Well, you did it. Well done. I didn't know about ready-mixed Ribena, after 40-odd years in Sweden. We had Ribena cordial that you mixed with water to taste. Lucozade was something people brought with them to people in hospital 😊 Fun fact - my maternal greatgrandfather and his brother started a soft drinks company based out of Kettering in the Midlands called "Cooke's Pop" It went bust in the 1970's unfortunately due to bad management and my mum never forgave them. She used to ride on the horse-drawn cart when she was a child (she was born in 1910) when her father or someone delivered the crates to the local pubs. You guys have lucozade and ribena? Lucozade was always available in chemists, but not anymore. Remember my parents got me bottle when I had a stomach bug aged about five. Surprised me as they didn't let me drink soft drinks normally. I was loving it!

@@pjdunnit6753I see Lucozade all the time in my local chemist. Guess it's down to whom ever does the stock purchase for the shop and whether or not there's a demand for it.
Welcome to blackcurrant! That’s the interesting flavour you can taste in vimto and ribena. You’ll quite often find a north/south divide, southerners tend to prefer ribena, northerners love vimto! There are exceptions, but vimto is better. And we typically buy large bottles of concentrated squash and dilute at home with tap water to taste.
my mum was a vimto addict. she had been hooked on energy drinks until she was told by the hospital to quit them because they were wrecking her body. so she switched to vimto and never looked back.
Dandelion and burdock is my favourite. The flavour comes from dandelion and burdock. It's basically a herbal remedy. My Gran taught me to drink it for stomach upsets.
dandelion and burdock are both weeds that grow all over the UK, they use the dandelion plant and the burdock root. It was first developed as a medicinal tonic. Ben Shaws definately still uses the plants for flavouring never tried the other version.
I will say as a diabetic i appreciate less sugar. Also thank you for the laugh at the end. Am nursing a ruptured ligament in my foot, and i was laughing with you. Laughter IS the best medicine. Thanks guys. Nana Karen Forest of Dean UK
You probably haven’t had anything blackcurrant. Most of your grape flavoured things will be blackcurrant flavoured for us. The Blackcurrant plant is considered an invasive species in the US, so it can't be grown (not sure if this has changed now).
It has, it's up to the individual states today. As a matter of interest, Crème de cassis has always been available over there. Other than during prohibition!
Not so much 'invasive' (like knotweed) but because blackcurrants were a host to white pine blister rust fungus so they were banned til 1966 to protect the lumber industry. The ban was lifted due to development of resistant species, fungicides and distancing between white pines and blackcurrants prevented the spread of the fungus. Some states still have their own ban though.
Lovely to see you both having so much fun today! Dandelion and Burdock drinks ARE made with dandelion and burdock plants. That's what the flavour is.... Ribena does come in a few flavours, but the OG Blackcurrant is by far the most common, and if someone offered you a Ribena you'd assume they meant Blackcurrant. It used to be very popular as a good source of vitamin C for kids, before fresh fruit juices were as readily available as they are now. When we were ill as kids Mum would give us a ribena made with hot water for comfort and to aid recovery. (The bottles we had were what we call 'squash' which is a syrupy cordial you have to dilute to drink- not the premixed version you have there)
Dandelion and Burdock is made from the plants, it says on the can its made from botanicals. We have laws that state you cannot state falsehoods on foodstuffs. So they are using the same plants now as they used in the middle ages and possibly before that. I believe it was the inspiration for American Root beer. We have Ribena squash which is a cordial to which you add water, in the winter we often make it with hot water, its so warming on a chilly winters day. Sadly you were sent cheap cans of Barrs pop, we buy Fentimans bottles of Curiosity Cola, cream soda, ginger beer, etc etc. More expensive but well worth the extra ❤
Lucazade (the original which was in a glass bottle) was always what we had as kids when sick and unwell. I have very severe migraines that last for days and lucazade (albeit the sports versions rather than the fizzy) are still my go to as I find that they help with rehydration and recovery.
Thanks for sharing about it helping with your migraine recovery. I struggle with migraines myself so will look into getting some for when I next get a migraine.
@@Loulizabeth yvw x I will say, any isotonic sports or rehydration drink can be very helpful, especially if you have gastric associated symptoms with migraines. Hopefully you may find that they help you too.
Me too! I’ve had migraines since I was a child, still get them now. My parents would always buy me a glass bottle of lucozade and it always helped! I still drink it now and the sports version and they help a lot!!
Dandelion and burdock is flavoured with dandelion and burdock - dandelion is obviously the yellow flower, and burdock is a root that grows from those big-leaved plants that grow next to stinging nettles
I used to get a can of shandy sometimes from the local shop after upper school, I felt so naughty and grown up. Cause they would sell it to me. But once I read how much alcohol was it in and it’s not much at all 😂😂😂
In the UK as children we used to love Cream Soda with a great lump of ice cream in it. Tizer comes from appetizer, obviously. The recent sugar tax rules have a bit spoiled the taste of many drinks, as you say leaving an unpleasant aftertaste. We call all such drinks 'POP', cola or coke we specify it as cola, we are specific. We cannot call every carbonated drink 'cola' when it is not. Dandilion & Burdock really is flavoured with these plants, otherwise it would be something else. Ribenna is mostly given to infants, like many juices is is usually concentrated & needs to be dilute with water to taste. It is made from Blackcurrants, which is one of the favourite flavours in the UK, not available in the US. Lucozade has always been a energy drink given to people in hospital or when they are ill. It is not taken as a regular pop drink. It tends to be very sweet. The regular flavour is orange. Regular 'pop' is Lemonade, which you would call sprite, because it is not like American lemonade. To find American style lemonade in the UK you would look for 'cloudy' lemonade. Beside these processed pops, the UK has many types of 'juices', cordial fruit drinks which are concentrated & need to be diluted with water to the strength preferred by each person. Robinson's Lemon fruit cordial has been a regular favourite at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships for years. You pore an inch or so into a glass & top up with water to the strength you like. It can also be made in jugs (pitchers) for several people to share. This means a litre bottle can make many drinks, or can be kept in the fridge for a long time. You clearly haven't yet got the British habit of once opened a packet of biscuits are pretty much consumed at one go. We find it hard to put the packet down once opened until all the biscuits are gone. Hardly anyone would put aside any chocolate bar after starting it, but usually eat it all at one go, however big. When enjoying our favourite goodies we never worry about calories or sugar content etc we just enjoy. Most of the drinks you tried here are not the regular flavours but the newer experimental versions, which are rarely as good as the original. Sugar rush? what on earth are you talking about, I've never known any such thing in my life, & I love my sweet treats, & have lived a very long time. I think you've been taken in by a load of stupid propaganda, which is weird in a nation that permits so much crap in it's food.
I cannot abide orange flavoured Lucozade but love Lucozade Original (which is definitely _not_ orange flavoured!! Also, I don't know what makes you think Ribena is given mostly to babies?!! It's just a tasty blackcurrant drink - and if you've ever watched JPS Reacts (he's a young American man who has holidayed in the UK and in Germany) & he loves Ribena - but nobody told him it's meant to be diluted and he drank it straight from the squash bottle _undiluted_ but loved it - straight!!😮😮😮
R Whites cream soda was always the best, followed a close second by Corona cream soda. That was in the days before the dreaded sweeteners arrived when drinks were just made with sugar. Same with Tizer, the original just made with sugar was delicious unlike the abomination they pass of as Tizer today.
Vimto squash with ice on a hot summers day is my fave. Pink gin and cream soda in my best mates garden having a good natter is is also a fun activity lol.
Ribena is god tier. Also you can get vimto comcentrate, we call it cordial in fhe uk, where you mix it with water so you can make it as strong or weak as you like. Vimto is nice hot too.

Love Tizer. Hard to come by now , seems to only be found in some "corner shops". Reminds me of my grandma, she would always have the glass bottles of it dropped off by the milkman. Can't get it in glass bottles anymore, just cans and plastic bottles. I used to live about 3 miles from one of Barr factories that made it thats since shut down, so back then Barr stuff was plentiful in all stores. Majority of Barr stuff is pretty much sugar free now because of the sugar tax
@@ianmerkin6488 definitely not. I'd have guessed a lemonade or some sort of root based drink. Schweppes has a Royal Warrant, it says on the bottle aswell as founded in the 1800s. That's gotta be one of the oldest
Lucozade, was the original electrolyte drink that everyone gave to you when you wasn’t feeling well or in hospital and it was only one flavour with orange cellophane twisted around the bottle
Robinsons squash is so good. The British dental association recommends squash as the next best alternative after water and milk, therefore for those of you who find water boring, Robinsons squash is a great way to add flavour.
Hello bpth. I am not a tea or coffee drinker. So, I drink loads of soda’s and because of my health mostly the zero calorie, zero sugar varieties. I am getting old! When I was a kid, in the 50’s & 60’s our biggest soda seller was Corona. To get Pop, as we called it, we had to wait for the weekly “pop man” to call, deliver the pop and take away the refundable empties. For us the favourite flavours were American Cream Soda, Dandelion & Burdock, Orangeade, Lemonade. Coke was not around my area then. In Cardiff there was a shop that made their own Sarsaparilla and lemonade, and they were great. Sarsaparilla was a drink often sold as a beer substitute in the tee-total bars when religions decided to ban “the evil alcohol”. For a hot drink my mum used to use boiling water to dilute Ribena, often in a Thermos flask to take to school in the winter. I imagine Ribena is a new taste for you and all fellow Americans. Blackcurrants had been banned for years in the US. We get blackcurrant sweets/candy, blackcurrant pies, pies and crumbles, you don't know what you are missing!
My dad was a milkman for years, then he was a pop man haha 😂!! Oh that takes me back to when I was little! I’ve got a picture of me on the back of him lemonade truck!!
I live in London and do heavy construction work, when the days are very busy I take a bottle of Ribena concentrate and it helps me drink lots of water there are days when I drink even 8or 9 litres of water in my work shift so a warm greeting from the UK
Ribena was always served hot when sick when growing up. It either sold as a squash at home that you dilute or the cartons for little kids, finally the bottles from the corner shop on the go
Ribena have branched out with different flavours, including strawberry and passion fruit & pineapple. Ribena was originally a concentrated cordial that you add water to, it is also often drunk as a hot drink. Lucozade was originally marketed as a drink to help recuperating people who have been ill. Vimto has grape, raspberry & blackcurrant juices. Tizer is described as a citrus and red fruit blend.
Ribena comes in other flavours (strawberry at least) but blackcurrant is the original and the best. If someone says Ribena they probably mean the blackcurrant version. Blackcurrant is such a normal flavour here and unheard of there. Irn-Bru, Tizer & Vimto are like an unholy trinity of awesome weird British soft drinks. My recommendations for Lucozade: Drink original when you're ill. Drink sport orange, fizzy or still when you're not ill.
You can also get Vimto Cordial which is a Diluting Concentrate that you add water too, also a lot of the Ribena products are also Cordials which you add water too. Tizer used to be advertised as The Red One.
Vimto was originally made in Manchester UK,and is very popular more in the north of England. We grew up with both vimto and rihbeana as a syrup that you added water to. Love that your tasting some of my favorite childhood, and adult drinks. Enjoy.
Btw the dandelion and burdocks both have real dandelion and burdock in them. These typically do have star anise added to them which is probably why you could taste liquorice
What a double act - this has been one of the funniest and entertaining clips you have produced. Very watchable - well done. I wonder if you both have ever tried the TANGO range of soft drinks. They are particularly known for their carbonated Orange drink although they do Apple, Dark Berry, Passion Fruit. If you are lucky enough to come by the cherry flavoured Tango drink you are really in for a treat. Carotene, derived naturally from carrots is ofen used as a colouring in our drinks adding a boost of brightness and Vitamins A and C at the same time. Cheers and Love to you all from across the pond.
Great video, lovely to see you both having fun. My personal favourite fizzy drinks are Fentimans dandelion and burdock, J20 Spritz Apple & Watermelon, and Apple & Elderflower. I don't usually like elderflower flavour but J20 has a great balance that I really like. I prefer dandelion & burdock in the winter and the other two in the summer. I also like the Robinsons mint cordial, which I think you've tried, I tend to have a tiny amount so it's more like flavoured water.
Lilt is good if you want to try a slightly different flavour. It’s been taken over by Fanta now, but I think the flavour is still the same. Levi Root’s Caribbean Crush was also good too if you can still get it. Someone also mentioned Rubicon and I second that, mango is delicious but guava is my favourite! :)
Immediate disclaimer on behalf of all Brits. Just about every soft drink in the UK has been ruined by the forced inclusion of artificial sweeteners, due to our silly Government putting an excessive sugar tax on all soft drinks to combat obesity. What you're sampling here is inferior artificially sweetened versions of once great drinks.
The manufacturers could still produce the sugar versions of these drinks but it’s cheaper to produce one. Now we all have no choice but to drink the nasty, harmful artificial sweeteners
@@ScottM7209Meh, I have to disagree. It's been proven that artificial sweeteners are terrible for gut health, and that our bodies adapt to convert sweeteners into sugars which will cause obesity further down the line.
@@ScottM7209yes I remember giving up sugar in hot drinks years ago. Tasted terrible at first. Now tastes terrible with sugar. I can't even drink fizzy drinks these days, they all taste sickly sweet.
They need to do something similar in America. Even when our drinks were full sugar, they were nowhere near as sweet as Americas drinks. They're undrinkable
Dandelion and burdock root is as traditional as you can get. I knew avretired teacher who used to make this. It is really good made the traditional way. She was born in 1920. We don't do much grape juice instead we love blackcurrant flavour.
In Scotland I often hear folks refer to some of these drinks as 'squash' ! They keep the undiluted and bigger versions on their counters and just make it up adding water when they want a dtink. First time I tried it (as a Canadian) I couldnt believe how much water was needed to make it to my taste.lol. LUV your vids!
Shandy Bass deserves a mention. Made with real beer...0.5. Police have been ordered to not drink it while on duty, just incase there's enough of a whiff of booze in their breath 😂
@jkasaunder228 oh i didn't know that. I'm amazed how different our drinks are to American ones. I was shocked to see they don't have blackcurrant drinks.
@@jeepsthetimebandit That's why they have alot more grape flavour soft drinks. Blackcurrants are an invasive species to America, and you know how quickly they grow here! It could decimate certain other trees and plants too. At one point, I believe even importing manufactured black currant drinks and such was a big no no. Seems they've relaxed a bit.
@jkasaunder228 WOW! I didn't know that either! I always thought they grew naturally over there as well. I wondered why it wasn't used as a drink. I thought (nieve, I know) that it wasn't a favourite flavour, so they just didn't make it 😅 You're like a quiz master! So are blackberries native just to the UK?
One thing I’d like to add. Since the sugar tax the pops aren’t the same. They too me toast really wassy. They don’t have the same taste. If you get the bottles, that you dilute yourself are far better. You can add as much or little to dilute as you like. PS Lindsay I love Dandelion and Burdock. But again it’s not the same as it used to be. It comes from a burdock root.
Totally agree, guys. I have always thought D&B was like a beer, I used to sit next to my dad when I was a child drinking D&B pretending I was 14 years older lol.
Ribena still my go to! It does have multiple flavours - while blackcurrant is the classic, there is a strawberry summer fruits version as well. My brother drank Vimto throughout his university days although this was mainly because if he bought orange squash, his housemates nicked it. The Vimto however was left untouched.
Somebody send them the Vimto and Ribena you dilute yourselves. That’ll blow their minds! When I was growing up (Manchester born and bred) Ribena was for the posh folk 😂
Ribena comes in concentrate aswell, which i like because you add it to water to your prefered taste. If you guys ever see Robinsons brand squash that can be found in the USA you should try it, just remember to dilute it in water lol, it also comes in a few flavors.
in New Zealand, we can get the concentrated form of Ribena that you dilute to your own preference, or as a premade cordial (non-fizzy) drink, or as a fizzy drink. They are all very nice.
I find it interesting that some people over your side of the pond find they prefer full sugar drinks to diet or zero versions. I personally prefer the diet or zero versions as I find the full sugar too "syrupy" and "heavy". I've also never experienced the aftertaste that people like yourselves talk about with non-sugar soft drinks. Your reaction, however, to Vimto Zero suggests that how we prepare Zero drinks over here in the UK is different to the US. Perhaps we do them using better quality sweeteners with less of an aftertaste than in the US?
It is called vimto zero which means zero sugar. Which is good on the uk because we have a sugar tax in this country. The more sugar you have you will pay a bit more on tax. Its goal is to stop obesity

I'm a midlander and I like both
I’m a northerner and prefer Vimpto I always found Ribena too sweet
Vimto is a rank grapey poor man’s Ribena
Lucozade sports is not Lucozade, Lucozade original is probably one of the first energy drinks and has a unique taste, I love it.
also normal lucozade sport is better than lucozade sport zero
Lucozade doesn’t taste like it used to do when I was a child which is very sad
I always think lucozade original tastes like a light, crisper version of tizer weirdly
As a child in the 80's and I was ill, my Mum would make hot lucozade drink... I still remember the taste and the big orange glass bottle!
Yeah it’s a bit like Irn Bru, but different.

Not a sugar rush its a laughter rush having fun is the best medicine ❤
Agreed! :)
No, it has not changed, but you can get drinks made with black currants in international aisles in groups stores.
(The bottles we had were what we call 'squash' which is a syrupy cordial you have to dilute to drink- not the premixed version you have there)
I used to like Robinsons barley water lemon squash.
Make it up in a jug and chill in the fridge. So refreshing on a summers day.
Nice and strong too.
And can be made into ice lollies too
You should try squash’s which you in the US don’t have. Squash’s are concentrated drinks that you mix with water.
We do have squash drinks in the international aisles in grocery stores.
I'm sure they've already done a video on cordials
They should try Robinsons barley water. I didn't know you didn't have squash over there
Dandelion and Burdock is made from the plants, it says on the can its made from botanicals.
I totally agree with you. Barr’s pop is awfully cheap, nasty tasting. It was a bit of an odd selection with several Vimto versions
You can get raspberries vimto & orange and peach.
Think when Americans try our drinks they miss the taste of usa additives
Corn syrup and 20 teaspoons of sugar 😂
Not really, I buy sodas made with cane sugar.
Corn syrup makes a soft drink WAY too sweet and it's in almost all American soft drink imports.
Not at all--we just don't like the taste of artificial sweetener.
I'm with you there I hate it.@@reactingtomyroots
I buy bottles of the vimto cordial which you dilute with water. Ribena is usually sold as cordial which is nice made with hot or cold water.
Dandelion and burdock is flavoured with dandelion and burdock - dandelion is obviously the yellow flower, and burdock is a root that grows from those big-leaved plants that grow next to stinging nettles
You would love Elderflower cordial!
That does sound delicious!

Vimto and Ribena most commonly come as 'squash', which is the syrup to which you dilute with 4 parts water to get to what you drank there
Vimto was created in the town where I live .. Blackburn, Lancashire. It's a shame no-one sent you a can of "Shandy" .. that's my favourite.
Eyyy, im from bburn too and i didnt know this 🤣
I used to get a can of shandy sometimes from the local shop after upper school, I felt so naughty and grown up.
Sugar rush is real however I have only ever had it from American soda because they are so sweet
Criminals you left the vimto bottle squashed
It was one of the instructions on the bottle.
@@Millennial_Mancyeah, it looks deliberate the way they've squashed it like that, I guess to remove air from the bottle to help keep the flavour

Dandelion & Burdock and Tizer are my favourites.
Tizer is THE British pop! D&B comes next! - VIMTO was also a special when I was a kid

Ribena is strange to most Americans because you weren't brought up with blackcurrents.
Illegal to grow them in the US apparently
@@Millennial_Mancthe black currants trees have a natural chemical in it, that destroys pine trees.

I think that it was the first fizzy drink in the UK , could be wrong, but sure it's old.
Haha I remember that wrapping
When you drink through a straw, you don’t get the aroma going up your nose. You miss half the flavour experience. Always drink from a glass.
Robinsons squash is so good. The British dental association recommends squash as the next best alternative after water and milk, therefore for those of you who find water boring, Robinsons squash is a great way to add flavour.
Hot Ribera is lovely

Whenever I have a cold or during the winter, hot Ribena is the drink of choice for me
I loved the 'Sass Bar'! Brings back memories of my dad taking me there. They also did the best ice-cream soda! ❤
It either sold as a squash at home that you dilute or the cartons for little kids, finally the bottles from the corner shop on the go
If you like Ribena you should try the cordial version and try it warm. It is fabulous especially if you have a cold or sore throat.
The best way to serve cream soda (espeically in the summer) is a Vanilla or Raspberry Ripple Ice Cream float... They are amazing.!!
Most soft drinks in the UK have been ruined by the 'sugar' rules. Hard to find but the full sugar drinks are preferred, as they have no aftertaste.
Enjoy.
Someone send them some vimto squash
And ribenea. I used to love the strawberry but my strawberry allergy has gotten so bad now it’s risky if I have it now.
Dandelion n burdoch is my favourite x
I love it when you both get the giggles 🤣x
Btw the dandelion and burdocks both have real dandelion and burdock in them. These typically do have star anise added to them which is probably why you could taste liquorice
Ribena is my go to hangover drink
If you have any Vimto "cordial" ( so not the premixed you have here) try it hot in the winter, that is how i prefer it.
It's the only thing my teen son will drink, he has it hot, cold and with lemonade.😆
when I was a kid, we would call Dandelion and Burdock ... Dandelions and Bird Muck.
we called it dandelion and burpalot
Dandelion and Bardock for the kids who grew up with Dragonball Z
It’s an acquired taste. I loved it growing up, but I also liked violet and rose creams too. 😂
I agree it ruined the flavour but it had to be done. Kids now will get used to the status quo.

They might need to find out what squash / cordial is. They are quite rare in the states and usually come in a concentrated sugar powder.
One thing I’d like to add. Since the sugar tax the pops aren’t the same. They too me toast really wassy. They don’t have the same taste. If you get the bottles, that you dilute yourself are far better. You can add as much or little to dilute as you like.

Dandelion and burdock is my favourite!

Tizer is the English equivalent to Irun Brew in Scotland - not the flavour but its popularity
You should watch a video called, "British Highschoolers try American Soft Drinks for the first time!" So funny.
Yay the picture is finally the right way round!
Where's the Bass Shandy?! 😮
