I’m 53 and dying of Stage 4 Inoperable Double Lung Cancer and I LOVE this song. Death is as quick as a blink of an eye. So like I tell everyone : Death is shutter speed!!!! I’ve been dead once already. I died when I was 9 years old and was down for 45 minutes and I was allowed to come back. I’ve lived every moment like it’s My last because as I learnt at age 9 “No one is promised a tomorrow”!!!!!
Growing up in the Deep South in Mississippi in the 1970’s, imagine the shock of my brothers when l discovered this song and played in constantly! Why? Because in my neck of the south, black teenagers didn’t listen to this type of music. You can imagine the ribbing and being ostracized by my peers in 1979 as a HS senior! I didn’t care! Music is a universal language and SuperTramp was one of my favorite groups during my senior year!!!! Rock On!!!!
I completely understand! I’m a black Baby Boomer and I love this song ( which is how I came to see your comment as I looked it up on TH-cam to hear it). My late husband( also black) also loved it. When we were dating, we used to enjoy it on the car radio. My musical tastes range from Marvin Gaye to Blood, Sweat and Tears; from Aretha Franklin to Carole King and more. In my experience, diversity in all its forms has always added joy to my life and continues to do so.👏🏾

Played this song at my son's Celebration of Life Party. The theme we chose in honor of Shane was. Take Time To Make Time! This was the message we believe he wanted to leave everyone. Make time for what's important to you. He was definitely a Take the Long Way Home kinda kid. I don't know what he might have been if he'd had more time, but whatever it was it was gonna be great!!! However in his 21 years here, he significantly left an impact on everyone he met!!! This song always made me emotional but now I can't hear it without crying for my baby. I was 21 when I first heard this song, it was the summer of '79. I loved this song but never really understood it, not at a young age when the world seems perfect and promising. 43 years later after many successes and failures, this song is almost a life's anthem of what hasn't been fulfilled, and may never be. I completely get it now.

When my mother died (this October will be 25 years) as my dad and I got into the car after her funeral as I had turned on the radio, this very song came on. My mother loved Supertramp and their music. This was one of her favorite songs.

The first time I heard this Supertramp song was on my transistor radio!! It was a wonderful time to be alive as a child in the 1970s. I had no deep awareness of my parents experiencing angst from the long gas lines during odd and even days. Supertramp’s music from that day forward and until now have never changed their sounds of newness each decade!! This song playing in my ears from a pocket radio, record player, boombox, CD player, and streaming mechanisms have always awaken my soul with their extraordinary sounds and meaningful lyrics!!! Fast forward to 2021. I just now realized the total relevance of the Breakfast in America album cover, which I never really thought about when the album originally came out. New York is built completely from dining room table fixtures like salt shakers, coffee cups, etc. The World Trade Center is made from sugar cubes. All the ship berths are knives, forks, and spoons. And the waitress is the Statue of Liberty, replete with paper crown and lofting a glass of orange juice in the air instead of a torch. The entire scene is being viewed from an airline passenger window. Maybe all this stuff should have be obvious right away, LOL, but it's taken me all this time to actually appreciate the creative genius here.
I recommend you check out Kaleo, Nathaniel Ratliff and the night sweats, and the Lumineers. These three are really good bands. They make wonderful music.

August 1979, Ft Worth, this song came on the FM radio on my 1975 Cougar I had just improved the engine on. I took the long way home up US 377 and almost got to Denton, turned around and was real proud of myself. Always remember thee feeling hearing Supertramp while driving fast.
There was a season when my mom played this album nonstop everyday while she drove me to school when I was a child. I couldn't understand the beauty of this songs back then, I only knew I liked them. As I was rolling along those brightly lit freeways, not a soul to be seen, this song came up... I swear he was talking to me. I DID take the long way home. I was headed back the long way home from Warm Springs Oregon Reservation Indian Jail in 1979 when this song came out and it played on the radio multiple times as I sat in the back seat of my dads Granada car I got back home just for a few moments then got back in the car on my way to a long way back home threw the hospital . At 17 on Friday the 13th my Murder charges were dropped I was in Napa state hospital 3 years later I got out at 22 I was 15 when I shot my Cousin on the warm springs reservation in 1979 I’m in aww that all of Roberts /Chris close relations are all Passed away now both younger brother and sister and mom and Dad are gone as of last year my Mom & Dad are still alive and my 51 year old Brother I love them wit all my heart and have loved me no matter what plus they had adopted me in 1971 I was 7 … 7 to 15 years I grew up with the Tulees my dad is 85 my mom is 83 God Bless them Truly And unconditionally amen. I was 21 when I first heard this song, it was the summer of '79. I loved this song but never really understood it, not at a young age when the world seems perfect and promising. 43 years later after many successes and failures, this song is almost a life's anthem of what hasn't been fulfilled, and may never be. I completely get it now.

Items that my dad didn't even know she still had hidden away. He thought she tossed em long ago. This album was in my box that she returned to me.

It was uncomfortable at first, but sitting on it while waiting for government checks to arrive induces a feeling of euphoria and well being. The first time I heard this Supertramp song was on my transistor radio!! It was a wonderful time to be alive as a child in the 1970s. I had no deep awareness of my parents experiencing angst from the long gas lines during odd and even days.
Supertramp’s music from that day forward and until now have never changed their sounds of newness each decade!! This song playing in my ears from a pocket radio, record player, boombox, CD player, and streaming mechanisms have always awaken my soul with their extraordinary sounds and meaningful lyrics!!! Fast forward to 2021. I just now realized the total relevance of the Breakfast in America album cover, which I never really thought about when the album originally came out. New York is built completely from dining room table fixtures like salt shakers, coffee cups, etc. The World Trade Center is made from sugar cubes. All the ship berths are knives, forks, and spoons. And the waitress is the Statue of Liberty, replete with paper crown and lofting a glass of orange juice in the air instead of a torch. The entire scene is being viewed from an airline passenger window. Maybe all this stuff should have be obvious right away, LOL, but it's taken me all this time to actually appreciate the creative genius here.

August 1979, Ft Worth, this song came on the FM radio on my 1975 Cougar I had just improved the engine on. I took the long way home up US 377 and almost got to Denton, turned around and was real proud of myself. Always remember thee feeling hearing Supertramp while driving fast.

I’m 25 yrs old next month, I know this song from my Dad, and I always loved it. I own this record in my own personal record collection. And I like reading the stories from folks who listened to this back in 1979. It’s beautiful what things pass on through the generations. I’m glad this song has such a rich history. 😊

babarrett1 I was 21 years old when this album debuted. And beginning born and raised in Orange County, CA. It was a helluva time to be alive. Was it perfect .? No. People say we have progressed since then ,I'm not so sure about that . If I could go back I would in the blink of an eye. There's a certain girl I worked with that I would like to talk to.

That harmonica takes me back to my late teens.
im 58 and when i hear Supertramp im transported back to the best days of our life.
I was headed back the long way home from Warm Springs Oregon Reservation Indian Jail in 1979 when this song came out and it played on the radio multiple times as I sat in the back seat of my dads Granada car I got back home just for a few moments then got back in the car on my way to a long way back home threw the hospital . At 17 on Friday the 13th my Murder charges were dropped I was in Napa state hospital 3 years later I got out at 22 I was 15 when I shot my Cousin on the warm springs reservation in 1979 I’m in aww that all of Roberts /Chris close relations are all Passed away now both younger brother and sister and mom and Dad are gone as of last year my Mom & Dad are still alive and my 51 year old Brother I love them wit all my heart and have loved me no matter what plus they had adopted me in 1971 I was 7 … 7 to 15 years I grew up with the Tulees my dad is 85 my mom is 83 God Bless them Truly And unconditionally amen. At the end of every major family gathering my brother’s always play this song before everyone leaves. It’s so nice because we will always have memories of those great times with people we❤
Listening to this song and reminiscing about the past has driven home a cold, hard reality....at least for me. You "can never go home again". At my age, its a brutal and sad realization. Enjoy your life when your living it and NEVER have regrets.

At 53 yrs old this song holds a lot of memories for me when I was a little girl!!!!! Spent a lot of time with my uncles who grew up in the 70s and Supertramp was one of their favorite groups. Times were so much easier then!!!

...long time ago, when I was sixteen years old I was suspected in english grammar school by the teacher, so I took a melancholy feeling about the melody , raised by the charming of SUPERTRAMP...
...now, any years later, since I`ve been aged up to october 2024 for fiftyseven years, I become melancholy again, looking back to my youth, thinking about the happiness in my life, which has been brought by this great Music Artists.
This song came on the radio when I was a kid driving with my mom and we were lost..she said well I guess we are taking the "long way home ".She is currently losing her battle with cancer and this song brought me back to being in the car with her laughing about the irony of the song while being lost..I love you mom..now and forever ❤❤❤❤❤
