Bitter shandy is only for school kids to drink on the way home from school and pretend like they are grown up, unless you grew up with that it would be odd. But do try a lager or bitter top - about 3/4 pint of lemonade topped off with beer, soooo good on a hot day when you cant **actually** have a beer but really want one
The shandy you can get in supermarkets is officially a soft drink - it has a low enough alcohol content that there is no age restrictions on sale or consumption of it. A shandy bought in a pub is usually half beer, half lemonade, and therefore can NOT be sold to minors...
Fizzy Ribena is nice when you can get it. Dandelion and Burdock is odd, as usually you get synthetic versions of it, when the plants grow everywhere. Burdock leaves are great on nettle stings!

Pop Shop in Ontario use to carry dandelion and burdock. It is a more bitter version of rootbeer and similar to birchbeer. Burdock is the plant that burrs, the small round balls that hitch a ride on your sweater as you walk through a forest glade.

So funny. Decided to follow in your footsteps and try one new item every time I go in a shop. Bought four cans call street drinks. They were disgusting lol

For the record, Dandelion and Burdock are two wild plants that grow in the countryside. Both have slightly medicinal qualities and the traditional D+B , which was widely available long before the artificial crap sold in supermarkets etc, had a lovely, unique taste and flavour that I'm sure you would really like. Try and find a shop that sells a more traditional make.
Dandelion 'coffee' (also dandelion tea) is a tisane made from the root of the dandelion plant. The roasted dandelion root pieces and the beverage have some resemblance to coffee in appearance and taste, and it is thus commonly considered a coffee substitute. Dandelion root is used for both medicinal and culinary purposes and is thought to be a detoxifying herb.
I like the fact Dandelion and Burdock was recommended to you! Nice... hehehe I'm gonna go and get a Vimto cause I don't believe I've ever tasted one that taste like cream soda?? I thought it was exactly what it said on the bottle??? Maybe your taste buds were ruined the previous sampling haha
Dandelion and Burdock is exactly what its called on the tin. Made from Dandelion and burdock roots. Rubicon from Barrs, you need their irn bru, pineappleade and real cream soda etc.
From Wikipedia: "Dandelion and burdock is a beverage consumed in the British Isles since the Middle Ages. It was originally a type of light mead, but over the years has evolved into the carbonated soft drink commercially available today. Traditionally it was made from fermented dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) and burdock (Arctium lappa) roots, hence the name. The "dandelion and burdock" drink for sale in many retail outlets rarely contains either plant."
D&B is a root beer. Also, the fancy root beer they sell here, Bundaberg or whatever it is, says the roots involved include licorice root, as well as vanilla and sasparilla and another one I forget. So there was reason to think you might like D&B.
There used to be so many awesome soft drinks. Nanny state is worried about people who can't control themselves though, so those of us who eat/drink sensibly can no longer enjoy our favourite drinks. My absolute favourite was mixed fruit Kia-Ora. A chilled glass of that on a hot day was like heaven.
Normally we say Petrol or Diesel as Gas is a Gas (the lightest of the hydro-carbons). We use Gas for our cooking. (Cooking with Gas). Dandelion and Burdock is most similar in flavour to sarsaparilla!
Dandelion and Burdock is my favourite as long as its a good brand. not the cheap supermarket stuff. Both that Asda and the Morrisons version almost certainly come from the same factory they just label them for each supermarket. Dandelion and Burdock are both plants, the real stuff is supposed to have health benefits.
I was waiting for you to try Dandelion & Burdock - it’s the sort of mistake you only ever make once! Love the reactions though, I’m sure there are many more foul British drinks & foods for you to try...
Alanna, back in the 1950s, early sixties, before "Coca Cola" arrived and the days before "Sugar Free" and supermarket "Own Brands", even before supermarkets arived, my drink of choice was Dandelion & Burdock followed by "Cream Soda". A proper Bitter Shandy is 50% British Bitter Beer. a medium yellow colour, and 50% clear Lemonade. A lovely refreshing drink on one of our few hot, sunny days. Lol. Best regards, Alan.
Hi, Alanna, another very entertaining video. It's great watching your face when you try things, it's very expressive. I must say I don't envy you any of the ones you tried. I think your next tasting video should be on wine.
Dear Alanna, If you want to do some beer reviews in the future, please do not forget to include black beers aka stouts. Murphy’s Irish Stout (brewed in Edinburgh) is one of my favourites and I am drinking it now. Cheers, John
Those sweeteners are disgusting, nasty aftertaste and if I drink too much they always give me a headache. Soft drinks have been ruined. BRING BACK SUGAR!!
Used to love Dandelion & Burdock, Vimto and Tizer when I was very young, preschool age. My Granddad used to take me to a local shop where they sold Vimto as a drink and ice lollies, was my favorite. Dandelion & Burdock I have had down South doesn't taste as I remember it, used to taste similar to Sarsaparilla. Safrole one of the original flavourings was found to be carcinogenic in the 60's and is no longer used, all the flavourings are now artificial.
And this is exactly why as a Brit, I drink diet coke and A&W root beer when I can get it. Other commenters have a point though. I love diet coke but I can't abide the supermarket own branded version of soft drinks, especially the cola. The exception is the Aldi knock off version of Lilt. That stuff is nice. I put a little pure orange juice in a glass and then top that up with the fake Lilt. It makes a really nice drink.
A real Dandelion and Burdock drink was traditionally brewed from the roots of dandelions and burdocks (another plant). There are some good traditional versions available - judging by a cheap supermarket version is like judging coca cola by trying a 50p own brand cola from Tesco.
I love Dandelion & Burdock. Dandelion is a Dandelion. Burdock is a root. Traditionally the drink would have been brewed from them. Today its probably artificial.
Arctium lappa, commonly called greater burdock, gobō (牛蒡/ゴボウ), edible burdock, lappa, beggar's buttons, thorny burr, or happy major is a Eurasian species of plants in the Aster family, cultivated in gardens for its root used as a vegetable. It has become an invasive weed of high-nitrogen soils in North America, Australia, and other regions.
I've always enjoyed Shandy drinks. But I always thought it was beer mixed with ginger ale. After a cursory internet search, I now know that I enjoy ginger shandys and the ones from GB are often called lemon shandys.
Yeah pretty much all those drinks people don't really buy. And shandies have to be got from pubs to really be worth it, I suppose some of the lager shandies can be okay from a can but its honestly better to mix lemonade and beer yourself.
I agree with another user. Fentiman makes the most amazing drinks: Apple and Blackberry Sparkling Raspberry Rose lemonade Mandarin & Seville Orange Jigger (basically orange with a hint of ginger) My personal favourite. Pink Ginger (exclusively sold at Sainsbury's) Also Purdey's Edge Multivitamin Natural Energy Drink is nice if you like drinks sharp in taste.
Great video! I used to like Vimto and thought it tasted better than Ribena, but then I discovered Blackcurrant and Apple which trounces both Vimto and Ribena. Blackcurrant and Apple is a cordial which you dilute with lots of water. The in store brands are all fairly good, you might want to try it.

Very funny, great episode!
the best tastings yet!!!
Funny video Alanna, great stuff 😄
hahahaha... I love your random scoring scales!
... has anyone actually had an energy drink and been like "mmmm, damn that's lush, give me more... "
2:52 *starts having a stroke* "I mean, it's not bad..." *continues having stroke*
Those sweeteners are disgusting, nasty aftertaste and if I drink too much they always give me a headache. Soft drinks have been ruined. BRING BACK SUGAR!!
Dandelion and burdock is delicious! I thought you'd love it.
Ikr
Was that a mistake at 6:19, the kind of mistake you thought wouldn't be noticed & so therefore doesn't count? 😅
Wow, hadn't noticed that-maybe she was thinking of spotted dick & got confused.
I give this video 8 anguished Alanna's out of 9. Great video and plenty more untapped potential in the same vein.
you sure know how to pick the worst flavors in the world but my hats off to you for trying them all
No they're weird to us too. Loving the videos.
Dear Alanna, Brilliant video as usual. 2 thumbs up from me. Cheers, John
Ha ha. Love your facial expressions after every drink😂
I've always enjoyed Shandy drinks. But I always thought it was beer mixed with ginger ale. After a cursory internet search, I now know that I enjoy ginger shandys and the ones from GB are often called lemon shandys.
Supermarket branded products are usually awful. Bass shandy is nice
Vimto is nothing like cream soda.. what are you talking about?
Its no surprise that these are not the most popular drinks in UK. Still, your disgust is very amusing.
Yeah pretty much all those drinks people don't really buy. And shandies have to be got from pubs to really be worth it, I suppose some of the lager shandies can be okay from a can but its honestly better to mix lemonade and beer yourself.
I agree with another user. Fentiman makes the most amazing drinks:
Apple and Blackberry
Sparkling Raspberry
Rose lemonade
Mandarin & Seville Orange Jigger (basically orange with a hint of ginger) My personal favourite.
Pink Ginger (exclusively sold at Sainsbury's)
Also Purdey's Edge Multivitamin Natural Energy Drink is nice if you like drinks sharp in taste.
