Story :-
OP is asked to visit his parents to help them out with a small loan to help with some slight financial trouble. OP is well off and does not want his parents to struggle so happily signs a handwritten loan agreement for $5000. The following day his wife, Jessica looks over the document and sees that the amount is not $5000 but $50,000. OP says he would never have agreed to that amount and begins to research and plan his revenge!

To anyone reading this. In financial matters never use numbers alone. Always spell values out in words.
And you are supposed to do that on any check you write, both numbers and written out, unless things have changed since the last time I wrote a check over ten years ago.

On cheques, yes, but few do. That should carry through to all financial documents, agreements, invoices and receipts included.
Also, always put a horizontal double line in front and behind your number, so nobody can amend more digits.
AND, every contract is executed in 2 copies, one for each party.
Always spell amount out. On checks it's called the legal line. If the number and written amount are different banks will always use the legal line.
Forgery is a felony! They need to be prosecuted!

File for FRAUD & THEFT. Double check all siblings credit reports. Bet they have done this before. Get their home for collateral now. You working for his friend is a set up all along. Include his accountant in your police report. STOP PAYMENT ON CHECK.
A stop payment on a check is not a perfect defense. Found this out when our bank cashed a check more than a year after I'd put a stop payment on it (so it was both stale and had a stop payment on it). When I asked the bank why the stop payment didn't work, they told me that they only keep the stop payment in their system for a year. After that, they remove it (so their computers don't have to cross-reference against a massive list of all checks in the bank's history which have ever had a stop payment applied), and rely on the check being over 90 days old to prevent it from being cashed.
Except it's up to the teller to notice the check's date is stale, and refuse to cash it. I'm guessing this teller misread the previous year on the date as the current year, and allowed the check to go through. Never got so much as an apology from the bank; all they did was refund the stop payment fee. Fortunately, it was a paycheck for a current employee - we'd reissued the check after she reported she'd lost the original. Her mom found it a year later while cleaning her room and deposited it for her. They were very understanding and we were able to just deduct the money from her next paycheck to balance things out.
Hopefully things have improved with all checks now being scanned and (presumably) OCR/handwriting recognition checking the dates. But if you've had to put a stop payment on a large check, or have had to place many stop payments over the year (more common than you think in business - checks get lost and reissued all the time), it's probably a good idea to close that checking account and open up a new one.

Well once I found out about the 50000 so called Mistake I would have gone to the bank and canceled the check and gone with wife to police and had parents arrested for attempted theft. Put an end to this a lot sooner and would not have helped them at all.
🤔 well honestly they deserve allot. One thing his parents did provide was the education and likely many social connections that gave them the ability to succeed as well as they had. That all said and done an apartment in a low income area is in proportion to the contribution made to overall success in life is both just deserts and a way to put them into the past without worries or feeling obligated.
Keep in mind the economic stability the kids have where 10k is a drop in the bucket a cheap apartment is likely just 1 weekend vacation.
It's also likely also a cheap way to assure themselves that their parents can live out their lives fully but not in squalor or on the streets.
Much of what he said makes me believe it was done not because the parents deserve it but because their kid couldn't just leave them homeless and pennyless when they were seemingly responsible for the success and connections their kids have thrived on.
Your first mistake after finding out it was not calling the bank and putting end to it

Stop payment on check and confront parents then follow up investigation. Had an uncle once who continued to rob my Dad. Not large amounts, but still. That went on forever. When I grew up and had my own place, he started robbing me. I confronted him in front of his mother (my grandmother) and told him if he attempted to rob me again, I would turn him in to the police. He got mad and asked why I would do that. “We’re family.” I responded I didn’t care. A thief is a thief. He never robbed me again. He drifted out of all contact and years later I learned he had died while in prison.
I would have reversed the question on him. Why are you doing this we're family?

Immediately stop payment on the check and THEN figure it out.
I'm a retired forensic accountant. As soon as I heard that dear old dad didn't want OP to let anyone know about his "poor investment" I knew that he was in a lot more debt than he'd told OP. Changing $5K to $50K (how long did he think he could get away with that?) just confirmed my suspicion. After that the story played out pretty much as I thought it would. Jeffrey, who is almost certainly a CPA, was lucky he didn't lose his license.

As you can imagine, people try a lot of scams at casinos and after a while I was put the Risk Management Department to detect those scams and defeat them. Shortly thereafter the state Gaming Commission asked me to dissect a particularly complicated scam, which I was able to do. Then the state Revenue Department hired me to investigate tax frauds. I ended up in a unit reporting to the state Attorney General and consisting of a couple of us from Revenue, a couple of people from the State Police, and a couple of people from the state Banking Commission looking at financial crimes.
It was more luck and happenstance than anything else that put me into forensic accounting. I could just as easily stayed at the casino as a senior accountant or VP-Finance.

Peter Hobson, it wasn't about poor investment. It was 2 ageable people that used to work & never gone on luxury holidays before. Now that they are on pension & had a huge inheritance, they did not handle it properly. What makes matters worst, they never made plans before travelling & spending, & they started meeting with people in higher positions & allow things to get out of hand. Instead of bending their heads & accept that they're wrong when confronted by their children, the father's pride went beyond him so much as to disrespect his son. He forgot he went to the very same son to ask for money. He gave him a blank check without asking him any questions & right there his gratitude was scamming his own son. So sad, what a scombag.
@@WiseWordsbyWiki There are 3 or 4 large Forensic firms in the US, plus a lot of small ones. Most (with the exception of Dunn), are not actual CPA firms. They are like consultants. Try finding one in your area. Check out things like becoming a Certified Fraud Examiner or a Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (look up ACAMS). I have been in forensic accounting one way or the other most of my professional career. First at a Forensic Firm, and now 30 years later by investigating money laundering.
I would have reported the parents for fraud.

I use to have an account with a video store, my sibling checked out items from that store without my permission. That store tried to charge me, I told them that they should not have let my sibling used my account. So I stopped going to that video store and put a restriction on all my accounts after my sibling stole from me and that store. I no longer go to video stores, I just do streaming instead and keep my accounts secured.

One should never feel like an idiot because they thought their family was their family and would do no such thing. The shame belongs definitely on the parents. Those who took advantage are the ones in the wrong, and they didn’t just steal money they stole trust.
Op shouldn't be so hard on himself. If he grew up relatively well and was treated well before now why would he suspect that the people he trusted would scam and attempt to steal from him. However, I'm with Allen. Op would have being an absolute chump if he didn't hold his parents accountable for this illegal nonsense. Honestly it sounds like the consequences of their irresponsibility was catching up to them regardless of what op felt. It's really pitiful they let their greed get this bad.
Anyone who deals with money should know you write out the amount as well as put the number. (On the agreement they signed.) That's why you put the amount twice in checks... That was the first mistake.

A couple of parents at my kids' school had a ridiculously extravagant lifestyle, had a plane AND a jet, frequent trips to Europe for shopping, etc, and when the feds caught up to the embezzlement scheme he had, similar to a Bernie Madoff fraud, but with US government money, he got fifteen years in the federal penitentiary, the longest sentence at that time for a non-capital crime. In federal prison you serve every day, minute and hour of your sentence.
Wow! Maybe you should submit your story to Mr Reddito, it would make a change to have an actual real story and not a fabricated one.
Stop the money and have them live within their means and move into a smaller house and move to another town. Threaten them you will tell the truth to everyone if they try this again. If possible take control of their money and give them an allowance.
Do people actually leave $50k+ in a zero interest checking account? I keep it in a savings or investment account. Calculate how much I'll be paying via check and online bill pay each month, and transfer that amount into my checking account. Someone alters a check to a higher amount and tries to cash it, it bounces. I may have to clean up a mess at my bank getting fees reversed due to attempted fraud, but the money from the fraud attempt doesn't leave my account.
It depends on how rich they are. For some people that is money you find in the sofa cushions. Don't underestimate the massive wealth a lot of people have. Really rich people don't even work, or if they do, their earnings or lack of them don't affect their lifestyle. Their investments and trust funds are how they live, not their paycheck.
So while you may have $500 in a zero interest checking account and not be bothered by it, the equivalent for them would be $5,000,000, or more.
My father always gave me back money ten fold. As an I give him 5$ he always gave me back 50$. He said he did this to so I know how the banks felt. It was a good way to learn.

I would put them in senior home for old people, stating they are too old, and do not have the capability's to hold on to plans as they are old and feeble and want to enjoy life, their current life is lacking determination and willpower to execute big problems as you judges can see its therefor before more damage could be caused, we would like to put them in a Senior home, where there is a eye kept on both of them, they should be able to leave the premises only under strict supervision by senior employees.

From working customer service for a bank 1 post dating a check means nothing. That isn’t legally binding it’s just for your own personal records or whatever 2 the written out amount on a check is the legal amount so you go by what that says

They committed insurance fraud several times. How did they not get prison time? Insurance companies don't play around with that.
As soon as he knew the dad changed the amount on the agreement & he had given dad a blank check, he should've put a "stop payment" on that check at the bank. The fee for doing that is small ($30-50 I think depending on the bank) compared to how much you can lose. All he had to do is tell the bank that he heard the relative he gave it to was going to change the amount without his knowledge, thereby committing fraud, & pay the fee. When the check then tried to be put through it would be rejected. THEN go do all that investigating!

I had a close family member steal $5k from me. I forgave and moved on. A year later they tried to steal a measly $20. I cut them completely out of my life and are shunned by half the family. Everyone deserves a second chance but there's no such thing as a third chance. Sorry, not sorry.

Ok, a few questioning things about this story. Going to list them down along with the updates.
Initial story: First off, for being an accountant and knowing that Fraud can happen. It was a rookie move letting someone, even a loved one, to sign in the amount needed for a check. Also why didn't the wife just say the problem she found? Why didn't she just say it over the phone instead of saying they needed to meet for lunch. This would be a time sensitive issue and you would need to hurry up and address it. Also why beat around the bush and just tell OP to look at the paper. Uhh...in a time like that just say it, don't let him look for the error. And second why didn't OP just call the bank and tell them to freeze the check or something so he would have more time. He's making it seem like he's on a timer, when he can cancel it at any time.
Update 1: The format so far seems to be in story format, like it's trying to build up drama. This update shows that he went back to work right after, and called his brother. Umm...if these updates are supposed to show how things happened after a bit of time, why not show this part in the initial story? Also when OP uploaded the initial story did he do it during that lunch? I don't think he would have time. So in a way shouldn't this update be apart of the initial story? And next thing, why call the brother? Why not just call the parents and just ask or point out the "error" made. People make errors and pointing them out is common, and would need to be fixed. And yet at the meeting with his brother, Alan had that specific file with him at the bar? He brings a file with him all the time? That is just too coincidental.
Update 2: Again OP made the mistake by not calling the parents and asking about it. Nor this Jeffery. He's way too trusting, and is going about this issue the wrong way. And also why didn't this Jeffery bring up this concern to OP? Also after seeing his parents accounts, why didn't OP instantly call the bank to cancel his check? Also if the accounts showed that his parents were committing fraud and Jeffery didn't say anything about it, doesn't that make him an accessory to the crime? It's like OP wanted it to go through to keep drama going by not confronting the parents. Also if OP said he'll update when he speaks to Alan why not wait till after speaking with Alan before updating? When did he have time to write this update if he was meeting Alan after work? OP seems to be able to update his story during times when he isn't supposed to.
Update 3: Oh OP finally called the bank to block the check, why not just say that before? Also after finding out that his parents are frauds and committed that why would OP want to let them off the hook? Knowing about their past and stuff. Also it seems like Alan seemed to know about their parents habits, from the way it's written. If he did why didn't he tell OP originally?
Final update: How did OP find out about their parents stealing things from a country club and pawning them? Also if they didn't know who stole them why would the parents pawn them instead of just selling? That leaves a trace, a very bad one. Yet apparently the country club has footage of the parents stealing. Uh...why don't they just call the cops? Why weren't the parents arrested? That country club is either very bad at how to handle theft or this part was exaggerated. Why keep allowing things to go missing when you have a way to stop it? All just because of reputations? Uhh...if it gets out that things go missing at your country club your own reputation will go down as no one will want to join. That is just a weak excuse for not reporting the crime. So after the father insulted OP's wife, they don't show what he did next? No outburst, or storming out. It just skip that part? Also did Jeffery get jail time? If he was moving money around he was an accessory to fraud which is illegal.
I'm going to say that this story is fabricated, all because of these issues. There are just so many things going on that could have been addressed or steps that weren't taken.
I agree with you, tbh, I think all of these stories on Mr Reddito are all fake....maybe some are 'loosely' based on actual events but the storylines are just that, a story which is just meant to entertain us.

Sounds like some people I know. My late husband and I always lived well beneath our means. We didn't take fancy vacations, didn't have fancy cars, didn't buy fancy clothes or jewelry. Hubby passed three years ago and I am74 years old. I am living a comfortable lifestyle but still below my means. I put money into savings every month and make extra principal payments on my mortgage. I still don't take fancy vacations but I might drive cross country sometime soon.
He isn’t a CPA as a CPA would know that a check is negotiable even before the date on the check. He would also know that a simple stop,payment would solve the problem.

Except that checks have to have the amount written out! It would therefore state five hundred and not five thousand.
This is just one of the Mr. Reddit stories that continues to baffle my mind. The the ultra audacity of people continues to render my eyes and ears to the point of numbness! However, it gives me great resources of information as to what I am going to do concerning my own dilemma with toxic people and relatives, respectively.

The second he said that his father changed it for. $5k to $50k it was obvious they were scammers and liars. If you are capable of doing that to your own children you are capable of anything. I would of been like little bro and cut them of completely. No modest apartment in a low income area. I would of left them on the streets after the comments father made about the wife.

I used to be a bank teller. We never looked at dates on checks that closely. Post dating checks does not work to stop the cashing. We processed them regardless of the date.

The loan agreement does not actually obligate you to lend the money, it ONLY lays out the conditions for repayment once the money IS loaned.
If the money is not delivered, the agreement has simply not been executed.

I was living with a mom of two at the time. There were 4 adults in the house. I don't know why this wasn't a red flag. One of the guys (bf at the time) told me that the other guys rent money came up missing. Everything and everyone was searched. I was angry that I was being accused of stealing (red flag 2). Red flag 3 came when my bf and I decided that we should help him out as if he actually lost the money ment for a loan. We pooled our money together and it was $300 from the both of us to give to the mother. Well eventually we moved out into our our apartment and we were struggling. I had just gotten pregnant and we need the money back. I asked the other guy for the money back and he said that he wouldn't give it back to me "as it's not even yours anyways, that it was boyfriends. And I am going to give it to boyfriend if he asked." Bf never asked ( red flag 4). Turns out that he actually spent his rent money on other things. I never did see that money back but I never talked to the rent thef again. The bf is an ex now and that is a whole different story.
Listening to this story is like taking a long walk on a short pier.
Have an uncle who will always help you with whatever whenever but will never repay any money "borrowed"... It was never malicious or intentional. It was more of a help eachother any way any how and don't ask for repayment.
As such my mom insisted that if he helped them with anything that they pay him fairly for it.
Sometimes Values and expectations are not what you think and sometimes boundaries need to be set for better health and relationships.

Great story but I would not write even my parents a blank check. I think I would blocked the check on day one and confront them on the matter. But then I can't really no for sure as my dad died when I was 16. They also never lived beyond their means.
This is why 1) i never elude to anyone how much I make or have saved 2) live well with in my means, primarily if I have take a lesser paying job, I can still afford everything

My only problem with OP's actions is not taking steps to secure those pawn shop items from being sold. Losing items of value often have much more significance than any dollar amount. Rolex watches are often sentimental heirlooms now.

I let a homeless girl move in to my house and things started to go missing. Money, food, jewelry,y kids toys, and electronics. The most important thing she took from me was a necklace my mom had gifted me when she went into the hospital for heart surgery and she said wear this and think of me. Thankfully my mom is ok, but that's still something I want back

If you write a check, it ALWAYS has the amount written in ~numbers~ and again, in ~words~.
If you have to, take a picture with your phone.
That entire story is full of those with the greed of money, sure the parents where terrible but those kids where honestly no better!!!
Always get the loan in writing and get a cashier's check from the bank because they print it out and so the numbers cannot be changed

Never lend money to family they don't know how to pay it back at all. I have enough money to make me happy but that is it. I don't lend money to family at all.
Best way to be really, unless the situation is genuine and the money is given without expectation of return. I've only ever given money to my son knowing this, I don't want it back as I know he would struggle to repay it. I do though have a wonderful relationship with him and he phones and talks to me regularly just to ask how I am.
