    I had a set of cheap unbranded cranks that came standard on my Fuji track, they felt fine but I knackered the non drive side arm by mashing up big hills.
    I replaced with a similar price crank and the exact same thing happened up the same hill!
    So I replaced the ST bb with a hollow tech and put a 105 crankset on it and no more problems.
    I also ride the same hill on my Cinelli‘ s, one with a Dia comp Grande comp chainset and the other with 7710’s and also no problems, so In my opinion, quality pays.

    I honestly have noticed very little difference in ride quality between the generic crankset that I started with and my Omniums. I'm not pro or even a remotely competitive amateur, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but I have done races like Red Hook, and not just fun little group rides. Upgrading my wheelset was by far the most noticeable upgrade I made, and at least personally, I'd recommend getting the best wheels you can afford before you even start thinking about upgrading your cranksets.

    Though not a fixie or track rider, I do have experience with diffrent cranks. My cheapo MTBs get delivered with triple cranksets on a square taper bottom bracket and they are ridicilously bombproof. Bearings last very long and stay smooth just as long. But even under mild power, they feel resistant and sluggish. Like the bearing friction increases so much more under load.
    Then I have regular hollowtech cranks from shimano that have way smoother bearings(ceramic aftermarket in my case) way stiffer, better machining and bottom brackets are easy to replace(one inexpensive tool) but they last perhaps a few thousand kilometers. My sora BB held up 4500km and is completely shot. Water rusty bearings etc.
    And then i have Rotor 3d+ cranks on my TT/triathlon bike. Super stiff, lightweight, very high quality BB30 bearings pressed into the frame, excellent machining and anodizing. Paired with an 53t QXL chainring it looks nice, is quite aero and fits my pedalomg style very well. But replaci g that chainring is expensive. Interestingly, bearings are less than 20€ for the set.
    But IMO, these 300€ cranks are my choice for the best feeling crank and best finish. Yes, the 100-200€ is gona work just fine, but this feels like premium mediocre to me. Either get a real cheap crank for a beater bike or get a very high quality one IMO

    I choose rocket ship. I have Miche primato and matched Bb on my commuter and omniums with a Phil wood BB on my newly built dream bike. Both crank sets are fantastic. For the price the primato is fantastic and I would recommend to any commuter/messenger who needs a crank that can take a hammering.

      I'll spare you a longer wait: Get the cheapest one you can find in the colour you want that fits your frameset.
      If you tension it correctly during assembly and it is fitted correctly in the first place you won't notice the difference. You can save a tiny bit of weight and obviously get fixie points for a Chris King headset or sth. similar. But the most basic headset will last the life of any bike and due to how large your lever (the handlebar) is you wouldn't notice the difference in smoothness anyways.

    Even slightly out of round chainrings can be made almost perfect. First find the spot where th chain fits loosest. Cut tiny shims from a soda can. Loosen all chainring bolts with Allen key. Slide a shim between the chainring and crank spider at the low point identified before. (push from outside straight in.) Tighten chainring bolts fully. Try turning crankset to see if chain tension is closer to uniform. May have to repeat and add more shims. With some persistence that lower end crank can be almost as good as higher grade components.

    I upgraded from an Intro7 crankset which cost at the time about $100 to my current FSA Vision aero crankset and I noticed a difference pretty quickly, not massive but it was obvious. Upgrades are only worth it depending on how in tune you are with your bike and the components. Im quite a serious rider where once a week I do 100kms in about 2h50 +- so I do ride harder than most. I also just last week upgraded my Vision chainring to the KAPPSTEIN ruphus chainring and going from a "consumer grade" (using the term VERY loosely) chainring to a bespoke chainring has made my riding experience extremely smooth and its not smooth because of lube or a clean chain, its engineered smoothness and its noticeable to a point where I wont be going back to any other chainring. (paired with a KAPPSTEIN Pro-Line rear cog and Miche Pista chain which runs a lot quieter than Izumi)

I have been looking into this practice and have mine temporarily lashed with heavy duty zip ties and I def notice a difference in stiffness and a reduction in noise as well , I'm probably gonna try the soldering next. Nothing work, after pushi pedals I could hear non stop metallic noice of chain against front derailleur. I realized that his is is Easto C90 crankest issues, i was out of alignment. I purchesed the cheapset Rotor Vegast, (chainring are nade of single piece of alu). Zero problem without any noise, under any pressure it has been working perfectly, for last 3 months I never dropped chain! It extremeny precisly made, sfiff and light. And usse also use with 12 speed groupset!Price Easton in basic C90 allow crank arms 50/34 double chainrings USD 250 plus delivery, Rotor Vegas 250 Euro, 50/34 double chainrings.

      Those wheels looked great but were dangerous. Hopefully you didn't get hurt. The cranksets above 105 have failed at the epoxied seam ( hollowtech). Not sure if Dura ace track cranks have the seam. Hollow forged is hollow without the epoxy seam. SRAM is iffy, Campagnolo expensive, but Sugino 75 is the old reliable. Don't risk your safety.

    Hi Zach. I’ve been looking at the Chinese market for bike parts; ie carbon seat posts, stems, handle bars. How do these compare with brand-name stuff here in USA? Chinese parts are obviously way cheaper but are any of them any good? How can you tell? Thanks.

    • @psychoaiko666

      Yow man, I only buy European and American. A lot of that stuff is also produced in China, but quality control is the issue.
      My ex ordered a light fixture from China and it arrived with some bends and a couple of busted soldering welds (no big deal really) and they immediately sent a new one free of charge.
      It's like they expect things to be broken.
      So, I guess what I'm saying is don't order bike parts from China, might just save your ass (literally).

We are seeing harder days now so more humble times when eating well is an achievment in Spring 2020. I like the many Taiwan made cranks with the cool hoop chainrings with no cutouts in 44-52 teeth

    It is as on all things .... The perceived improvement in quality diminishes incrementally as price rises.
    With "urban" fixies, a lot of the rationale for a higher spend is based on "cool points" among your tribe.
    The best way to have a quality ride is to keep the machine nicely maintained. Not obsessively maintained; just looked after.
    Most fixed-gear commuters or urban pose machines are not raced. Really .... you can fit very crappy, cheap components and you won't notice.
    Spend money (if you must) on tyres and brakes.
    And keep the chain tension right.
    Cities are full of fixies with expensive components and flapping, slapping chains.

    Everything functions properly th-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Nothing was damaged in the box aside from a decal on the fork. The decal was missing a piece of a corner but I ended up peeling them off anyways. Assembly is easy BUT make sure you tune up the derailleurs. Both the front and rear need adjusting. I'd advise going to a bike shop but I opted out and put in 10+ hours with the help of TH-cam. Ended up fraying a shifter cable but all in all I learned from the experience. The Brakes work well but the front caliper needs adjusting or at least mine did because the rotor was rubbing against the pads. Make sure you swap out the seat, grips, and pedals. For the short run you'll be fine though. I've read that this bike isn't built yet for hard trails but I just need it for the city. PA has some of the worst roads and being in a mountain this was a great choice. Worth the investment!

    Stupid question here, why does it seem that everyone changes chain ring size rather than rear sprocket?😣

    • @MattSezer
      @MattSezer 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think that's true, as I feel most, myself included, just change cogs to change rations. The only reasons I can think of for changing your chain ring is that you want to maintain a certain amount of skid patches or you don't want to add or subtract links from your chain, which you have to do if you move up or down more than a few teeth.

    • @2EOGIY
      @2EOGIY 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did someone else bend crank spider? Sugino dd is my first crunkset ever that is still stright. Not sure if it because 144bcd or because DD. My only issue now is braking alloy chain bolts.

    • @psychoaiko666
      @psychoaiko666 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because changing the chainring doesn't affect the drivetrain as much as changing the cog.
      I don't know exactly how it works, but have you ever riden a road bike or mtb?
      If you shift gears in the rear you notice a big difference. Ignore the front gears they have differences of over ten teeth vs a single tooth per sprocket in the rear.
      So basically ppl replace the chainring rather than the cog to keep a familiar feel for the bike while gaining a bit more speed.

    Ouch! So if you’re not a high performance racer and you go for the more expensive crankset you’re just flexing, telegramin’ or being irresponsible with your money? You see I’ve been riding a bike for sometime off and on since I can remember and consider myself a powerful rider but when you are bending $300 cranksets and make the decision to save money for months and months to buy what you hope will be a crank set that doesn’t have play to where every time you give it torque it scratches your frame? 🤔 i just hope one of your listeners don’t hear this and think I’m just flexin’, telegramin’ or just being irresponsible with my money when in reality the $300 cranks just weren’t doing it over time.

    130 bcd is no different then a 144 these days. The tales of them being lesser is from a tme when chainring production was far less capable. Nowadays a 130 bcd chainring is/can be just as strong as a 144, if anyying you've just added a tiny bit extra weight on a larger spider. That extra material and weight might add to some extra stiffness of course, which is a big deal to many. A 144bcd is a track crank becaue you can get a larger tooth chainrings, where with 130 or 110 you cannot get larger then 48/49t i believe. Not to mention you can now get all chainring for a 1/8 track chain as well.
    Obviously if you compete in bike races those.factors will mean lots and make a difference in the end. But I mean if you are just a rich kid that likes to show off his bank account and believes fixie points make you extra cool, sure also. But to just say more expensive is better without all the proper information is very basic, lots of factors come imto play. Its probably fair to say the more reputable the brand, the better quality parts, instead of just asking is more expensive better. Cheers.
