      I'm not an elitist. I think they should all just chill out, sit down, shut the hell up and enjoy the music they enjoy while others enjoy what they enjoy. At the end of the day, most of them don't make the music, they're not in bands, they wouldn't know what to do if they WERE in a band, and wouldn't know how to write a song if they took a tutorial with the song dictated to them. So ... just shut up. LOL! Good video!

      Kings X. Super heavy drop tunings, well written songs, killer instrumentalists. Why aren't these guys more well known ? They are all excellent singers and most of their songs have complex 3 part vocal harmonies that they pull off effortlessly live. Metal purists hear the soulful lead vocals and beautiful vocal harmonies and conclude that that's not " heavy. " What no cookie monster vocals.....these guys can't be heavy.....they can actually sing.
      Sad but true.

      Hair metal gets a lot of hate for being all about fashion, girls, love, partying, booze, and drugs. Even though, the music is fun and heavy and some bands like Skid Row write songs about different topics, the elitists (like Metallica ironically) bash them for not being heavy enough.

    I recommended Ghost to this couple a few weeks ago because they like metal and they actually vibe with the whole satanic symbology stuff and one of them told me "that band is for posers only, they pretend to be satanic but they aren't actually it" and I was astounded because not only they rank up bands accordingly to how "satanic" they were irl but also they recommended me a real satanic band: Slayer. @VogonPoet67 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Same here. Grew up listening to Zeppelin and Sabbath in the 70s and Maiden and Metallica in the 80s. I think people get too hung up on creating strict boundaries around what defines the metal genre. Music of all genres, including metal, constantly evolves and changes. Shoot, the fact that there are dozens and dozens of sub-genres of metal indicates the futility of trying to carve the boundaries in stone. I don't know why anyone would want to do that anyway. If your definition of metal means that it has to always have these ten specific characteristics, then it's all going to eventually sound exactly the same and after a while will bore you to death.

    • @TobenVonFreiheit
      @TobenVonFreiheit 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@VogonPoet67 Exactly!! Without growth and evolution, everything stagnates and dies. Look at what happened with the oversaturation of hair bands in the 80s. They all ended up just being clones of one another and the genre pretty much died out.

      @lorddavid3dxw 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Not even just metal. Music as a whole. Who cares what you like? As long as you're not playing it at full blast from your phone on a bus, it doesn't matter.
      Share your music loves with friends. Don't view any of your listening habits as "guilty pleasures". Because they shouldn't be. So what if you listen to Ozzy and Aqua? Who cares if you listen to Snoop Dogg and Smile.dk? Listen to what you enjoy.
      I'm a big rock and metal fan. My favourite band however is cheesy synth-pop band Spray (Check out I Wonder Where The Wonder Goes for a great bit of not taking themselves seriously and just having fun). It not only isn't a guilty pleasure, it's stated proudly. Anyone who thinks they can look down on me for what I choose to listen to and enjoy is instantly not worth listening to in the first place and places themselves beneath me by their own actions.
      Never put people down for simply enjoying something. With the caveat that it must not harm others too. Whether it's music, TV, hobbies, books, whatever. Be happy people have something to do that's fun, and support them in being proud of that thing, even if it's not for you. That's fine. You aren't required to like everything, you just don't have to put down things others enjoy.

    Also Linkin Park was a long-standing running joke to a lot of people between the years of 2008 to 2017 when it took the tragic death of a legendary singer for people to understand that those "edgy" lyrics weren't disingenuous.

    My son introduced me to Sabaton, because he knew I liked Metal/Hard Rock and I'm a huge history buff, back around 2016 and I've been a huge fan ever since. Sabaton is my most played playlist on Spotify, and I've learned quite a bit of history I didn't know about from listening to them, along with their TH-cam channel Saboton History. From listening to Sabaton, I've also got into Power Metal, like DragonForce, Battle Beast, Beast in Black, Dynazty, LoveBites (these girls can play), HammerFall, etc.
    Growing up in the 70's and 80's, I listened to primarily what is known today as Classic Rock and Hard Rock, bands like KISS, VanHalen (and VanHagar), Journey, Boston, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Meatloaf, Rush, The Police, Genesis and such. It was Metallica's Black Album that really got me into Metal, because it was a great album and a good introduction to Metal, but Sabaton was my first introduction to Power Metal, and I found I liked the genre, along with Epic/Symphonic Metal, though Thrash Metal is still what I consider my foundation of Metal. Don't care for Dark/Black/Death Metal, or Screamo, I guess I'm too old and not angry enough for that to appeal to me, and I can't sing along to demon/cookie monster growling, hurts my throat.

If your music, look, mannerisms, stage presence, fuck everything doesn't all add together to being trve kvlt, you're posers, and that's the problem with Ghost, they're taking the black metal aesthetic and playing music that heavy enough or whathaveyou to fit the aesthetic. I guess it’s just the success that Deafheaven has had with the post-black/blackgaze sound where they’ll jump on Deafheaven’s case but leave bands like Alcest alone or completely ignore that groups like Agalloch pioneered the sound and are still revered.

      I like Metallica, but I hate all the other bands on this list so I guess that makes me an elitist haha however, I would say that I absolutely do not understand why Deafheaven are so hated. I honestly think that if they dressed like Amon Amarth but their music was exactly the same as it is in reality, then half the people who claim to hate them now, wouldn’t. Why should blast beats and screaming only be for people who worship Satan and/or dress a certain way. I really like most of Deafheaven’s music and they’re combining ideas no one else combined in quite the same way before, so for that they should be applauded. I remember reading a thing a while ago saying Deafheaven were “dumbing down” metal to appeal to indie audiences, but that would imply that those audiences were always separate in the first place, which they were SO not. I grew up loving Bathory as much as My Bloody Valentine, so to hear a band that was influenced by both was pretty sweet for me. Anyway rant over 🤘

    It felt kind of weird seeing Dimmu Borgir on that list. I absolutely remember back in 2003 them being a group that was hated from both sides of the spectrum. Fans of more “mainstream” metal at the time thought they were just some garbage band you’d find one copy of their cd at the local music store. Fans of more extreme or underground metal thought they were some garbage band selling “extreme” to the suburban mall kids. 5FDP and BFMV I never cared for, but they don’t deserve to be hated for what they aren’t. Being unoriginal/formulaic or chasing trends aren’t necessarily bad things. Change is inevitable, but sometimes (paradoxically) holding on to the way you are or how you do things really is the best way to go.

    This was a good list and definitely needs a part 2.
    A few bands that I've heard cop flack from metal elitists;
    Disturbed for basically being a glorified cover band even though they have plenty of good material of their own.
    Alestorm for being a gimmicky band with pirate metal.
    Nickelback for whatever reason they have (though technically I think they're rock but jury is out on that)
    Skillet for the fact that they're a Christian metal band and that religion shouldn't be allowed in metal.
    Personally 3 of the 4 bands i mentioned I'm a fan of and I can even tolerate some of Nickelback's material but when it comes down to it as one person said in the comments like what you like in music but I'd also add that if you're not willing to take constructive criticism of your favourite bands don't dish it out too others either.

    Metallica is the band that has been making me process through the last thirty years that artists need to change and that it is ok to love one period of a bands life and then learn to let go of the feeling of betrayal when they move onto something else they have to go explore. Through interviews, I have regained much of my respect for them and have understood that my fear of change and resistance to letting go were the real problem and it was my problem. I still do not like their Music much since the self titled album but now I understand that artists make whatever art they need to make when they make it, and I can respect that.

      Well fucking said.
      Some bands can make the same music year after year. Some can't. They feel stagnant if they do. They feel the need to evolve. You can either evolve with them, evolve yourself on another direction or stay the same and let them move on.

      Yeah same thing happened with Sonne by Rammstein (I even made an anti-gatekeeping comment on TH-cam albeit also serving as a friendly warning that it’s a bit of an atypical song from them). Not saying TikTok is good mind you, but it’s sadly the laws of the universe that if anything gets popular people will be embarrassingly protective of it. Weirdest one being Americans that act like it’s this underground thing which most Europeans respond with “are you serious?”

    As a metal fan from a small town in India it was hard to hear any different form of music other than Bollywood and whatever MTv would throw at you in the 90s & 2000s. Metallica was the gateway band because they were played on Indian TV and cassettes were available of their music. Sell out or not Metallica has done a great service towards metal in bringing in new fans or any band that decides to " sell out". It's better financially for the band and gets more people interested (quality of music is another discussion).

      Yep Metallica was the big one that brought the main stream people over to heavy metal. The big jump in popularity of heavy metal all those years ago is thanks to Metallica.

Me being a fan of Mushroomhead and Nine Inch Nails, I LOVE the synthesizer and keyboards in Dimmu Borgir's music. Doesn't matter how much money a band has. The music they put out is the most important factor.

      They've been saying Dimmu sold out since EDT because they sang in English. Then they said they sold out when they released PEM because of the solos, clean vocals, and cover songs. Then they said they sold out when Progenies of the Great Apocalypse became an Mtv hit. They've always got new reasons to sh*t on Dimmu. To me, the only good reason to sh*t on them is that they haven't released a good album since In Sorte Diaboli, which I was not really a fan of.
      I met Astanuu in 09. He's an Aussie. He went by an alias but we frequented around the same circles and someone said he was Astanuu and I gushed about how much of a fan I was.
