Jumping in because reading youtube comments, post op, had me so down, and in total buyers remorse. I tore my lateral meniscus 10/22 - had surgery 9/23. In the time in-between, i figured the pain was from stress induced weight gain and being out of shape, on an old acl repair, so i began to workout 5 days a week. Lost 40 lbs in 11 months, strengthened my everything to better support my knee, and none of that ultimately helped. I finally went for the MRI, then surgery. I am now just past 4 months post op and i feel fantastic. The first couple months were pretty rough, especially when reading all the comments of people being up and walking within a week......But here i am now, 18 weeks out and i am back to most physical exercising - hour long walks took me almost 3 months - going down hill can be rough, but up is amazing. I can skip, jog, do the running man, and zero pain. I do low impact workouts, pilates machine, weight training, fast long walks, 100+ squats a day and so on. I do have a new click i hear sometime , and at a certain degree, a click that i feel. I avoid pushing into that second click that i feel to avoid any arthritic type rubbing. Looking back, zero buyers remorse for now. I feel almost back to, pre meniscus tear, normal. I cannot get fully into child's pose as i think my muscles are still tight from over a year of the torn meniscus limiting me. I should also mention, my injury was not really painful. I lost range of motion past 90degrees and had major swelling. and stability loss. But no pain. My knee never locked up, and it only buckled a couple times from sloppy movements. I hope this helps lifts someones spirits.
Curious, did you need your meniscus repaired and sewed or was it a simple trim? The first time I tore mine, it needed to be repaired/reattached so the recovery was long like yours. But my most recent a few days ago, was thankfully just a simple trim, as described in the video, because the root was still intact. I definitely feel better after a few days than I did the first time I had it done 25 years ago, so I’m hopeful I’ll be on a quick timeline. Thanks in advance if you get back to me.
Well it's been about 3 months after my surgery and it has completely healed... no pain what so ever... I lift weights and ride my bike, do every exercise you can think of and literally no pain... So my advice would be for you to take it easy for 3 months and let it heal and trust me it will heal perfectly... If you push it, well you might have complications, so just take it easy and let 3 months go by and you will be absolutely fine...!!!
thank you after reading your comment I am feeling bit relaxed for me its 2 month post op, nil issues after surgery , full weight bear second day after surgery but now after 2 months my leg is sore, I feel like like there is big wound inside
Just had Meniscus tear surgery 5 days ago and I learned more about my recovery from it on here than I did from my Surgeon. Your explanation on the time and level of recovery was comprehensive and very helpful. I have a very physical job that requires a lot of kneeling and bending so I will have a longer recovery getting back to my old self.
That’s how I feel.. I have Meniscus Tears in BOTH my knees and I just had my 1st surgery on 11/6/2023. My surgeon NEVER really explained details about the surgery, but was anxious about performing the surgery. He NEVER explained anything about the Cortisone Injections before he gave me my 1st shot, which I had side effects from it.
Ya I’m in the same boat as you was right now. And my surgeon did not tell me much. I’ll have my two weeks appointment on the 4th and will find out more I guess
Why do patients not ask more questions? I’d think I’d be very inquisitive as to the particulars PRIOR to getting any such surgery to alleviate any concerns. Your obviously want to heal properly and not get all your info from TH-cam University. Next time ask questions and do your research.
This is the most clear and comprehensive commentary that I’ve encountered on the subject of returning to work after meniscus surgery.Response to surgery is so arbitrary, it’s a pleasant surprise to get an outlook that speaks to my situation. Thank you.
I had the sugery..8 am.. Home by 12 and i was walking that night.. No stiff/ swelling. No crutches..walker or need to stop. Back to work the next monday, and i walk to work..stand and sit for the day as a PCA..then home. The itching is what got me.. I am so happy!
I'm a courier and it's my right knee that has the torn meniscus I know everybody bodies are different but do you think I'll be able to drive comfortably after 6 to 8 weeks
Hunny its all brain power.. My knee was kill on the daily b4 i had my surgery, and the relief was immediate!!. So yes i think 6-8 weeks youll be great, but tell yourself you can do it it 2-3.. Watch the surgery on youtube, watch to see what and how so you know why tweeky pains happen. . dont live in fear that you cant, tell yourself You got this and wow yourself.
I am an IT professional and had this surgery on Friday of Labor Day weekend. I was easily ready and able to work on Tuesday. I just propped my leg up on an ottoman and took walk breaks every hour. No problem at all.
Thanks for this valuable info. Most medical literature I've been reading suggests crutches for a week and no driving for 2 weeks! I was looking for real world post op experience like this one. Thanks again.
Had lateral & medial meniscus tears, had surgery on 12/2/22 and was able to walk around the house that same day, I used crutches maybe a couple of times in two weeks, started therapy 5 days later and went back to work 16 days later as a vending machine route man, I'm 58 y/o and weight about 210 in a 6'00" frame. I believe the sooner you start moving around and walking and doing PT the faster you heal. I take breaks whenever I drive from location to location. Thanks for the video👍
I had surgery about 20 years ago. It took me 3 months of rehab before I was to return back to work. Keep in mind how long it's been. Hopefully things have changed cause doctor believes I torn my meniscus again! Praying what ever happens goes well
This is such a good video. I'm in New Zealand and have had my partial menisectomy and debridement yesterday. Definitely lots of swelling and more pain than I expected, however doing okay. I start some gentle exercises in 2 days time and PT at 2 weeks post op. Thank you again for such an informative video 😊
I had my partial medial minisectomy two weeks back and could able to walk with full load just after an hour after surgery. I have started walking around my house daily twice and a very little discomfort is there in the knee due to inflammation in the knee and my doctor has said it will take 6 weeks time for complete healing. So far I am satisfied.
Day 1 Arthroscopic meniscus surgery of my left knee. Surgery was at 12:30 yesterday and was home by 4:00 PM.. Woke in recovery up with sharp pain. Pain relieved after I was given Fentanyl injection. Before leaving surgery center I was able to stand with crutches. Went to bed with elevation and ice. Day 2- Medication definitely wore off and woke up this AM with a good amount of sharp pain and swelling. Ice, elevation and taking Norco 5 every 5-6 hours is helping with pain but 2nd day pain and immobility seems slightly worse than the first. Surgeon is supposed to call me tomorrow and let me know exactly what was done. I’ll try and update with my progress.
Trisha today I am doing fine, there are sometimes where I feel some pressure. But it took me months before I could sit on my knees without feeling any pain
@@luiscruz9738 to be honest, I had my surgery on January 2020, then after 2 - 3 weeks I started doing body training like aerobics, and staying away from exercises that could add pressure on the knee. I was told that I needed 3-6 months top off BJJ, however with the Covid-19 and the lockdown I returned back in September when we were allowed to do Jiu Jitsu again
Just had it done 3 weeks ago, 3rd knee surgery on same knee. It was previously repaired on my 2nd surg. It partially didn't take the repair and 5yrs later it's re-torn. Not 100% yet, slowly using stationary bike daily and walking slowly.. mainly my leg doesn't want to straightened back to normal yet. Best practice is listen to your body, dont overdo anything. Small increments and gradual..add weight, begin to move it, stretch it and bend it. Keep it moving. Do not forget you need to strengthen your leg muscles and glutes afterwards. This is crucial. Everyone is different dont rush recovery just remember keep moving in increments.
I had a partial lateral menisectomy six months ago and my knee still gets swollen and sour when I stand for a long time, which is part of my life as a neurological surgeon in training..it took my whole 10 weeks to get back to work..I thank you for your interesting videos
im retired and 73yrs old but very active- had surg oct 28 and was not able to walk for like 2wks gad to use walker it killed me to be immobile as i was walking 2mi before surg. now 3 months out im prob bac 85%- im now able to walk my dogs every morning and then do a mile walk- i still hav som pain off and on but i work thru it. im doing all my therapy exercises on my own- i do them every day and im jus really hopeful that i will reach a point where i feel good doing my walking- its hit and miss right now! but i looooooove my surgeon and my therapist who both hav helped me get my life bac!!!
I had meniscus surgery on July 17th, 2023. I'm planning to return to work on August 14th. After surgery, my knee was very swollen, and it was so heavy to lift my leg and walk. In a weeks time, I started walking better. My knee felt stiff week 2. I was walking with a cane . I'm now into week 4 about to return to work. I have a bit of a pinch nerve in my back or a back strain 😢 because of the muscle over working to walk. But now I'm walking without a cane, a tenderness in my knee . I'm hoping all goes well with work
I had a meniscus tear and had surgery on Monday and today is Friday and there is no way I’m putting weight on my knee!! I’ve been using crutches and wow this was the worse surgery I’ve had. Dr. Gave me 2 months off of work and a month of physical therapy. I was told i would be walking on it a couple days after surgery and NOPE not at all! Would of prepared better if i knew it was this painful
@@ru2253 2 months after I was back to normal. Went back to spin class with no issues. Only thing that bothers me still is the scars still sensitive to touch.
I am having meniscus tear surgery on Monday. Im concerned about the pain level and blood clotting. I will take as long as i need off from work bc my health and body functions are very important to me
I had my medial meniscus root repair June 14 and I'm still on full extension knee brace and non weight bearing on operated leg. PT after 7 weeks. Recovery is a slow process but I also want my knees for the long haul. I will take my time to go back to work.
I have had the surgery. To go back to a desk job is not a good idea .Yes you are off of your feet but not being able to move around can hurt just as bad as being on your feet. Most jobs don't allow you to take breaks to walk or sit down when you need.
Arthroscopy Knee, Partial Medial and Lateral Meniscectomy Repair - Left Knee Surgery on January 4, 2021. Thank GOD I had some type of knowledge about Physical Therapy Google and TH-cam played a BIG role. January 5th weight bearing and icing around the clock. On the 6th I started doing Heel slides up and down 15-25 times sets of 3 icing 20-25 minutes. ICE will become your best friend. Pushing myself harder and harder by the 7th I started doing more and more exercises and still icing around the clock. Today is January 11th and I would say 95% of the swelling is down walking great but at times still hurts. Surgery was a eye opener for me it put your state of mind in a completely different place. I PRAY for those who lost body parts.
Thanks, good advice. I am five weeks post op and I have problems with weight bearing. I was trying to help take care of my bedridden Mother and I thank that I did too much to soon. I'm going back to work next week. PT is going good. Thank you so much,God bless!
Everyone is different - had 40% of my medial meniscus removed 24 hours ago . Took anti inflaming medication 120 mg before bed last night and none today . Slight ache - I’m tired -but walking around the house freely . Will take another 120 mg anti inflammatory tonight but knee feels good . I am worried though that I’ll never be able to run again ( I’m 70 and a long life marathon runner ) but we shall see ! Best of luck and super recovery to you all !
I can understand why it would seem that returning to a desk job within a few days after this surgery would be easy enough. However, although I have virtually no pain, I'm still unable to straighten my leg and the inability to keep the leg elevated during the day causes swelling for me to the point where it's very difficult to walk. I had the surgery 1 week ago today. Very fortunately, I have the freedom to work from home as necessary. Therefore I work either in my bed or on a chaise lounge or couch with my leg elevated. However, if I work at the computer table, my knee swells and my calf literally starts to cramp in the evening when trying to walk on it.
I had a scope two days before Thanksgiving. Going back to work tmo. I'm glad I had the surgery. Regardless of the studies that say it could lead to arthritis, I was in pain for months already with every step. Limping everywhere. As of 1 week out, I have no pain and very minimal swelling.
Hello Doctor, Your explanation was very informative and example oriented so one could easily relate and understand. I've had a tear on anterior horn of lateral meniscus on my left knee 2 years ago while i was playing football. I had a partial meniscectomy and recovery period for me was about 3 weeks for getting back to my daily routine. And I was strong as ever in less than 70 days. Now, again I had a tear this time on posterior of the lateral meniscus (same) of the left knee. Also had some issue with ACL and a lot of 'wear and tear' in that joint. Again had a partial meniscectomy but I was able to walk without support and bear weight the very next day of the surgery. Now it's almost a week post surgery and i'm recovering really fast, I don't have any pain, yes there is a bit of swelling and inflammation but I feel no pain and discomfort.
I have my meniscus surgery last Tuesday. I able to walk,do jumping jacks, planks weights. It a little swollen but not much. I can bend not all the way. I not able to run and little uncomfortable to climb stairs. I getting there.
I've had 4 scopes and I'm looking at my 5th soon. My last one in 2014 was on a Thursday and I was back to work on Monday. Yes, I was limited but I was able to drive, walk and perform my duties. Prior to that in 1998 I had surgery on Saturday morning and I was on a stage that night (I'm a musician). It just depends on your tolerance but my advice is not to baby it. Try to get back into the swing of things quickly without over doing it. If you're comfortable using a cane that will help since using crutches gets your weight off the knee but it doesn't do anything to help get the range of motion back.
I had meniscus scope on 1995 and meniscus scope other knee in 2011. Now the 2011 knee is getting an MRI because I woke up in pain without doing anything unusual the day before. I'm extremely health-conscious and active and I wonder since you're on stage and you must be also, had you had sudden injuries after the first scopes? Or were they something that build up over time from the lack of cartilage and then you just couldn't stand it anymore and got a scope?
My 17 yr old son had meniscus tear surgery 7 weeks ago just prior to Thanksgiving. The surgery also involved slightly re-centering the knee cap/patella. He was not able to start walking until 2 weeks, then ditching crutches after 4 weeks. After 5 weeks he was able to remove the full leg brace and still has knee cap brace today. The swelling has gone down but he still has pain...especially after a PT session. While he is able to drive he's not able to do any type of high school job yet (fast food, cashier, etc.). I was hoping he would be further along with less pain but the physical therapist thinks he's about where he should be and even slightly ahead mobility and swelling-wise. I'm skeptical as he wants to play football next season.
That was helpful. Had a meniscus surgery 10/19/2023, today is 10/21/2023. I took 1 Naproxen yesterday but have not really had any pain and if there is swelling, it's pretty minor. Two arthoscopic holes, they are dry. Basically sitting around, have walked a little bit here and there. Since it was my left knee, I've already driven a little - automatic only requiring my right foot to start and stop. I am 75; play a lot of golf but because of the meniscus tear from some years back, I don't put much leg/knee twists into my drives. I'm on schedule for some PT next week. Everybody is different, but how long before I return to the golf course where I hit 150 yr drives at the most. [ not very far ] with very minimal leg twist.
Recovering right now. I’m a multi rated skydive instructor and had a bad landing complex tearing my medial meniscus. I work in the communications industry as my primary job. Doctor put me on 6 weeks FMLA. I don’t think I’ll need that long. It’s going pretty good right now. I’m on day 7 of the recovery. I’m just ready to get back in the sky and jump again.
@@Indian-zl3ow there’s a little tightness still after almost 3 months, but they said it’s residual inflammation and maybe a little scarred tissue that’ll work itself out. No pain in the meniscus area. The stiffness is the over all knee where they were in there digging around.
@@stopspinskydiving Thank you so much bro..Wish you all the best.Really appreciate it..My surgery will be on next week, I am sort of worrying whether I can play football with full commitment again or not.
I had surgery for what the dr called a complex tear about 2 weeks ago. Still some swelling and tightness in knee I’ll probably be looking at 4-6 weeks before I feel confident enough to go back to work. I’m an operator in an oil refinery and work 12 hr shifts
@@ru2253 I am returning to work next week so I was out about 5weeks total. Knee has minor swelling I’m treating with ibuprofen and cold pack but i pretty much am back to normal. Still not 100% strength return but it’s good enough for me to return to work. I didn’t do any Physical Therapy I just did stuff on my own.
Hi there! I’ve got oblique meniscus tear in my right knee am planning to get it done in few days time please tell me how u feel and recovery time with the pain etc am really worried thanks
I'm on day 6 after menesectomy surgery. I'm able to walk, but still have a limp, I'm not having pain, it just feels weak. It doesn't help I live on the 2nd floor plus my bathroom and bedroom are up stairs which is probably slowing down my recovery.
Thanks a lot doc. I had my surgery last Thursday almost 10 days ago. I use the crutches for only one day after that I was able to walk by my own. On the fourth day I went to the gym. - of course no leg exercise - The pain to me was maybe two or three out of 10. I started swimming with no pain at all and I can walk about 8 to 10 km a day now. I still cannot bend my leg all the way. But I hope in the next few coming days I'll start going to the gym with a light exercise to my legs.
I was walking 10.5-12.5 miles a day before my knee started giving me issues . Tomorrow they are going to do the work on my meniscus tears and the chunks in between my joint . Hopefully all goes well . The dr said “ If I explore around and find any more issues , you will wake up with a full knee replacement. “
Thanks for a clear answer on what to expect! I'm going for a partial tear repair on Wednesday, I'm a locomotive Engineer and just advised my company expect me gone for 6 weeks. Cheers
I’m going for the same thing tomorrow. What was the process like? Did you experience any severe pain after the surgery or during the night when you are trying to sleep?
@@Jim-bs8ln I have the same question. I have incomplete discoid meniscus with a meniscus tear. There is surgery after a few days and I am scared of the after results. Will the pain go permanently or it will be there, and these kind of questions are hitting my mind.
@@Jim-bs8ln hey, no severe pain just really can't bend the knee much. In a couple weeks when the stitches are out it feels so much better. I just had mine taken out on Wednesday. I started to drive the day before so just about two weeks. I'm walking up the stairs but still can't bend the knee perfect, it's very very tight. No rehab needed just stretching and doing small steps to loosen up. Going to work on the exercise bike soon
@@ForeverRed2011 Thanks brother, My surgery is postponed for 1 week because doctor is saying that there is something left to do and i don't really know what is that so i will just follow his orders. BTW, did that popping and locking of the knee went away or is it still there. Sorry if i am asking too much because i am seriously very tensed because Afterall it is the matter of the knee
My Dr. said MT surgery is on Thursday and you can return to work on Monday. I was out of commission for 4 months!! I didn’t lose my job yet was very close to it. I couldn’t drive for a while and had to get a temporary handicap pass during the 3rd and fourth month.
I underwent meniscus surgery on 23rd Feb 2023. I had a complete Medial meniscus tear which was sutured together in surgery. I weigh 120 Kgs and therefore my Dr advised me 6 weeks no weight bearing, followed by partial weight bearing after that for 2 weeks and full weight bearing subsequently
My surgery was about 4 weeks ago. I went to work after 2 weeks, but I've had swelling after a days work, and pain on the inner left side of my right knee, and below the kneecap by midday. I also tried to lose the crutches, but I guess that was too soon, too. It just seems like it's never going to end.
@@HardeepKaur-mo9jx I'm sorry I never saw your question until a second person commented today, 3 years later. Not sure if it will matter now, but I can say that my knees are both in relatively great shape. I had the same surgery on the left knee about 18 months later. Right now, I can walk at least a half mile all at once with no trouble, and I get about 5000 intermittent steps or so per day at work. I have some pain, but it's not very often, and usually when the weather changes, or if I've been walking more than usual. They both feel very stable, most of the time.
My surgery was full medial meniscal repair across a large tear there's a couple of stitches in my meniscus and I must say full Flex extension is quite painful I still walk with a limp although I do start physical therapy Monday I don't know that I'm looking forward to it because I know it's going to hurt I'm not a small guy I've got some weight on me and I walk with a cane for stability I'm hoping in a few months I can get back to full activity my doctor doctor flowers at Ortho Texas has done a really remarkable job and expects a full recovery in 4 months so I'm still on my journey I'll keep you posted thanks for your video
No, I had the surgery and my knee is throbbing and swelling!!!, no weight bearing at all!!! So 4-6 months just to get back to work,I agree ! This knee is no joke!!!
How’s your knee now? I’m almost 3 months out and still in so much pain. Swelling. Weakness. Can’t stand for long or do simple errands like walk through a supermarket.
Had both my meniscus in my right knee trimmed this past Friday. They actually found some debris in the very back of my knee. Use crutches Friday and Saturday but on Sunday was able to walk without any pain. Did several walks outside for about two hundred feet or so and I'm now able to do around 300 400 feet at a time. The only issue I have noticed is trying to bend my leg which I know will get better with time. Very happy with the surgery. Hopefully we'll be able to run in the next couple of months.
After two meniscus surgeries I finally had to have the knee totally replaced. It's been a year-and-a-half since I had it replaced. The knee is fine but even though I'm and blood thinners I still contracted blood clots. I'm still having a lot of swelling and pain in the calf and I really think I have tendonitis. The bottom of the calf and the top of Achilles tendon is very very painful.
This is what they don’t tell you about these quick partial meniscectomies. You get back on your feet sooner, but it accelerates arthritis and needing a knee replacement
@@georgia5713 I was actually told about the new replacement, but I was told the probably be within the next 7 to 10 years. It depends how active I am and luckily I’m not really active lol.
So helpful! Thank you! I am a self-employed hairdresser and I am having lateral meniscus surgery today and this was very helpful for me to be able to return to my clients ASAP.
I had meniscus repair and I was told I couldnt put and weight on it for 8 to 10 weeks.. AND was doing PHYSICAL THERAPY TWICE A WEEK STREACHING ONLY..THAT WAS THE WORST 8 TO 10 WEEKS I HAD...ONLY A LITTLE BETTER NOW THAN BEFORE!
Just had surgery yesterday tore meniscus and had to reshape thebone I believe. No swelling this morning, was walking yesterday. Went out to dinner, had a little bit of swelling after that. Put a compression ice pack on it last night and swelling went away. Most uncomfortable part of after the surgery was the pillows under my legs. I instantly had more strength in my knee but i havent had more than 25% strength in my knee for 4-5 years. So far so good!!

Had meniscus surgery on right knee on 2-28-24 and as of 4-3-24 I’m still out of work and now have extreme tightness in my knee and unable to straighten it out
i had this surgery done after a sports injury. walked out of the hospital no crutches although being careful. walking around the house the next day without trouble. walking up and down stairs in 2 days. i lifted some heavy stuff about one week after surger and knee puffed up the next day. then went back down the day after. went to see surgeon 10 days after surgery and he said there's nothing that will damage the knee by doing anything i did before includings sports (at 10 days). exercise as much as i can tolerate. i went to physio and he had me doing exercises to build up my quad. i was doing long(ish) walks 2km and it was fine, although leg felt fatigued afterwards. i was doing squate and lunges to build up strength, 5 minutes sessions about 3 times a week. leg would feel fatigued but no pain. did some short runs (20m - 30m) at 4 weeks. no problem, although i could feel my leg was not strong and i was favouring that leg a lot. 6 weeks, i started playing football (soccer) gingerly. running on grass was good. low impact and knee felt good. leg wasn't strong. can't stop, turn, step anywhere near as before. but ran 4km and no problem. leg was tired for a few days after. 7 weeks played again and felt better. doing regular walks, about 4 walks a week around 3km long. leg going good. still protecting it though.
@@MSI47LYF hey man. it's about as good as it can be. keep in mind i'm 42. but i play 2 hours of tennis on hardcourt every week and the knee holds up fine. it's no worse than before i injured it. some weeks i'll play a competitive game of basketball for my old team and that aggravates the knee. however i ice the knee as soon as i get home and it's painless the next day. i don't know how much is me being 42 and how much is because of the injury. but i can stop, turn, step change directions as good as before the injury. football on grass is not problem. i don't think about it and i don't particularly protect my knee and it's fine. like i said, with basketball, i do ice it. my initial injury wasn't a huge tear in the miniscus but it's bad enough to require surgery. a lot factors to consider. but overall, my knee is as good as it was before.
Had surgery on 20 April 2018 and could put weight on it right away and the next day i was pretty much without crutches. My goal is to go back to work in the 3rd week of May. I work in a big Army daycare as a Facility Technician, where i have to pick up at least things, that are 40 lb.
Is it realistic to expect to return to daily cycling 30-40km 10 weeks post surgery? Trying to plan ahead, surgery in 2 weeks time, cycling holiday in 12 weeks time!
Had a surgery about month ago. First 2 weeks is with crutches. Its getting better after 5 weeks. Had injection of hyaluronic acid at the 6th weeks. One more week before getting back to work as a opertion theatre staff..
hi doctor iam 28 yr old i have meniscus tear on my left knee for almost for 5 years from playing soccer ball and since then my knee get better but my knee get locked when iam playing soccer ball and when it does i got minimum pain but after 1-2 hours it become normal so my question is the doctors says do strengthening exercise so if i do it should it improve or should i do the surgery
Hurt my knee in a road accident, grade two posterior horn meniscus tear, unable to fold my leg, wondering should go for aurthoscopy or not, in longer run does it hurt, 24 y old
Almost 48 hrs post op for meniscus removal, not repaired. Using cane instead of crutches. Been up and down stairs with alot of help from cane and railing. Pain is about 6-7. Took one dose of 5mg of oxycodone and it did very little. Naproxen is working better. Wearing compression device on opposite leg to prevent clots, wear it as much as possible. Today i will remove bandaged and wrap knee in plastic to shower.

5 weeks after mine....always swollen, have flare ups where knee feels hot. Going for a 20 min walk is uncomfortable. Yeah around 6pm is usually the worst. I'm an HVAC/cooking equipment tech so we have it hard as well.
i injured my right knee at work 2 weeks ago. doctor just recieved my review with mri & i have meniscus tear & going tto see a orthopedic specialist tmo. im pretty sure specialist will recommend surgery also. this video really helped especially this being my first knee injury 😥
Had my meniscus surgery on 12 /6/17, had a bucket tear on the lateral left leg, plus the ortho cleaned the knee cap and removed some particles, I could place weight on it the next day but tried to a avoid it till the following day,, it's been 3 weeks and getting better, I have been bycling to loosen it up, get the stiffness out of the knee, the stationary bike with the adjustable seat is working for me, plus stretching it, Don't overdo the stretching, if it hurts stop, by the end of the day the knee is swollen a little, so I ice it every night
Do you have a video with the same question for - when 2 surgeries occur simultaneously 1. Acl reconstruction 2. A torn meniscus is stitched. Currently I’m at no weight bearing on the my leg for 6 weeks.
I wish I could put any weight on my leg after my meniscus surgery. I had a complex tear and I’ve been out of work for now 6 days, my Ortho gave me work excuse for a couple more days. I still can’t even straighten my knee fully yet have, been on crutches since day one. I still have swelling on the knee too. Yesterday I said, let me try to work, I work in an office and learned sitting for more than 10-15 min was making the leg swell up. I feel that my hamstring muscle was injured, not saying it shouldn’t feel this way but wow I certainly need more time, body asks for still putting up the leg and icing. Is this normal?
Hi on May 17 2022. I had knee surgery. I had torn meniscus and cartridge flipped off bone. I'm in rehab now. I'm back in gym doing excerises I'm told do. Not back at work soon. I should be back soon.
My doctor told me complex meniscus tear. Only option is arthroscopy surgery. Tired of watching those videos. No need for surgery. It’s been 3 months now still has the pain tolerable to me. But I decided to go or it will get worsen. Have my scheduled October
Thanks sir for you informative info. I had a tear miniscus surgery 4 days ago. My knees still swollen but I can walk slowly already. Can’t wait to heal 100% soon 🙏🏼🤣
I'm getting my surgery done on the 12th of this month so I love seeing these videos and seeing how people how they are after they have the surgery and I'll definitely let people know after I have mine all right have a good day
I had a meniscus root repair surgery over 8 weeks ago on February 20, 2019. I went back to work the next day, Thursday February 21. I am a strength coach and gym owner. I am on my feet all day coaching clients. I was coaching my clients the next morning and evening. I was able to sit down and rest as needed and everyone understood as I was in a brace and walking around with crutches!!! I was in no pain. And because I did not need any drugs (did not even fill my prescriptions), I was driving my husband’s automatic car by the following week. I drove my car, a manual, by week 2. My advice? Start strength training NOW. The reason I was able to get back to work and back to my daily activity so early was the strength I had built over the past 9 years of doing barbell training. Squat, press, bench and deadlift have been the staples of my training programs so we 2010. I was back in the gym training my bench and press the next day. One leg up on a stool for bench. Seated presses. TRX rows on one leg. I have not missed a single training day since my surgery. I am 44 years old. This is my first surgery ever. Never had any issues with my knees while a dancer. Started BJJ in 2015 and quickly learned me 40 something knees are not the same as my 30 something knees!!! ;) I am recovering well...weeks ahead of most people my PT said and it all has to do with strength training. I can extend my knee completely. Barbell training makes you stronger. And harder to keep down after a meniscus root repair!!!!
My right knee was done 4 years ago and i was walking normally on 4th or 5 th day I had no pain and felt great I just did my left knee, my quad (upper knee) is swollen and it doesnt let me use my quad muscles fully and can’t walk normally. It has been 16 days and its really annoying I am a handyman and play basketball and havent been playing for almost a year now.
Is a complex tear the most severe? My doctor only told me it was tare in a lot of places. He didn’t even said what grade of tear was it. My third week after surgery been walking only problems so far is the swelling after activities and when I come down off the stairs still bothers when bending going down the stairs. So far I’m happy with the surgery.
Just had surgery on my meniscus, had a partial tear... After surgery the next day i could walk on it but it did hurt... I'm three weeks after surgery and can walk but still feel a lil pain... I was sitting down and doing some calf raises with weights and the pain came back a lil, so i decided not to do any leg exercises for about 3 months.... All I can say is just take it easy, I wont even ride my stationary bike... I'll post again in about month and let everyone know how it's going...
I had a detached medial meniscus root detachment. No weight bearing for 6 weeks. I see the PT on Wednesday. It’s been 5 weeks since my surgery. I’ve been home because it’s my right leg and I can’t drive. Everyone at work feels I should be able to get right back to work as a teacher at week six. I don’t know what to expect with driving and number of days a week with therapy. My job is a 50 minute drive. It’s very discouraging.
I hear you. My surgery was 9 weeks on 1-12-24. 9 weeks and still swelling and stiff not bending backwards. That’s depressing but I read and believe that at 3 months out I will be 90% good. Because look how far we’ve come since week one 👍🏽 Remind your self you are slightly better Every day. 😊
I’m at the 3 month mark and your reply came just when I needed it. Thank you for taking the time to respond. I appreciate it soooooo much. I’m still in pain somewhat. Some days are worse than others. But I have more good days!! Little by little! I took a screenshot of your comment because it’s such an encouragement!!!! Thank you!!!!
I really regret not watching some videos before my meniscectomy. Even though my doctor said I could put weight on it the same day, I ended up using crutches because I was afraid of the pain. After 5 days of not putting any weight on it, I realized it was just fear. I wish my doctor had explained how crucial it was to put weight on it to prevent muscle weakening. When I started putting weight on it on the 5th day, the pain was excruciating, not from my knee, but from my thigh and quad muscle. Even on day 7, my thigh and leg muscles still hurt, but not as badly. I have my post-op in two days and I'm unsure if my doctor will suggest rehab. I wish my doctor had been more informative.
Definitely seek PT!....my immediate post op chat, the only thing i retained was, to 'move move move' so scar tissue wouldn't build up. Bring all this up at your apt. And demand PT. And from here, just keep moving. Walk, with crutches, as much as you can through out the day, without overdoing it. Also, do light muscle exercises while sitting.....you can find post op exercises on yt
Sir , I had surgery done on 9th june for ACL repair& median menicus repair, whichwas almost 50% torn, i am bit conFused when u can get back to my job, i am power power plant professional and having sitting job most of the time
Had surgery 4 weeks ago. Going through Physical therapy 3 times a week. Really sore and still somewhat unbalanced. Have to cut back on therapy routine. Don't know when we can manage to get back to a mechanic's work.

Respected Dr David kindly add a video on rehabilitation after meniscal repair surgery. It seems a rather complicated rehabilitation programme and as you mentioned in one of your videos that meniscal repair has substantial (10 to 40%) failure rates.
Dr. David Geier because when I had my ist episode of meniscal injury I got the whole lot of idea about meniscal tears from your videos. I found them very very helpful. Now after the second episode of injury to the same vulnerable knee I went for meniscal repair. I tried to find rehabilitation videos on your page but couldn't find one. So I posted the comment requesting you for one such video as it will be of great help to many people/patients like me. Thanks for your such a valuable contribution to community. God bless you.

What is life like after a meniscus transplant? This was recommended to me by my doctor and currently awaiting the meniscus. Is soccer something I can return to? I am 28.
My doctor wants me to stay using my crutches for 6 weeks after my maniscus surgery I am not sure why so long I am already able to walk along with my crutches the same day after surgery?
I had a meniscus repair Dec. 5,2019. A few weeks out I had a scan done to check for blood clots because I was still using crutches because the paint in my calf was so great I couldn’t bare weight. No clot. It was simply muscular. I could walk normally and do stairs mostly normal just after my first PT session. But. A complication of fluid build up is an issue. My surgeon pulled 45cc’s off and injected a Mac-daddy dose of steroids a week ago. The fluid is still there. It came back within just 2hrs of having it removed. What in the world is going on? Why is this happening? I have searched the internet to no avail. Do you have an explanation? The surgeon looked very serious and concerned but couldn’t offer a reason why. He ordered me to be sedentary at home and said I could go back to work only if I was sedentary there as well-my job is the polar opposite of sitting on my ass. I work on a Med Surg unit of a hospital. What kind of info can you give me to help me understand my situation?
As far as the fluid, I had to read 10 years ago that draining fluid is a joke. Your body will compete and try to produce even more and more fluid once it gets drained. I wish I had more for you. But if anybody wanted to drain any fluid of mine, I would look too natural holistic ways of lymphatic and fluid drainage instead. Look up lymphatic drainage on the internet. I know that's not in your lymph nodes but the lymphatic drainage may help support the Speedy fluid movement. That's just my idea about the first thing that I read about the body making more fluid.
I had a buckle handle tear on the posterior medial corner meniscus surgery 3 weeks ago. The damage was removed rather than stitched. I am 54 I still find it painful to walk, drive and carry out certain chores. My knee is still swollen despite elevation and using regular ice packs. I work as a support worker which involves, driving, shopping, pushing wheelchairs, household cleaning and personal care. When will I be fit to return to work?

I had my meniscus repair in about month & half now but still dealing with the physical thearpy and take it easy, but my doctor said i need for 3 months before i can go 2 work and get back to the gem.
Thanks for sharing your experience.
This was really helpful... Did you have ACL reconstruction along with meniscus repair ??
This comment is 5 months old. Now, after 5 months, can you go downhill as good as before your surgery?
If you push it, well you might have complications, so just take it easy and let 3 months go by and you will be absolutely fine...!!!
thank you after reading your comment I am feeling bit relaxed
for me its 2 month post op, nil issues after surgery , full weight bear second day after surgery but now after 2 months my leg is sore, I feel like like there is big wound inside
Can u plz tell me is there any pain while its after two months?
I cant bend my knee its stuck is that okay will it go away?
just had my surgery repair today how long does it take to walk again without crutches? and what is the recovery time frame like?
Was it a meniscus repair or partial meniscectomy?
Just had Meniscus tear surgery 5 days ago and I learned more about my recovery from it on here than I did from my Surgeon. Your explanation on the time and level of recovery was comprehensive and very helpful. I have a very physical job that requires a lot of kneeling and bending so I will have a longer recovery getting back to my old self.
How much it will cost
That’s how I feel.. I have Meniscus Tears in BOTH my knees and I just had my 1st surgery on 11/6/2023. My surgeon NEVER really explained details about the surgery, but was anxious about performing the surgery. He NEVER explained anything about the Cortisone Injections before he gave me my 1st shot, which I had side effects from it.
Ya I’m in the same boat as you was right now. And my surgeon did not tell me much. I’ll have my two weeks appointment on the 4th and will find out more I guess
A couple of thousand
Why do patients not ask more questions? I’d think I’d be very inquisitive as to the particulars PRIOR to getting any such surgery to alleviate any concerns. Your obviously want to heal properly and not get all your info from TH-cam University. Next time ask questions and do your research.
This is the most clear and comprehensive commentary that I’ve encountered on the subject of returning to work after meniscus surgery.Response to surgery is so arbitrary, it’s a pleasant surprise to get an outlook that speaks to my situation. Thank you.
I agree! Very helpful as I am having my surgery next week

Thanks for sharing your experience. Hope it gets better!
I had a scope two days before Thanksgiving. Going back to work tmo. I'm glad I had the surgery. Regardless of the studies that say it could lead to arthritis, I was in pain for months already with every step. Limping everywhere. As of 1 week out, I have no pain and very minimal swelling.

Hello Doctor,
Your explanation was very informative and example oriented so one could easily relate and understand.
What is the good position to sleep with maniscus tear without pain?
Wow how old are you Jasvinder
How did you have tear again? Was it due to sports?
How did you have tear again? Was it due to sports?
Thanks for the information handsome. I'm looking forward to a full and speedy recovery 😊
Everyone is different, but golf is fine for most patients by 6-12 weeks.
Thinking of recovering in a month 😅

I had my surgery last Thursday almost 10 days ago. I use the crutches for only one day after that I was able to walk by my own. On the fourth day I went to the gym. - of course no leg exercise -
The pain to me was maybe two or three out of 10.
I started swimming with no pain at all and I can walk about 8 to 10 km a day now.
I still cannot bend my leg all the way. But I hope in the next few coming days I'll start going to the gym with a light exercise to my legs.
Abdul how did the recovery go. How are you now
Wow! 7 weeks out and still in pain:(
I was walking 10.5-12.5 miles a day before my knee started giving me issues .
Tomorrow they are going to do the work on my meniscus tears and the chunks in between my joint . Hopefully all goes well . The dr said “ If I explore around and find any more issues , you will wake up with a full knee replacement. “

My surgery was about 4 weeks ago. I went to work after 2 weeks, but I've had swelling after a days work, and pain on the inner left side of my right knee, and below the kneecap by midday.
Did you had partial meniscustomy
How is it now?
After two meniscus surgeries I finally had to have the knee totally replaced. It's been a year-and-a-half since I had it replaced. The knee is fine but even though I'm and blood thinners I still contracted blood clots. I'm still having a lot of swelling and pain in the calf and I really think I have tendonitis. The bottom of the calf and the top of Achilles tendon is very very painful.
This is what they don’t tell you about these quick partial meniscectomies. You get back on your feet sooner, but it accelerates arthritis and needing a knee replacement

i had this surgery done after a sports injury. walked out of the hospital no crutches although being careful. walking around the house the next day without trouble. walking up and down stairs in 2 days. i lifted some heavy stuff about one week after surger and knee puffed up the next day. then went back down the day after. went to see surgeon 10 days after surgery and he said there's nothing that will damage the knee by doing anything i did before includings sports (at 10 days). exercise as much as i can tolerate. i went to physio and he had me doing exercises to build up my quad. i was doing long(ish) walks 2km and it was fine, although leg felt fatigued afterwards. i was doing squate and lunges to build up strength, 5 minutes sessions about 3 times a week. leg would feel fatigued but no pain. did some short runs (20m - 30m) at 4 weeks. no problem, although i could feel my leg was not strong and i was favouring that leg a lot.

How are you feeling now? I have a bucket handle meniscus that needs to be removed.
That's tough to hear. I hope you get better!

How did it go Lisa
How are you doing now?
I’m 14 and had this surgery and I’m on crutches and in a lock brace for 6 weeks and pt 6 weeks

I had surgery about two weeks ago I work in warehouse how long take go back
I had a buckle handle tear on the posterior medial corner meniscus surgery 3 weeks ago.
