    Shooting a ak with that same bullet I was getting 1760 in a 15” barrel .308 rifling usa barrel . I made the charge using primer indicators and cycling ability. Later when I got a chronometer I tested my speed so i figured that was the “natural FPS “ that sort of bullet should be. But in a ak it had more case capacity but I was using powders not perfect for the ak Maby w748 or something. Covid caused a lot of issues for us and I sometimes resorted to duplex loads . Maby a 5grain spot to get the pressure up on a slower powder seemed to do the trick as needed. I used this reliably for a lot of rds.

    Hey Elvis , My Lee measure is right on the money with IMR 4198 and most of those powders like that . 18 bucks , 10 years ago, I think i got my moneys worth out of it , and still going .

    Hey, Elvis. I have the same powder measure as you after you recommended it in one of your videos, and when I first got it I was running 700x for 9mm and getting 100% consistent results. It was my first batch of bullets I ever handloaded so I checked every shell for about the first 100 until I got comfortable enough to only measure every tenth, then every 20th etc. I began getting some inconsistencies after about 500 rounds total use and my slide wouldn't lock back at the end of each magazine. After I bought my 223 dies and some 4064 powder (which is cylinder shaped) I felt like I should get the problem solved before loading my first rifle cartridges because they were using a great deal more powder than my 9mm's and I didn't want any pressure issues to hurt my face or my new rifle.
    I can't remember if I emailed Lee or got this advice from their website, but I was getting +1/-1 tolerances on my powder charges so if I was going for 16.5g, sometimes I would get 16.4, 16.5, as well as 16.7. Lee suggested that I disassemble the powder charge and clean and dry it. Then reassemble and use powder graphite such as a locksmith would use. It is easy to find at any hardware store. They also said to throw the handle gently without clicking the handle at the top or bottom of the stroke. Since I rebuilt my powder charge (same model as yours) and use a gentle techique versus snapping the handle, I am getting consistent powder charges again, with the occasional -.1 grain throw. Once it begins to throw inconsistently again I will rebuild and use the graphite as a lubricant. It's been working so well I am considering buying one for each powder I use since they are only $24 and then they will stay adjusted for each caliber. They are great powder throws and can be as consistent as any expensive model, they just need this routine maintenance to perform at their best.

    • @elvisammo
      @elvisammo  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey Chris Cogsdil.... yea Thats some good info on the the powder measure! Lee uses a unique system in the way the powder charge is separated in the drop tube... Im a fan. I also have found that clicking the handle wasn't needed. The system of rubber cutters verses metal makes this operate smooth and rival some the the most expensive measures..... Don't tell no one I said that! : ) ..The graphite that lee says to use is a good call, Just remember that modern powder already has graphite in it. I would imagine that once the measures are coated good that it might just stay good... unless you clean out the powder measure.. when I change powder Im careful not to wipe the dust out (graphite)..can't get enough of these things!

    Just a little tip here in case you've not heard it before...when using the powder throw, any brand of rotor style like yours, I lightly 'double tap' the handle on the throw on the fill cycle to settle the powder in the metering hole, then weigh and adjust until you are satisfied with the throw weight.
    I'm in the habit of lightly double tapping on the delivery also to insure that there is no bridging causing powder to hang in the metering hole or in the tip/funnel area above the cartridge. You still have a variation just because of the physics but the variation usually drops to .1'th and you'll find a greater percentage drop right on the money.
    Another tip is to lightly tap the hopper with a screw driver handle when you initially fill it to settle the powder in the hopper and keep a constant pressure and powder density on the metering hole of the delivery rotor.
    I like your lead base you made making the throw easy to position anywhere on the bench.
    Just for giggles, just to see the difference that 1/2 grain will make in group size...I'd load 10 rounds .3-.5 grains light of what you have there and set your bench up at 50 yards with sandbags and carefully shoot and compare the group sizes. You'll still get a high velocity near what your have now but you will be finding out if you are shooting off a 'barrel node' or not...harmonics of the barrel.

    • @elvisammo
      @elvisammo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hey Charles Irby I'm a bit of a renegade! I've been kinda testing and fooling around with the idea that my average remains the same... I know goes against the Cardinal rule! !! but honestly. .. the only difference I've seen so for is only with the extreme levels of powder in these lee cheapo's. they use rubber blades that divide the powder throw instead of cutting it off . that makes for very smooth consistent throws. I really like the forward thinking the engineering of the Lee peeps here! But your logic is completely understood trusted! ! The lead bases I'm putting on the powder measures are way cool.... move em anywhere and put em away. .... not just a good idea, but practical! I did play with some grain change in testing, I had a little wiggle room for consistency between 16.5 and 17.0 .. do you mean sand bag under the barrel or free float hand guard?

    • @charlesirby9222
      @charlesirby9222 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, float the barrel...I was referring to sand bagging on the shooting table to help you get sighted as best as possible. When I use my pod legs on the front of my 700 I'll set them in a 2" deep small cardboard box of sand/dirt to cushion as if I were shooting off prone on the ground. The hard table top introduces harmonics that you don't see in the field. You have it covered...I think I'm hovering too much here!

    • @elvisammo
      @elvisammo  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey Charles Irby... I was using my back pack as a rest, I just wasn't sure if you was suggesting to rest on the barrel instead of the guard ....But I never turn down any good suggestions!!! : ) now i've got a big foot to track......

    I really like how you are putting to use The application of your powder coated bullets in the .300 BLK for hunting Hogs. I also believe that getting a small low power scope for you rifle will enhance your accuracy. One thing I have to embrace is my eyesight isn't what is used o be Back in the days of shooting bullseye, I have deflection problems now with my ability to square up the sights, It's something I have discovered recently since I started You Tube and that's the way it is. Don't fret about the accuracy you're getting, It's average for just using a red dot sighting device. Good work so far Elvis! Keep it up. Dave. God Bless dude!!

      hey Thorsaxe777. .. yea youtube will point out any problems we're having. .. I too am just finding out I've been in denial about my vision! !!! yikes. .. but that aside, it's hard to test an accuracy load without finding the zero! I like where I'm shooting just fine. .. I'm in the zone! I need to be able to see my x .... eventually I hope to lend a little more credibility to cast lead rifle loads with a hog hunt! thanks again! !!!

    I use a cheap centerpoint adventure class 4-16x40 scope for accuracy testing. I have some of those 155 gr lee bullets made, but I haven't tested any yet. The one I have tested a lot is the 130 grain lyman 311410 plain base bullet. Last weekend I got 0.40 inch groups at 50 yds with 17.3 grains of imr 4227 which gives me close to 2000 fps. What's interesting is that 17.2 and 17.4 grains is over 1 inches so my best load has to be exactly 17.3. My favorite loads are ones that don't have to be as exact so I think I need to try some different powders to see if I can find something that does just as good, but doesn't have to be as exact. This weekend I'm using lake city brass instead of federal brass so I can see if 17.3 will still be the best group or if it'll change because the case capacity is slightly less with military brass. Aside from matching brass I also separate bullet by weight. This weekend all mine are 132.2 grains.

    • @elvisammo
      @elvisammo  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the great info Prepare2Survive.....i've been kinda checking these scopes out a bit... It's been a long time coming!! this powder charge seems to give me good accuracy between 16.6 and 17.0 grains .... the wiggle room is what I like with the win 748 for the 223.... That was awesome to look at.... "the link you sent" .....I use the Lee expander.. I've never had any problems with... I might even like my home made job the very best... Hope you had some good shooting this weekend!!

Got a question.... as a reloader since 1971 I just made my first 300AAC this week, Jan 1st 2021... got some 225 gr factory bullets, IMR4227, and a few other powders.... I am OK with compressed loads ever since I started 50 years ago..... But this 300AAC load is Really Compressed !!! is that "normal" ? Loading by the book, Sierra, Norma, Hornady, etc... I mean seating the bullet was even marking up the bullet.... Thanks...

    Elvis, thanks for all the great info you have given the community. I am new to casting bullets and been doing a lot of research, I'm sorry if I missed the answer to my question in the video. I have purchased this mold and am about to cast my first bullets. From research I understand that I should cast the bullets, power coat the bullets, then resize the bullets to .309. If I do this wouldn't it strip off a lot of powder coating since the bullet started off as .312? Is this the proper procedure? Am I way off? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I am building my AR 300Blk but I dont know which length gas system to use. Hey Elvis,, Just because you are frugal doesn't mean you are cheap. Get in the Car and go down to Walmart and pick up one of those Inexpensive centerpoint scopes, You can get one for about $50 Just for testing. Later on you can get a Burris or Leopold to finish off your rifle to a lean mean Hunting machine, However for now You just want something to center up your shots to 100 yards. Plus you can put it on another rifle when you upgrade. It will be good enough and nobody cares what brand of scope you are using if it does the job. Thorsaxe777

    • @DaveSmith-cp5kj
      @DaveSmith-cp5kj 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only problem with center point scopes is that it only has four hash marks on the reticle and no tactile knobs. UTG scopes are made in the USA and are nearly at the same price but with a full USMC mil dot or Rangefinder reticle, and tactile and slippable turrets.
      Or alternatively for 40 dollars you can get a chinese scope from ebay or amazon that is a pretty close clone of the UTG but with more creep on the turret adjustments. (always back click on turrets anyways) UTG is the best IMO. It is good enough on my 50 caliber.

    Hey Elvis. I just ordered that same mold. what is the final load data you came up with?

      T Brn i have had trouble feeding these out of gi mags with magpul followers. Gen 2 and 3 p mags. Hex mags worked best for me for a while with some bobbles. I seated to the crimp groove to help. I then got a lancer l5 and it has had no trouble but you can tell it still isn't ideal when loading it. I now have a 300 blackout specific pmag and it is great. It appears i can start seating at the lube groove but i dont have a load worked up for that yet. I will be buying a few more of the new 300 blackout mags when i catch them on sale.

    I know old reply but it sea like the blue powder coating holds up better on impact. Is that your experience?
    Have you used this coating in glock oem barrel?

    • @elvisammo
      @elvisammo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hey Silver Back...Mixed results really, When it comes to what powder holds up well. But Eastwood does hold up well! They all seem to do the job! The ford light blue is one of the easiest to apply for sure....
      Yes I have shot thousands of powder coated bullets through my oem Glock barrel!

      elvis ammo I was hoping to here that about the Eastwood powder and glock barrels. I really don't want to spend for.new barrel now. Your 300 black out and 223 gel testing seem to show better results with the Eastwood blue vs red powder coatings. It may be just me but it seems the blue bullets hold together better.

      Silver Back ...It's a great choice. ... And I don't want to spend money on a barrel I don't need either! ; )

    NOE now make an Hollow point mold that drops hollow point bullets weighing about 168 grains. NOE TLC310-180-RF 30 Cal. HP Mold One "Brass block" variation of this mold is 4 cavities , 2 with gas check , two flat base in each cast. Hollow point pins are removable for flat nose if you prefer. video link here th-cam.com/video/vip8FchmSc0/w-d-xo.html

    i have a question you have inspired me to cast my own bullets but i noticed when i seat the bullet in my 308 case the powder coating comes off so the neck is scraping it off have you had this issue sir ?

    • @MrSteelPeddler
      @MrSteelPeddler 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You might need to pick up a universal expander die to flare the case mouth just a bit so it doesn't shave off lead or powdercoat when you seat the bullet.
      I also recommend crimping as a separate step from seating if you're not already doing that.

    Hey Elvis if u powder coat the cast bullets do u still need to add a has check cap?

    • @elvisammo

    • @hectorgonzalez7416
      @hectorgonzalez7416 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      elvis ammo so what's the main reason for those caps, so just powder coat my cast bullets and I should be fine ?

    • @elvisammo
      @elvisammo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hey hector... Gas checks are used for cast lead Lubed bullets, It is designed to sweep the leading behind the bullet, and protect the rear of the bullet in the process.. some people still insist it's better with them for rifle loads,, My own testing dont back that up. So I use the money I save more coffee!! and gun powder!

    • @elvisammo
      @elvisammo  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey hector ... powder coated bullets change some things with cast lead... use to gas checks was common on any high velocity loads...glad to hear you wanna make your own!!!

    Hey Elvis was this a 155 Grain bullet or a 160 grain I ask because I'm trying my hand at supersonics and I'd love to stay around 150-160Grain. I saw another video but that was for a Lee ctl-312-160-2r which I have been looking at. Is this one different? I'd love to known what molds you use for 300 BLK supersonic

    • @elvisammo
      @elvisammo  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey NYC Reloader.. yeah the 155 is my favorite of the two!

    • @nycreloader
      @nycreloader 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      elvis ammo that 10 grains makes a big difference from the 160gr mold (which is really 165 or more).. to me it's almost like the sweet spot .30 cal at 155 grain packs a nice punch. I've dropped some big bucks with it as well as decent size wild boar. One shot one kill and dropped right to the ground. Not saying that subs are not great as I've been shooting them for a while but soft lead powder coated .30 cal at 155 grain supersonic kills them with a nice fat mushroom upon impact. Man does it drop them good. I honestly may try for a little bit larger game with well thought out shot placement of course.

      @elvisammo  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey qchemp420.... I've done quit a bit of testing in the past with gas checks that cost as much as a primer in the past... and I get no difference! only if you're lubing and not powder coating. .. However I have some that I will include in a ballistic test. and maybe I can do a side by side target test as well. .. thanks for watching! !!!!

    • @qchemp420
      @qchemp420 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some casters are machining away part of the mold to remove the gas check base because powder coating has replaced the need for the gas check. Keep doing all the testing, so I don't have too. Thanks.

    Hey man- I got some info for you using the same bullet (Microband 7.62 from lee.) I found I get much better accuracy milling off the Gascheck area and shooting them as flat base bullets. Give a couple a try with a velocity of about 2000fps. I've had some good results with it. Havent made a video yet for you but its coming. I have a new alloy addition to show you coming soon too. But I shot the PC 165grain (like you said mine came out heavier too) to 2700 (with no accuracy) but had no leading! Man I was impressed. (This is out of the 308.) Can't wait to show you the results: ) I am currently trying loads up to a load with an equivalent of 2206H from ADI with 33 grains. www.adi-powders.com.au/handloaders/equivalents.asp is the link for powder equivalents- 2206H and 2206 are virtually the same so any of those powders should work well with 33grains.

      @elvisammo  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey Eadc Components. .. so that milled bullet worked out! awesome, Yea no leading! no kidding! : ) it is impressive. ... The ADI brand in ammo is good priced here! . As far as sizing goes. .. I almost always powder coat and then size. .. but I have experimented with different combinations. .. that awesome. .. I got a cast lead hollow point vid coming. ... can't wait to see your next video! !!!
