  • Hi again! Here is the 2 month update on my recovery from ACL and meniscus surgery! For anyone new to my journey, I had a quad tendon autograft for ACL reconstruction and a repair of a radial tear on the posterior horn of the lateral meniscus. In this video I give you the update from my latest doctor's appointment as well as show you some exercises/water therapy I've been trying to help my range of motion and strength. For anyone else going through this--don't give up hope! Little progress is better than no progress :) Any questions you have, feel free to comment below and don't forget to subscribe to follow along the rest of the recovery!

    Finally someone that is articulate enough to explain their journey and give some very good advice.
    I stumbled across one of your videos and just kept watching looking for nuggets of information.
    Seems like I never could find where you mentioned how you actually injured yourself.
    Thank you for taking time to pass along information as well as trial and error mistakes.
    Also, it doesn’t hurt that you’re a very attractive woman.

      Thanks for your kind words! I talk about the injury in the very first ACL video called "I tore my ACL (and meniscus...and MCL)" but long story short, I was playing soccer and was pushed off balance/hyperextended my knee.

    Thank you Meg! I had a patellar tendon graft for my torn ACL and also a meniscus repair about 7 weeks ago. I went to an urgent care after a rock climbing accident and they had me in an immobilizer for the 2 months before my surgery and non weight bearing, so I had really poor movement going in to surgery. Currently I only have about 50 degrees of flexion on a good day. I changed physical therapists about a week ago, and the new one has me on a more aggressive plan to work on the bending. I had a hard time finding anyone who struggled with the flexion, so thank you so much for posting about your journey. I think I just need to keep plugging away and bending as often as I can. You’ve given me hope for the future!

    I have had 5 knee surgeries over the years. Some great and some poor surgeons. A few things I have learned.
    1. Research your surgeon.
    2. Take control of your PT after surgery. Don't let them slow you down as Scar tissue is your enemy.
    3. Make friends with the pain suck it up. Your rehab is JOB#1 24/7. If you are not working or icing that knee hourly while awake your missing out.
    4. Ice often.
    5, Push your self incrementally and recognize rehab pain from over extending pain. NO HARD FORCING early on .
    6. Understand PT people have to work to a protocol or standard. That does not have to be your standard.

    Hey Meg! Like you, I’m also in my 2nd month in recovery for an allograft reconstruction of my ACL, MCL and also repair of my meniscus which had a bucket handle tear, all caused during a ski accident in March. Similar to you my range of flexion has a lot more room for improvement as I could only go to about 120 degrees with some help and alot of pain. Bought a stationary bike a couple of weeks ago and it kinda helps with flexion going from 80 to 120 after 2 weeks of daily 15min biking. All the best for your recovery journey!

    • @megmed2860
      @megmed2860  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! I’ve heard stationary biking is great for gaining more flexion so I might follow your lead and try that more! Sounds like our knees both went through a lot during surgery so don’t get discouraged if flexion takes longer. Best of luck in your recovery :)

      Hi! I started doing school work remotely a week after surgery, and then I believe I went back to class around 3 weeks after surgery! I had to use crutches for 6 weeks because I had the meniscus repair so I was non-weight bearing, but usually people can stop using crutches pretty quickly after just an ACL repair.@@shan3677

    You are really strong. I can only imagine the pain you went through all things considered. Trying to bend the knee regardless of the pain, really does test one's mental strength. I realized am not as strong mentally as I thought. In week 5, i had to bend past 90, and to be honest i've never felt that kinda of pain. It didn't even hurt that much during circumcision. Am currently at day 45 after surgery. But i gotta say, you are one strong lady. You really are. Keep healing, keep getting better.

    Oh Honey i feel you, this is such a tough tough battle. I had a motorbike fall and damaged meniscus and torn acl-my leg was stuck in semi bend position from day one. It took 3 months for the results(1visit,mri and second visit with the consultant) and i was not recommended physio at all thus ended up with arthrofibrosis. Had to have knee arthroscopic surgery to remove adhesions only. Had to work very very hard to move my leg and get extension and flexion back despite the removal of all scar tissue. Surgeon showed me that leg had flexibility under anesthesia but still had about 70 degrees flexion and 15% on extension was missing. Never mind the quad muscle athrophy i had from not using my leg for three months. So it takes a lot of repetitive exercises but the most help i had from CPM Machine that I would have on for hours when reading and watching tv. It took me good 6 months to get my leg back to flexing and extending... Now had a second surgery to repair my acl with hamstring tendon graft... So hopefully will be back to running and motorbiking by next summer. If they eventually do the MUA for you it will defo help but try renting CPM machine for 2 weeks as it great in pushing your leg to beding and you control how much it will bend it for you. Sending hugs. Take care and dont give up😊

      Hi! I can definitely relate on the intense pain with bending, I also try my best to grit my teeth and get through it! I agree, I think the more you have done in your knee (ACL+meniscus) naturally the longer it takes to heal. Good luck in the rest of your recovery, I'm sure you'll make progress past 90, just stick with it!

    Hiya meg, I'm currently at week three after having a hamstring ACL graft and a tear on both meniscus repaired. Rom is about 70 degrees with full extension. I found giving myself little goals to reach has helped a great deal rather than thinking about how others have achieved a lot more so much quicker. Remembering you once said that we all heal differently and at different times. It looks like you have more control with your knee movements now so hopefully it might start to free up a bit more. All the best for the coming weeks

      @@megmed2860does or did your knee cap pop when bending to straightening your leg?

    • @megmed2860
      @megmed2860  ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't heard any loud pops but I've felt a few weird little cracks when bending, especially as I get closer to 90 degrees. I think these kind of sounds are normal as there is air/fluid/scar tissue still in the knee that's getting moved around when you're bending. However, if you feel a lot of pain with the pop or if it seems weird I would definitely recommend asking your doctor about it!@@jacobgamble5141

      I totally know that feeling! Yes you just have to push through and sometimes give your knee a rest (I’ve noticed the most progress when I’ve had longer stretches of time between PT and my knee was able to calm down with inflammation etc). Best of luck in your healing!

    Thanks Meg for sharing ur recovery progress with videos and I watched all of them.
    I also had ACL reconstruction with meniscus repair Surgery (tire and flipped). My first two weeks my knee was fully locked straight to let meniscus heal. Therefore I only started seeing PT at week3 and started strengthening and straightening + bending exercises. I use single crutch on week3 and this week is my week4 and I can walk without any crutches. Weight bearing was no much problem but bending is a lot behind I can only bend to 60 degree today. My PT also said straight is more important currently to me but I am not sure after this week my knee is ok to him or not as from the front it’s still a bump and very different from the good one. Swelling is still a thing and I just started using Voltaren Gel to replace pills.

    How long after surgery would you say it took you to walk normally again?bend and straightin your leg??

    • @megmed2860
      @megmed2860  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Tough to say--I still sometimes walk with a little bit of a limp when my knee is stiff and I'm about 7 months out (but also starting to jog etc). I was able to walk (with noticeable limp) after about 2 months but not normally until about 3-4 months, and the bending took a while, maybe 4-5+ months to fully get the range back (after I jog I lose range of motion for a few days due to the swelling etc). But it's different for everyone depending on how your body reacts to the surgery/how much scar tissue it produces/etc.
