I love that the "women can't do metal" thing is still such a big argument, when so many of them will Stan Spiritbox or Jinjer or Lacuna Coil in the same sentence, or even better yet Arch Enemy
@KissOfVanity666 there's plenty more, those were just on top of my head at the time lol, and even in the modern space we have Poppy as well like thr video said. Then there's Babymetal... like there's so much lol
yeah, i agree that the extreme negativity is harming the hard rock/metal scene. theres also a weird pride around being a fan of metal which is odd. like youre just listening to something you didn't actually ACHIEVE anything. you aren't tougher, cooler, or more advanced if you listen to metal. i've seen metal heads laugh at people because of their tastes, which is so lame, you just hit play on your itunes, man.
@@RockedNet I can't always necessarily explain why I like what I like, but even not being able to explain it is better than just regurgitating the same old elitist talking points about what's metal and what isn't. Even liking something just because it speaks to your heart shows integrity and independent thinking--or maybe the better word is independent feeling. Being able to articulate why to someone else's satisfaction isn't necessarily needed for that. As long as your reason isn't solely based on a band's popularity, lack thereof, or metal cred according to someone else's checklist. Whether that's metal elitists', or the equivalent in any other music genre.
The Anime fandom was like this too, but it's really strange you know? They've turned on Akira because Akira became critically acclaimed and successful. But they didn't turn on Dragonball Z aside from just being annoyed about it. They didn't like Naruto and Bleach for like the longest time. But they're always propping up Ghost in the Shell as a masterpiece when even that was successful. It's like the standards keep fluctuating. Goes to show it's all subjective.
@@frozyre7854 I've noticed that. Recently been getting into anime and asking for recommendations is a freakin' minefield. As a long time horror fan...the elitist attitude among the fans is insane. ANY form of mainstream popularity and large swaths of fans will look down on the product. I wonder if they feel protective of something that when others enter their space they get frazzled.
As a proud metalhead AND professional wrestling fan, I do apologize for the fringe sects of my fandoms. Not everybody sucks...as much as they do...a lot of us suck...just not as much
It's very much akin to the expert; "the expert knows more and more about less and less until they know all there is to know about nothing". Metal elitists like bands so obscure, they've yet to exist. Everything else is poser bullshit.
some band performed in another fed, the lead singer had his face painted black with a red stripe on it and they insisted its black face. but then they defend michael hayes and call him based.
Which is especially funny because Black Sabbath is often credited as the first metal band ever lol and there's 0 doubt that they created doom metal, they were making subgenres before subgenres of the sort existed lol
The complaints about Poppy transitioning to metal remind me a lot of the hate Job For a Cowboy got when they first came on the scene. They started as a deathcore band, and when they followed up their first EP with a more death metal album, rather than take solace in the fact that the band was playing a style they like, the elitists complained that JFAC had no business playing death metal when they were previously deathcore and that it “tainted” them. I don’t even really like JFAC, but I found that to be so bogus. Also, surprised there was no mention of Bring the Noise with Anthrax, considering it laid the foundation for the eeevil nu metal.
I don't understand how elitists are gonna hate on deathcore and then hate on a band that transitioned into a more well liked genre in their shitty community
Kittie. Anytime I watch a video that discusses Kittie, there are always men in the comments talking about how much they “suck.” I’m sorry, but Kittie fucking rocks! Misogyny is still alive and kicking in 2024 apparently.
When it comes to Kittie they are undoubtedly pioneers in metal for the time they started to make a name for themselves in the genre. Despite this, and having worked in the industry and briefly interacted with them during that time, there is merit to say that they simply "bought" their way into the industry. I don't agree with people who say they suck, but I don't disagree with their feelings for their misplaced judgment.
@@frozyre7854 I love In This Moment, but I feel like they do get hate, which i pretty sad because they´re pretty chill and never had any real controversies
Even as someone who isn't a fan of Black Veil Brides and Motionless in White, I can't for the life of me imagine losing sleep over them due to petty hate or for not being "metal enough".
I agree with you 100%, I'm not a fan of a few of the bands on this list....but to throw hate at them for not being "metal" enough is really childish. I still have memories of a friend when I was growing up who said things like "Have you heard of this underground band Lost Prophets"....then that got big and he hated them lol
I'm looking up Poppy on Spotify right now because this is the first I've heard of her. Wow each song in her top 10 have millions of listens. Some almost reaching 100 million. Definitely going to have to check her out tomorrow because I love genre blending metal.
She has a (literal) Cult following,I’ve been a huge fan of hers since she was making weird art videos and bubblegum pop music that felt sinister in contrast to the vibe,I was thrilled when she started doing metal as was always into the heavier side of music.
I remember seeing her back when she was doing those strange avante garde videos a long time ago, then was quite confused when I saw her pop up as a featured artist on a song I was listening to. I haven't really looked into this newer stuff of hers, but interesting to see how she changed genres the way she did.
Poppy goes fuckin hard, I was supposed to see her where she was gonna open for deftones, got cancelled as it was a week after the major shutdowns started happening for covid, can't wait to get a chance to see her live
@@RockedNetto these haters, a band can be around for 10 years but because the hater didn’t know about them before they got big, they obviously are an industry plant. This is the way those minds work.
The worst elitist is the one who try so hard to not sound elitist, but at the time they say "I just don't see the appeling" then they start to have the worst take about why the band is overrated and just make "Forgettable" music
The hell . . . Anthrax?! To be fair, all of the big four have a lot of haters, except for Slayer. Still Anthrax are so chill, and they are all about good times. What's there to hate?
I have a feeling that one modern artist that elitists will seethe with venom over that’s been getting a bit of recent attention thanks to social media and constant touring is Scene Queen. Think about it. This blonde woman in pink outfits doing metalcore fusions and over the top lyrics and having fun with a lot of her stuff, elitists hate that stuff.
My favorite way to trigger a metal elitist: my favorite metal band is Dream Theater. Some of the Anthrax hate is retroactive, wondering how they're considered part of the Big 4. At the time that term was coined, there was absolutely no doubt they were in. Looking at album peaks through the 80s (initial releases), Metallica was highest, then Anthrax and Megadeth were about equal and slightly behind. But then Metallica hit it pretty big with ...And Justice, and then the black album blew everything up. Megadeth had a huge hit with Countdown to Extinction and really took off. And Anthrax released Sound of White Noise... which was my favorite of all those albums, but just didn't connect. Their paths have greatly diverged since then. But up until then, when thrash was being established, Anthrax was absolutely among the biggest (and in my opinion the best).
Y’know while I do like Babymetal (I’m not like a major Stan mind you but I do somewhat enjoy their music unironically and Babyklok in Orlando is among one of the best concerts I’ve been to), I at least *sort of* get the backlash since they’re a spin-off of a pop idol group and it kind of took a while for them to put out “non-kawaii” music as shown with the album The Other One which obviously isn’t gonna sway the long time haters. The backlash to Poppy on the other hand, I just straight up don’t understand
I started to wonder if I was a metal elitist, because over the last few months of getting more into older metal music that I never listened to before, learning the many subgenres, what I liked and didn't like, I found that I disliked the same kind of stuff that I've heard elitists are supposed to dislike, as well as liking stuff that elitists are supposed to be fans of. But honestly, I think it's just what sounds good to my ears versus what doesn't, I'm not the kind of person to bitch about bands I don't like, or say no one should listen to them. Music taste is deeply subjective. I've been a huge fan of Tool for many years, but recently I've become a fan of thrash and traditional heavy metal, my favourites are Judas Priest, Slayer, Megadeth, Overkill, Kreator, and even more recently I've gone down the doom metal and black metal rabbit holes, and I love Candlemass, Bathory, Dimmu Borgir, Crypt Sermon, and even cross-subgenre stuff like Behemoth (blackened death metal). That said - I hate metalcore. That's not because anyone has told me to - I didn't even know there was a name for the particular type of modern American metal that's been the mainstream for the last 15 or so years. In fact I thought I was just not into metal as much as I got older, but discovered that was not the case the first time I listened to Slayer 😂 I can't listen to Nickelback, because they sound like Country to me, and that's one genre that I just can't stand. I WANTED to like Sleep Token, I'm a big fan of Ghost, so someone recommended I check out Sleep Token. I thought they looked really cool when I saw images of them. But their music is just... meh? For me, anyway, I get incredibly bored sitting through a ST song, waiting for the song to "kick in" but it's just like an 8 minute long intro with a couple of brief build ups which sound like they might be getting somewhere but then it dies back into an intro thing again 😕 Slipknot - this is sad, ok, I was about 16 or 17 when they got popular in the nu-metal years, and all my friends were into them, Korn, and Marilyn Manson. I tried so hard to like all three of those, I listened to them over and over, but I just was not into them at all. I didn't like very much nu-metal to be fair, I loved Linkin Park and Disturbed, but couldn't get into much else. But I pretended that I liked them 🤣 I even bought a Slipknot hoodie and wore it frequently so that I fit in with my friends that liked them. I wouldn't do that now of course, but kids are dumb and insecure. Even Anthrax, right, 😂 I don't dislike Anthrax, but when I first got into thrash and I'd been listening to Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, my friend said "check out the final band of the big four, Anthrax!" and she sent me this track, and it was okay, but nothing from Anthrax has ended up on a playlist. I think they're a bit too punk for what I was after listening to (I went through a punk phase in my early 20s and I'm over it). It's also not gender related for me - I'm a woman, and was born female. I think maybe that it's just the kind of sound that tends to be pumped out by modern bands that falls into genres such as metalcore, djent, etc that maybe just doesn't sound enjoyable to people that prefer older types of metal? That doesn't give anyone an excuse to bully people or bands, just because they don't think it sounds good. I didn't grow up listening to metal of any kind, and I'd never listened to Slayer or Judas Priest before last year, but hearing them for the first time was like I'd found god or something 😂 Anyway. That was way too long and ramble, but thought I'd offer my perspective as a woman in her late 30s who has listened to a crazy amount of metal of all eras and genres in the last year - and has come out liking and disliking the same stuff that elitists do, but without any bias or agenda 😂
I agree with all these takes, pretty much the same kinds of metal I like and dislike too. Also, I don't think this makes us "elitists" as this video is saying. It's just a matter of liking what we like, and if it just so happens to align with what elitists enjoy, so what? Keep rockin'! 🤟
Another amazing video as always. Would love to seea possible pt 2 to rockstars that could be pro wrestlers Babyface and Heel edition. I think that you should definitely include Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda as a tag team in that babyface video, and also Chino Moreno and maybe Abe Cunnuingham or Frank Delgado or Steph Carpenter as tag team for the heel version. (Espcecially go with their White Pony era look,) A duo of skate rats, being sleazy assholes would be interesting to hear you talk about. Keep up the great work.
I have a neighbor with a "Motionless in White" sticker on their car that looks like a "My Little Pony" logo and i had no idea that was a band until now.
I actually saw Poppy open for Avenged Sevenfold back in March and it was surprisingly good set, I’m not really familiar with her music so I wasn’t sure how I’d like it (I’m not an elitist at all because I find them incredibly annoying but like I said I didn’t know what her music would be like) though I was pleasantly surprised by how good she sounded for someone her age (I also didn’t know she was only four years older than me so it was also kinda cool to learn how close in age we are)
Duuuuude, my first show I went to myself (aka without parents or whatever) had trivium on second bill and they fuckin killed it, Corey was sitting at the merch booth talking with their merch guy while I was the only one in line and apologized for holding me up then had a full on convo with me, I was 13. Dude was nice as hell
Sleep Token wasn't for me. I did listen to TMBTE and didn't like it all that much; it felt like it was using different colors than usual to paint by numbers, but most of the time, said colors didn't work well together. I couldn't find myself gravitating towards much of what it had to offer, sadly. Despite that, I do appreciate that they're trying to shake things up, as modern metal needs more of that, and I can tell everyone involved is talented enough to make something great, so I'll keep an eye out for em.
I was completely unaware Trivium, of all the metalcore bands, is an elitist target (outside of metalcore in general being a target) That being said, in response to that last bit, I don't count myself as a fan of Sleep Token, Not because they're not "heavy enough" or "true metal" though. It's just not my thing. I massively respect what they do, and can see why people like them, it's just not my thing
Trivium is so fun! I saw them when they toured with avatar and it was a blast. They had fun banter on Twitter during the time too that I adored. Motionless in white don't deserve the hate either! There's something special about seeing them on halloween with a metal burlesque group opening for them. (I think they were called Little Miss Nasty.)
I had a kitten named Chester. Sadly he got ran over by a car. Hoping and praying that my little guy is rocking out with Chester Bennington in the afterlife.
@frozyre7854 Yup. They're relatively split on the black album because while many fans consider it to be the bands "best work" - or at least when they peaked, many are still butthurt because they consider the black album to be when the band "sold out for mainstream popularity". That's honestly what it really boils down to for elitists. They hate when artists they like get popular with "non metalheads" because the elitist no longer has the band all to themselves, and they no longer feel special for knowing about this cool obscure band that you (general "you") have never heard of. And that's the irony of it all! They like being hipsters about the music they listen to, but they hate the idea of hipsters because everyone decided back in 2004/2005 that hipsters were the worst most annoying people alive.
I've tried listening to most of the bands on the list and I'm just not a fan. But I'm 40+ and I like what I like. Not hate. Not elitist. Just old. Sleep Token definitely grabbed my attention, though. Became a big fan of them when they blew up.
Nobody hates metal more than metalheads and most of them cant write their own tunes or even play an instrument. they hate on what they cant do and will never be.
It really seems like people listen to music for how it makes them look, not how it makes them feel. Being a metal elitist and never growing out of the angry at everything in pain phase is just stunted growth.
Other bands that I've seen plenty of elitists hate on are; Parkway Drive Korn Megadeth Opeth Dream Theater Meshuggah On the flip side bands I've seen elitists have a tantrum over if anyone dare criticise them are; Linkin Park Deftones Candlemass Slayer Bolt Thrower Emperor Transylvanian Hunger
Anthrax's appearance on "Married ... With Children" was awesome. Once the band started eating 'mystery meat' (which even Al wouldn't touch), things got crazy!
One band I see get hate thrown their way is Avatar. Just saw them in Portland and fucking hell I love these guys. They are a prime example is you can have clean production sound and still be fucking heavy as all hell. I’ve met Tim and seen the band 6 times and they still amaze me at every show.
Johannes is one of the best baritones in Metal. They're all talented musicians + showmen, but those screams tho (and his voice is beautiful when singing clean).
Slipknot, strangely, have also had a bit of mainstream attention in the UK. Corey Taylor was even a panellist on an episode of the comedy quiz show QI (and was pretty funny, I have to say!). Also, Chester is adorable.
Never understood any of this. Anthrax may not be my favourite band, but they make good music, and clearly other people like them plenty. There's more than enough room for all tastes in metal
Slipknot: I imagine that association with nu-metal in the 90s never helped with the purists. I never really got into the Slipknot thing, but Bill McClintock's mashups where he matches Corey Taylor's vocals over B-52s or Spice Girls actually shows off how good Taylor is. Anthrax: I've been a fan since literally 1987 and they STILL rock my little socks off. Even the 90s material with John Bush is pretty dang good. The only thing I'll say is the Big Four probably should be the Big Six and we need to give Exodus and Testament our ears, too. All great bands. Poppy: recently heard for the first time after seeing an album mentioned in a RateYourMusic list. Honestly not bad at all! I do like the genre hopping and felt the songs were pretty good overall. Good for her for getting attention in a difficult time to ever be heard by more than 3 people. Deafheaven: I love that they piss off the TR00 KVLT types. I prefer some other blackgaze artists more, but I'm very glad Deafheaven kicked that door wide open. That style of metal really appeals to me. Sleep Token: Another band I have enjoyed, though perhaps I do need to see them live for that full experience. Pretty sure some people are mad solely because they got popular and with "normies". No opinions on the other bands. I admit metalcore hasn't done anything for me, but I find the best use of my energy is to listen to new stuff that does appeal to me and not worry about things that don't.
I'm a huge Poppy fan and I just don't understand the hate. She is incredible live too, puts on a great show. Too many chronically online incels out there.
I don't hate any of these bands. Some of them I do like, but I've either heard other bands within their subgenre that I resonate with more, or think other bands are more interesting entirely. It's also an issue of time which determines how much of their material I feel like digging into. For example, Anthrax is cool, but I honestly do like the other Big 4 bands, Testament, Exodus, Overkill, and even modern thrash bands like Havok, Municipal Waste, and Enforced more.
I found out about the Anthrax hate a couple nights ago, at a Mr. Bungle show. When Mike did a "Dad Joke Competition" between the band members, every time he'd have the audience react for Scott, one dude behind me would boo and yell things like "fuck Scott!" It was goddamn hilarious to me
That closing statement, about bands "Not going heavy enough," is something I also think is plaguing the rock industry. There is this weird obsession with, "MORE screams!" and ""HEAVIER!" is EVERYWHERE... I don't get it... Also, Trivium is the band that made me start to come back to metal, and Sleep Token provide a fresh new sound, so hate all you want: I'm a fan!
Im pretty okay with what a lot of people consider metal, as long as metal is the dominant genre of music in their sound, and sometimes the line between hard rock and metal can be a thin one. However i feel the metal plays too small of a part in Sleep Tokens nusic to consider them metal. If i was a metal band and I added some symphonic elements to my sound then i wouldnt call myself a classical musician. Its the same with Sleep Token. Theyre basically a pop/R&B artist who occassionally puts a heavy section in a song
I think people who hate Anthrax just hate fun. I saw them with Black Label Society last year, and while not the best concert I've been to, easily one of the most fun.
I remember when I was a kid I joined a bunch of forums where I had similar tastes to and one was a metal forum and I kept posting about Slipknot because that was the band I was into at the time and people kept complaining and going like “this is what real metal sounds like”. I deleted my account almost immediately lol
Hot take that gives people an aneurysm: Anthrax (and by extension SOD) have done more for heavy music than Slayer. Slayer pioneered fast music, and they're great at it. But Anthrax bought a greater punk influence and humour, pioneered rap metal, were foundational in blast beats in metal, and helped pioneer crossover thrash, all while making high-quality alternative rock and metal in the 90s and continuing to make high quality thrash in the 21st century
Those Elitist are so metal they don't even like their own favorite genre. I just ignore them because I've noticed they randomly say something like "Green Jell-O/Jelly was really underrated".
My slipknot is probably going to be the Look Out Your Window album. But its screwy that selftitled was music I listened to growing up. I'm psyched they added prosthetics to the setlist
I’m a pretty big bvb fan, I discovered them at a very vital and dark time in my life. Listening to their first three albums along with motionless in white creatures, falling in reverse the drug in me is you, Killswitch Engage, all that remains, alesana and the band name escapes me right now but the album looking for exits got me through a lot. Anyway I don’t think Andy Biersack and Chad Kroger sound alike, Chad whines and Andy sings from the depths of his soul with a purpose. Also Andy’s voice is a little deeper, listen closely and you’ll hear it. The only similarity in their voices is they’re both naturally gritty but in my opinion Andy’s grit is more tasteful. Don’t get me wrong nickelback has some good music but their peak was all the right reasons.
I’m not a big fan of Sleep Token but after listening to and loving some songs from Take Me Back to Eden and Alkaline it’s beyond ridiculous that these metal elitists hate this band. Willing to bet that they listen to bands like Attila and Emmure
Ok here’s my feelings on these bands. Slipknot-literally my favorite band ever, they are who my dad and uncles listened to as I grew up and they definitely made me the metalhead I am today. Bad Omens-I really like them. My favorite album is still their first, but the following 2 I do very much enjoy. They’re not a band that I’d say is one of my absolute favorites, but definitely a band I’d like to go see live. Anthrax-They’re ok. Thrash Metal isn’t really my cup of tea, I don’t hate it but it’s not my favorite sub-genre by any means. Anthrax for me is the third best band out of the big 4. Poppy and Deafheaven-I’ve heard the names but not the music so I don’t really have an opinion. But with the description of Deafheaven being black metal, I assume I wouldn’t care for them because I really don’t like black metal. Trivium-my third favorite band (just behind Slipknot and Avenged Sevenfold). All the members just seem really cool. I love the stuff Matt Heafy does outside of Trivium whether that’s appearing in other songs or his TH-cam and twitch channel or his EP with Jared Dines. Motionless In White-one of my absolute favorite bands. They’re a band I was able to get my friend (who is a girl, metal elitists) into them and Ice Nine Kills so now we have a bond in music that we like for when we hang out together. Literally just a band of good dudes who make awesome music. Architects-I don’t really listen to them too much but the songs of theirs I do like I freaking love. I’m more fond of their newer stuff (2018 and onward) than their older stuff. Black Veil Brides-Might lose some people here but I don’t like their music. Haven’t been a fan, probably will never be a fan. I’ve tried listening to them and it’s just not for me. Sleep Token-If I didn’t lose people with BVB, then I will here, I also don’t really care for Sleep Token. It’s all too slow and mellow for my liking. I’m fine if there’s slower songs, I typically love ballads, but like the pacing of every sleep token song is just eh for me. I listen to their songs and all I think is that it’s not bad, but not good in my opinion. It’s weird because I don’t hate it but the whole time I’m questioning if I do or don’t.
For some reason, Sleep Token has been difficult for me to get into. However, I am willing to give it another go based on live shows and such. Is it worth another shot?
I have tried and tried and tried to like Sleep Token. I just don't get it. They pretty much sound like crap to me. I'm definitely not elitist I love bands like Ghost, Sabaton, and even Nickelback so yeah I'm pretty open to everything. I think there's a flip side of the elitism too. There are people that constantly will call you an elitist or a gatekeeper simply because you Express that you don't like a certain band. Never let anyone make you feel like you have to like something either.
@@NormanDoll-rr6lh Same with me, I feel like they take the most boring parts of each genre they try to mix. I can appreciate what they are trying to do but I just don’t think they execute it properly especially with the pacing and payoff of their songs. In almost every song of theirs I’ve heard it’s like 3 minutes of build up and then when you think the tension will be released there’s like 5 seconds of payoff then back to the slow part.
I'm still going by what I said in the comments that previewed this video and I'm referencing to something I've said many videos back, probably the first video of this. Metal Elitists are committed to Death Metal, Black Metal, Metalcore .etc that all fit that mold. Any band that is separated from that sphere, is considered hated by the elitists, doesn't matter who it is. They'll make exceptions to Slayer, sometimes Motorhead (but Lemmy classifies his band as Rock/Hard Rock so I'll take his word) and more narrow exceptions. But their bottom line still is there for them. Not on this list but I'll say that - they LOATHE Power Metal bands, it seems like. Sabaton, Powerwolf, Orden Ogan (sometimes are exceptional, depends who) and Dragonforce. Mainly because they find it all incredibly cheesy and cringe. But yeah, anything that's not the genres I've listed above - guaranteed to be hated.
Another huge band that metal elitists shit on is Spiritbox, mostly due to the pop influences and the folks who miss IWABO. I also want to point out the amount of hate In Flames gets, mostly from people who have only listened to their 90s output. While I can admit not all of their stuff works for me personally, the amount of vitriol they get even being one of the major forces in the Gothenburg scene is unwarranted.
I've never really listened to Poppy, Black Veil Brides, Bad Omens, Deafheaven, or Motionless in White. There's probably some elitism going on there, but mostly it's because I either didn't think they'd be my jam based on their style, or I didn't like what little I'd heard. There's no hate though, just disinterest. We all like what we like, and I think most metal elitists absolutely hate most of the things I like as well.
I think Noah Sebastian is a great vocalist, I just thought the songwriting on the last album was lackluster. Never liked Deafheaven or Trivium, but especially with Trivium it’s easy to see their talent it’s just not my thing. Chris Motionless doesn’t get enough credit as a vocalist, but their “inspirations” bleed through so much in their music is basically copyright infringement. There’s been elements of Architects sound change I like and others I don’t. I wish they’d make their current touring replacement for Josh a full time member. He subbed for him on the North American Holy Hell tour and was in Bleed From Within for a bit.
I hate at least half of these bands. Not because I'm an elitist, but because my tastes in music have this odd, overcomplicated set of rules that makes it impossible for me to say that I like one genre or not because I will still dislike a lot of bands in that genre. Other mfs can like what they like, but I just personally don't like them
I like all of the bands mentioned in this video. But then again, I'm not picky. When it comes to metal, rock, or even punk. Hell, I throw in Hardstyle and dubstep into the mix. Other bands, I like that elitist more than than likely won't like, or Asking Alexandria, Pathfinder, Echoes of Eternity, Edge of Attack, scream at the sun.
From what I’ve been seeing, add knocked loose to this list 🤦♂️ I’ve seen people calling them radio metal now and the classic things of a band getting big. Despite You Won’t Go being arguably their heaviest. Like I am absolutely baffled that this can happen to a band getting heavier, but just because they got big those words get carelessly thrown around. Strange world.
I was there for the Killswitch anthrax Orlando show. Anthrax was the best part of the show tbh kse is kinda overrated for me. I also had one of those elitists behind me talking shit about anthrax the entire time they were on stage.
I went back to listen to TMBTE and while I still think it’s super overrated, it turned out to be a better album than on first listening. Still not a fan, but I do get it
Every time I layback and enjoy Astronoid it occurs to me there have got to be metal elitists keyboard-screaming about how the group are metalling wrong.
I've noticed elitists hating on Nightwish and symphonic metal in general. (Don't remember them from your first video) Also I love Anthrax. They deserve no hate.
My absolute favorite band that seems to be hated by elitists/purists is Mortician :D For a band often regarded as a "knuckledragger band" because of how simple the songs are and the complete lack of solos Roger, Will and Sam can basically snap their fingers and completely fill any venue way faster than any of the bands that bitch about them ever will :D
I had thought the Slipknot hate from metalheads had dwindled a lot over time actually. Kinda like with Nickelback, but while they now get lot of "they're not really that bad" i thought Slipknot gets straight up praise from some of the same audience who used to shit on them. But of course there are so many different takes on the band as they are surely one of the most famous metal bands ever...
I wonder if part of the hate for Sleep Token is because they *le gasp* write love songs (as pointed out in a very click-baity video titled ‘the real reason Sleep Token is popular’, as if writing love songs makes them inherently inferior, or that that’s all they do. anyways, more for me to enjoy!

I love that the "women can't do metal" thing is still such a big argument, when so many of them will Stan Spiritbox or Jinjer or Lacuna Coil in the same sentence, or even better yet Arch Enemy
Jo Bench in Bolt Thrower. Need we say more?
Don't forget in this moment otep and Kittie.
@KissOfVanity666 there's plenty more, those were just on top of my head at the time lol, and even in the modern space we have Poppy as well like thr video said. Then there's Babymetal... like there's so much lol
Don’t forget Butcher Babies, damn their good always
I had no idea anybody hated on Anthrax, freaking love those guys 🤣
Right? Hating on Anthrax is like hating a carnival or monster truck.
You know, I don't hate them, but they aren't my favorite. I'm just not a big fan of the lead singer.
Yeah for real. I'm a big fan of KSE myself but I can't imagine going to see them and thinking you're too good for Anthrax.
Same! Saw them last year (with Exodus mind you) and they became my favorite of the big 4
@@dyrr836 That show in 2017 still sticks out in my mind when the guy did that. He did it mid-crowd also. Not just against the wall.
Just imagine what elitists thought of V.A.N
They would have scoffed at the entire Sick New World lineup to the point of passing out.
I like that song
@@brianban110 I know its awesome.
The Drain was also pretty good.

yeah, i agree that the extreme negativity is harming the hard rock/metal scene. theres also a weird pride around being a fan of metal which is odd. like youre just listening to something you didn't actually ACHIEVE anything. you aren't tougher, cooler, or more advanced if you listen to metal. i've seen metal heads laugh at people because of their tastes, which is so lame, you just hit play on your itunes, man.
Like what you like. Be able to explain why. Don't harass others to the point of obsession.
Ah yes, the classic "mainstream attention = hate" formula. Fandoms are so stupid.
Not everybody sucks...as much as they do...a lot of us suck...just not as much
"B-But Metalcore isn't Metal!"
And then they fail to explain why Metalcore doesn't count as Metal music.
I tried to get into sleep token, i really did. But i just couldn't do it, im not gonna hate on someone for liking them but ST is just not my thing
I'm also not super into Sleep Token, but The Summoning is one of my favorite recent songs from anybody.
I would suggest a list of bands that metal elitists actually like, but I’m becoming more and more convinced they don’t really like anything.
It's very much akin to the expert; "the expert knows more and more about less and less until they know all there is to know about nothing".
Metal elitists like bands so obscure, they've yet to exist. Everything else is poser bullshit.

I would agree that IWC dorks are worse. A terrible race to the bottom but, they barely win.
You are 100% correct. Good call.
some band performed in another fed, the lead singer had his face painted black with a red stripe on it and they insisted its black face. but then they defend michael hayes and call him based.
The definition of what is metal for the elitists is so narrow that Black Sabbath might be considered not metal enough for them. 🤷♀️
Metal elitist have been reclassifying Black Sabbath as rock and not metal...
Facts.
Which is especially funny because Black Sabbath is often credited as the first metal band ever lol and there's 0 doubt that they created doom metal, they were making subgenres before subgenres of the sort existed lol
@@dishwaser Exactly. It just shows how inane these elitists actually are.
@@pustulio1 this has never happened
I still say they need a better name if they're gonna be death metal than Job For A Cowboy. It sounds too country.
I wonder if they forget who fronts In This Moment or Arch Enemy.
@@frozyre7854 Arch Enemy gets a lot of hate (mostly just Alissa) too.
@@frozyre7854 I love In This Moment, but I feel like they do get hate, which i pretty sad because they´re pretty chill and never had any real controversies
Even as someone who isn't a fan of Black Veil Brides and Motionless in White, I can't for the life of me imagine losing sleep over them due to petty hate or for not being "metal enough".
eh. I don't really like BvB either. But they really don't register on my musical landscape.
Saying bad omens got their big break last year is kinda astounding because they’ve been popular for years
Popular, sure, but in 2022 was when they exploded beyond being popular within scene bands.
@@RockedNetto these haters, a band can be around for 10 years but because the hater didn’t know about them before they got big, they obviously are an industry plant. This is the way those minds work.
What I’ve learned from this list is that metal elitists have no idea what they want in their music.
Sounds like the Venn diagram for metal elitists and incels is slowly becoming a circle 🤦

Hey *Megadeth fan coworker*. How do you feel about *band name*?
Fuck *band name*!
Sick. I’ll have to check them out.
For me, another way is to mention Stu Barlow and Hansi Kursch in the same sentence. If you need to know why, Schaffer and Jan 6 2020
In fact I thought I was just not into metal as much as I got older, but discovered that was not the case the first time I listened to Slayer 😂
I can't listen to Nickelback, because they sound like Country to me, and that's one genre that I just can't stand. I WANTED to like Sleep Token, I'm a big fan of Ghost, so someone recommended I check out Sleep Token. I thought they looked really cool when I saw images of them. But their music is just... meh? For me, anyway, I get incredibly bored sitting through a ST song, waiting for the song to "kick in" but it's just like an 8 minute long intro with a couple of brief build ups which sound like they might be getting somewhere but then it dies back into an intro thing again 😕
Slipknot - this is sad, ok, I was about 16 or 17 when they got popular in the nu-metal years, and all my friends were into them, Korn, and Marilyn Manson.
I didn't grow up listening to metal of any kind, and I'd never listened to Slayer or Judas Priest before last year, but hearing them for the first time was like I'd found god or something 😂
Anyway.
You should listen to some of their songs I’d start with the old songs and the new ones afterwards
I think we all know the exact moment Metal Elitists specifically targeted Architects, it was the moment Sam “disowned” the blegh.
I actually saw Poppy open for Avenged Sevenfold back in March and it was surprisingly good set, I’m not really familiar with her music so I wasn’t sure how I’d like it (I’m not an elitist at all because I find them incredibly annoying but like I said I didn’t know what her music would be like) though I was pleasantly surprised by how good she sounded for someone her age (I also didn’t know she was only four years older than me so it was also kinda cool to learn how close in age we are)
I went to HS with Corey from Trivium. Good dude. He deserves all the success he and the band have earned.
The hate towards women in the metal scene still is INSANE, I've seen the reception from some people on Kittie. It's wild.
I listen to the radio, and now and then I say, “ew,” and reach to change the channel. It’s sleep token.
I was completely unaware Trivium, of all the metalcore bands, is an elitist target (outside of metalcore in general being a target)
That being said, in response to that last bit, I don't count myself as a fan of Sleep Token, Not because they're not "heavy enough" or "true metal" though.
I think also when it comes to Sleep Token and Bad Omens, metal elitest also probably hate everything new. Just a theory.
The "Old is Best" ideology is definitely rooted deep within metal elitists.
sleep token and bad omens are pretty much the only newer metal bands that I listen to regularly
also, having a lot of female fans and many influences in their music from pop and rnb makes them "not real metal"
@@RockedNet Example: Metallica fans today still heralding the 80s albums and nooooooothing came after. Nothing. At all. Ever.
If 2:19 Doesn’t make you like the video, then I don’t know what will. ☺️
It really seems like people listen to music for how it makes them look, not how it makes them feel. Being a metal elitist and never growing out of the angry at everything in pain phase is just stunted growth.
I don't know if anyone has said this yet, but almost every core band like Suicide Silence, Spite, Counterparts, Capsize to name a few
Other bands that I've seen plenty of elitists hate on are;

I like their philosophy of "metal that makes you move," even if it doesn't always work for me personally.
@@matthewjoy475 the best thing I can always say about Avatar is they put on one hell of a live show. Never been disappointed
I didnt know we were still concerned about metal elitism. Thought that stuff died with the advent of the times and change of the tides
When Mike did a "Dad Joke Competition" between the band members, every time he'd have the audience react for Scott, one dude behind me would boo and yell things like "fuck Scott!" It was goddamn hilarious to me
Kitty!! Anything that makes metal elitists cry, makes me smile. I love me some Sleep Token, Slipknot, Anthrax, and Trivium.
Don't let 'em know about bands like Psychostick. I don't think their fragile little minds could handle it.
From the heart splits my sides every time I hear it
I think people who hate Anthrax just hate fun.
I saw them with Black Label Society last year, and while not the best concert I've been to, easily one of the most fun.
I also went to that show. I enjoyed it.
I remember when I was a kid I joined a bunch of forums where I had similar tastes to and one was a metal forum and I kept posting about Slipknot because that was the band I was into at the time and people kept complaining and going like “this is what real metal sounds like”. I deleted my account almost immediately lol

Sadly we can add Knocked Loose now, hurts me that ever since their new album (fkn banger album) everyone is hating on them.
I just ignore them because I've noticed they randomly say something like "Green Jell-O/Jelly was really underrated".
not always true I consider myself a metal elitist or a music snob and I like Slipknot, Anthrax, Motionless in White and Sleep Token
Gross dive bars in the Midwest gigs were traumatic. I still remember what the Creepy Crawl bathroom smelled like!
The new battle vest I’m making has about 8 of these bands (between this video and the first one). I can’t wait to piss off gatekeepers.
For some reason, Sleep Token has been difficult for me to get into. However, I am willing to give it another go based on live shows and such. Is it worth another shot?
I say yes, as it was the live show that won me over in 2022, and my wife over in 2023. Once you see Sleep Token live, it clicks.
@@RockedNet much appreciated. 🤘
Absolutely man, you got to discover that itch you want in their discography, then the rest will follow suite. At least that did for me.
People go out of their way to hate or ridicule Sleep Token like it's trendy to do so. Like they are confused/angry people like them 🤣
People hating on Trivium makes no sense. Especially now, when they seem like they've actually found their perfect sound.
I loved Slipknot in middle school. I tried revisiting them a few years ago and couldn’t get into it. Corey Taylor’s singing voice just ruins it for me
If Sleep Token ain't Metal - they are at least Shock Rock
I mean they look like they have attire for it anyway
Another huge band that metal elitists shit on is Spiritbox, mostly due to the pop influences and the folks who miss IWABO.
I also want to point out the amount of hate In Flames gets, mostly from people who have only listened to their 90s output. While I can admit not all of their stuff works for me personally, the amount of vitriol they get even being one of the major forces in the Gothenburg scene is unwarranted.
I saw Poppy live this year and she rocked harder than nearly any of the “real metal “ acts iI’ve seen in the past thirty years.
5:35 - Doro: Hold meine biere.
Poppy's I Disagree surprised me in a good way.
I think that Metal Elitists just don't like change, anything popular, and expansive. So of course they wouldn't like Slipknot or Sleep Token
I've noticed elitists hating on Nightwish and symphonic metal in general. (Don't remember them from your first video)
Also I love Anthrax.
"Everyone knows what they smell like too.'
Yep
I just knew sleep token and bad omens would make the list, was expecting spiritbox too
liked and subbed for the cat purring
Chester appreciates the support.
Had no idea that anyone hated Trivium. Their stuff is amazing
Im a woman who discovered in your first list that I’m a metal elitist. I love Anthrax though. And I like Slipknot. I really love Trivium
