    Doublewide6, thank you for this video! My husband got out to mow a overdue lawn, well, lawnmower would not start! After messing around, cleaning, checking, I find this video and saw how you tested the spark plug without a tester. We changed it and he is mowing it now! One thing to note, for us dummies, ha ha, make sure you make contact with the metal, just like you demonstrated, or you will get shocked. Thank you! Love youtube and nice people who like to share ;)

    Old video but brilliant for the older magneto mowers. Had no spark - traced it back to an electrical connection I had made my self with electrical tape (from the magneto to spark plug)). This video was EXTREMELY helpful narrowing down my problem. I had used electrical (plastic) tape which is normally OK BUT heat from the the mower engine had caused a chemical reaction with the metal connection and electrical tape glue causing problems. My mower was a throw-away (was in the rubbish when I found it) and the previous owner said it just wouldn't start. Cleaning the magneto metal base posts as per this video was a big help too. I used a multi-meter inline from the magneto to the spark plug to check for spark. Replaced gooey connection I had with a metal connector. All good. THANKS for VIDEO!!! Really excellent! Luv my old mower !subscribed!

    10/01/2021 @ 1:25 a.m. I did what you were referring to on the kill switch wire for the ignition coil. It works, The lawnmower started right up after about 10 years sitting in one spot. Thanks again for your video referring to the kill switch wire on the ignition coil. 10/01/2021 @ 1:25a.m. .

    Thanks for the video. My "no spark" was due to the shut off arm not pressing the kill switch enough, thereby it was always in "kill mode". Fixed it with part of an ink pen. Pulling the kill wire as suggested produced spark so i knew where to look.

    yep. the wire to the coil was shorted to the engine....I couldn't see where, but the insulation must have broken down between engine heat (it was laying in contact with the top of the engine) and dirt/oil. This video save me a lot of brain fatigue and money. Many thanks!

    I mentioned that rust on the end laminations will not affect the magnetic field. Although rust will restrict the magnetic field because of the strength of the magnets it will not stop the lawnmower from working. Where the base of the coil mounts on the posts it needs to be free of corrosion because if the coil is not grounded it will not work. This video is designed to help people not "mis inform the public. There are many people that have fixed their lawnmowers because of this video.

    Great Job, and hey nice family!!! I'm hoping that is my problem because I've cleaned the carb and all the tubing plus changed the oil which most people I know never do. Good video. Nice family. Enjoy- they grow fast.I had to replace the cutoff cable. When I put the brake bracket back on I must have left the wire in a bad spot probable rubbing on the flywheel and slowly wearing off the insulation on the wire ( it was a bear to get that brake assembly up in under the flywheel.)Maybe there is a trick to it but I never did it before. It ran for about an hour and then quit. No spark on plug cleaned everything, re gapped it . Still no spark. I looked real good and saw the wire had been gouged and must of been the flywheel and the wire was bare. I fixed that with some solder and shrink wrap. Still no spark. Do you think the bare wire shorted out the ignition module because there is no spark on the coil now? Is there a way to ohm out a module? Also thanks for taking the time to make the video's and have a great day!

    Great help with this. Thank you. The video is clear and process well explained. I implemented one more thing and that is to put liquid soap in the sleeve prior to wire R&R. This helps the old wire slide out and then the new one inserted into the spark plug protective sleeve. No need to split it open. I then used a can of air duster to blow out the moisture.

    I've done everything recommended, certain I had it under control. New coil, .009 gap, new spark plug, filed clean the mounting posts, handlebar actuated kill switch seems to open and close as per a continuity switch - probe on flywheel and on lead to bottom of coil had continuity when the handlebar lever was in "shutoff" mode, none when bar was in "on" position. Still no hint of a spark. Guess next step is remove the flywheel? Haven't tried running with the ground wire disconnected. What is next?

      +Bryan Byrd To possibly add more value to this valuable thread, two full frustrating days and $85 later, a lawn mower shop determined the coil provided by Sears was not any good, and he put in a used one and the mower runs fine. Sears claims the part number 440505 is the right one for engine model number 143404162, but I never had a single spark. Maybe it was defective? Good luck., and thanks doublewide.

    I have a push mower with a B&S engine that will not start 9 times out of 10. The carb is clean and the fuel is fresh. If there is fuel in the tank it barely picks it up and stalls out. If I spray carb cleaner into the intake the engine will start and run good. When I release the lever for a split second the engine immediately stalls and will not restart. I also here small poping sounds. Is that an ignition coil problem?

    Hello, I have a Tecumseh engine on my mower which is a Champion Self Propelled 46cm. I have a spark and I have taken the carburetor off and cleaned it. When trying to start it it occasionally 'fires' but won't run for any length of time and also floods the spark plug. Is it possible for the coil or the spark plug to be breaking down under load? I've tried another spark plug (second hand) and the problem is the same. Any help would be great. Thanks

    My thoughts and prayers for your son. I hope he gets better soon. Thanks for the video. Did I hear correctly, rust on the coil or magnet on flywheel will not make any difference? My mower starts when cold, but shuts down 3-5 minutes later.
    Thanks!

  • @RobertPerrigoOkiechopper
    @RobertPerrigoOkiechopper 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    You need to check the kill circuit as well, the small wire hooked to the coil, sometimes if the circuit is closed it will not let the coil fire. Sometimes that wire will be grounded to the engine.

    • @RobertPerrigoOkiechopper
      @RobertPerrigoOkiechopper 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also check the operation of the dead man lever, if the engine brake is not working properly, it may not open the kill circuit. And this will also not let the coil fire.

    I have no spark in my craftsman riding mower. I have replaced the plug and coil. I also took off the flywheel and cleaned everything. I seen the stator was burnt on 3 coils so I replaced it too. The previous owner said he was driving it and it just quit - he tried to rewire it and I think he left the voltage regulator out and that let him burn out the stator to my opinion. Now back to the spark plug spark. I did clean the ignition coil screw holes. Took off the kill wire from the coil, used a business card for a gap and still no spark! I am lost at this point besides thinking it may be the magnets. Any ideas???? No doubt the magnets are not dead in total. How do I check/replace/recharge them??

    At the risk of asking a really stupid question, I am going to anyway. I replaced coil, spark plug, checked the "kill wire" and everything looked good. Still no spark. When I took off the flywheel I noticed the shaft from the motor was very rusted and the inside hub of the flywheel was corroded. I sanded them both and now the mower runs. Does the flywheel have to have good contact with the motor shaft to create spark? Or did I inadvertently do something in between to fix the problem when I took the flywheel off?
