Good review, but something big that you didn't mention is the 26mp crop factor on the R4. That alone has some people leaning that direction. Reason being is getting extra reach on zoom lenses and retaining excellent image quality. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, Kevin! Your reasons for choosing the A7rIII for your work make perfect sense. I agree for most people the A7rIV is overkill. I do not use my A7III for video -- pretty much still photography only. The advantages I see for the A7rIV are improved ergonomics, auto focus and ability to print bigger. Disadvantages are price and file size. I'm fine with my A7III, but sometimes I wish I had a more sensor and EVF resolution. 42Mp would be enough. The transition from the A7III to A7RIII would be easier/more familiar. Everyone has to know what is the right choice for their personal use and budget!

Just bought the a7r3a. Nice that Sony is keeping the model refreshed with a couple of little updates. I see the greater resolution of the 4 as a disadvantage… so still attractive to go for the r3 now.
This was the perfect video for me. I also have the A7III and am thinking of the benefits in doubling the megapixel count and how much more I could create from the shots I take - Thank you for confirming this and I completely agree with your conclusions :)
The Real Time Tracking is a huge jump in autofocus technology specially for videos and fast wildlife or sports. I am not saying it is a must have but its a extremely good bonus to have. The Nikon D850 is a great wildlife camera without any fancy features, the R3 is almost same with better video. For landscapes, portraits this doesn't matter.
i agree with you, but one thing that has me going back in forth is that sony just announced a brand new SDK with tons of control over the camera, allowing us to do things only canon and nikon users could do before...and while the A7III and A7RIV are supported...the A7RIII is not. I do a lot of macro work and being able to incrementally control my focus via my phone or something without having to build an arduino and a stepper motor would be huge.
I notice Sony sometimes choose not to support certain features even the camera body is capable of supporting it and it seems they do so for marketing reasons, a simple example is they made the autofocus box color red in A7RIV and they kept the grey one (which can be hard to see) in A7RIII even it's a very trivial software update, but they choose to make you stuck with the grey box in hope that you will upgrade, totally horrible.
I can’t believe we are at the point where Sony cameras are “unnecessarily”good for us photographers to buy. Hahaha. I have been using the Riii and never wanted anything more, even when the Riv came out. It’s just perfect the way it is. (Maybe with a little improvement of focusing speed if I’m being picky). I was a little disappointed when I first bought the A7Riii, I kinda expect more detail zooming right in, but after using it for a while and looking back at my old A6000 pictures I see the massive improvement in detail, dynamic range, auto white balance and so on, I need to lose my OCD pixel peeping tendancies and get back to the meaning of photography.

May I ask, do you specialize in a particular type of photography (ex: weddings, events, portraits, etc.)? Do you normally shoot wide open? Both the Sony and Sigma lenses are good. Wide open, the Sony has an edge in resolution, and it focuses slightly faster (according to some). But once stopped down to F4 or F5.6, only "pixel peepers" can tell the difference.

I suspect it's because of the HUGE file size that's being written to the card. After some intense research of the RIV, that was the number 1 complaint of RIV owners. If you're shooting in RAW, you don't have the option to down sample in pixels whereas if you're shooting in jpeg, you do have that option there by improving the write to card speed but you are stuck with HUGE files sizes in RAW. Great camera for landscape photography and commercial product shoots.

The A7III is the perfect hybrid photo and video camera, where the A7RIII is the perfect photographer's camera. Now between the A7RIII and the A7RIV, it depends how commercial your work is, for me the R3 is plenty, and the R4 seems like overkill. But at the end of the day you just need a camera to match your needs/ wants
I went with an R4, found mine open box for $2300, it was brand new and zero shutter count. I agree 61mb is more than I need, and hoping for a firmware update with lower res option and smaller files. I will say the ergonomics of the body and focusing are outstanding.
wow that's an incredible deal, nice, even better the shutter count. I'm sure the ergonomics are better, but for me the R3 is perfect. One thing though, if you go into your settings you can change if you are shooting L, M, or S which will essentially affect the megapixel size you are shooting in. I'm not sure what the numbers are on the R4 but I am sure you could tone it down to 42 or 24 megapixels if you wanted to
You cannot go wrong with the 28-70mm Sony kit lens, I got mine for £120 off ebay, reviewers say its equivalent to the more expensive Zeiss. I find it hard to criticise that lens, its quiet for video, light, practically zero chromatic aberration, great sharpness and fast AF. If you buy a LA-EA-4 adaptor, you can also buy lots of quality cheap minolta lenses off ebay and they AF very fast, though you cannot use those lenses for eye-AF or face detection.

Bottom line, you bought it because it was less money. Different processor, different af system, better ergonomics, and better elv. The ability to crop in is worth the difference for many.
I had the money for the a7R4, went for the a7Riii, if I can’t compose a shot well enough for a crop on 42mp sensor, then I shouldn’t be taking photos. The high file size is ultimately a pain in the ass as it is, if you don’t need it why bother? It’s not always to do with price. I’ve never had anyone complain with 42mp, in fact.. never had anyone complain with 24mp either. Not to mention shooting at higher ISO on the a7R4 is going to lead to more noise.
#1 reason I bought it was for the MP and ability to now create 8k timelapses, and overall across the board the R4 was too much and not what I was looking for
Sadly I don’t think it will ever go away. I’ve been putting vitamin E oil on it daily since it happened and taking the best care of it I can but there will always be a scar

Besides you always have the pixel shifting option for still subjects @120mp.
