    I got one a little while ago, very nice. The rim of the mounting flange has two radial holes, can use tommy bars or a C-shaped pin wrench in them to resist the nut torque.

    Hi Steve
    Enjoyed your video like the Collette's and spanner ideas, your right its best to have studs fitted, it preserves the threads in the collet chuck.
    What I have done is put a lead on the end of studs & made thick washers with a knurl on dia, just makes it easier.

    It may be me but,, isn't the hole in the body made to put a bar in to hold the chuck to undo. Great video.

    For the studs in my three and four jaw chucks I use thread lock. For my ER chuck I used stainless Allen head machine screws. The heads do not get in the way of the collet nut and they improve clamping the flange for me

    Success! Great solution, and nice mod on the bolts Steve. Those collets do make a nice addition to any lathe in my opinion, cheers!

    I have the er32 and er40 in these holders (for my larger lathe) but with the er40 I only bought collets that were not included in the er32 set. So 21mm to 25mm as I didn't want to double up on collets. Luckily my larger lathe uses the D1-4 camlock system so changing between er32 and er40 holders doesn't take too long. I also have a Chinese mini lathe with this holder but only in er32.

    Can't go wrong at the price Steve, I certainly wouldn't like to try and make one for £30 including materials! I don't think you could even purchase the raw material blanks for that in the UK. Good handle, simple design and much safer than trying to hang on to that pulley. Cheers, Jon

    I see you modified the lathe with a different motor and pulley. I'll have to find that video if you made one about that.
    I have a new mini lathe, the 7X10 Central Machinery version. I keep finding good ideas for it on your channel. :-)

    Ya I've had an identical one from ebay for nine months or so and the more i use it the better it gets.Still have not gotten around to making a 3 mt adjustable stop , spring loaded ejector so disk shaped stuff you press against a spring to the stop. ( dont break any Hardinge tm's) just throwing that idea out there , looking for the mini lathe switch my case mill with the click in the right pos. really thinking would this dc power supply make a good wire edm (for the wire) power supply That 10 mm shaft on the motor uh and the allternative a free treadmill that blows fuses a wire edm from that would be wow any of those dc motor supply's with a pulsed 20-30 khz dc at like 200 watts and the arduino controll and an edm drilled spark plug for a wire guide d' work right

    • @SteveJordan
      @SteveJordan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi I recommend the ER40 or the ER32. The ER40 obviously has a better size range though. Regards Steve

  • @ironhead65
    @ironhead65 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why would you want the Er40 over the Er32? I only have er20 at this time, and I see that ER32 matches the spindle. Maybe I am not seeing the advantage?
    Thanks as always Steve!

    • @verdantpulse5185
      @verdantpulse5185 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Er40 has a bigger through hole, up to about 1 1/16 inch, as opposed to the 3/4 inch of the Er32.

  • @mtraven23
    @mtraven23 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    0.015 runout in the collet is good enough? What do you get out of a 3 jaw? if thats not in the spindle itself, you may want to consider making an adjustable backplate to tune that thing in. collets should to better than 0.015"

    • @SteveJordan
      @SteveJordan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The run out doesn't matter as I mainly use them for 1st op bar work. You can easily knock components to run dead true as well. People are obsessed with the run out on collets when they shouldn't be.

    • @mtraven23
      @mtraven23 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SteveJordan if everything is 1st order then sure I guess it doesn't matter. but then why bother with collets? a 3 or 6 jaw scoll seems more appropriate. not trying to tell you how to do your thing, just curious why you went the route you did?
      and you say obsess, I say tune properly so it doesn't piss me off every time I chuck something.

  • @alparjuttner9095

    What are the benefits of a collet over a chuck ?

    • @alparjuttner9095
      @alparjuttner9095 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1. It is more accurate, 2. the jaws will not scratch the workpiece, 3. When machining a thin wall pipe, it won't distort it.

      Can grip on threads without crushing them.

    hi steve which mini lathe would you get if starting over, what make is yours

    • @SteveJordan
      @SteveJordan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine was an Amadeal. Warco seem to spend more time on theirs but they can be a bit higher price. They are all really very much the same and tend to need a bit of fine adjustment. I had mine in its original state for at least 5 years before changing the motor. They are great little lathes and I have made hundreds of precision components on mine.
