"Soft Lead" Powder coated (300 BLK) Ballistic Mushroom? Gel TEST=)

  • Super Sonic MUSHROOM..! Cast Lead bullets, Ballistic Gel Test. bhn. 10.1 Lead hardness has a lot to do with expansion in super sonic bullets! But not so much in sub sonic bullets! Soft powder coated cast lead bullets seem to fire and function fine. But more testing is needed (more rounds down range) to be conclusive about leading issues. I did seem to have a tiny bit of lead streaking in the 9mm but not the 45 or the 300 black out.. bullet fit is one thing I can work on...(9mm)

    I have been testing powder coated lead hollow points in handguns from a NOE mold for the past 2 years. 45 ACP at factory speeds, use pure (Brn 5) lead, mushrooms perfectly, no leading. At plus P use 7 brn in the 45 ACP gives a perfect mushroom. 9mm pure is too soft, go 7 Brn. Elvis is testing 10 BRN, A hollow point at 10 BTN opens slightly, looks like a wad cutter on a ,45 ACP. I have tested Glock 21, 41, and a few Colts.

    Good stuff E. Waste of time hollow point when you have a 30 cal. bullet expanding to 5/8 = .625. I'm thinking it would make hell of a hog bomb in my sks. Think I'm going to play around a little with this. I think there is a 165 grain .312 mold out there. Probably would knock a deer into the next area code too. Best part is cheap, cheap hunting ammo. Hi Elvis- I'm just going through your library of videos as I'm a new subscriber. Just wanted you to know, since you mentioned possible leading in the 9mm Glock barrel, that historically, leading in Glock's polygonel (so?) rifled barrels is a documented problem with cast bullets. In fact, that's the main reason powder coating has become as popular as it has over the last few years, for use in Glock pistols. PC has gone a long way in mitigating the problem, but can't eliminate entirely, especially with softer lead. Since I haven't watched all of your videos, YET, I don't know if you were aware or other viewers made mention of that in the comments on any of your other videos. Anyway, loving the content. Glad I found you. Thanks.

    ALL RIGHT!!! Soft lead testing. 😂 Ok, subsonic, no significant deformation. Supersonic, mushroom. Yes, hollow points need to be looked at, but I think Keith style bullets will show more effect over a greater distance. I think hollow points in soft lead will cause markedly decreased penetration. Shall we see?????☺

    Hey Elvis - it seems like the powder coating really mitigates leading concerns, even when shooting moderate/higher velocity rounds through the rifle. Way to go Elvis. Good catch on that missle. I really doubt that hollow pointing it will make much difference. I've read were some people have put tin foil between the mold halfs but leave the tip complete to try getting some expansion. Maybe hollow point one of those. Also a straight bit doesn't work that well. I've seen were star bits might work ok. It was neat to see the 160 super. The 9mm & 45 worked about like I expected.

  • @charlesirby9222
    @charlesirby9222 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    You'll have to use what we call a starter bit, they come in a couple sizes one 1/4" and the other 3/16'ths (?) but they have a thick shaft and won't bend. Harbor Freight has them cheap. I think you may do better with a wide meplat instead on that missile.
    Can't wait to see the next test as I haven't used the gel, only test in water columns with HP's of soft lead at low velocities to make a round you can use in house against a perp that won't pass through and wound the innocent. Love your work Elvis!

    Besides low velocity, bullet design could have a lot with the 230 grain not expanding. Do you know of any molds that have a flat point instead of a spire point? I think a larger meplat would help greatly. A Keith style SW would be awesome.

    Elvis, so what your essentially saying is the powder coat is improving the bullets ability to handle increased pressures with the pure soft lead. I find your videos extremely easy to follow and educational so it's taking me a while to get through them all.

    • @elvisammo
      @elvisammo  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey James Ford... I think one of the differences Is It gives us a little more forgiveness without the leading. But the bullet still needs a certain hardness to withstand the rpms. and hold together on the way to the target. Good stuff!

    If you want to make easy expanding bullets for the lee mold, stick a strip of aluminum foil in between the mold halfs and cast. Depending on the depth of the aluminum you can adjust the expansion depending on your heat treating of the lead. Very rapid and radical expansion with two aggressive petals. Expansion is erratic, but it is always pretty large.

    Great video again. Those cavitation channels are meaningless unless the bullet is traveling at least 2000fps. Below that speed those channels just close back up due to the elastic nature of flesh. Above that speed the hydrostatic shock is great enough to cause tearing and permanent channels. You can see the extensive data on this from the FBI and numerous pathologists. It's common to see online gel tests where the content maker mistakes those cavitation channels for what would actually happen in flesh, this simply isn't true unless we are talking above 2000fps and closer to 2200fps. This means no pistol will produce expanded wound channels and pistol wound analysis depends solely on bullet expanded diameter, or more simply the size of the hole the bullet makes.
    Also, penetration in gel is always a very best case as there is no bone, ligament or tendon in gel. You will always get less penetration real world.
    Love the channel and never miss an upload. Keep up the good work.

    • @elvisammo
      @elvisammo  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hey there cgirl111...it's great to see your still out there! everything you say about the fbi stats is true. yes! I haven't compared conventional ammo of any kind. to the cast lead. someone needs to tell my ballistic gel that the oblong hole 2.25 x 7inch is not permanent !! : ) but in real life, that could be another matter. maybe use a slab of pork ribs!..that is however the most damage I have ever seen from a sub sonic round by far!! real life penetration is the question?... that one seems to be a wild cat!!! the super sonic 160 gr. @ 1650 fps even at that speed was very impressive... now this one on the other hand even though it had a star like .75 inch permanent channel... I personally think would be "more" impressive in real life.. ( damage, penetration) because of the amount of energy... speed is a factor that can get ya in trouble. when maximum damage is preferred ... a lot of hunters know this... but there is a sweet spot. And every load has one. And there are other factors like distance where speed becomes more important. Don't Know if you seen the outcome of the video showing the 223 mushroom? Glad to talk to ya again! God bless

    Have you ever done a long term study on the effects of aging on the hardness of the lead? It's my understanding that it will harden as it ages, but I wonder what the time is that it will reach peak hardness and not get significantly harder.

    • @elvisammo
      @elvisammo  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey Keith Hamilton... It is my understanding that they get harder for a short period of time and may even soften just a little over a longer period of time. i have tested them over a short period .. (30 days or so ) and noticed a small increase. as far as im aware they remain in the ballpark though.

    BHN X 100 = V needed for expansion
    Somewhere over a decade ago I picked up a formula for BHN and velocity to achieve reliable expansion. A flat nose style bullet is needed for this to be reliable. It has always worked.
    Simply BHN X 100 = V needed for expansion. You just add two zeros to your BHN number. Thus a bhn of #10.1 as used in this video would needs a V above 1,000 fps with a flat nose bullet. Most sub sonic is loaded at 1,050 fps. Which would be marginal. Which demonstrates why the RN 230 grain bullet nor the pistol bullets did not expand.
    I run flat nose hard cast in all the calibers tested in this video. I keep my 9mm cast at under 26,000 psi which puts them at around 1050 fps for a 125 grain flat RN cowboy revolver style bullet. Or the 122 gr TCFP. The 45 acp is a far better cast bullet shooter. 230 grain FN cast at 850 fps. No reduction in power. In 45 and 9mm the flat noses reduce penetration. The 124 FN bullet the USAF developed for the 9mm way back when it was adopted. Could not pass the NATO penetration test through all that hard pine board. IIRC that’s 16” setup in three stack with air gaps. So while a FN blew twice the diameter hole in clay as the RN. Our military used the RN to meet NATO penetration. In 300 ACC I like the 245 gr powder coated flat nose at BHN #17 that I purchase. Since I don’t care to setup for painting bullets. I shoot it from a 1-6” twist barrel. Never tried it but I don’t think the fast twist would like soft bullets. It does stabilize the long bullets well.
    A FACTOID. My 9mm flat nose will decapitate ,with a neck shot, a chicken that refuses to be caught. Then they flop around and bleed out nice. :-)

    I kind of want to experiment with black powder loaded cast lead .300 blk in my Remington 700 aac. Making your own black powder and projectiles would leave you at the cost of primers, and the time to clean obviously but everyone should clean their weapons after shooting anyhow.

    I am shooting my AEA .457 challenger air rifle at 700fpe, 340g x 1000+ fps and I am just now finding out that dropping my bullets in water hardens the lead. I want softer lead anyways cause having more power then a Glock ACP .45 @ 500fpe I would like to use the extra power to mushroom out the bullet and do more damage to the Deer.

    Great videos- I’m glad you tested the 9mm with BHN of 10.1 and powder coated because I’m reloading some of the ww and stick on ww now and was curious about leading, etc.
    How about only using stick on ww for a 38 SPL (148 grain full wad cutter, minimal charge) do for only paper target shooting? Some of my BHN results for stick on ww are 7.8 to 8.2. Would this cause leading in the barrel even if I powder coat? Thoughts/comments?
    Thanks,

    In the 300 BO, I'm thinking if you found a happy medium between the 230 gr and 160 gr projectiles (say 200 gr) you would have an effective defense round utilizing the soft lead without having to hollow point them.
    What this should do is (a) slow up the supersonics a bit thus lessening leading concerns and (b) also decreasing the penetration.
    Good video! I have been wanting to try the powder-coating myself with my cast lead "boolits", hopefully you also have a video for that. (I have reloaded commercial powder-coated bullets.)

    I think ya gotta go all the way and try pure lead in the pistol rounds. Right? I mean I shoot pure lead 1oz slugs at 1350 feet per second. 9mm and 45 are much slower and with the PC it should work fine. Also, how fast are you pushing the lead PC pistol rounds? I load 9mm up to 4.2 grains of titegroup with no issues. Yet to chrono them but function, pressure, ext is no issue. I would be willing to bet you could fire those 125 grainers with pure lead PC'd and see some good results.

    I have a question... a couple maybe. SO I am considering getting into reloading, specifically cast bullets. But unlike you I really just want to find a load that works and load a bunch of it. I like this 160 gn 300blackout, and how it mushrooms, I would want to load that for hunting. But I was thinking about something you said in this video and its something that a lot of people say, but it doesnt make sense to me. I was hoping you could explain.
    The idea is that a bullet that passes through an animal/assailant is just wasting energy, right? So then the goal is make a bullet that penetrates less so that all of the energy is dumped into the flesh, right? but this doesnt make any sense, isn't it true that the amount of kinetic energy needed to tear through flesh/gel doesnt change. SO if you have 2 bullets that have the same kinetic energy on impact, and one penetrates less than the other then you could say that that bullet is tranferring more energy. BUT, if you reduce the velocity of a bullet to make sure it doesnt penetrate as far, you are essentially increasing the percentage of its energy that is tranferred, but the grand total amount of kinetic energy transferred is less. By this logic, I would expect that velocity is irrelevant, except that higher velocities will increase deceleration and thus increase the chances of expansion... right? SO then doesnt it make sense to always load a road at its highest velocity to encourage expansion which would then transfer the most kinetic energy and do the most damage?
    The only time I can see the benefit of reducing velocity is to reach subsonic speeds for suppression. And on that front, do you know of any 300 Blackout hollow points that can be loaded subsonic that will expand at those velocities?

    I Enjoy the videos. One question on the soft lead. 20:1 seems about the same Brinel hardness, I was thinking that in a 312-155gr powder coated and sized to .309 would work in my 300blk pistol for about 50yds. Would lead that soft feed well in my are pistol length? What's your opinion? Thank you and keep up the great work.

    • @elvisammo
      @elvisammo  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Robert Wicox.. I believe that gives you about 10 BHN. You shoud get great expansion at around 1500 fps. running it to 16 or 1700 fps shoud be fine... I think it'll work, The only thing I would watch for is bullet deformation when it hits the ramps. Keep an eye on that, Other wise I would use it!

      elvis ammo Just put off spending money on something else and save the few extra bucks for a while. Then go on line and pick one out, there isn't anything like having a big bore revolver on hand. I started casting originally because of buying a .44 Magnum back in the 80's. even then .44 mag was a rich mans gun to go buy Bullets and ammo for. I was never interested in the Desert Eagle, you just couldn't go cast bullets for it because of the gas system. I guess that some people out there are using powder coated bullets with great success now. However If I were you I would just stick to a revolver that way you can cast bullets in any bullet weight without effecting the operation of the pistol. Dave.
