    I've been wanting a jackknife for a bit now and have been researching them and so far I feel that the Southord and multipick one are the best. At least the best you can buy still.

    LegalLockPicker: We shared to Pinterest!!! I like this SouthOrd JK but I would rather
    see at least a worm or bogy type rake in it ... as I see it, these kits are for EDC or as emergent
    devices. And yes replaceable tips IS a must for me also. Thinner thicknesses would also allow
    for more keyways that this type of set could be useful for. U R Liked here!!!

    I recently got this JK. Will say it’s well made and the picks are finished nicely. The negative I have is how thick the shafts are and mine have a bit of wobble even with the thumb screw tightened down. My honest opinion is JK’s are a bit of a novelty and not the easiest tool to pick with.

    I would like to have a bogota tip instead of the deep hook. Otherwise nice jackknife and I really like the flat black finish.

    • @LegalLockPicker
      @LegalLockPicker  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those are my feelings as well especially b/c if you are carrying a jackknife around you need either need speed or are missing the key. Other variables as well obviously but you are absolutely sacrificing feedback with the jackknife so you need to have a rake / bogota something like that would compliment the Jackknife for sure

    Great video and great review criteria. Include more history on the brand reviewed. Very true on the SouthOrd. As to the SouthOrd jackknife. Agreed on your review. Very nice. Durable pick heads. The rubber gasket on the set screw, breaks and or dries out and further wears down and or breaks and you find it in your pocket in the dryer. The set screw wears and strips soon after the rubber gasket loss. That’s the only fault, and the non-replaceable pick heads are the other fault. Other than that a nice tool. Very nice for the money. Take care.

    • @derrickhogue1868
      @derrickhogue1868 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only other fault. This is purely personal preferences. The pick head selection is well... There are other sets with a better selection of pick tools.

    • @derrickhogue1868
      @derrickhogue1868 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Legal. You sure brought back some memories on this jackknife pick. Surprisingly the first thing that broke was the tensioner. You only have the one size. So this was in my heavy handed tensioning phase. The tensioner wouldn’t fit a lot of times, picking at odd angles on locks on chains, hasps, doors, gates, etc. I torqued, bent, finally broke the tensioner so it wouldn’t fit back in the holder. Lost the thing and would find it in the pocket after the wash. Had to get a street cleaner bristle handmade tensioner and rubber band it to the jackknife pick. Of course heavy handed tensioning, one size tensioner means a lot of pressure on the tension thumb screw. In and out usage, sitting in a warm pants, coat pocket. Lint, dirt trap from hell, loose change wedging into it. Dried out the gasket, over tightening of the thumb screw. That lead to stripping some of the threads. More rubber bands. Never broke a pick. Bent the crap out of few of them. But you can bend or lightly hammer back into shape. Had this tool, loved and hated it for its flaws. The thing is. Had to hide this in an inside coat pocket, or pants pocket. You see if you’re questioned or searched by the Police in Seattle, WA. While it’s not against the law to own one legally. If you’re up to no good- public intoxication. You’re searched and they find this. Well and you’re in a heavy crime area. You’re going downtown. Luckily for me the officer took down my information, confiscated it and either go home without my jackknife pick or come with me in cuffs to answer for some serious infractions. I took the first option and beet feet for home. Miss that tool sometimes. Ah well. What a story.

    It may just be me, but living in the UK those tools and their shank height I think personally would be a bit of a ball ache to wiggle around euro cylinders. Probably good for emergencies, but I doubt you'd want to pick with one of those full time.

    I love the overall concept of a Jackknife, especially as an EDC or backup to a main set, & agree Southord deserves some homage paid for their design.
    What have always been negatives for me, however, is the limit on tensioning tools as well as, to a lesser extent, the number of pick profiles & respective pick gauges available. Two of these hang ups can be far more easily remedied than the other one, with home brew options on replacement picks a relatively easy fix, alongside commercial replacements. I look forward to seeing in your reviews if any of the designs comes close to rectifying the lack of tension wrench options. With regards the Southord offering specifically, the fit & finish seem grand & the contours of the handle/pick body look very accommodating. I think they’re missing a trick by not offering alternative or replacement picks. Hopefully, that o-ring lasts.
    My big question would be, how do you find the feedback, both compared to the others you’re reviewing & to standard picks? Once you’ve had your hands on all of them, I would be interested to know if you would prefer to carry a Jackknife in a pocket over a slimline pick set. Appreciate you putting together this series as, to my knowledge, no one else has put so many against one another & I’m genuinely intrigued as to your findings. Will you convince me to go for a Jackknife? My mind is open & I’m ready to be a believer (!).

    • @LegalLockPicker
      @LegalLockPicker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jonathan that is exactly spot on, how can you work on high security locks with the lack of non-conventional tension tools and lock picks? It's hard enough using a specific tool in 0.015' with a TOK bar in perfect conditions.. How are you going to use jackknife with absolutely no give and less feedback? It is extremely difficult for sure :) good point

    I have a Haoshi one that just read "HAOSHI" instead of "H&H". The pin started becoming loose and I ended up losing it, so I replaced it with a Chicago screw. Had to drill out the holes ever so slightly. Works great.

    I have a question about jackknives in general. How often do you need to pick a lock in your daily life? I don't think I would one enough to carry around with me.

    • @LegalLockPicker
      @LegalLockPicker  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah yes, I do get that question more often then you'd think. Here's the deal if you have a set on you , you're more inclined to use it that's just reasonable deduction right but if you aren't in the business or industries where having to unlock doors / cars / apartments I can see the reservation here.. why would a Paralegal or Dental Hygienist need to ever unlock a door? So I do see the paradox here but for others including hobbyist it makes sense or carrying it around to practice , I suppose it all depends on motive. Great question Brian

    Nice idea for a giveaway. I’ve wanted the multipick jack knife for awhile, but I haven’t picked one up yet. I would really like the Mad Bob’s though. But since they aren’t making them anymore.... multipick it is. I find it interesting that SouthOrd was the original creator of the first jack knife. But it seems like they haven’t made many advancements with it, which is a shame. However the price tag is very good for what you get. I agree that they should offer replacement picks and they should offer all their pick profiles as replacements so someone can customize the pick for their personal tastes. I like that there is a snake, but a double peak bogie would be better in my opinion. I think if you need to use a jack knife pick set, it’s likely an emergency situation and you’ll need in quick. So I think it would need to be a bit more rake heavy and less hook-centric. So, snake, worm, double peak bogie, city, triple bogie and a shallow or medium hook. A way to store an extra tension wrench would be nice too.
    Also, I shared to MeWe. I don’t use FB, Twitter, Instagram or any of the other big data collection social media apps.

I like the look of the Southord Jackknife, but I'm not sure I would purchase this one if the picks can't be replaced if damaged. Seems if a pick breaks, your only option is to buy a whole new Jackknife. That is a big negative in my opinion. Looking forward to the next review :)

So now it comes down to well if I can't replace the tips and one breaks would it be more economically viable to buy a cheap one and throw it away or a much more expensive version and replace tips as needed. Unfortunately when you go down that road it turns people off and the end result is nothing is purchased or completely skipped over. Great comment Jason, hope you come back today for Day2!
