There isn't a song this man writes, performs,produces, engineers and puts out that isn't the epitome of what music is meant to be. I can listen to Jeff all day, everyday and be jaw dropped impressed. Hello my old friend is sheer perfection.
That's my fav song too, so much is captured in this song, I cannot thing of another that equals Jeff he is simply 100% gold!

Dont I know it ! No wonder they called him the 5th Beatle or am I imagining this ? Anyway I definitely know George referred to him as Beatle Jeff which will do for me !
@@formbyuke181 And John (Lennon) called ELO 'Sgt Pepper version 2' which was kind of a back handed compliment, noting the influence of the Beatles on the songs but also that Jeff was doing a decent job of it.
George didn't suffer fools as we know, but also you can trace Jeff's influences back quite clearly - another one is Roy Orbison in the vocals and the music. Listen to Roy's greatest hits back to back with Alone In The Universe... you may be a little shocked. Rip or homage, take your choice. I think it's the latter but some of it is real close to a copy.
But this doesn't take away from the fact he can sing, play multiple instruments, produce (including the Beatles, well three of them) and be successful with ELO over 30 years. He is a musical genius yes.
Although Overture 10538 is a direct rip of Dear Prudence. And Weller did it again with Changing Man. I hope the Lennon family are getting royalties.

Don't Forget ELO Bouncer, It's Originally On Time, Just They Released It Only On The 12 Inch Single, The Track Is Called Bouncer For A Reason :)
Real reason: label didn't want to invest the cash into a full double album I believe, so they had to cut some songs and skip writing others to get everything down to a dingle disc
Personal theory but I think it works well: Bouncer, When Time Stood Still, and Julie Don't Live Here are the 3 endings to Time. The album itself is a bit ambiguous, potentially by design. Jeff could have wanted the album to be up to interpretation, so he made sure none of these tracks made it on so there wouldn't be a real "end" to point to. The 3 bonus tracks are different ways it could have turned out:
-Bouncer is where the main character was dreaming, and tries to tell his SO about it, and she has to convince him it was a dream, but he's just happy to be back. Could also be that the main character actually was time traveling, but returned to tell his SO about it. Either way, Bouncer is the "Good Ending"
-Julie Don't Live Here is where the main character was indisputably time-traveling, but when returning to his time, he missed it by a few years, in which time his SO Julie figured he ditched her and she moved on with her life, ultimately moving away. This is the "Bad Ending"
-When Time Stood Still is a bit odd, but I think it's about the main character getting lost in time, and without being able to return, ultimately sees time "stand still" as he loses all meaning in things while trying to find a way back. This is the "Very Bad Ending" (or the "Open-Ended Ending" since he *could* still come back to see Julie)
I could listen to "Hello my old friend" for hours on repeat. In fact, I did already. 😂

If the Beatles came to JEFF LYNNE looking for his input on an album, I would say that would be one the highest compliments one could do for him. He did it too ! That ranks up there near Genius . . .

To me, the Electric Light Orchestra music died after the release of Xanadu soundtrack. All we have here is a selection of Jeff Lynne's solo career comprising of 1950s-esque dirges, which quite frankly, want to make me slit my wrists. His music was never the same after that.

It boggles the mind!! All of these stellar songs, and who knows how many more Jeff has under his mattress. ELO, hands down, one of MY favorite bands of the 70's and 80's.
You may want to check out the albums Armchair Theatre and Long Waves. It is amazing music too!

I have the Fartbags first Album "Darts'n'Farts" somewhere in the attic. Brilliant album, I haven't listened for decades - or were it centuries? It includes their greatest single hit "Don't Fart Twice" and some real album gems such as "If you Fart We're Soon Apart"! All songs written and produced by F. Art.

Julie, Buildings, Flirt and Tears are keepers I.M.O. The rest are just merely more solid examples of what a great songwriter Lynne is - the fact that these were cast offs.
Julie Don't Live Here Anymore is a true gem. It is one of my favorite songs.

"Julie, Don't Live Here Anymore", is up there in my fav Electric Light Orchestra songs, for sure. This B-side got many more plays, than "Twilight". "Time" still gets many plays every year, such a great album. :) and my Japanese pressing, ends with this fantastic song, so for me the perfect CD, NOW!!!!

When Time Stood Still is one of the best songs ELO ever did!!! It is a mystery that Jeff didn't do a symphonic masterpiece of that song. It has so much potential.

Totally agree with you, Rick. I always played the B-Side, before the A side, if a unknown track or not an album track. Some B-sides even charted as the unofficial A sides, and this could of been one of those. Such a GREAT hidden song,. :)

How were these never on a featured album? These are all great songs. Jeff Lynne does not know how to write a bad song. It's 2024 now, and everyone of these selections sounds better than any of the new stuff today. I guess that's the difference in Jeff Lynne and the newbie wannabes. He's a musical genius, and they just know how to act raunchy. Most of the producers today just know that cheap sells, and that's all they're interested in. Jeff could blow them all out of the water talent wise. Real music lovers still love you Jeff Lynne ❤️

The songs that were supposed to be on Secret Messages have actually been released when they came out as part of the proper double album in 2018.
Yeah, Jeff was screwed by the record company back in '83. He wanted Secret Messages to be a double album.
Some of them were on 1990 album Afterglow
The fact that the double album is better then the original says something about how shitty the record company was

Kiedyś w Polsce jeden z dziennikarzy muzycznych napisał, że album "Avalon" Roxy Music jest jak "chłodny koktajl pod palmami w upalny dzień". I zgadzałem się z nim do dziś. To co tutaj usłyszałem każe mi odstawić ten "koktajl" i zacząć jeść najwspanialsze lody z madagaskarską wanilią przygotowane przez J. Lynn'a.

Thanks for posting this. There are some good ELO tracks here. Sadly, Jeff began abandoning the strings on Discovery, and the band's decline came with that decision.
I wouldn't call it that all. Jeff was under contract to complete X number of albums by year 19??. The others were not under contract and started abandoning Jeff . When he discovered he could do it with out them, then why waste time arguing . Jeff finished his contract with "Balance of Power" yes a sarcastic name and a final shot at the record execs. . . .
The band's decline is a matter of opinion, one I do not agree with....
@@unrulyjulie4382 Understandable. I come from a position of having been a fan of the band from much earlier on. ELO's sound was synonomous with its name: Electric Light Orchestra. When the strings became less important for the sound, my interest in the band diminished. Simultaneously, ELO became ultra commercial (again, compared to its earlier sound), further diminishing my interest. Time represented at least a move away from an ultra commercial sound, one that I appreciated.

As i listened to every album from no answer 😂 or the self titled album (funny story behind that) whatever you are comfortable calling the first one, all the way to Balance of Power. It definitely felt like songs were missing and here they are. I'm guessing this had a lot to do with the record label wanting to shorten the albums, you know how they love to control content release. But what a gift all these songs and they have been added to the updated album. Now to complete jeff Lynnes's puzzle of art strung across time, maybe it will be easier with all the pieces.😅😎✌

I first listened to ELO with Roll over Beethoven in 73, I knew many of them on some of your playlists but a lot on your lists I haven;t ,I didnt know the bonus Zoom tracks and I had bought the cd when it came out So thanks for the joy found here and other of your tracks from one pre interneter.
ELO is mijn (beschamende) schuldig genoegen. Ik word door de muziek teruggekatapulteerd naar mijn jeugd in de jaren ´70 en vind dat heerlijk, zolang het niet te vaak is natuurlijk. Want met ELO slaat al snel de verveling toe hoewel er enkele nr´s zijn die bijna geniaal gecomponeerd zijn. Het gebruik van strijkers spreekt me ook erg aan, Roxy Music en Leonard Cohen vullen kun muziek (hoewel niet zo bombastisch als ELO) er ook effectief mee aan, het geeft diepte en vibrato aan een stuk muziek. Sommige van de reacties hieronder zijn echter niet serieus te nemen en doen (ongewild) afbraak aan de kwaliteit van de band. Er is een Italiaan, ene Carter (wie anders..) die Jeff Lynne zelfs een gelijke van Beethoven durft te noemen...en er is de morrige man die ELO op de plank zet samen met ABBA en de Bee Gees, ik denk dat hij (ongewild waarschijnlijk...) de spijker op zijn kop slaat. Dezelfde kwaliteit, dezelfde schare fans en er is sprake van een zekere vervlakking onderbroken door een enkele geniale eruptie.

I already knew some of the songs here, like the delightful "When Time Stood Still," but "Hello My Friend" was a new one to me, and what a revelation! Such interesting and unexpected chord changes. I also got a kick from part 2 of the song's musical callbacks to "The Diary of Horace Wimp," even though that is one of my least favorite ELO songs. "Love Changes All" sounds like it was recorded in the 80s but has a classic ELO 70s feel to it in the harmonies and string arrangements. "A Matter of Fact" has the fun feel of crossing 70s funk with 80s electronic dance music.
