Thanks for the video. I’ve think I’m going for the Sony A7rV but I don’t know if the Canon R6 Mark II or the Canon R5C. I’m a content creator and Photographer. I know Canon doesn’t have any third party glass. It’s a tough decision.
been shooting my new A7R5 for 2 days now. pre-ordered as a backup to my A1. my A7R4 was the A1 backup and now it is on practice squad. results as expected. more keepers (mainly wildlife). I rate it as very close to the A1 for what I shoot, with the added ability to crop a bit more. the biggest features over the A7R4 are WAAAAAY better focusing, the much higher resolution EVF and flip screen.

I have the A7RIII for 5 years now. Mostly landscape, some wildlife and astro. The new screen, new bulb mode, focus stacking and of course the resolution choice are a big leap, I'm thinking 🤔
Great review. One thing that I think is worth mentioning is the A7RIV in-camera charger is now a PD charger, which means dramatically faster charge times if using the appropriate USB charging device. Not a reason to update on its own, but a welcome improvement. All the best.
Alone that new display makes me want to buy it!!! I currently own a A7rIII and a A7IV and I still prefer the mechanism of the A7rIII --> I think the A7rV is just the perfekt way for everybody 😍 Another big advantage of the new menu system is the better wifi connectivity with the Imaging Edge APP --> it works way better with more functionality and much more stable on my A7IV!!
I think the ability to shoot 26 MP compressed RAW files is actually huge. For non-pros, the smaller files are far easier to handle. I think it is also cool that the camera will output 26 MP in both FF and APS-C mode. Especially, if you aren't going to use CFexpress cards, I think the ability to shoot 26 MP files is huge.
I would be interested to know a little more. I am just a beginner hobbyist. The sensor is 61mp, why shoot 26mp? Is that what this setting means? Is this setting a crop?
@Trojan Hman yes I believe Vivek is trying to save on space. So by shooting 26mp, the file will be much smaller vs 61mp. So my question is why doesn't he just get a Sony A7iv, which has a 33mp sensor. And your question about 26mp being cropped, I don't think it is. I am not not a camera programmer, but I think the camera uses full sensor and pixel binning process to reduce the 61mp into 26mp. Like how a Google Phone has a 50mp sensor but your image is actually 12mp.
@@trojanhman8136 yeah, there is no reason to buy a 61mp camera and shoot 26mp. Which part is confusing? Pixel binning? Here's what I found from Google search: For example, if you’re using a phone with a 48-megapixel sensor and pixel binning divides the pixel count by four, you may be left with a shot made up of only 12 megapixels. Despite this, the resulting shots will likely be better quality than those taken with a standard 12MP camera phone with a smaller sensor. And since pixel binning is ideal to use in low light conditions, it may result in a better picture than the 48MP sensor would be capable of on its own, in certain environments.
Great comparison, but just one mistake done - A7R IV does NOT have time limit on video 🙂 it is an important mistake, according to me, because I know how many people value the unlimited recording time
I agree with this comment. I stopped the video when I heard this to see if it had been mentioned as a mistake because it does record for hours / indefinitely until the SD card is full or battery needs replacing (referring to A7R4). I've used it for years as my primary video camera.
Nice to know. It isn't a deal breaker but record limit def has an impact on the decision. I found an offer for an a7r4 for $1600. Really thinking about it
Hmm. A7RV has new better AI AF so it is more intelligent identifying eye/subject. Great for most usage cases. However, sensor read out is slower so there are fewer AF calculations. A1 has stacked sensor and does 120 calculations per second. It would be superior for AF tracking fast moving targets like sports or wildlife BIF
Question.....I am using an a99 camera with some minolta lenses (80-200 f2.8, 300 f4, 85 f1.4 etcetera and several zeiss lenses, 135 f1.8, 16-35 f2.8, 24-70 f2.8..) and I´m looking to upgrade the camera, nót the lenses. I don´'t think it makes much sense to get the a99ii. I´'m looking now to the a77r iv or v. I shoot almost entirely stills often in low Light (classical concerts, music concerts). Does it make sense to get a a77r iv or v coupled with a LA-EA 5 adapter?
I'm very tempted. Waiting for more detailed comparison with ISO noise and sharpness tests as apparently it is a little better but nothing definitive. Same sensor, just better processing and better IBIS are good reasons for me. As a hobbyist i don't care too much for all the AI tracking stuff and the flippy screen doesn't get me over the line over my RIV, i never shoot video, no sports either, but i do like the latest and greatest!
I'm a wedding photographer switching from Nikon, and I went with the A7R IV. I shoot medium format film a lot on wedding days, so the IV is going to blow away any old film camera I use.
Hello friend, hello, I am exactly going through the same situation as you, I want to migrate from Nikon to Sony and my higher budget allows me to reach the Sony A7R IV and I also need it for weddings and events. But there are so many people who speak badly about this camera, about the size of the files, about the screen not being articulated, about the horrible noise in low light and endless things. My budget is 1750 euros, which is what the RIV would cost, but I don't know if I'm doing the right thing. Please give me your personal opinion. Thank you very much in advance.
Watched you in 0,5 slow mo...quite funny, slurred speech reminds me of a night out on the town and a late return...hmmmm. OK, funny stuff aside, I always enjoy your camera comparisons. I'm an enthusiast and bought into Sony with a used A7R IV at the start of the year, at a great price. Getting the best out of it has been a challenge at times. I would like to get a V. Do I really need it? No. There will come a time when upgrading becomes viable, via the used channels. Until then I'll stick with what I have.
I have an A7iv for landscape and travel and the A9ii for wildlife photography. In my case it would have been helpful to test the iv versus the v in at least street photography since sport is maybe not the main use of the A7 line.
Good comparison, but you mixed specs of A7 III and A7R IV. There is NO limit for video on A7R IV. A7R IV also supports MI shoe accessories (mics, etc).
I mostly shoot landscape and was upgrading solely for the articulating screen because I do a lot of low portrait shots and I’m sick of laying on the ground to get them. Great additional info in here though, some of which I didn’t realize!
OK Jared, can you or someone else give me an opinion on something? I am drawn to the A iv camera but moving from a Nikon D850, I want a really good view screen and EVF (like on the A 5). I really dont want massive files. I have no need for them. I do concert photography semi-professionally and I need excellent low light focusing and good low light image quality. The Nikon D850 was terrible at this. If I shoot the the A5 with 61 MP, and then use he "medium raw" setting, will I get good low light results without too much noise? Or should I stick with the A iv and just get used to the few drawbacks it has? I welcome any knowledgeable opinions.
Hi, I'm curious, which of the two cameras, between the sony A1 and A7R V has the most photos in focus (at the same burst speed) when a subject quickly walks towards or away from the camera. I have already seen more than 10 reviews, but no one has done this test yet. It would be fantastic to seen this. I think maybe the most interesting test...
Thanks for the great video and very thorough comparison. If this video is not the last word on the technical comparisons of these two models, I don't know what is. I do find one bit that might be worth a correction, though. Somewhere around the 6:30 mark, you make a point that you don't need a special mode to track a train and that normal autofocus would find a spot to track on the train anyway. But there might be a subtlety there that you're missing. Judging by what I'm seeing in Sony's promotional videos describing this feature, when in train mode, the camera appears to make an effort to focus only on the front of the first car of the train rather than on just any random spot on it. Similarly, you may notice that, in the car mode, the focus area rectangle is limited to the front grill and headlights area of the car, rather than just any spot on the overall body. The understanding seems to be that, just like the way the eye is the preferred point of focus on human or animal faces for most people, these are the specific parts of these vehicles that are the preferred focus targets. And being able to do this clearly takes some specialized detection logic beyond any generic focus tracking that locks onto just any point on the vehicle. Having said that, I'm not sure if there's any such specialized aim of the airplane mode. At least it didn't seem to be very obvious from the videos that Sony shared. Perhaps that is more geared toward detecting the shape of a (potentially tiny) plane in a wide sky, with the understanding that, when you're photographing a plane, you'll rarely be close enough to it to have to pick between different focusing target on its body.
You should do a video on which camera to buy between the A7IV vs A7RV based on which one is ideal for whom. The A7RV is obviously superior, but do you need one? I’m currently facing that dilemma and your opinion would be awesome. I’m currently using the a6600 and looking to upgrade to full frame and can’t decide.
im rocking my used A7RIII since 2019, im curious if i should be looking to upgrade at all. been getting into birds lately and the amount of times this camera misses focus is astounding. otherwise its a great everyday shooter! (maybe its operator error for the birds, though). also looking to buy an FX3 for video, but if this one can do 4k just as well then why drop the money on both? understanding one camera cant do everything perfectly
Hi Jared! Great video, but the audio is pretty jarring every time you put your hands on the table... there's a loud thump that's coming through. That aside, I'll be upgrading from the A7RIII to the RV when it launches, and I'm very excited for the upgrade! Going from the RIII to the RIV didn't make much sense to me, but this is a worthwhile upgrade in every dimension for me.
Does this camera "feel" just as fast and responsive as the A1? I rented an A1 for a week and, when I went back to my A7RIV, that's what I missed the most! My camera felt "laggy" and sluggish compared to the A1. And I don’t mean the AF system or the shooting speed or the buffering, necessarily. I mean the general use of the camera. The menus, startup time, time between switching shooting modes, etc....just feels INSTANT on the A1 in a way that it doesn't on the A7RIV. Additionally, there are definitely times when you have to "wait on" the A7RIV, one example that comes to mind is that, after shooting a short burst (only 2-3 shots) of photos, I can't immediately record a video, I have to wait for the buffer to clear. (this is even when using a 300 MB/s write card, since there is a write-speed bottleneck inherent in this camera) The overall responsiveness of the A7RV hasn’t been mentioned in any write-ups or videos I’ve found, I’m starting to think there is an NDA Sony made folks sign to not talk about it!
I am currently looking to replace my Sony A6400 with something better for my videos (too many issues with autofocus on static objects) and I am wondering whether to replace it with Sony A7R 5 or I should look for other brands? :(
Depends on application, but I'd go for the A7RIII/a. That 61mp sensor in the IV is too noisy. The cost difference is also too great. You can get a lightly used or even a new A7RIII for £1,500. A new A7RIIIa, £1,800. Way good enough. I recommend an £8 silicone skin (AliExpress) and pinky (non-battery) grip and hot shoe mounted thumb rest. Vastly improved the ergonomics, which was tough coming from Pentax.
I have a Sony A7RIII and ordered the A7RV. I'm an amateur photographer but I always like the "best of the best with honors, sir!" I think I will be happy with the upgrade! 👍
Thanks for the detailed comparaison. The R series makes for an excellent studio camera. It would have been nice to include this use case in your review (usbc now 10 gbps vs 5; usbc now supports PD power delivery-hoping this will make the R5 camera more responsive with faster tethering; and faster wireless system for those that use wireless; new focus stacking feature…). For the rear LCD, the new articulation looks great but I think you got the dot count wrong; it’s dumbed down on the new R5 to 2.1 dots from 2.36 on the R4a
I have been waiting & hoping for the focus stacking feature. I bird but don't want to go for the A1/600F4 because of the cost. If it plays well with the 200-600, I'll probably pull the trigger mid 2023. Coming from the Nikon D810 (which I love for everything but the in-focus keeper rate), I have nowhere to go but up. 10-12fps would be (ideal for me) all that I would want anyway, The way I am with the itchy trigger finger, sometimes the 5fps I have is too much. Happy shooting.
I think the new menu is easier to find things, and being able to save favorites is very helpful. I would like a search function and also an option to see a Help button that gives an explanation of a specific setting.
Don’t you think the A7RIV is still a good choice for professional work ? I enjoy your videos I was a long time Nikon user you help me switch to Sony thank all your help tips and information sending you positive energy 🙏🏼❤️🤙🏼
i have the a7 III, and i am looking for a high res camera that allows me to crop without losing much quality for wildlife, macro and astro photography. I never knew there is a7R 5 now. I thought the 4 was the latest. LOL!
I bought from original A7R and upgraded to every model except A7R V. I have a feeling, looking at recent massive Sony sales, Sony is about to release a bunch of new cameras. I cannot wait to see what Sony will bring out with A7R VI. Maybe 80 to 100 Megapixels?
It's worth mentioning that the Auto WB Algorithm has been substantially improved tied to the new AF. This has resulted in better skin tones and overall more accurate colors.
I feel like if you just use it as a studio cam (controlled lighting, static subject ) then the upgrade probably isn’t necessary but with the new menu , color science, AF, and viewfinder than it’s a good upgrade if money isn’t an issue for the regular professional user
I have a 6 mo old Sony A7iv I like the video capability but I also enjoy stills. Im not a professional, do you think selling it and getting the A7RV for the higher MP in the still area or do you think the difference between 34 and 61 wouldn't be that different
I have a 7II , I’m looking to upgrade. I mainly shoot raw photos , and I’ve been getting into videos. I don’t have budget for a7VR currently. My budget would be 2500 max. What should I jump to ? Thank you for input.
As a youth sports photographer I have been shooting with the a7riii for several years and have found it to be decent. My only question for Jared is, does the a7r5 have anti flicker. Thats a big issue for me due to bad gym and field lighting in youth sports. Jared, do you happen to know? Thanks
The A7R5 does have variable shutter just like the A7IV for shooting in electronic shutter mode. However the sensor not being stacked will probably give you too much of the "jello" effect to be usable.
Great video, thanks for all the info! As a tip, the delivery was a bit aggressive / appeared like you were unnecessarily shouting at the audience haha.
The a7r iv allows 8bit 4:2:2 HDMI output (not sure if it's raw or not) and you were wrong about the video time limit which is 13 hours not 30 minutes...
I still hope they will add 10bit recording to the A7Riv via firmware, even if over HDMI. Unfortunately you can't get the A7RIV to record for more than about 2 hours when powering over USB-C because it only does slow charging and the battery will die.
So hard for me. I am a hybrid shooter, but I do mostly about 80% photo only. I own the A7iii for about 3 years now and I shoot majority low-light. Should I sell my A7iii to buy the A7 IV or break my bank and buy the A7R V? I rented the A7 IV before, but I barley noticed the difference so I didn't bother to upgrade. Would this one be worth it?
Nice video! I’m actually trying to decide on upgrading my 70-200 f/4 lens to the new G-Master f/2.8. I already have 2 A7r4 bodies, so I ain’t upgrading to the V in the near future. However, I would like to try out the V to really get a feel for the AF improvement. Everyone said the R4 was a game changer from the R3, so I’m not sure whether to believe all the hype.
Hi Ben! I have the same 70-200 lens and I am about to buy the sigma 50mm. May I ask why did you picked the a7r4 isntead of the a7iv? I am hesitating wich one should I buy (for wedding photos/videos and portraits mostly) for almost 2 months now and every opinion could help.
@@STAMAS1991 I purchased my R4s a couple years ago, well before the V. Whether you should buy the 5 depends on your finances. From what I read & saw here, the V just has more bells & whistles- not much new hardware . Do you really need 8.5 stops of shake rather than 5.5 of the IV? Do you need all the new AI for AF? Do you have an add’l $1 300 to spend?

Thank you for all you information during this 2022. By the way. I believe we should go changing or advancing in our equipment. Thank you again. I met you in 2016 when I bought my Canon 5D Mark IV in 2019 I changed to Sony a7R III. I do not regret it.
Great review and comparison video! BTW have you gotten your hands on the latest Sony G Master FE 24-70mm f/2.8 version 2. I was wondering if you can do a comparison video and talk about if it is worth the upgrade from version 1.
Too slow a burst rate. 7-10 FPS is really slow for fast-moving subjects like birds. The Alpha 1 and multiple bodies by Canon and Nikon have much faster burst rates.
I'm moving up from the a7r2. It's looking like the R5 is that much better enough... Don't know if I'd feel the fomo if I'd jumped to R4s in 2020. But for roughly 1k more for the pair it's looking like a no brainer to go R5
why does compression get a hit? Compression doesn't always mean a decrease in quality. Clever compression algorithms can reproduce nearly same data. Can anyone actually tell a difference between a compressed and uncompressed raw in a blind test? Or is the hate hypothetical?
a7R IV or a7R V???

Always the latest and greatest but I'll probably wait for the A1 Mark II or the Canon R5 Mark II.

Perhaps that is more geared toward detecting the shape of a (potentially tiny) plane in a wide sky, with the understanding that, when you're photographing a plane, you'll rarely be close enough to it to have to pick between different focusing target on its body.
the best photography channel !!!
What did you end up going with?
im rocking my used A7RIII since 2019, im curious if i should be looking to upgrade at all. been getting into birds lately and the amount of times this camera misses focus is astounding. otherwise its a great everyday shooter!
I always enjoy and learn a lot from your videos, Thank you so much Jared! Very informative and helpful comparative review!
My pleasure!
(this is even when using a 300 MB/s write card, since there is a write-speed bottleneck inherent in this camera)
The overall responsiveness of the A7RV hasn’t been mentioned in any write-ups or videos I’ve found, I’m starting to think there is an NDA Sony made folks sign to not talk about it!
When it comes to the A7RIV A, was it updated to where you can get smaller raw sizes like you can with the RV?
Amaxing thorough video as always thanks !
Great review and insight as always.....getting in line for the A7RV. You know Skittles is going to look fantastic on the A7RV files
I am currently looking to replace my Sony A6400 with something better for my videos (too many issues with autofocus on static objects) and I am wondering whether to replace it with Sony A7R 5 or I should look for other brands? :(
The video I have been looking for! Thanks Jared!🎉
So what’s the file size and MP for the compressed? You explained the other options but not compressed 🤔
Hi Jared, is any of those cameras good for wildlife photography (speed and AF especially) ? Thanks a lot
Awesome video bro! I pre-ordered mine coming fro a7RIII
I have a Sony A7RIII and ordered the A7RV. I'm an amateur photographer but I always like the "best of the best with honors, sir!" I think I will be happy with the upgrade! 👍
Where did you order it and how much was it
@MANIACRACING Best Buy pre-order, same price
Edit: Probably has the shutter that shuts for changing lenses also? Y/N?
@@thomastuorto9929 YES!
You recommend the Sony A7r v over cannon r5 ??? Or no??
The video I needed at the time I needed it. Thanks!
How is the low light comparisons?
Great comparison. Can you use the same Really right stuff L bracket on the 5?
I think the new menu is easier to find things, and being able to save favorites is very helpful. I would like a search function and also an option to see a Help button that gives an explanation of a specific setting.
Don’t you think the A7RIV is still a good choice for professional work ? I enjoy your videos I was a long time Nikon user you help me switch to Sony thank all your help tips and information sending you positive energy 🙏🏼❤️🤙🏼
I saw from another video saying the r5 can shoot like 30 frames per sec. Is that false?
i have the a7 III, and i am looking for a high res camera that allows me to crop without losing much quality for wildlife, macro and astro photography.
Hi can you make video on ND filters for sensor or do a review. Should we buy these or not?
Please make comparison video between canon r6 mark ii and sony a7 mark iv
i've had the A7rIV for some time now. looking to upgrade. Oh man! i just said that. now I'm getting excited!
Is it the same EVF? 120fps? :)
R3 here and definitely making a switch to R5.
It's worth mentioning that the Auto WB Algorithm has been substantially improved tied to the new AF. This has resulted in better skin tones and overall more accurate colors.
Hi - love your reviews - I am looking forward to see a comparison between A74 and A7R3! the overall rating of A7R3 is higher surprisingly. :)
I feel like if you just use it as a studio cam (controlled lighting, static subject ) then the upgrade probably isn’t necessary but with the new menu , color science, AF, and viewfinder than it’s a good upgrade if money isn’t an issue for the regular professional user
This camera hood for streaming?
Your videos are fantastic. Thanks!
A7r5 or A1 Jared?
I have a 6 mo old Sony A7iv I like the video capability but I also enjoy stills. Im not a professional, do you think selling it and getting the A7RV for the higher MP in the still area or do you think the difference between 34 and 61 wouldn't be that different
It's almost double the amount of pixels/resolution. I guess it really depends how much you're cropping in
I have a 7II , I’m looking to upgrade. I mainly shoot raw photos , and I’ve been getting into videos. I don’t have budget for a7VR currently. My budget would be 2500 max. What should I jump to ? Thank you for input.
Seems like a7iv would be best for you
Yo FRO could you do a video about the business of sports photography? How do you get in and how/amount you get paid for different events? Thanks!
trying to decide if i want to upgrade my a73 to a A7rIV, or just invest in some new glass
Great video. Your estimate of how much a used a7riv is going for is spot on as well.
Great video, thanks for all the info! As a tip, the delivery was a bit aggressive / appeared like you were unnecessarily shouting at the audience haha.
Hi Jared,
you forget to mention A7R IV EVF is 0.78x and A7R Vs 0.9x (and LCD display 2.36M dots is the A7R IVa, the A7R IVs is 1.44M).
Would either of these be great for street photography?
awesome video i SHOULD watch more
The a7r iv allows 8bit 4:2:2 HDMI output (not sure if it's raw or not) and you were wrong about the video time limit which is 13 hours not 30 minutes...
I still hope they will add 10bit recording to the A7Riv via firmware, even if over HDMI. Unfortunately you can't get the A7RIV to record for more than about 2 hours when powering over USB-C because it only does slow charging and the battery will die.
The A7Rv is the first Sony with focus bracketing….finally! I am waiting for the A1 to have in camera focus bracketing before upgrading from the A7Riv
Would this one be worth it?
i'm having the same thoughts here, wanna upgrade my a7iii - what did you end up buying? :)
How did you get a picture and video of Bernie Sanders at the same time?
Hello friend, hello, I am exactly going through the same situation as you, I want to migrate from Nikon to Sony and my higher budget allows me to reach the Sony A7R IV and I also need it for weddings and events. But there are so many people who speak badly about this camera, about the size of the files, about the screen not being articulated, about the horrible noise in low light and endless things. My budget is 1750 euros, which is what the RIV would cost, but I don't know if I'm doing the right thing. Please give me your personal opinion. Thank you very much in advance.
Thank you for your always informative videos. Big Bruno
When will mk 6 'come out ?
Great Video
Can i shot video with the 15mp option?
Hey Jared!!! "Eres una cura!". As they say here in Dominican Republic. Jjajajjajaaj It means that you are a cure to sadness. Jajajajja. I always have to laugh with. Learn too. Thank you for all you information during this 2022. By the way. I believe we should go changing or advancing in our equipment. Thank you again. I met you in 2016 when I bought my Canon 5D Mark IV in 2019 I changed to Sony a7R III. I do not regret it.
Really cool to see Sony use car video of modded GR86s from what looks like Gunsai touge. Looks like Best Motoring clips.
Can you compare the Sony A9ii to the Sony A7RV when it comes to AF response and the "stickiness". Lets say MP is not a deal breaker .
ur detail n chart is great thanks
Great review and comparison video! BTW have you gotten your hands on the latest Sony G Master FE 24-70mm f/2.8 version 2. I was wondering if you can do a comparison video and talk about if it is worth the upgrade from version 1.
Awesome video … the V looks amazing … I’ll keep my IV for a bit longer, what I should’ve bought was an A92 😂
Thanks for this video Fro!!! I've been torn on getting a deal or splurging
What’s the price of this camera ..??
no sniff and blow tests?
Why would you say the A7R V is not good for Bird photos?
Too slow a burst rate. 7-10 FPS is really slow for fast-moving subjects like birds. The Alpha 1 and multiple bodies by Canon and Nikon have much faster burst rates.
Jared, you dropping a Canon R6 vs R6 mark II video next?
I’m a sports photographer who shoots with a a7iii. Is the a7rV worth the upgrade for sports ? 🙏
Too slow
Very nice overview. Thank you for this! I think I'll wait for some more beta testers before making the decision.

@@Battlem0nk why you think so?

ful frame camera for holiday? and prime lens?
I used my Jupiter 200mm on Malta with my sony 6300 body :D
Ok so should I trade in my two cameras a7iii and a7Riii???
Yes.

But the price of the memory cards $$$$
@Rich Barschdorf man I'm still using my UHS-II cards. They are taxing for those cfexpress cards
I'm moving up from the a7r2. It's looking like the R5 is that much better enough... Don't know if I'd feel the fomo if I'd jumped to R4s in 2020. But for roughly 1k more for the pair it's looking like a no brainer to go R5
Did you get the R5? I'm in the same spot with the R2
I just had my A9/ 35 1.4 lens robbed. This video is really helping me make that choice.
멋진 리뷰야! 수고 했어!
why does compression get a hit? Compression doesn't always mean a decrease in quality. Clever compression algorithms can reproduce nearly same data. Can anyone actually tell a difference between a compressed and uncompressed raw in a blind test? Or is the hate hypothetical?
Canon don’t do uncompressed so it’s not a massive issue, the uncompressed is faster when loading into editing as it doesn’t have to be uncompressed
