, bought 5 boxes.
    powder only goes into my uniflow when I load and when I leave the loading bench powder is returned to the can.
    With the powder throws need to get powder settled so it throws consistent charges, I dump the first 10 charges back into the top then every other charge goes on the scale for the next 20 cases then after that every 5th charge goes on the scale, if a charge is off the previous 4 charges get dumped and redone after measure is adjusted to throw correct charge, after 100 I measure every 10th charge
    I've just been using a taper crimp, haven't had an issue with bullets getting shoved back in the case, if you try to crimp too heavy I've seen the shoulder get shoved back

    • @elvisammo
      @elvisammo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey Ghost Shadow... The 300 blk seems to have some issues relating to this subject. More so than other calibers... some will agree. I have seen the chamber problems cause a slam fire dropping the bolt? And Im glad you brought up factory ammo not fitting a case gauge! Sure enough! I have also heard of factory brass that is sold by name brands not chamber! I agree that some of the problems are from bad builds.. But the info I share, I try not to include those! : ) I have tried the flat points.. really bad for feeding, Just watch the ogive distance to the lands when seating... Thanks for sharing

    Hello I'm new at this and I have watched your video I'm using Hornandy 300 AAC 3 set dies and I'm looking at the reload data books and they all set Case AOL of 1368 and was having problems accomplishing this with the lee case gauge and shell holder so I decided to pull some cartridges out and pull the bullets out and noticed that the over all case length is 1358 on the following Ammo
    Winchester
    Hornandy
    American eagle
    But in my reload data books it says 1368. So which is correct and why?

    Great video, just a few comments. I still think its very important to do 10 powder drop and check the average. Reason why, our temperature and humidity change daily which could change your drops. I am subscriber, I would still stress the importance of having gauges for all of your calibers. When dealing with stack tolerances, its critical to check the head space with a gauge. I have been reloading for several years now, I have seen to many times that someone has been hurt because no one double checked the head space. All reloaders should be using gauges. You do outstanding job on your video's and you stress the important of all the steps. I kinda got mix message about using gauges on this video. Please don't take my comments negative, just wanted to stress a few point. Good Shooting My Friend. Harleychromeman

    • @elvisammo
      @elvisammo  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hey Harleychromeman. ... sorry I somehow missed your comment. . thanks for the compliment! the powder drop I had been using before the video. . checked and double checked. .. never can be to carefully though. .. and I hope I didn't send mixed messages on the case gauge. . sometimes doing a video it's hard to make people understand what you're thinking if the words don't come out of your mouth! ; ) I was trying to make the point to measure your brass ... it allows you to understand mixed brass to know what minimums and maximums are.. I like to be involved in the construction. It's how my brain works. .. but definitely have a gauge that works. . the reason I say that is because I've heard of a problem with the wilson gauge passing rounds that wouldn't chamber. .. I use the lyman case gauge and it seems to be most in line with my chamber in my 300 blackout. thanks for watching and commenting. ... enjoy thanks rest of your weekend! !!.

    • @elvisammo
      @elvisammo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hey Steven fukuda... There really isn't a minimum, Just so you realize the deeper the bullet the less room in the case, and pressure considerations to be made. The next is function. The rifle must feed the bullet. A smooth transition from mag over the feed ramp into the chamber.

    We did bright yellow from westcoast. it worked out great. Two coats. First try bombed. our oven would only go to 350.Will use it for target practice later. Did 124 g .355 and 55g 224 about 200 of each. Here is the skinny of it. oven to 400 powder in bowl shake about 10 sec. cook 20 min.. when 1 batch is done you can be back cooking in less than a min.We did 4 cookings in about 1 and 1/2 hour. mic at 356 and 225 when done.. we have a lot left from the 8 oz bottle. We have 11 more colors left, one is gloss clear Might try to second coat dont know yet. I do not think westcoast has got the message yet that there is a whole lot of reloaders out here that powder coat. They make a great product.

I suspect you'll get 75- 100 fps more. you can tell me if I'm right! one of the things I'd like to know is, What colors go on easy and what colors are more difficult? I'm making you guys pay for my videos by answering questions! !!! ; ) Thanks for participating! you guys have good info as well .... best of luck To ya and thanks for watching!

    How much of IMR4198 do you use for Lee 155gr cast? Got ton of this powder, none of my reloading sources mention it for any blackout loads (Hornady, Nosler, Sierra). I just did a quick check on IMR load data online and it shows it but for bullets starting 180 grain and up. I wonder it if will be suitable for 150gr FMJ pulls I bought.

    Any Idea about Hornady resizing die does it bring case down to correct size like RCBS small base die? I have been rejecting several cases using that die.

      hey Joseph Cirigliano.... Im not for sure about that one. the correct dies for auto rifles are short base dies... I had one person tell me that they shaved .005 off a lee sizing die and it worked great. 300 aac is finicky about chambering . in my experience the rcbs sb die and lee crimp die is the bomb! those 2 I rely on!!!!! thanks for watching.. maybe someone that uses the hornaday die will see your comment!!!!

    Im getting into 300blk reloading. How did you figure out your OAL on that load? Im looking at coated subs, but I don't think they are in any book. Where do you think I should get my OAL? Thanks)

      Hey Carlos G.. Yeah good question. As you know there is no load data for some things. I usually measure my chamber using a marked bullet and back off about 40 thousands or so for an AR .. So this way I establish an OAL max. then I work out the OAL based on function. cycling reliably! A case gauge is helpful to check the ammo in. An Oal that I use for the 230 gr lee bullet is 2.230 Always check to make sure it chambers easily! This OAL seems to work for others as well. Just double check.. Hope this helps

      hey Steve. .. I don't know off the top of my head but it's the lee universal expanding die.. you should be able to find it with that info.. sorry. . just trying to give ya an answer without looking at it! ; )

    If memory serves, the mold you used to make those bullets was .312 diameter. Did you encounter any problems sizing them down to .308?

    • @elvisammo
      @elvisammo  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey Michael Kingswood... no they sized with no problem at all.. great bullet design! thnks for watching!
