    Just bought one of these and it appears they might have been watching this video because the hook and extractor are much "trimmer". Doesn't mean I am talented enough to use them or that I won't follow your advice and replace them...just that they appear to have tried to improve the product. Yaaaaay BosnianBill!

    • @bosnianbill
      @bosnianbill  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I also got a newer one and found they had installed a magnet inside to keep the picks from flopping around. Wow, constant product improvement. Nothing like German Engineering!

      @kevinmorrice 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      my grandfather always said " if the germans were as good at fighting as they are making things they would have one the war in a year" german engineering is second to none

      For what its worth, i just bought one April 2020 and the tensioner still sits nicely and works well. It no longer has the extractor, it has been replaced by a medium hook but all the others seem the same. I dont see or feel a magnet, but after using them for a couple of days the picks will bend laterally a little and they will never flop around when put away. Very happy with it.

      I got interested in picking because of both you and Bosnian Bill. My genesis set from covert instruments came in today and I have successfully picked 3 pads, a gun lock, and an extra door knob I had laying around. I'm already looking at this to add to my edc :)

    I use to pick padlocks when I was about 12-13, and recently have started watching your videos.
    I recently had the urge to try picking again (using bobby pins) and I started on my front door (Yale). It took me about 15 mins, and a lot of effort, but I eventually managed to get it open a couple of times. I looked at the key only after I had picked it, and saw that there was a fairly difficult bidding, as well as 6 pins, some of them feel serrated too.
    IYour videos have taught me much about what to feel and listen for when picking a lock, and I plan on practicing more to improve my methods and technique.

      Thanks, I wasn't actually sure haha, never having read anything on the subject, I didn't know. I should probably do some of that.

    I have this wonderful tool in my briefcase for 5 years now. I opened a bunch of doors, cash cassettes, file cabinets, lockers and other stuff that contains a lock. My workmates are so thankful when they lost a key :D. Makes a lot of fun. I have a bunch of Picks at home but this thing I use the most. Love it! Greets from Germany ;)

    I didn't see this vid till now...but I bought a ' refill ' set of the ones I liked ( and just knew would work ) and I've used them without the handle, well....just because I don't have one :-) The first thing I opened was I think was a Litto with a simple 1 turn = 1 lock, got it open in under five minutes. Then I tried it on a double locking one...had to call it quits after about seven min. ...because I had to pick my daughter up from school. Still am thinking about making a handle though...just haven't gotten to that ( been more then two years... ) Btw, am teaching my daughter how to pick lock now...She's six, and loves it !

    I carry this set every day in my change pocket. It's done quite well for quick jobs when I have gone in to see what the customer needed, and didn't need to in my whole kit.
    It paid for itself on the day I had to open a filing cabinet at a bank.
    Can't go wrong with this.
    Edit- Mine is the newer one that has the extractor replaced with a short hook. Much more useful IMO.

  • @BWDuty605

    Just finished modding my Jackknife so it's exactly to my taste now.. it took less than an hour and I'm very happy.
    I filed down the ridiculously long hook, both the tip of the hook and the shaft of the pick because I couldn't get it to fit into most keyways. It's more of a Euro/Slimline profile now. I also put a tiny dimple in the end so that it sits right on the key pins. It's more of a medium hook now.
    I filed down the key extractor so that it will fit into most keyways much better now, and reshaped the "harpoon" at the end to grab better as well.
    I replaced the half ball with a SouthOrd Slimline Bogota (SLS-12) that I cut down and drilled a hole in to fit into the set. I don't understand why SouthOrd doesn't make a bogota for this set, but it's wasn't too difficult with a Dremel. You need to make sure that you get the hole in the *exact* right spot and shape the end right or it won't lock into place perfectly. Mine is a tiny bit off but I'm happy with it. It looks perfect, just doesn't lock as tight as the other picks. I'm super happy with this mod. This set needed a bogota badly in my opinion, since it's mostly great for raking/quick entry.
    I filed down the base of the half diamond just a bit so it's a little more defined, it's been great for zipping locks.
    I finished it off by polishing all of the picks with 1000 grit for a nice smooth ride!
    I really wish I could put a picture here, but I'm sure you guys get the idea. The pin that holds all the picks in place comes out from the side with the lettering, so you hit it from the side with *no* lettering. This really is a great little set, and I really feel like I've improved mine. I still keep the Sparrows Tuxedo (that I've added quite a few Sparrows pieces to) in my back pocket, but I love having the Jackknife on a carabiner on my keyring as a backup. I noticed on SouthOrd's website they mention updates to the tool, and my lock nut stays on super tight, so I think the broken/lost lock nuts some people had issues with are a thing of the past.

    I was hoping to see you use the gizmo t pick some lockage. Perhaps comment on how it "feels" to use those picks in comparison to more traditional Petersons or similar. Or heck, do a comparison between the various jackknife format pick holders.

      +bosnianbill
      Yes, would say for emergency uses only from looking as there is only one wrench too. I know what you mean regarding different pick use. That is what baffles me with Southord interchangeable dimple picks and the GOSO lookalikes. Once tip is screwed in and having no joy, you have to re-set and spend time popping another in. That is why single handled ones such as Souber are great. I just tend to keep the standard flag in the interchangeable

    Good work bill. I've started lockpicking a little over a year ago now, and I must say this is a product I would buy. Perfect for my keychain or in my backpack. I agree about changing several of the picks, as for my personal preference, I'd mod several of the existing picks, buy another feeler pick, and rake pick, to replace the ones I'd dump. Again great video I'm always looking forward to the next.
