ACL and meniscus surgery recovery | Final Update
Hi everyone! This is the last video in the ACL and meniscus surgery recovery series, and I tell you how my knee is doing about 1.5 years out from surgery. I talk about the pain levels, what activities I can do, and overall what I took away from the experience. Hope it's helpful!

ACL tear management: surgical vs conservative & graft options
มุมมอง 1.8K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
Hi everyone! I wanted to make an informational video explaining the options for management of an ACL tear. Technically you can manage this injury surgically or conservatively (non-surgical), depending on severity of injury and general activity level. If you choose to have a surgical reconstruction, there are several different graft options that I discuss in the video, along the the pro's and co...

Mental journey of ACL surgery and recovery
มุมมอง 2.3Kปีที่แล้ว
Hi again! In this video I talk about my experience with the mental aspect of going through ACL reconstruction surgery, and the long recovery that follows it. This experience is different for everyone, so take my experience with a grain of salt. Hopefully this can help those who are going through it or who are trying to prepare for the experience. Thanks, that's helpful. And ooh, that noisy knee isn't fun. Your experience rather puts me off the prospect of ACL and meniscus surgery, and perhaps I'll keep going with the conservative management for an older person who was a keen long-distance runner, but perhaps now needs to slow down. Maybe I need to learn to live with potential instability and just manage it.

      @megmed2860 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      it's a really hard choice, as people are successful with both surgical and conservative, and both have their downsides. It seems like the biggest factor in deciding is what your ideal activity level/intensity will be after the surgery. best of luck with the decision!

    • @megmed2860
      @megmed2860 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      i made sure to work on extension a lot early on so that I could make sure I got that back--one thing i did a lot was prop my ankle up on some pillows and let my leg/knee hang down for like 10-15 minutes at a time to get it more extended. it was very uncomfortable but helped me get my full extension back! you could also check with a physical therapist to see what they recommend.

    • @megmed2860
      @megmed2860 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@fenixxx56 that’s a great question, I think overall I’m fine with my choice and would do it again. I would maybe consider a hamstring autograft just because of the stiffness and trouble I had with ROM due to the quad graft site, but I don’t think I would consider a patellar tendon graft if given a redo just because of the long term anterior knee pain that is pretty well documented with that graft. Interesting to think about but I don’t think I would 100% have done something different.

  • @ashlynnmoler2003
    @ashlynnmoler2003 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Another down side of the quad graft is that for people who are under or at the height of 5’2”, the tendon may not be long enough (needs to be ~6.5cm) to be used in acl reconstruction. This was the case for me (I’m 4 days post op) and had to get the patellar tendon graft instead which is still a good choice!

    I’ve been following your whole journey since we were down around the same time. I’m a year and two months post op meniscus repair, so not as intense as yours. The physical therapy I had been prescribed by my surgeon either wasn’t long enough or the physical therapists didn’t push me to where I needed to be. So most of my strength now is because of myself alone. I am getting more and more strength in it but I’m concerned that one of the worst things happened to me, I don’t believe I have full extension. I can fully extend when I’m standing but trying to lay flat on my bed is impossible. My leg and knee are constantly uncomfortable. It doesn’t just feel like my knee, it’s like my hip and ankle as well. I feel I’ll never be able to be comfortable in bed anymore..

The doc did go back in on mine to remove scar tissue and clean things up. Yesterday was my 3rd week (usually do it at home and only go to rehab once a week). In my 1st week I only had 30 degrees, My 2nd week was 53 degrees. My 3rd week (yesterday) was painful as hell that I even cried and screamed and only got into 58 degrees. I am so late and its supposed to be my 8th week now and should be at 90 degrees. Hey megan! I hope you are doing well now. Excellent videos and appreciate all your efforts have made during the recovery period. I had also undergone acl and meniscus surgery, its my 4th week. I am close to 90 degree knee bending and I am walking now few steps without walker. Just cross finger moving forward everything will be going better. How are you feeling while walking now? Are you feeling the same as before?

      Hi! It sounds like you're progressing well, wishing you luck in the rest of your recovery! I am feeling pretty good with walking now--definitely not the same as pre-injury as i have a bit more aches and noises coming from that knee but it's a world of difference from how it was a few months out of surgery. I hope to make a final update video very soon to show the progress after a full year--stay tuned!

    I'm 5 weeks from my ACL surgery, and I'm 130 degrees. You're sure, right? Everyone is different. I was 95 degrees on the second week. My Doctor Mark Adickes MD recommended him 💯 .
