I've found the bikes are better, components faster, but Brooks was best then, best now, fixed gear riders same attitude, style, it's kind of like riding choppers, too. Mine's flat black. I was looking at "beater bikes" and think I might try a fixed gear, haven't in, well, a long time let's say. Town's only four miles from here. I do agree with Zach on Gatorskin tyres. They're bulletproof, light and gummy. I've been using Gatorskins for 3 years and they've never disappointed. I'm on my 3rd set right now.

My first set of gatorskins also gave me two flats... in the first week. They were freak incidents though. The first flat a large shard of glass got caught in the tire while it was raining, and the second was one of those pressure splits that you cant even patch because the gash is too big. After those though, yeah super smooth riding
The thing that changed the way I ride my fixed the most lately is to have switched from Shimano SPD to the crank brothers system. Yes the fact that setting the resistance for unclipping is made with settings the height of your shoes with small plastic and rubber spacer is a pain compared to just adjusting the set screw on the Shimano. But the fact that I'm not afraid to pull like a maniac for climbing or skidding whilst being able to unclip easily at the red light is worth the hassle. I'm using the Mallet which has a big platform so a can use soft MTB shoes and walk comfortably when I took tracklocrossing a step to far for my ability or when I'm delivering a package at the 8th floor in a building without a lift. I was skeptical when all my MTB rider friends kept telling me good things about them but I'm glad to have finally listened to their advice. (Of course you loose quite a few Fixie points compared to leather straps but SPDs don't provide much point either😉)
My buddy is a 225lb rider, got gators and had 2 punctures within a couple of months and here I am riding, 55lb lighter, 32c conti 5ks with zero punctures for over a year.
I would add a Dura Ace (or similar high quality) lockring to this list. It doesn't happen often but I have had a lockring fail and it was quite the day.
Iv had a lockring fail because I braked so hard when a lady popped out of a bush with a baby stroller. I locked that rearwheel up so fucking tight all you heard was the biggest snap of metal ever
My elbows got sore just watching ride footage. Wide bars came into FG from crowd doing tricks where they need to reach bars while leaning behind saddle.
The campagnolo pista cranks are amazing if you can get them at a good price. They are a bit expensive new, but a decent used set is still worth it. They are by far the stiffest and highest quality feeling cranks I have ever used. I'm using a FSA Gimondi set right now only because my Campy cranks along with the entire bike burned in a fire. It was a hand made lugged frame I made myself. The Gimondi cranks are still good, but they do not have that same feel as the Campagnolos, they are on a different level.

The Nitto noodle bars you recommended have been absolutely worth the hype. Those bars feel like they were created by the gods themselves, feels like the human hands were designed for them and not the other way around lol. Also Sugino 75’s have also been worth the hype for sure. Most elegant and beautiful cranks known to man imo and even after coming from super stiff all city track cranks(andels) I could actually notice a bump up in stiffness while riding 75s with the sealed bottom bracket
YNOT straps i got them because i heard they are really good. Some time later all of my friends got them after trying them out on my bike. The way your foot is secure yet can easily fall out is just so amazing. thats the best way to describe them
I agree with this one. Having stiff easy to get into straps makes a huge difference. When you have the cheap straps, they smash down and you can't have the same confidence as you do with thick strong straps like YNOTs. aka "da tony's"
I’m all about vintage track components such as...almost anything Campagnolo/Dura-ace/Sugino as they are a testament to their durability and strength which almost always pass the test of time. Toe straps-Alfredo Bindi last forever and are my choice. However, those Toshi double straps look to be made from similar materials and look dope. I might look into those if I can ever scrape up enough money to buy a Keiren track bike.
I know you liked your original version Brooks Cambium saddle until it broke apart. Try the "all weather" version C17 it's far better than the original cambium and just as comfortable, it won't wear out your pants either.
Wheels with phil wood hubs are the best upgrade I ever made. Always rode the factory wheels, boy o boy do quality wheels make the bike feel 100 times more smooth and solid.
I got a spring-mounted seat post byschulz G2. This made my rides a lot more comfortable, since the roads are not the best here and I tend to use my fixie as gravel bike.

Yes, with this, and 2 short sections of chain attached to it with spare master links, I was able to fix a broken spoke on the road. Spare spokes zip tied to both wheels. Don't leave home without it! Up to 4 broken spokes on back wheel, 1 spare left and Lbs out of spokes, they ordered 75 of them for me! (Minimum order). I will change all the spokes. 4000 miles. At least now I'll know my spokes will all be DT. I prefer to build my own wheels.
Yes, I have Pedro's Trixie fixed gear multi tool. Edit: Another great one is Portland Designs Works 3wrencho. Maybe Zach could do a segment with tools and accessories for fixed gear.
I remember bull moose bars on all the bike shop Mountain bikes in the 80’s. I also remember everyone taking pipe cutters to the ends because they were too wide for trail riding in Colorado. 😃
Brooks are good if you only ride in one position, but I feel they’re petty uncomfortable when you shift in your saddle to go into the drops. Also, they’re a pain to deal with in the rain, including at least the older version of the Cambium;. they both absorb water.
I mulled with idea of Cambium, but seeing variations of saddles for same or lower price, with or without cutouts made me to cancel whole Brooks affair. It can't be true Brooks have invented only valid saddle and others are wrong.....
@@event4216 Exactly! They’re just hype at this point. There’s a reason why modern saddles exist and people don’t make them like they did 100+ years ago like Brooks does. Their only modern saddle, the Cambium, is a decent saddle, but is nothing special in my opinion, and you’re paying more for just the name, which also makes it more attractive to thieves.
so this will sound odd but the crane bronze bicycle bells, of all the accessory things ive tried to get cars or walkers with dogs and noise canceling headphones on attention so i dont freak them out or what not when wizzing by or have them do a california stop and mow me down when i have the right of way these are by far the best for doing that and they look so simply cool with their classic design and are reasonably priced at around $25 and last forever especially if you care enough to actually polish them.
I'm 5'7" and 200 pounds, if im worried about weight ill watch what I eat for a month or two. LoL Having said that about weight my best most comfortable seat is my Chinese knock off carbon seat. I just picked up a Kilo TT Pro for 300 yesterday. Haven't even ridden it and I love it. Nice orange. The seat post was seized and I couldn't get it off so I dropped it off at Velo Trap today hopefully can get it unstuck.
Sugino 75 of course! Also on my new bike I spent a good amount of money on the drivetrain, and it is worth it. The combination of Sugino 75 cranks (and bb) with Rotor NoQ chainring, Izumi V supertoughness chain and Kappstein sprocket (yeah, I know spending that much on a single fucking sprocket seems ridiculous) is soooooo smooth. My advice, save up to buy that really expensive shit. It took me ages to save the money for it, but it's just so worth it.

I ride a road crank, SRAM Rivals, and I can't tell the difference between my mom's Omniums or buddy's China 144 square tapers; they're all fine in sprints or otherwise. Maybe your chad giga thighs can feel it but mine, and i'm willing to bet most, can't. That being said, Sugino 75 look sick and if they make you happy then great. I have a white industries headset and a 350$ carbon fork on my bike, both an objective waste of money and yet I like them a lot.

I've had shimano 600 road crank on my first fixed gear (was a conversion, kept it bc it worked). Omnium bb is as bad as they say, I've never had anything as grindy as that. Had a bunch of El cheapo square tapers and (at the time in my mind) they worked just fine. But this drivetrain gave me an "OH!-experience"
True blue! Too bad SRAM Omniums had a flawed bb. They were the closest to a modern crankset our niche has had. They looked cool too. Shimano chose to stick with Octalink, while Campagnolo stuck to the ISO standard square taper. No advantage over Sugino 75. Shimano could easily created the best crankset with their hollow tech bb but chose not to. It's probably due to low sales volume we have all lost out.
I recently purchased a Priority Bicycle's Ace of Spades (Aluminum frame, Carbon fork, Belt drive, Flip/Flop rear wheel). First fixie for me. But, I love it! Clean and quiet!!! Sorry Zack, I went with Priority for the belt drive and aluminum frame. I live in central Indiana and am sick of rust (chain, frame, steel). But I will definitely be giving Wabi a look for my next (fifth lol) bike!
Don’t get the hype about gatorskins, I’ve ridden em and thought they were hard and uncomfortable compared to GP 4000’s or 5000’s or my personal fave Vitoria rubino’s Never punctured though, but to be honest only ever had a couple of punctures on anything else.
Ive always had this issue with Conti. Great in dry but terrible in wet... almost half of my crashes or falls were from losing grip cornering with conti
Way I see it, compared to a GP5000 or some comparable road tyre yes they’ll be slow and less grippy and feel like shit, but they’ll last way longer, they’re significantly cheaper, you can skid on them and they’re grippier and faster and feel better than something like a schwalbe marathon.
Had more issues with gatorskins than any other tire. Everything from surprisingly frequent punctures and pinches to manufacturing defects. I find the main compound too powdery/dry. You get longer more slippery "cooler" skids but they don't stop as well IMO. Get maybe 3-4 flats a year max with Ribmo tires and the tread seems to last longer. They're also cheaper. Can't say I speak for everyone, just the experience I've had.
After discovering this channel last year i bought the cheapest break-less fixed gear i could find and started riding in NYC. It was was hell in winter but still fun as hell. Anyway I'm ready to upgrade to a better bike and you sold me on the Wabi Zach. I'm about to order that bitch tonight! ⚙️👍
@@HaniJIsmail I got a silver Wabi with honey leather bars, seat and foot straps. All silver hardware. They didn't wanna do a glossy metallic chrome paint job, but the grayish silver I got is still pretty classy. The ride is crazy light, which is a dream for walk ups in the city.
I would say a good pair of sealed bearing hubs. I’ve owned and used formula hubs for a while because they’re so economical. But got a pair of Paul hubs and laced them to some decent rims. If you ride often enough, it makes the whole ride feel a few notches better! So I’d say, when you’re ready, a pair of top shelf hubs (and bearing replacements when needed) definitely makes my list!
I would say the main problem with Formula hubs is the locknut arrangement on the axle. These come loose sometimes when you tighten the axle nuts and can destroy bearings by unknowingly delivering excessive bearing preload. I've got SKS industrial bearings now and applied red thread lock to the locknuts. Automotive Brake cleaner was used to remove grease and provide a better grip. If it ever has to be disassembled a heat stripper gun can be used. New bearings after that. Paul, Phil, and DT are certainly a lot better but cost so much! I'm looking to rebuild the back wheel by changing all the spokes. Too many miles, too much weight. Ask yourself if you'd do all that for hubs that would last a lifetime. To me it is no big deal. It's also very hard to find fixed gear wheels for sale right now.
I found a 1991 Bridgestone Mb1 in my garage. Rides okay but it def needs a tune up. I was thinking of just making it into a fixed gear. Thoughts everyone ?
Been riding Bullmoose bars for about two months now. Got both the b901r for my threaded setup and b903r for the threadless. 903 is wider than the 901 by about 5-6cm. Both respond amazing, with turns being very effortless due to the witdh. Get a lil creative, and you can use the triangle cutout as a cup holder 😂
What kind of turns, slow and sharp? When I started to use risers of shoulder width I were surprised how agile bike became. I turn by leaning bike while HBs are almost perpendicular to top tube.
@@event4216 def slow and sharp. Speeds lower than 10mph allow very sharp turns with just an index finger, while 15+ allows slower but snappy turns with just a flick of the wrist. You can even steer with your elbows on the bars while you eat a sandwich, because it's just that sensitive
Definitely agree with #1, gator skins are the way to go for me especially paired with my rear blue aerospoke, lol. (And yes I don’t have an issue with weight)
Bars integral with stem are good while nothing changes. Put 'em on other frame, shorter or longer, and whole fit is different. I see Schindelhauer moved away from integral stem-bars combo after Victor and that's for good is it costs a lot more to change position of HB's.

Im looking to get a riser bar to swap out my dropbars and get a wider tire/wheelset/gear ratio for some light gravel/offroad rides. but no way im going to ride m that wide. Does anyone have good suggestions? Also what do you guys think about Miche components? (crankset/bracket/wheels/cog)

I'm an old German and I love my Phil Wood high flange flip-flop track hub in ... my ratbike chopper 😉. And the old Brooks Colt on it.
Brooks are good if you only ride in one position, but I feel they’re petty uncomfortable when you shift in your saddle to go into the drops. Also, they’re a pain to deal with in the rain, including at least the older version of the Cambium;. they both absorb water.
I mulled with idea of Cambium, but seeing variations of saddles for same or lower price, with or without cutouts made me to cancel whole Brooks affair. It can't be true Brooks have invented only valid saddle and others are wrong.....
@@event4216 Exactly! They’re just hype at this point. There’s a reason why modern saddles exist and people don’t make them like they did 100+ years ago like Brooks does. Their only modern saddle, the Cambium, is a decent saddle, but is nothing special in my opinion, and you’re paying more for just the name, which also makes it more attractive to thieves.

so this will sound odd but the crane bronze bicycle bells, of all the accessory things ive tried to get cars or walkers with dogs and noise canceling headphones on attention so i dont freak them out or what not when wizzing by or have them do a california stop and mow me down when i have the right of way these are by far the best for doing that and they look so simply cool with their classic design and are reasonably priced at around $25 and last forever especially if you care enough to actually polish them.
I'm 5'7" and 200 pounds, if im worried about weight ill watch what I eat for a month or two. LoL
Having said that about weight my best most comfortable seat is my Chinese knock off carbon seat. For some odd reason I love the thing

I just picked up a Kilo TT Pro for 300 yesterday. Haven't even ridden it and I love it. Nice orange. The seat post was seized and I couldn't get it off so I dropped it off at Velo Trap today hopefully can get it unstuck.

Also on my new bike I spent a good amount of money on the drivetrain, and it is worth it.
The combination of Sugino 75 cranks (and bb) with Rotor NoQ chainring, Izumi V supertoughness chain and Kappstein sprocket (yeah, I know spending that much on a single fucking sprocket seems ridiculous) is soooooo smooth.
My advice, save up to buy that really expensive shit.
It took me ages to save the money for it, but it's just so worth it.

And of course I'm well aware that square taper is outdated like hell. But hey, it's fitting for a vintage track bike.

@@psychoaiko666 Bebo has a point that drive trains are overhyped ad infinitum and Zach admits as much in numerous videos. I ride a road crank, SRAM Rivals, and I can't tell the difference between my mom's Omniums or buddy's China 144 square tapers; they're all fine in sprints or otherwise. Maybe your chad giga thighs can feel it but mine, and i'm willing to bet most, can't.
That being said, Sugino 75 look sick and if they make you happy then great. I have a white industries headset and a 350$ carbon fork on my bike, both an objective waste of money and yet I like them a lot.
@@TheSpaceBrosShow maybe it is me and my chad giga thighs, but I have had a bunch of different cranks (and bb) over the years, and I did notice huge differences.
I've had shimano 600 road crank on my first fixed gear (was a conversion, kept it bc it worked). Omnium bb is as bad as they say, I've never had anything as grindy as that. Had a bunch of El cheapo square tapers and (at the time in my mind) they worked just fine. But this drivetrain gave me an "OH!-experience"
True blue! Too bad SRAM Omniums had a flawed bb. They were the closest to a modern crankset our niche has had. They looked cool too. Shimano chose to stick with Octalink, while Campagnolo stuck to the ISO standard square taper. No advantage over Sugino 75. Shimano could easily created the best crankset with their hollow tech bb but chose not to. It's probably due to low sales volume we have all lost out.
Thoughts on the Priority Bike Beltdrive fixed gear?
I recently purchased a Priority Bicycle's Ace of Spades (Aluminum frame, Carbon fork, Belt drive, Flip/Flop rear wheel). First fixie for me. But, I love it! Clean and quiet!!! Sorry Zack, I went with Priority for the belt drive and aluminum frame. I live in central Indiana and am sick of rust (chain, frame, steel). But I will definitely be giving Wabi a look for my next (fifth lol) bike!
Don’t get the hype about gatorskins, I’ve ridden em and thought they were hard and uncomfortable compared to GP 4000’s or 5000’s or my personal fave Vitoria rubino’s
Never punctured though, but to be honest only ever had a couple of punctures on anything else.

Ive always had this issue with Conti. Great in dry but terrible in wet... almost half of my crashes or falls were from losing grip cornering with conti
Way I see it, compared to a GP5000 or some comparable road tyre yes they’ll be slow and less grippy and feel like shit, but they’ll last way longer, they’re significantly cheaper, you can skid on them and they’re grippier and faster and feel better than something like a schwalbe marathon.

Had more issues with gatorskins than any other tire. Everything from surprisingly frequent punctures and pinches to manufacturing defects. I find the main compound too powdery/dry. You get longer more slippery "cooler" skids but they don't stop as well IMO. Get maybe 3-4 flats a year max with Ribmo tires and the tread seems to last longer. They're also cheaper. Can't say I speak for everyone, just the experience I've had.

After discovering this channel last year i bought the cheapest break-less fixed gear i could find and started riding in NYC.
It was was hell in winter but still fun as hell.

They didn't wanna do a glossy metallic chrome paint job, but the grayish silver I got is still pretty classy.
The ride is crazy light, which is a dream for walk ups in the city.

I would say a good pair of sealed bearing hubs. I’ve owned and used formula hubs for a while because they’re so economical. But got a pair of Paul hubs and laced them to some decent rims. If you ride often enough, it makes the whole ride feel a few notches better!
So I’d say, when you’re ready, a pair of top shelf hubs (and bearing replacements when needed) definitely makes my list!
I would say the main problem with Formula hubs is the locknut arrangement on the axle. These come loose sometimes when you tighten the axle nuts and can destroy bearings by unknowingly delivering excessive bearing preload. I've got SKS industrial bearings now and applied red thread lock to the locknuts. Automotive Brake cleaner was used to remove grease and provide a better grip. If it ever has to be disassembled a heat stripper gun can be used. New bearings after that. Paul, Phil, and DT are certainly a lot better but cost so much! I'm looking to rebuild the back wheel by changing all the spokes. Too many miles, too much weight. Ask yourself if you'd do all that for hubs that would last a lifetime. To me it is no big deal. It's also very hard to find fixed gear wheels for sale right now.

Pake Rum Runner is another extremely underrated steel frame fixed gear bike.
Been riding Bullmoose bars for about two months now. Got both the b901r for my threaded setup and b903r for the threadless. 903 is wider than the 901 by about 5-6cm. Both respond amazing, with turns being very effortless due to the witdh. Get a lil creative, and you can use the triangle cutout as a cup holder 😂
What kind of turns, slow and sharp? When I started to use risers of shoulder width I were surprised how agile bike became. I turn by leaning bike while HBs are almost perpendicular to top tube.
@@event4216 def slow and sharp. Speeds lower than 10mph allow very sharp turns with just an index finger, while 15+ allows slower but snappy turns with just a flick of the wrist. You can even steer with your elbows on the bars while you eat a sandwich, because it's just that sensitive

Bars integral with stem are good while nothing changes. Put 'em on other frame, shorter or longer, and whole fit is different. I see Schindelhauer moved away from integral stem-bars combo after Victor and that's for good is it costs a lot more to change position of HB's.
Brooks saddle might be more comfortable for you, but no saddle fits all. Every cyclist knows that

However, I want 2 bars that offer me either drop/race or commute/gravel not 1 that does both. (i might in the end still take m tho :P )

You can't go wrong with a Brooks saddle. So what if it's heavy. You have to sit on it all day. So comfort over weight suits me.
