    Thanks, man. This video put me on the right track. Just a frayed throttle cable that didn't have enough tension to engage the kill switch. Almost started shopping for new mower to replace my 16 year old Honda that still started first pull every time.

    Found your video in Dec 2020. I have a 2014 model HRR216PDA. My kill switch or kill switch wire is bad. Props for the this video. Thank you!

    Thanks DW6, I fixed one today! They're good machines. My son brought one home from the curb. Carb clean, reset the coil gap, and free'd the blade brake. You're top shelf!!!!

    If you own an HRM 214 or 215 do yourself a big favor before you buy a new ignition coil. Coils for these older models are going from $60 - $90 depending on how badly the shop wants to screw you. Remove the coil as described here and then inspect the 3 pick-up points. If they are rusty or greasy this could be your no-start problem. Dirt and rust will not allow the pick-up points to deliver a strong enough spark to fire the engine. Carefully polish them up on a bench grinder wire wheel and use carb cleaner to clean the magnets on the flywheel. Reinstall according to this video and see if it starts. I just did this today and saved myself $78.00. Mower runs great again! Remember trying this is free.

    I had no spark. I was about to buy a new coil, until I found that the kill wire was always shorted. When you pull the safety bar, you should hear a click. That is the kill switch opening. To get to it I had to take off the pull starter and engine shroud. Stand behind the mower, (as if you were pushing it), the kill switch is on the left rear of the motor. When pulling the safety bar back I had to bend a V shaped piece of metal wider so that it would engage the switch. It started on the first pull. (The click is pretty loud).

    A thousand years ago I had a Sears 106 SS motorcycle that LOVED to eat clutch cables. I finally figured out if I took a few hours and worked graphite powder from one end until it came out the other, I could increase the life of the cable 10 times over. Nowadays, I think M/C shops can pump lube into the cable (and they're wrapped in teflon) which is not practical on a mower cable, so I try to dribble a little lithium grease from an areosal can once a season.

      Yes, it does take a lot of time to fix a poor moving cable. I look at them for about 5 minutes, if I can't get it to move, I order a new one. The new ones only cost about $12 delivered.

      I already changed the fuel line and filter. The oil was changed before it was stored.

    I have a quick question, how can you clean a sticky cable that is somewhat similar to the one that was causing the coil to not work right? The reason I ask is my dads jeep plow lift cable is very difficult to move. Any ideas?

      @doublewide6  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are hard to fix. Try wd40 and some pulling with pliers, if that works you are good. Most the time it does not and you have to buy a new one. In a pinch you can make a new new cable and use solder for the the barrel ends. Possible, but takes time... best for a cable that you can not get parts for.

    • @Lanninglongarmmowing
      @Lanninglongarmmowing 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well the cable is probably hard to find. Its for a 1962 willys cj3b. Would soaking it in a parts cleaner do anything? I could try what you said and go from there. Thanks!

      Use a motorcycle cable luber tool, and some chain / cable lube

    The switch opens for running, hence disconnecting the wire makes an open.
