Based a 25 page play script entirely off of this song. Finished school ranking number 1 in Drama, and I'm on my way to Uni next year. Thank you Jeff Lynne.
I wrote a long, involved post on SomethingAwful's GBS forum a few years back based on this song. Claimed I found an old diary hidden in my uncle's old record store. Every diary entry was a day in the life of Horace, taken DIRECTLY from this song. Salted it full of Jeff Lynne/ELO references, posted a new entry every day or so...had a LOT of people going, thinking it was real. Big fun. 😁
Now I am convinced Jeff Lynne is a genius. I love how in the first chorus he sings "Horace Wimp, this is your life. Go out and find yourself a wife." and then in the last chorus he sings "Horace Wimp, this is your wife. Go out and find yourself a life." Genius.
...AND it's valid progression! It is genius! You THINK you have a "life" when you hit adulthood (and you DO!), then when you get married, you hit the "reset" button and "reboot".
@@Jagjustlisten For real though, there are so many genuinely unbelievably amazing ones that never see a greater audience. Not saying the popular ones are bad, but others are just as good if not better
Saturday was his bucks night … he got bladdered, snorted cocaine and shagged twenty call girls (some of whom were small and verrrrry pretty, some big and ugly) …. it's in the missing / rarely heard fourth verse
th-cam.com/video/PFU9HYyMVxQ/w-d-xo.html It isn't on the official channel, and the quality leaves a lot to be desired, but here it is anyway. In my opinion this song, along with a lot of ELO other songs really deserve animated videos like the one for Mr. Blue Sky.
I`m so incredibly proud. My youngest son (he`s 22) told me today he really loves ELO. I`ve been a fan of ELO since I was 12 when I bought my very first record which was Livin` Thing. I can remember like it was yesterday my 16th Birthday when my parents bought me 'Discovery' album by ELO. I played it so many times that by the time Christmas came around 6 months later, I bought the album again because I wore the other one out.
My parents got me the live "Wembley or bust" record for my birthday this year, plus tickets to one of their concerts for next year. Proud to be an ELO fan
I just turned 20 and it's pretty funny thinking about this. I can remember my mom playing ELO, CCR, The Doobies, Floyd, Doors and all(except the Dead she hates them) and I can specifically remember always asking her to change her "old people music." Fast forward about 14 years and this stuff is all I listen to XD Funny what some aging and perspective will do to you.
I just have to say it's a great song. As a child I got the album on cassette as a Christmas present. And there were many competing songs on that album, but this particular song I automatically sang along to. When I listen to the song here in the year of 2024 and the lyrics goes "here comes my wife for the rest of my life" my eyes get wet and I just don't know why. It's a great song.
I don’t think Jeff Lynne has any idea what a masterpiece this song is. This journey of hope and exploration..it has always had an effect on me from maybe when I was 15. I adore this whole album, but this song is extra special.
What do you mean by “the way”? The comment didn’t even mention the Beatles. Also how dare you single out my favourite human being of all time, Paul McCartney who has quite literally stated that ELO sounds exactly what the Beatles would be had they continued into the 70s and 80s.
This song has became my lucky charm after aiding me in passing my theory and practical driving test as I would listen to it just before I took them. Think the motive of 'grabbing life by the balls' helped me realise how relevant it is for life
I hear alot of Beatles influence in this song, especially, but really all of ELO's music. Jeff has even said that being compared to the Beatles is the highest form of flattery. To me, ELO picked up where the Beatles left off. Both amazing artists way ahead of their time!

I've loved ELO from afar for over 40 years. Mr. Blue Sky, Turn to Stone, Don't Bring me Down, you know, stuff they played a lot on the radio. Today I decided to dig a little deeper than the radio ever dared and found this absolute gem. I've put it off for decades, and I am so glad I waited. I got to hear a brand new ELO song today, and I loved it!
This was playing back in 1979 whilst I proposed to the most fantastic woman in the world, we married, had two fabulous boys, then I screwed up and lost the most precious thing in my life and my best friend, wish I could turn the clocks back, I’d never screw it up. I still love her with all my heart would do anything to get her back. The song makes me cry every time I hear it.
“The Diary of Horace Wimp” (1979) was recorded at the Musicland Studios in Munich, Germany. On this, ELO frontman Jeff Lynn sang lead vocals, and played lead & rhythm guitar, piano and synthesizer‼️. 💚🎶💙
My favorite ELO songs change... and this one is my favorite for this week, or month... maybe until the new year. Who knows! Jeff Lynne is a legend that walks among us.
Don't be afraid, just knock on the door. Did anyone notice that Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday was said? I am completely puzzled why Saturday wasn't mentioned. My life will always be with the Electric Light Orchestra. My love for the band is completely out of this world!!!
Fantastic song to listen to & great memories to go with this song when I was 14! Great through the headphones! 🎧🎧🎧 Wild use of the vocoder here & the Yamaha CS-80 keyboard featured here in the fantastic tune! 😊😊🎧🎧🎧
what makes this piece magic is the contribution of the violins which gives all the lightness of the song, ELO demonstrated with this music all the artistic intelligence that the group had.

That was an eventful week for Horace
El estilo de música clásica es pegajoso en la canción, es pegadizo y alegre :)
This song reached top ten on UK.
This makes my life...
did not know that - cool - great song. Discovery got me into ELO. Still have the original LP from 1979.
Horace doesn't live in a universe that has Saturdays either apparently
Horace was so terrible at love that a higher power had to intervene
Noice joke mate
Pretty freaking funny that joke was
poor guy
I’m so terrible ELO had to Intervene
Same story, pal.

Shawn D Kelly Groucutt actually sang the chorus. Although Jeff did write it.
I had to listen to it after your comment; and Yes!, that's some DAMN good word-play.
Yesss!
I like to imagine that ELO followed Horace around narrating his life like Love Handel in that Phineas and Ferb episode
Indeed
They were the voice from above
charliesaperson or the owls from Rango ;)
sounds like me lol

EXACTLY!!!
This is one of those songs that I don't listen too often, but everytime I do I instantly remember how good it is.

CRIMINALLY underrated ELO song, especially on Discovery!
The fact that the they are so underrated only makes their music better. And this song, in its own way, is as profound as "Hey Jude."
This was before guardians of the galaxy2
Jim & Hugh O'N
Well I still think they're pretty underrated, people have just opened up to Mr Blue Sky
Juan Flores I guess but I discovered them after guardians and I don’t think I’m the only one
Degree7 I’m just saying there is a chance people would listen to mr blue sky and look for more

Yes.

How did I get so invested in a character from a four minute song?
They skipped Saturday because Horace didn't do anything that day but prepare for the wedding
Trueblade1423 He was at home watching the football match

Jeff Lyne supposedly said in an interview nothing happened on Saturday because everyone is either at home or at the pub watching the football game

Elaine R John Lennon made the same observation!
I agree. Very Beatles-esque. The voice that says the days of the week sounds like a tribute to John Lennon. This is ELO’s “A Day in the Life”.
Very "Beatlesque" Not the SAME but, a natural evolution of the sound, YES!
Michael Lee The strings are very similar
I agree. but I also hear alot of Bee Gees in some parts. Eleanor Rigby too.
This needs to be in a damn good movie.
Jeff Lynne, THE songwriting/producer of our time

This is such an inspiring track
Jeff Lynne should make a song about Horace wimp and where he is now all these years later
"Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Sunday".
the football plays on Saturday
Nabi the cat I know. I researched this song. That's why Saturday is omitted from the daily lineup.
