@@FinnLovesFood Ribena and Vimto do limited edition squashes/cordials in the wintertime, winter warmer Vimto is the standard Vimto with notes of cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves, winter spice Ribena is black current with spices both are meant to be drunk hot.
Ribena has been around in the UK for at least 40 years. You may need to experiment to find the ideal strength - some people like it weak and some like it strong. It's also very nice served hot in a mug as a winter warmer.
Ribera was first made in 1938 and during world war two it was distributed by the government as a way of getting children vitamin c when it first came out it was only Blackcurrant but now they have other flavours
Fentimans is well known as a producer of temperance drinks and they are based somewhere in Lancashire. At one time they actually ran a sizeable chain of temperance bars all over Lancashire and the north, but they are now down to just the one bar.
Although the label on Ribena suggests 4 to 1, it's really a matter of taste of how strong you like it. It's great in winter because it contains massive amounts of Vitamin C (more than OJ). Vimto has been around a very long time. Another secret recipe (like Irn-Bru), it's basically a mix of fruits. Ginger beer is the oldest of all and we've enjoyed it (sometimes mixed with beer) for hundreds of years.........................the ancient Englishman.
I always think of ribena as a drink for small children, it was marketed as being high in vit c, so I can't drink it now without feeling very nostalgic. Doesn't taste the same now though they added sweeteners instead of sugar. In fact the only cordial taste to survive the sugar tax is Vimto, which still tastes the same to me. We lived in the north of england, and in the early 80's we used to visit my aunt in the south, and I was shocked to find out that vimto wasn't sold there! We had to take a few bottles with us for her as she missed it. Ben shaws pop used to be sold in glass deposit bottles, their cream soda was popular, but my fave was always dandelion and burdock (again sadly not the same since the age of artificial sweeteners).
@@FinnLovesFood I live in the town where they produce Ben shaws .As a 51 year old the local pop lorry would call on the street as a kid where I we lived .Very much like the ice cream vam You paid for your pop /soda and was given a refund when you returned the bottle.I loved the cream soda and yellow lemonade is./was nice.!dandelion and burdock rocks too but I bet the Ben Shaws one is fizzier than what you tried with the other one .
I love Dandelion & Burdock which I missed so much when I was living in the States until I found Root beer. My friends stateside love Vimto and Ribena squash, the later being great when you are suffering from a cold just mix with boiling water instead.
The thing with squash (what we call concentrated fruit drinks like orange and Ribena) you make the strength to your taste, so try lots of different strengths to find your preference.
Dandelion and burdock was traditionally made out of dandelion and burdock roots. It has been drunk in Britain since the Middle Ages, when it was a light mead. Today's its regarded as an old fashioned soft drink, which reminds people of their childhood, when fewer soft drinks were available. It's often sold in fish and chip shops. It was my favourite, when I was a child in the 60s. Irn bru is Scotland's most popular soft drink and comes in a diet version as well. Ribena, and Vimto, comes in a fizzy or cordial form - probably more popular as a cordial, which needs to be diluted with hot or cold water, although I wouldn't add as much water as you did - I prefer it stronger. Really enjoy your enthusiastic videos. Cyfarchion o Gymru/Greetings from Wales 🏴
I used to work with a guy on a building site, who started bringing bottles of ginger beer to work instead of irn bru. He used to leave his irn bru lying about and everyone would drink it. Nobody touched his ginger beer 😂
Ribena is good for making frozen lollipops... or having it with hot water in winter months... also good in fruit punch bowls... iron brew is a unique taste but not so popular as Coca-Cola or lemonade but iron brew gives a better taste when its in a can, in a bottle you miss part of the flavor of the can it also costs 0.79p for a litre bottle where i am, 4 dollars you paying for the postage as well ginger ale is only drank by old folk these days in the UK dandelion and burdock is one of the oldest sodas in the UK traditionally it was made from fermented dandelion (taraxacum officinale) and burdock (arctium lappa) roots hence the name vimto to me is the soda version of ribena...
That is interesting that Irn Bru can taste better in a can. We'll have to try it again if we run across the canned version. Do you ever put sparkling water in Ribena? I was thinking that could make it like a soda.
@@FinnLovesFood the best version of Irn Bru is if you are able to get it in a glass bottle, it is a Scottish drink that outsells Coca-Cola in Scotland and apparently it is the only ‘first world’ country in the world where a Coca-Cola Schweppes product isn’t the highest selling soft drink. When I was a kid back in the 80’s, it was really difficult to get Irn Bru anywhere other than Scotland, with only a handful of shops in other parts of the U.K. selling it, eventually sometime in the 90’s the large supermarket chains started carrying it but only really in the plastic bottles or cans, it is still quite rare to find it in glass bottles south of the border. Luckily I am a Scot living in a predominately Muslim area in the very north of England and as the Muslim community seem to have embraced Irn Bru, it is quite easy for me to get it in a glass bottle. Ribena made with sparkling water/sprite/7up is lovely. Personally if I buy Vimto, I get the concentrate version, that way I can have it as strong or as week, as hot or cold, as fizzy or still as I feel like at the time…all concentrate (or diluting) drinks can be enjoyed hot or cold and Robinson’s now do a range of them aimed at adults, the lime and mint is a favourite of mine.
For Ribena should can uses as much as you want for your own drink in the uk we make it different strengths to what you like. And iron brew comes in one flavour and it’s from Scotland and the price of two litres of iron brew in the uk is £2.00 pounds
I had a friend in the early 90s who could get slightly high on Dandelion and Burdock, literally 3 cans and he was borderline drunk and yet no harmful effects and no hangover - you have no idea how much I envied him!

Ribena you have to typically dilute it stronger compared to other brands because it's not naturally as strong as other cordial and squash brands it's just the name that helps it sell really. There's also a strawberry flavour one.
There's an antiseptic ointment available in the UK called 'germoline' and the smell of germoline is EXACTLY the same as the flavour of Root Beer, so it's no surprise that few Brits enjoy root beer!

My favourites are Ribena Irn Bru Dandelion & Burdock VIimto (fizzy and squash) Ginger beer (hate it) Ribena is also good made with warm water when you have a cold, so comforting. Also good in milk as a milkshake.
1:10 Fentimans is probably what you would consider somewhat of a craft brand, rather than mainstream like Coca-Cola and PepsiCo. They've been going for over 100 years but the first time I tried it was back in 2013 when I visited Kew Gardens in London as part of a college biology trip. As a Brit, I never saw it anywhere until then. These days you can find it easily in our every day supermarkets. The Curiosity Cola always reminded me of Haribo cola bottles.
I enjoy a Cheeky Vimto: one shot of port topped up with a WKD Blue. I'm not sure if you get WKD over the pond. Gin and ginger beer is a great combo Irn Bru is a great hangover drink. All the drinks you tried are very common throughout the uk
I work virtually next door to the Irn-Brew factory, near Glasgow. All you see all day, is a constant stream of Irn-Brew logo'd trucks coming and going, all with the slogan 'THE BRU MUST GET THROUGH' down the side..
I’m from scotland & I drink irn bru almost every day 😂 it is very popular here. The recently changed the recipe so it now has less sugar in it. So it doesn’t taste how it used to 6/7 years ago etc. It only comes in 1 flavour but we also have a diet version with no sugar in it and the 1901 version which has no caffeine in it. But they all are the same flavour. Vimto is also very popular too as well as Ribena. We also have a concentrated version of vimto, where you mix with water and that has to be my favourite dilutant juice. Xx
Well done for actually putting the drinks in the fridge. I see too many videos where people are trying the drinks at room temperature. You never get the true flavour unless they are refrigerated
Ribena is a cordial not a soft drink, it doesn’t go in a fridge it goes in a cupboard. The IRN BRU you tasted is the normal one, then there is no sugar and then there is extra.
Irn Bru doesn't taste the same now they have had to reduce the sugar content but it's still my go to drink. My gran told me when i was younger that dandelion & burdock was made from fermented dandelions and burdock roots i don't think i have drank it since.
IrnBru is termed in Scotland where it originates from as our other national drink, Scotch whisky being the first. In Scotland it outsells all other soft drinks including Coke, I believe the only country where Coke is not the top soft drink.
It's not easy to find here. Some showed up in one of our stores and Ross is kicking himself for not buying some. It disappeared and hasn't reappeared since!
here in manchester there is a apartment complex called vimto gardens in honor of the drink and i once read a story that someone rigged their water supply to a small silo that made the taps pour out vimto, only in the uk!!! lol
I love Fentimans ginger beer. I live in Bournemouth in the UK and we have it everywhere here in restaurants and in supermarkets. I also love iron bru, vimto and Ribena. However still vimto in the concentrated kind is better. I don't drink much dandelion and burdock however I do like it. Dandilion and Burdock is not the most popular drink in the UK though. The most popular are definitely the first 3 in our household and proberly most others and the vimto out of what you've picked out. However, they aren't drinks we would have on a daily basis personally. Other households may differ. It's just our personal choice as we try and cut down on the sugar content! These drinks are what we would personally have as a treat for us to be honest. The still vimto is probably the most popular on a daily basis for us though if we had to pick one as we prefer it to the ribena. My fiancé and I love Orange Lucozade though and believe it or not - his most favourite drink in the world is American MTN dew too ( which is his favourite treat!).
Ross would completely agree with your fiancé - he loves Mountain Dew! He loves Irn Bru too, but so hard to find here. We saw that Fentiman's also makes a dandelion and burdock drink though we haven't seen it here.
I usually buy the Sugar Free version of Barrs Irn Bru. Some soft drink makers don't really do a particularly good version when it comes to their low-calorie style but Barrs do a pretty good job.🤝
Irn Bru only comes in the one flavour, and nobody's sure what it is! In fact their latest commercial depicts a brawl where everybody claims it is a different flavour! I think sherbet is a pretty good description, though. Not a fan of the fizzy Vimto myself. It's more common on a concentrate similar to the Ribena, and I much prefer it that way than the fizzy version.
I'm in Sheffield, South Yorkshire and I love ribera, they also do strawberry flavour, irn bru is too sweet for me, like ginger beer but not heard of the brand. Never tried dandelion and burdock.
I believe Irn Bru contains quinine, same as tonic water. Is a gin and tonic a common drink over there? Good to prevent malaria. Great selection of drinks though, vimto is my all time favourite. Nice vid 👍
Thank you! Oh yes, gin and tonics are common. It was a common 'oh, Uncle Don and Aunt Gayle must be over, the gin and tonic bottles are out.' type drink
Fentimans are more famous for tonic water & alcohol mixers, a more upmarket brand but are available in most supermarkets. Scotland is (or was) the only country in the world where Coca-Cola isn’t the No1 soft drink it’s Irn Bru
Ribena is full of sugar so I just get the Tesco’s own sugar free version. I do like dandy. I don’t get it often but I might grab some next time I go food shopping.
Since the so-called 'sugar tax' in Britain, companies either reduce the sugar amount or pay the tax. Guess which one most companies went for? The problem is that in going for the first, artificial sweeteners were added, and these, for some people, cause diarrhoea. A message on the can/bottle is required to indicate this.
The Vimto cans and bottles are aimed at small children. They purposefully watered it down so they don't give kids teeth problems. Much better as a concentrate, you can make it stronger. Since they took most of the sugar out, I don't like it as much.
Irn-Bru is a mix of tutti frutti and bubble gum I stay close to the factory in Cumbernauld Glasgow Scotland were it's made the company is called barrs they make other soft drinks like red coke ginger beer cherry bubble gum lime orange but irn bru is the top selling drink here in Scotland out selling Coca-Cola the only place in the full world that out sells them but irn bru they have tryd to make different flavours but they didn't work so they stopped making and you now only get this one ☺️
Irn Bru comes in one flavour but finn tried it first in 1988 which would be the original Irn Bru with sugar , Since 2018 it has become made with sweeteners because of the sugar tax that the government implemented in 2018 to combat obesity .
I don't know if it's just the camera but that Ribena actually looks the colour of Ribena past its best before date. Should look a much deeper purple colour.
An after thought after I watched your fish and chip video and spotted Tina having a pint o lager ! the next time your having a pint of lager try tipping in about half an inch of ribena/blackurrant squash ! its a whole other drink and makes it way more refreshing
Americans taste things very differently. There is no citrus in Irn Bru and no liquorice in dandelion and burdock. Dandelion and burdock is a Welsh drink and when I was growing up in the 70s and 80s, it was not widely available in England, but my Welsh Gran always had several bottles of it waiting for us on our visits. It is made with the actual herbs and has medicinal qualities. My Gran always claimed it would cure an upset stomach and it seemed to work.
Would be curious to try other versions of the dandelion and burdock drink. Some recipes I saw online have star anise as an ingredient which maybe they are trying to capture in the Ben Shaws version? That would account for the "liquorice" flavor. www.handmadeapothecary.co.uk/blog/2016/8/9/summer-cocktails-cordials-dandelion-burdock Another viewer shared a funny Irn Bru commercial showing how people can't agree on the taste! Yes we do! A&W is probably the most well known brand, but there are many companies that make cream soda here. We plan to do an American specialty sodas video in the future and will be trying a cream soda.
The Vimto we tried in the can was very light in flavor. We found Vimto cordial in a Middle Eastern store and it had writing in Arabic I believe. the flavor reminds me a lot of Dr. Pepper. I'm not sure if this version tastes the same as the cordial in the UK.

You used to be able to get a standard 2 lt bottle of original/red Coca-Cola here, some shops you could get 3lt bottles and would pay £3 for two 3lt bottles. Now the largest in normal stores the largest bottles are either 1.50lt or 1.75lt for the same price as it used to be for 2lts.
You can still get 3lt bottles of Diet Coke and Zero in some stores, and the largest Red Coke they sell is 2.25 lts for the same price as Diet 3lt bottle. They are determined to cut sugar and salt out of our diets.
Sweet and salty food and drinks are banned on kids TV channels and are not allowed to be shown before a certain time.
When I was a kid, Kool Aid was a powder mix and you did add sugar to it. No nutritional value! My mom didn't let me have it. :) We do have frozen juice concentrates like for orange and other juices, but those make a pitcher of juice at a time. There has been talk of a sugar/soda tax here, but so far I don't think it has gone anywhere.
I think we will mix ours a little stronger next time and see how it tastes.
It's been around a lot longer than 40 years. I remember it in my childhood in the early 70s.
They have some interesting flavors. We picked up a few new flavors to try.
Although the label on Ribena suggests 4 to 1, it's really a matter of taste of how strong you like it. It's great in winter because it contains massive
amounts of Vitamin C (more than OJ). Vimto has been around a very long time. Another secret recipe (like Irn-Bru), it's basically a mix of fruits.
Ginger beer is the oldest of all and we've enjoyed it (sometimes mixed with beer) for hundreds of years.........................the ancient Englishman.
i freeze from the bottle, they geat as icecubes in a nice cold tea
That's good to know about adjusting the strength of Ribena. I was thinking about trying that as I think I'd like a bit stronger flavor.
@@FinnLovesFood it should say "dilute to taste" but they try and squeeze more glasses out of it to look better lol
@@MacStoker ya, I think we will add more concentrate next time!
Too bad we couldn't have tasted the originals.
@@steveashton4042 how interesting! That does sound like the ice cream trucks here.
I love Dandelion & Burdock which I missed so much when I was living in the States until I found Root beer. My friends stateside love Vimto and Ribena squash, the later being great when you are suffering from a cold just mix with boiling water instead.
Dandelion and Burdock is hard to find here. Glad you discovered root beer!
The thing with squash (what we call concentrated fruit drinks like orange and Ribena) you make the strength to your taste, so try lots of different strengths to find your preference.
We did find that we really liked the Ribena with a bit more strength.
Love dandelion and burdock
Ginger beer goes well with whisky 😋
Not sure about that, but dry ginger is excellent with whisky!
Whisky should never be mixed...🙄
Thank you! We’ve been mixing the Ribena cordial with less water and like it better. Really enjoy it with sparkling water.
Fentiman's Curiosity Cola and Ginger Beer both contain less than 0.5% alcohol.
I used to work with a guy on a building site, who started bringing bottles of ginger beer to work instead of irn bru. He used to leave his irn bru lying about and everyone would drink it. Nobody touched his ginger beer 😂
I'd snag the Irn Bru too!
I would drink it 2 lol
Ribena is good for making frozen lollipops... or having it with hot water in winter months... also good in fruit punch bowls...
iron brew is a unique taste but not so popular as Coca-Cola or lemonade but iron brew gives a better taste when its in a can, in a bottle you miss part of the flavor of the can it also costs 0.79p for a litre bottle where i am, 4 dollars you paying for the postage as well
ginger ale is only drank by old folk these days in the UK
dandelion and burdock is one of the oldest sodas in the UK traditionally it was made from fermented dandelion (taraxacum officinale) and burdock (arctium lappa) roots hence the name
vimto to me is the soda version of ribena...
Dang beat me to it lol, I was about to make a comment about having it hot also like a fruity tea, It really is a versatile thing
That is interesting that Irn Bru can taste better in a can. We'll have to try it again if we run across the canned version. Do you ever put sparkling water in Ribena? I was thinking that could make it like a soda.
ribena icecups are amazing
Thanks for the tip!
You need to to try Lucazade and lilt. Lilt is one of my favourites. :)
I think we saw those at our local British shop. We may need to do a "part 2!"
And Rio. Rio is SO good
im from scotland and irn bru is huge here! the number 1 soft drink!! an ice cold irn bru is great for a hangover
Irn Bru the world's best cure for a hangover
For Ribena should can uses as much as you want for your own drink in the uk we make it different strengths to what you like. And iron brew comes in one flavour and it’s from Scotland and the price of two litres of iron brew in the uk is £2.00 pounds
After some experimenting, I found the strength of Ribena I like! Just wish it was more widely available here. It's also expensive like Irn Bru!
I had a friend in the early 90s who could get slightly high on Dandelion and Burdock, literally 3 cans and he was borderline drunk and yet no harmful effects and no hangover - you have no idea how much I envied him!
Oh wow!
The clocks go back one hour this weekend on Sunday morning 30/10/2022, normally it would be getting a lot colder, but this year has been exceptional with record temperatures of 40C in some places, even now it's 18/20 C whereas normally we would be getting frost, no need for hot Ribena, Ginger Ale you would have with Whiskey/Whisky

Elderflower cordial Tizer. Lucozade orange. Robinsons Lemon. (Barley) Robinsons orange always available at Wimbledon Tennis !! Sprite Mountain Dew ( sold on US Bases now all over !)

It's nice to be able to adjust the strength. I'm finding I like it a bit stronger.
Ribena you have to typically dilute it stronger compared to other brands because it's not naturally as strong as other cordial and squash brands it's just the name that helps it sell really. There's also a strawberry flavour one.
I've been making it a bit stronger and enjoy it more.

Ribera is my favourite, also try it with hot water, especially if unwell.
Also Lucozade is great, another drink was given if unwell as a child. (Lucozade Aids recovery).
We picked up some Lucozade to try in a future video!
There's an antiseptic ointment available in the UK called 'germoline' and the smell of germoline is EXACTLY the same as the flavour of Root Beer, so it's no surprise that few Brits enjoy root beer!
That makes sense!
Sorry I'm laughing, but I'm glad your wife like dandelion and burdock, it's not for everyone but I love it. It's got health benefits too.
Definitely fun to try these "new to us" drink flavors.
When I was a kid we had Ribena in milk.Ribena also do Pineapple and passion fruit , Strawberry , raspberry and rhubarb + Blackcurrant Carbonated and Raspberry carbonated in the UK
All of those flavors sound really good.
Fentimans is very old fashioned, its a brand associated with traditionally brewed drinks. Carbonated via brewing rather than infusion.
We have enjoyed the Fentiman's drinks we've tried.
My favourites are
Ribena
Irn Bru
Dandelion & Burdock
VIimto (fizzy and squash)
Ginger beer (hate it)
Ribena is also good made with warm water when you have a cold, so comforting. Also good in milk as a milkshake.
Great choices!
Fentiman's is based in the town of Hexham [ up the Tyne valley from Newcastle] in Northumberland.
Try hot water with Ribena.
You can put a good ginger cordial in a lager and have a good ginger beer.

Fentimans is probably what you would consider somewhat of a craft brand, rather than mainstream like Coca-Cola and PepsiCo.
We're starting to see Fentiman's pop up in a few different shops around here, though the best selection we've seen is at Cost Plus World Market.
I enjoy a Cheeky Vimto: one shot of port topped up with a WKD Blue. I'm not sure if you get WKD over the pond.
Gin and ginger beer is a great combo
Irn Bru is a great hangover drink.
All the drinks you tried are very common throughout the uk
I don't think we've seen WKD here.
As an American, Irn Bru tastes like cream soda but less sweet or watered-down.
I work virtually next door to the Irn-Brew factory, near Glasgow. All you see all day, is a constant stream of Irn-Brew logo'd trucks coming and going, all with the slogan 'THE BRU MUST GET THROUGH' down the side..
That is great! We've watched some Irn-Bru ads on TH-cam and got quite a laugh out of them.
Try irn bru with vodka. Ribena with lemonade, well chilled of course is great. We also have an alcoholic ginger beer here called Crabbie's. Its great.
Sound like interesting combinations!
Thank you, I' could have sworn I've seen Crabbie's ginger beer at one of our local shops, I'll definitely keep an eye open for it now.
Ribena a very healthy fruit drink.
Xx
Do you prefer the old Irn Bru to the reduced sugar formula? I'm hooked on Ribena!
Well done for actually putting the drinks in the fridge. I see too many videos where people are trying the drinks at room temperature. You never get the true flavour unless they are refrigerated
That is interesting. About the only thing I drink room temperature is water and even that I prefer chilled!
Ribena is a cordial not a soft drink, it doesn’t go in a fridge it goes in a cupboard. The IRN BRU you tasted is the normal one, then there is no sugar and then there is extra.
We must have different definitions! Here, a cordial is alcoholic (liquer) while soft drinks are non-alcoholic.
Irn Bru doesn't taste the same now they have had to reduce the sugar content but it's still my go to drink.
My gran told me when i was younger that dandelion & burdock was made from fermented dandelions and burdock roots i don't think i have drank it since.
I can imagine that would scare off a child!
@@FinnLovesFood Cannae believe they charged Ross $4 dollars for that bottle. That’s shocking!
Vimto is from Manchester northern England
here in manchester there is a apartment complex called vimto gardens in honor of the drink and i once read a story that someone rigged their water supply to a small silo that made the taps pour out vimto, only in the uk!!! lol
That's funny!
Low calorie versions often aren't great. Good to hear they do it right!
iron bru a good mixer with whiskey
Irn Bru only comes in the one flavour, and nobody's sure what it is! In fact their latest commercial depicts a brawl where everybody claims it is a different flavour!
I think sherbet is a pretty good description, though.
Not a fan of the fizzy Vimto myself. It's more common on a concentrate similar to the Ribena, and I much prefer it that way than the fizzy version.

Irn bru is my favourite. Was even better before the changes though. Pepsi Max Cherry is my other favourite fizzy drink
Definitely enjoy cherry flavored colas.

That would account for the "liquorice" flavor. www.handmadeapothecary.co.uk/blog/2016/8/9/summer-cocktails-cordials-dandelion-burdock

Do you have Cream soda in usa
Yes we do! A&W is probably the most well known brand, but there are many companies that make cream soda here. We plan to do an American specialty sodas video in the future and will be trying a cream soda.
If you like ribera then you'll love Vimto juice the drink of Manchester in my opinion.
The Vimto we tried in the can was very light in flavor. We found Vimto cordial in a Middle Eastern store and it had writing in Arabic I believe. the flavor reminds me a lot of Dr. Pepper. I'm not sure if this version tastes the same as the cordial in the UK.
In my experience drinks in other countries do taste different, kind of reminds me of snickers and if I had to pick between US or UK I'm sorry but UK snickers are just just so much better in every way.
