    I’m on week 3 after surgery. Medial and lateral menisectomy with shaves on ACL and MCL as well as shave on tibia bone. I have discoid meniscus. My leg is finally at maybe 10 degree bend. Your journey has been a blessing to watch. Pray you’re doing better every day. My knee just does not want to bend and some days are way worse than others and some days are way better than others. I’m going to fight and try to make it bend more and more weekly.

    First off, congrats on the flexion progress. I am glad you are trying to work it out on your own before doing a 2nd surgery. I am 6 weeks post op from patellar bone graft acl surgery. This video was incredibly helpful and informative, and I really appreciate the comments as well. In the past 3 months I have searched SO many acl videos for tips and tricks and advice with no luck until now! Meg, your tips on the shower chair (a must!), CBD salve & heat pack (I am trying this for the 1st time as I type this) are brilliant. For carrying while crutching, I used a small backpack with slim straps. I will definitely try a wearable ice pack today instead of sitting and icing. From the comments, I loved the tip on the toilet riser, as that would have been a game changer right after surgery! One tip of mine for putting shoes on is a long handled shoe horn. Regarding the CPM machine and ice machine, I was given both for a knee surgery 10 years ago but my recent surgeon does not use them. I was in PT 2 days post-op to get my knee moving (a bit challenging) and no good icing solution. Ice packs do NOT penetrate the thick knee wraps like you said. The ice bottles are a fabulous tip for the ice machine! Wishing you more progress with your recovery and same to all of the fellow commenter's!

    Glad to know that your flexion has improved!
    I am 6 weeks post OP (quad gradt) and recently went past 90° myself.
    I tried hydrotherapy today and I'll highly recommend it. I saw far better progress with flexion after the session.
    I've heard cycling speeds up the flexion improvement process. I'm still a few degrees short before I can start static cycling.
    I would like to hear about whats helping you boost your flexion.

    • @megmed2860
      @megmed2860  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes hydrotherapy has been great for me too! And I can finally do full rotations on the bike so I do that at physical therapy as well. I am constantly bending throughout the day and trying to hold it for 30 ish seconds at its absolute max (pushing thru some pain). Other than that, I try to heat it before bending to try to loosen it as much as possible and I use a CBD salve hoping it will help in that respect as well. Good luck with the rest of your recovery!!

    For those who will be going through this a good tip is get a sitting scooter around the house. I used a knee scooter and made a sling for my leg. Best decision ever. Had a hand to carry things for myself. Nothing is easy but it sure made it a hell of a lot better and probably saved my other knee from all the pounding the crutches were doing.

    @megmed2860 hiya, happy to hear that you have past 90 degree flexion, must be a huge relief. ive also noticed a feeling of what feels like scar tissue breaking up, so hopefully thats a sign of our knee finally freeing up. This bit of advice might be useful, ive been told by a PT that when i have my leg in extension to manipulate my knee-cap with my fingers and push it left to right, up and down, as the knee-cap can become rigid in its tracking motion after surgery, there are YT videos showing this.
    You seem a lot more relaxed in yourself in this video, the pressure to get to 90 degrees can just be such a burden so hopefully you feel at ease now. How is med school going?

    • @megmed2860
      @megmed2860  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I agree, the kneecap mobilizations seem like a great thing to do so I’ve been adding those in as well! Yes it’s such a relief to get to 90 and hopefully the progress will continue. Med school is going well, thanks! Still chugging along :)

    Do you mind going over in more detail about your swelling ? Did you notice the entire knee as swollen or sometimes more on the side ? I had a meniscus repair and I notice more swelling on the side of the knee where the repair was done. Almost 2 weeks post op btw

    • @megmed2860
      @megmed2860  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Yes, happy to talk about this/show my swelling in the next update video but sounds like I had the same experience as you with the swelling. For the first several weeks after surgery my whole knee was pretty swollen, and now 2.5 months out, the side with the meniscus repair is still a bit swollen compared to the other side where the swelling has gone down a good amount!

    Hello from California. I'm a student on the medical track at UC Davis. I just tore my acl and lcl and need to know if the surgery had any affect on your studying/testing. I am suppose to have surgery in the first week of my courses and do not want to set myself up for failure academically.

    • @megmed2860
      @megmed2860  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Sorry to hear about your injury :( I had the same concerns as you, because my surgery was also during my first week of classes. I would say the key was keeping an open line of communication with the faculty, letting them know when the surgery was/how long I expected to be out/keep them updated if recovery was taking longer than expected. I ended up missing a full week, and then was able to do the next couple weeks remotely from home (including remote exams which was very helpful). It was a little difficult to focus on studying at first, as the pain was pretty distracting and it was hard to find a good position to sit and study with my leg brace (and pain meds make it hard to focus). I also had a unique situation because our first week was a health equity focused one-week module, so I was able to make that week up during my first break from school. So, I think it depends on your curriculum, willingness of faculty to work with you, and whether you think you can juggle that make up work along side new course material when you're ready to return. With all that being said, I made it through and am glad I got the surgery over with/didn't push it off. Hope this helps!

    Did you have to go back to work any time soon after surgery? How did that work for you?

    • @megmed2860
      @megmed2860  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I did have to go back to school about 3 weeks after surgery. It was hard because I still was non-weight bearing on crutches and I usually walk to school so that was a bit of a challenge! but I just made sure to have an extra chair to elevate my leg all day and contacted my professors (would contact your boss if you work a job) to make sure they knew the situation and that I might need some accommodations.

    Did you have a lot of pain in your heel and foot in general when you first started walking ?

    • @megmed2860
      @megmed2860  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! I forgot to mention that--the bottom of my foot (just before my toes) and my ankle were pretty painful when I first started walking, and my foot pain continued on for a few weeks. I ended up having some acupuncture on my foot which really helped the pain, and the PT did some sort of release on my ankle with a stretching band which helped that pain.

    Hi, I hope you’re getting better day by day. 🫶🏻 I’ll be 2 weeks post ACL surgery this Thursday. I might have missed that part, but I was wondering, after how much time did you manage to walk without crutches?

    • @megmed2860
      @megmed2860  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Hope your recovery is going well :) I was not allowed to walk without crutches for 6 weeks after my surgery because of the meniscus repair that I had done, so I'm not an accurate representation for people who just have ACL repair! I think within a week or two most people can walk without crutches if you just had ACL reconstruction.
