Before I first heard this at 6 years old, I was shown how to properly take an album out of the jacket, how to clean it, how to handle it, how to place it on the turntable, how to set the correct speed, how to stack records, and most importantly, how to drop the needle on the edge and find the groove.. This was the record played.
Omg are you related to us?? My cousin gave me the same responsibility at that early age & I remember the vinyl was bright blue & I was so careful positioning that needle 💖💙🥰
Yeah and he's still not a patch on Brian Wilson. I like Jeff but the best version of ELO was with that freak Roy Wood. Now he really is a musical genius

At first I was skeptical about this album when I heard that they had gone disco. Never cared much for that. But ELO managed to strike a perfect balance between their signature sound and the disco-dance theme. I love it (and this album). LESSON: *Never judge something until you experience it first.*
@@aclark903 No, and you don't need to try it. But don't you agree that it would be hard to give an accurate description of it unless you actually tried it yourself? Same with NK. You probably know some general information about it from reading news stories, but it would be totally different to actually go there. Just like this guy. He heard people saying it was disco, and that wasn't false, but it was still different from how he had imagined it.
Fun facts, this song was sampled for a club track played in an episode of How I Met Your Mother, the lyrics of which foreshadowed upcoming events in the story, though the lyrics weren't actually present in the episode. You had to be familiar with the song prior to the episode to understand the clue. HIMYM loved foreshadowing its plot points like that.
I heard this song on American Bandstand in the July 28th, 1979 episode which featured Maxine Nightingale singing her R&B, Pop and #1AC hit single "Lead Me On" from the album of the same name. I love ELO. They are one of the musical guests of the seventies soft rock cruise this year.
@@adam872 It's weird you've not paid attention to the bass line on what's essentially a disco song. It's in the barebone of it. It's true it doesn't follow the typical disco bassline pattern as much as in "Last Train To London". There's where you have the most disco-ist bassline in ELO'S history (In my opinion, at least).
Some ELO fans were put-off by the disco-flavored Discovery LP, calling it "Disco-VERY". Especially following the rock-heavy Out Of The Blue LP.But yes, great tune, and great album.
first, i happen to love this albums cover and second, from this album, "don't bring me down" brought me around to the fantastic band and all of their music!
A favorite roller skating song, back then. Oh the slide and glide of the music - turning and swooshing along, like flying, so free... Now I'm too old and scared of falling to skate. This wonderful song still makes me fly - in my heart!
I was just finishing 1st grade, when this came out. My dad bought the 45 rpm version, and just out of curiosity, I played it. Omg!! I was so taken in by this happy song, that I played it to death! It became my new favorite of ELO!
wow.... this sound-spectacular intro! Truly one of a kind, brings me back... Sneaking into Mom's music collection back in the 80's seems like yesterday. Loved the track about Horace the whimp too...

Me too. Although this song is from the '70s, the actual year was 1979. "Groovy" , although coined in the 1930s, was used by hip people only in the very late 1960s to the very early 1970s, pretty much disappearing by 1973.
This song and Show Down are my 2 favorites from ELO....It still sounds great after all of these years. I sure do miss the music from the 70's, 80's and 90's.....

She had just got the elo album discovery. And she played it over and over. I begged my mom to buy it. my first 8 track was that album. So the two of them are engraved in my memory forever!!

Super song writing, great musicianship.
This was a smash hit, so I doubt that can be the case. It's truly amazing anyway.

Love the 'galloping' effect; one of my favorite songs - so upbeat. :)

Jeff Lynn. A Beatles fanatic and musical genius
Didn't George or John say that if they'd stayed together they would have evolved their sound into ELO?
Davey Givens John said that Jeff Lynn’s ELO was like the son of The Beatles or somethin

I was fortunate enough too see them 3 times between the 70' and 80's...stunning in concert...
I envy you
very jealous though touring is what tore the band apart
And Jeff Lynne always being the star and controlling everything
who would you think would be?...it was his band...Bev?...Hugh?...Marvin?...Kelly?...

I LOVE this song and that 'cascading downward' keyboard effect heard once the song really started. Anyone else love that too?!
Richard Tandy playing with the Yamaha CS-80.

by far my favorite ELO song
My heart goes to the Electric Light Orchestra. Thank you Jeff Lynne and co.
Elo are like the Beatles of disco. they took thier elements make it thier own way. no wonder george harrison loved him so much. great band.
Still such an underrated band in the UK
Their just underrated in general
One of the most underrated songs that I ever heard...
At the time it was controversial because hardcore #ELO fans (Elo was kinda #progrock to begin with) weren't sure about #Disco...(very. )
All those fantastic years comes back in a minute...
Lyrics
Although the things you've done I wouldn't criticize
I guess you had your way
You see I gotta make you understand
I know it sounds a foolish thing to say
But it don't matter baby 'cos' today's another day
You shine a little love on my life
You shine a little love on my life
You shine a little love on my life and let me see

But I really need you darlin' every day I need you more

You shine a little love on my life
You shine a little love on my life and let me see
Can you understand (yes I understand)
Can you feel it's right (I know it is)
Will you be the same (I'll do it all again)
It's been a year now and it's getting so much better
You came home without a word
Though everybody said you'll soon forget her
They couldn't see and they just didn't understand
And lookin' in the mirror there were fools at either hand
You shine a little love on my life
You shine a little love on my life
You shine a little love on my life and let me see
Can you understand (yes I understand)
Can you feel it's right (I know it is)
Will you be the same (I'll do it all again)
How many days had I been waiting there to tell you
I really can't believe
We're walkin' out into the world tonight
We'll do it all again until the break of light
And the feelin' in your heart will soon be shinin' in your eyes
You shine a little love on my life
You shine a little love on my life
You shine a little love on my life and let me see
You shine a little love on my life
You shine a little love on my life
You shine a little love on my life and let me see
