I appreciate Jake giving his overall thoughts on the game right in the beginning of the video, for those of us who don't want to get too in depth and would rather go in relatively blind.
As someone who is hyped for the gsme but was realistic im kinda shocked its at 91 on metacritic rn lol In paticular I like the Polygon review because it's so honest about how their own views left them both sold on and sometimes left them disapo8nted.
I appreciate the fact that Jake is always giving us not only straight up gameplay, but also gives us his first impressions of the latest games releasing
Most people who were super stoked for Starfield to be released were mostly just excited that it meant Bethesda would finally start working on the next Elder Scrolls
It baffles me that the same people that have played every single game from Bethesda still manage to overhype their games. I don't see how they haven't learned how to manage their expectations.
Bethesda pioneered it back in the day so it was easy to overlook things but its sad that they couldnt perfect their formula by now. With that said I definitely didnt expect this to come out as a masterpiece 😂
If you're planning to start playing Starfield after the June update, you're in for a treat. Most of the bugs I encountered during my initial 40 hours of gameplay at launch have been fixed, and there have been many improvements, including new modes and a vehicle system. The main story is great, but the side quests are where the game truly shines. The various faction missions and the side quests you encounter while exploring different planets are fantastic-it's classic Bethesda at its best. I’ve completed over 100 hours in Starfield and still can't wait to get home and unfold the next side quest, which usually take a decent 2-3 hours. Enjoy!
the story is not great, the story missions themselves are even worse. The NPC's are horrible too. They have no personality. the missions are repeated fetch quests that are never any different from each other. Check map for location of the shard, loading screen to the planet, traverse barren planet, enter the same building, do the same mechannic to activate the building and see the same 5 second cutscene. it doesn't even give you any information abotut why the powers work the way they do, any lore about them and nothing else other than "use the power" and that's it. The NPC's are not even different from eachother in personality and behavoiur. No emotion on their face at all. Planet exploration is pointless. the land is barren. No aliens other than some bugs and small dinosour looking herbivours. A couple of pointless recources. 3-4 locations that have no connection to eachother and are the exact same on each planet every single time with the only possible difference being if the enemy faction is one or the other. The caves are the eaxct same with nothing to discover in them. The same for outposts too. The towns that you come across are so barebones that there's no point in even going to them unless you want to get a boring "go here fetch that" quest that's the exact same as the main stories quests. There's no effort put anywhere into this game. The ship building is so boring and clunky too. WHy is it so complicated and tediuos to place no parts onto the ship? Why can I not customize the isnide of the ship? Oh wait maybe it's because you dont even need to be in the ship or spend time there because space travel is legit just loading screen after laoding screen and ship battles are the most horribly designed thing in the game with controls and UI so clunky that it could give RedFall a runf or its money. The only time I enjoyed myself was the one faction side mission where I had to infilitrate that 1 priate group. I spent 66$ on this man because of my friends hype and reviews that deceived me. i should have learnt from Fallout 4 that Bethesda don't know what theyr'e doing and that todd Howard doesn't care
@@chainsaw8507 man can't even reduce reuse and recycle no more. Let me save the environment in peace..... It was just twice bro stop acting like I pasted it 20 times. You have criticism here fym "haters"
Thats a good point. I wonder if there is a way for mods to just focus on one planet, so you can download a whole mission set with aesetic mods that only affect one planet.
@@radagast7200It actually would be possible, what would suck is if modders choose the same planet to make their creation so we’d have to choose which one to pick lol
I knew the exploration was going to be a hang up the minute they said you couldn't just land on a planet or launch directly into space without a loading screen. That was one of the BIGGEST selling points of No Man's Sky. Missing that is a big deal. Also, that bug you showed where one character basically rushed the screen mid conversation and then the camera panned to see the other character all up in your face... was terrifying LOL. It became a horror game for a quick sec.
@@LuxLoser well this game was purported by many gamers as a “No Man’s Sky killer”, even many NMS players thought the same. It’s mechanics draw more than obvious comparisons, all the way back from the first gameplay footage they released. It clearly draws inspiration from it. I’d call it a blend of NMS and Mass Effect with a Bethesda twist.
That’s what I love about Elite Dangerous. There are essentially no loading screens and the entire Milky Way galaxy to explore. You jump from system to system, pull up the full spectrum scanner and track the signals each celestial body puts out, then you fly around the star and fly all the way to that glorious 2 biological rocky/icy planet, shoot out your surface scanning probes, locate the fungoida, fly down through the atmosphere and pick your landing spot while hovering over the surface, gently set down your ship and hop into the rover, drive to the mushroom, and get out to scan it. But once you get there, it’s so boring, you scan the mushrooms and leave, only flora, no fauna. No fights, hardly any space pirates outside the bubble. Which makes sense; no one’s hauling cargo out there. But that’s buy and large the best way to make money. I was hoping starfield was going to be a story version of Elite in a sense. Because Elite is a space-sim not a story. It’s just fallout but in space. God damn Bethesda.
Remember how interesting and exciting every location was in Mass Effect 2? In any sci-if universe, space is mostly empty and boring. That’s why devs should focus on density and showing us what’s good. Not just showing us a lot.
Tiered of the Mass Effect 2 people. That game was literally OK at best. The characters, combat and story felt AVERAGE at best. Nothing Special... You must have been a preteen when you played it?
Everyone wants to use the point of “they wanted to go realistic” when nobody wants to play starfield or any Bethesda game for realism. That’s just silly
Assassins Creed went that route too. Valhalla was a good game, but the open aspect of it just was "meh". Traveling the world was dull and not interesting. I'd prefer less open world and more linear and do a really good job with that more directional focus.

played a few hours and disappointed so far in the immersion/storytelling aspect. spoilers for the first couple missions: i picked the dream house and kid stuff traits and imagined my character as picking up this dangerous mining gig to be able to support their family and finance their house. then 20 minutes in my boss is telling me i dont have a job anymore and my only option is to be like yeah okay! bro i got a mortgage to pay i dont care about getting to the bottom of some weird acid trip i had cause i touched a rock. i wish the stakes were higher so i could at least feel like continuing with the main story is something that my character would do. just thought it was weird that they offered these cool traits to shape your character and then immediately put your character in a situation where you have to roleplay against that shaping. eventually got to the museum and got a run-down of the worldbuilding and i realize it probably feels shallow because i got it told to me through a series of images and voiceovers instead of experiencing it myself, but the game does kind of encourage you to interact with the museum and learn the story through that first as opposed to learning naturally. also - i haven't met all the companions yet or interacted enough to form a full opinion but so far they feel pretty bland. especially in forms of physical design. i mean, sarah's arguably the main companion and she looks like any other npc in the city. edit: played some more and some of the dialogue is really unnatural. one of the first sarah dialogue options is asking her if she believes in any of the religions. it would make sense if it was tied to you having one of the religion traits or a location or even if you were just asking her about constellations creed - but youre literally just like hi i met you 5 minutes ago do you believe in divine atheism or snake god? :D probably seems like a silly thing to ruin my experience but a good story and being able to immerse myself in the world and the roleplay of my character is my main priority in single-player games. that being said, the combat has been fun so far and the world environments are beautiful so im not giving up yet in finding the enjoyment in the game, but it's definitely gotten bumped to the backlog.
I’m not too far in yet but my biggest problem with it has definitely been the space traversal. In No Man’s Sky you could fly right up to a planet and pick literally anywhere you wanted to land. Here you select it with a menu and pick from maybe 3 or 4 spots you can fast travel to :/
You can click on the planet and land on random spots. You click anywhere on land and it makes a spot for you to fast travel to. I hate all the fast travel.
@@gameranxTVyou're such a happy dude love how you can even have fun in shitty games. A positive attitude is infectious and makes your viewers happy too
Yes!! I might find some takes a little shallow but that's not what they're here for.. These are the guys that cover everything and give us the low-down. This was a great review
The ship building as mentioned was one of the better features for me too. I went from pretty much using generic starter ships and one I stole that I upgraded slightly, I jumped from that to investing 4 points into piloting and 4 more points into ship building and transitioned from a beginner ship to one that has over 20,000kg cargo space and still great speed, defense and weapons lol. I made an absolute behemoth. It did however cost me 690,000 and that's basically why I went from basic to best immediately, as I figured if I just keep upgrading incrementally it would cost a lot more overall and probably closer to a million if I did it step by step, and well... I haven't earned a million credits yet, I spent every credit I had on the ship lol.
Honestly, just a simple first person grav jump animation where it looks like you're traveling through a worm hole to mask the loading when you're travelling through planet instead of whatever they did would make the game much much more immersive.
@@obi-wankenobi5411 you're not wrong, but this is just a minor QOL. I'd rather they actually do a better planet exploration system than ever implementing this themselves.
I never felt that strongly about it until now. I was looking at Starfield reviews, and none of them seemed to really tell me what I wanted to know, but as soon as I saw the Gameranx thumbnail, I knew I'd actually get a good idea of what the game is like.
If you like sci-fi and Fallout/Skyrim you’ll love this game. The intro is pretty bland, but just do a few story missions, then go explore. Iv been enjoying it since early release. Unless you’re expectations were unrealistic, I think most Bethesda fans will enjoy this a lot. A few points: - shooting is like improved Fallout 4. Felt good to me - Surprisingly the 3rd person looks/moves great. - The main quest is MY favorite from Bethesda this far - You can land on planets even if there isn’t a marker there. You can also dock onto other ships and space stations (thought that was cool) - plenty clothes and suit options. You can looks like a bounty hunter to looking like a alien stripper. - you have to unlock mechanics like stealth bar, pickpocketing, combat slide, etc - planets tend to look mostly barren but you never know with Bethesda
no. I loved most bethesda games since morrowind. even ones like fallout 4 and fallout 76 i still could have fun with. this one was a chore. i did the quests up to mars including all side quests along the way. took my time explored 10 planets between. the storyline is boring. the exploration is horrible everything is the same or similiar copy pasted elements. buildings only have a few types and you run into ones that are exact copies of some previous ones. alot of threads on steam detailed how other players felt and many seemed to feel the same during the early access period. many of us refunded mine was at 20 hours. before the game completely released and we no longer could. so no if you like fallout skyrim sci fi that does not mean you will love this game.
Always love your "before you buy" videos because you guys actually go in depth and let the viewers know what your personal opinions about the game. This is why I always check your reviews out compared to others. Keep up the amazing job!
I really do love your ‘before you buy’ videos, it’s my go to for honest reviews. I’ve been hyped for Starfield but had concerns, this has me excited still but it’s tempered my expectations. I’ll be playing on PC at launch 🙌

It is biased and that's fine, he says at 0:38 "personal opinion I like it". A game review doesn't have to be completely unbiased, I like hearing people's opinions on it.
I always check the reviews from those who make that sacrifice of buying the game and taking the time to explore it and go through many aspects of the game and show visuals and explaining the games mechanics and NPC's etc.... This takes time I know and gameranx your team is very important and needed and we thank you guys for going above and beyond to make this video and content for "Before You Buy". That's why I never get into the hype of any game that is being hyped up before its release date and or buying the vault edition or the day 1 or preserving game. Another thing I just don't seem to understand and that is why would anyone need to reserve a game when these games are almost 100% digital?
It’s because they get your money early and for some reason people feel like preordering is some ego / culture thing. I really don’t get it. Most people agree preordering is useless in todays time yet stats show more and more do it every year despite the benefits becoming more and more lackluster. No one’s really sure. Most of the defense for pre orders are just “because I wanted to”. I know this isn’t an answer but I’ve seen a lot of discussions about preordering and it’s usually always the same people saying they’ll never do it and then boom, half of them end up preordering. That and most people who preorder games also aren’t terminally online or discussing with other gamers. They see a game online, or in an ad, and then they preorder and wait the countdown.
@@Pipes7472 yea thats the mental institution that is going on! They forgot you barely get a game that is tangible anymore everything is full digital and they have forgotten that due to the fact that technology has caused soooo many to be blind not use better judgment.

I only buy physical copies of games, so if someone is like me, and also wants to guarantee to play the game day 1, pre orders are needed for more popular games.
@@ItsMaddenBarss only if its possible to obtain that tangible copy and now days everything is going digital so good luck with that and that kills off pre-ordering
I actually like how Bethesda tackled overencumbered here. Instead of locking your move speed to walking only they still gave you the option to sprint in exchange for a faster O2 decrease rate. Which, makes sense imho. since carrying a lot of stuff tire you out faster when exerting more effort
There’s a perk in fallout for that basically did the Same thing made it so you used ap to walk when you were overencombered I always liked it thought it was smart
I mean carry 40 guns (for example) would over-encumber you. At a certain weight you ain't moving. Makes more sense to me. Game play wise it feels the new system is a better system.
I guess some people were expecting a real single instance universe where you can just walk/fly anywhere without pauses or loading screens. Instead you got a new Fallout where every building is its own instance and you get a loading screen in the elevator.
I think one thing I love is that with skyrim for example, it is a buggy mess with or without mods but most of the time it is fun still because the bugs are usually hilarious and entertaining. A lot of modern open world games fail that though and the bugs are frustrating instead. I just hope that the bugs here stay on skyrim level and not cyberpunk 2077 day one level.

Can't wait to see how compact people make their ships. I love seeing how minimal people can get while still being resourceful and having all the good modules.
I want to make my own take on either the YT 2000 from Star Wars or the Raptor from Battlestar Galactica since that ship bundles a few different roles into around 30-something meters long lmao
Only got about seven hours or so into the game so far with early access, but I have to say it is absolutely a Bethesda game. If you like Skyrim, and like fall out, it plays like them, it has its quirks just like those games but it is a lot of fun.
does the game also have somthing like in fallout that you learn the storry of a company ore a vault just by hacking in computers just to get some background from that place
I never have huge expectations anymore. That was definitely shattered with Cyberpunk. I was excited for this one with a healthy bit on skepticism and knowing Bethesda, this seems all par for the course with flaws and all. Appreciate the critical eye. I'll be playing Sea of Stars until early access later today. Great video.
This game seems to be in worst state than Cyberpunk was on release... I wonder if people will react as strongly. I'm not buying this full price for sure, looks like ps3 game in many places.

Thanks for the review Jake! I'll definitely pick it up at some point. Hopefully it gets patched, and they keep improving it! It's a bummer that so many games are having huge worlds that are all too often empty outside the main hubs. Smaller, more full worlds are much better.
So it's exactly what I'd thought it would be and wanted it to be. Another BGS game along the lines of Fallout and Skyrim. I feel like that's what everyone who's been following this game since its announcement all those years ago expected. Basically Skyrim in space. I wasn't expecting anything that reinvented the wheel here. I just wanted something with those similar vibes but with a fresh spin on it. Seems like it delivers perfectly on that.
he said that's what it was but the open expanse of it hinders the feel of the old games. they attempted to make too many planets instead of providing solid, dense content
Glad i kept my expectations in check with this one. I didn't expect Starfield to be the next game changing space sim, but a classic Bethesda RPG with all the pro's and con's that come along with that, except this time it's a space setting, wich seems to be exactly what we're getting. I've heard the first 4 hours or so can be a bit boring, than it really opens up. Every Bethesda game starts off slow. I think if u can find a series X for 350 bucks like I did, It's worth it to play Starfield.
I've never been a huge fan of procedurally generated game worlds, and this does nothing to convince me that they're a good thing. I wish they would have just worked on a small handful of planets in different systems instead of having hundreds, or "a thousand" planets that are for the most part all procedurally generated. It just leads to so many copy and paste situations which is super immersion breaking if you're having to run through the exact same "abandoned laboratory" on different planets. I think the modding community is going to be doing a LOT of work on this one.
I'm 100% with you there. Procedurally generated is often just a codeword for mindless content driven by an algorithm. I'll take quality over soulless quantity any day.
@@veximmortalis8622I will say one thing. Which is; if humanity were to terraform and/or construct things on different planets modularity and standardization would be pretty common. Need to build a lab but wanna save time? Go to the prefab place and buy their pre-designed lab!
Something the size of our own solar system would've been PLENTY. 3-5 earth-ish sized planets of different types. We literally have a fire planet, gas planet, ocean planet and desert planet lol. Bunch of moons flying around gas giants of different "biomes" to explore, big asteroid belt to mess around with and a couple end-game planets way out. The fringe is probably the weakest from our own solar system but someone who thought up Tamriel could probably handle it creatively.

@@MakamaFEETbaldurs gate 3 doesn't have Bethesda money let's not compare even with their early access. Not to mention Bethesda would rather charge full price for an early access title and sell it as release ready product. Not specifically starfield, but other games at least
I think I put 30 hours into this game before I gave up. The main quest was way more "tell, don't show" with all of its information. I felt like a dog being led around on a leash while all of the NPCs decided what I would be doing next. For exploration, I didn't care about the loading screens, but once I actually got to the system/planet, it was just open space with very little to do. Most planets have outposts that feel like dungeons. You stumble across an old mining outpost, shoot your way through, and get a bit of loot. Lastly, the loot gets overwhelming. My ship was constantly at capacity and so was my character. I know I'm a loot goblin, but this is rough. 4/10 for me. RPG mechanics are okay, quests are bland, exploration is boring. The combat is great though.
Just watching the gameplay gives me nostalgia. Just walking through a city, the NPCs staring at you, the loading screen and random door noise as you're entering a dungeon, It just feels like home. Can't believe it's been so long since we had a Bethesda single player game.

That's exactly what I will do. Still playing Baldur's Gate 3, so might start a day or 2 later, or not, depending if I finish my first playthrough after alpha play testing it. Still so deep into the game, that I can't decide if I will jump on day one pass release or wait for the first patch. The one thing for sure I can confirm, as long as the game is in playable state, it's on my 'playing next' list after BG3.
@DonSaly you...are going to be greatly disappointed after playing BG3. It will be like going from the El Toro Rollercoaster at Six flags to riding the "tea cup" with your kids.
As a person who isn't very into si-fi I feel like the issues listed may actually pull me right out. With BG3 which I was super excited for (for a multitude of reasons more connected to a world I love and hoping to see that lore brought to life than anything) that I haven't managed to finish with my constant overtime at work yeah, I think I'll be sticking to BG3 especially with the coming PS release.
@joeneal21 Baldur's Gate 3. It has its fair share of glitches still, though the patches are still coming for those, and as a big fantasy fan, it's harder to pull me out of a fantasy setting. Even when the game glitches in ridiculous ways like the panther that was distorted in one of my cinamatics and was doing interesting things like trying to be bipedal and talking (it was Halsan, for some reason his wildshape didn't dismiss and I'd been sneaking around so panther was ideal)
At this point i never expect any game to be bug free :D I'm looking forward to this one too, and have hopes and expectation for mid-good, and a good game is the best ingredient for modders to make it into a great game ^^
my expectations were never super high to begin with. when the game was first announced i thought it was just gonna be another bethesda game that takes place in space and i was fine with that. i didn’t even expect to fly ships. i thought traversal from planet to planet was just gonna be a whole bunch of losing screens and i still was hyped. so after hearing all this i’m now super excited to play later today.

i kinda have the idea that many adult gamers have already experienced so much that it takes more and more everytime to from the developers to amaze us, and surprise with something new. At some point that becomes an impossible task. But there is always a young generation that is going to pick up an open world game like this for the first time. If i was myself 15 years ago and played this game i would probably experience it as the best thing ever.
All that us adult gamers want is an immersive interesting world with cool stories to interact with. The second I heard there were going to be lots of randomly generated planets I knew this game would be a let down and yeah it looks boring. I'm not intrested in doing 100 hours of randomly generated dungeons. I'd rather play vampire survivors if were just doing randomly generated combat.
Pretty true because where one developers exceeds the rest need to catch up .. a lot of these games fall short , they miss things that other games got right
It's not that. Games have just not processed as they could have. I mean we had Dead Space in 2012 for example and nothing has come close to it in that genre, except for the remake ironically. Yhese developers just aren't trying anymore because they know they don't have to try hard to get people to buy crappy games. It's just sad really. PS2 days were rhe best in gaming history. Oh and Rockstar can we get GTA6 already?!?! GTA5 been out for a DECADE already!!
It’s fascinating seeing the variety of cope on here. Modders will finish the game, DLC and patches are going to sort the game out, if you were a kid you’d like it. When you were a kid, you were entertained by a plastic toy truck or a funny shaped stick. I mean come on dude, you can’t be this much of a drone

This was pretty helpful. I usually go out and explore ignoring a lot of the main story and quests, but I think I will focus more on letting the game guide my exploration through the narrative because that is where the best curated content will be. So, I think you just helped me have a better experience than I may have otherwise.
At least he’s honest. It took so long to make. This game is a great example that helps improve how fast games are made. It’d be cool to see more investments in games that actually take 10 years to make. My lord can the budget be hefty but if the gaming industry wants more realistic, yet inherent interactions within a game it would certainly be worth it. I wish they allowed more opportunities to make things from scratch. Especially with structures. It would be neat to be able to have the ability to customize really small details such as how something is wrapped, where you actually work with the elements of crafting items. Along with having actual opportunities to barter more precisely rather than just collecting mere elements with basic opportunities to sell. Yet in respects to the culture this game comes from its quite magnificent- its really neat how they further integrated previous objective and interface styles within this game- as it allows people who are familiar with Skyrim and Fallout the ability to easily adapt. It’s such a large and prestigious game- which further gives less rights to assume such menial tasks should be incorporated as it could easily cause issues for economic development if not studied through the prospects of sociological development.
Seems like the type of game you’ll love if you’re a fan of giant, expansive adventuring, but it might not click fully if you prefer more depth or focus. Makes sense.

With a ton of loading screens and game play clunk. Its a pre avg Bethesda release. The mods might make everything you could want though.
Picked it up on game pass so far really enjoying myself with it, love the stuff on the ground and the random gun fights in the ships only real complaint is the traversing space, the menu feels awkward to handle, hopefully they do a update to that part
I legit got it off of gamepass to but I ended up buying it because I really don't want to keep gamepass and its going to take me a couple months to beat sense I have a full time job
This is one of the only channels i will watch for game news. You guys are great at spoiler free yet detailed reviews. Amazing work. I cant wait to play this game when it comes out on the 5th.
I'm very glad to hear the protagonist won't be voiced this time, as that seemed to be the main reason conversation responses were so limited in Fallout 4. This looks a bit more open from a roleplaying perspective, which is always my favorite aspect of games like this--coming up with a new character idea and running them through the story to see how handling things differently turns out each time.
The problem wasn't that it had a voice actor.. Its that your character was already given a disposition, backstory, and motivation. That completely eliminates the immersion of an RPG.
It just sucks that the landscape of gaming is now you got to expect the game is going to run like s*** or not work properly on day one. Don't buy it. Just going to encourage them to make another piece of s*** not going to be complete for 2 years after launch....
I loved fallout 4 for what it was, but I didn't like alot about it as a fallout game. The voiced protagonist was jarring for me.. if it wasn't fallout, just a new Bethesda IP it would have been okay. The retcon to a ton of the lore is what made me annoyed to be honest.
@notme9976 damn shame. Most of my faith in Bethesda is lost due to Fallout 76 and how many times they re-released Skyrim. It kinda makes me feel like they try to make the most money with minimal effort. Their games have definitely been falling off as of late.

Big thanks as always for the informative video. Planet exploration aside, it seems to be exactly what i wanted from the game. Can't wait to play it on game pass tomorrow. ❤
That was my FIRST thought at the trailer "why does everything look so gray?" and boy was I right. Strangely, the colors are SO toned down, it's bizarre why they'd do that, but that seems pretty par for the course for a Bethesda game.
With my few hours in the game idk how I feel. Coming out of buldars gate I feel the missing elements and man all the bugs and audio glitches are everywhere. I am with you on the game being bad in the beginning, if you bare through it the game rewards you with something later on
I might be one of the rare ones but this game for me was never about exploring the generated planets, i always thought it would be a boring experience. I was always about explore the main story and side quests.
@@yc_030same, the second I heard there were that many planets it killed my hype. We already have no man’s sky, I wanted a Bethesda experience with hand crafted worlds
No man's sky creators are probably laughing at Bethesda.... From what I've seen on reviews and game play. I'll give it a go because it's free on game pass...
Its basically Fallout/Skyrim in space with half slashed off from the gameplay/story because they focused on outpost building and ship building. A major mistake that is going to cost them dearly.
@@Bone74838 after 2 days I can say it doesn't play like fallout or Skyrim... lot of dialogue and choices.. and constant fast travel.. with a bit off shooting inbetween. I'm invested into the story though.. want to continue to finish the story so I guess it good in that perspective... immersed me like most Bethesda games just differently this time
I like the whole challenge perk system, it makes it so it's something you really have to think and work towards, not just get a point and put it wherever... also it'll last longer for late playthroughs. Although i think it could be annoying when doing replay's etc...
I'm a big fan of this, imo it's one of the only logical ways to avoid the overly "grind-y" feeling of upgrading, like in Horizon. In those you literally have to beat the toughest enemy to then get a mod that allows you to... Beat the toughest enemy? Again? Always wanted there to be unique challenges associated to it, so sounds like this'll scratch that itch for me.
@@naveepenniman8649 Great, that's what was missing from previous games, It's a pain in the ass trying to get all the perks at full within the first missions of Skyrim and Fallout, you have to rely on glitches and the command screen where you can use God Mode or stuff like that. Best way in any game is to have all the experience and habilities done so you can feel real powerfull from start to finish.
This is basically what I wanted the outer worlds to be, even though I still loved playing the outer worlds it was very short and the maps weren't the biggest. So, I'm excited to play mainly for the story, base building and combat. I think the guns in fallout 76 are some of the most fun guns to use in a game so I'm excited to test all the starfield guns.
Have you played No mans sky? It’s very rarely ever talked about but it’s an absolutely fantastic space game that I’ve spent countless hours in building my space base, my ship, there’s a storyline but it’s completely optional, I’ve never done the storyline and I have so many resources of anything, you can do missions with other players too, there’s space hubs you can fly to where all the players go to, you can fly up to a planet and land on it without loading screens. It’s a hidden gem!
It’s funny that he mentioned doing a lot of clicking. That was the first thing that stood out. No Man’s Sky was fun because it lacked loading screens. NMS just didn’t hold my attention because of the procedurally generated dull planets. Starfields planets look pretty dull so far. I’d rather visit less but more detailed planets then infinite boring ones.
Still very early in to Starfield, but I'm already noticing an unnecessarily large scale to things that attempt to make areas feel grand, but end up doing the opposite because it's still only sparsely populated with generic "citizens."
I love the goofy NMS planets, but I play it pretty casually and am still finding everything very visually interesting. I'm already bored with the Starfield planets after watching a couple of reviews and seeing maybe30 minutes of play. Meh. I do agree with you that I'd rather have a few bespoke planets (even if they only have one biome) rather than thousands of realistic but boring ones.
Really appreciate your honest thoughts and review here man. I know it’s not always easy to go against the grain and be 100% honest. This game has a lot of hype and a rabid fan base. Thanks for keeping it real.
Yup, very rabid and toxic. For the longest time, they were abusing everyone, from PS fans, Sony fans, JRPG fans, gacha fans, Zelda fans, etc. Gamespot and IGn finally settled the score and gave the score it truly deserves. IMHO watching Alanah's video, I think it deserves a 5. Running around on a lifeless, empty, monotonous grey for 10 minutes aimlessly is no fun.
@@Eyefornow Well, if you've taken abuse from those p**** for the longest time, wouldn't you want to give it back. I don't know by maybe reminding them gacha hell Honkai Star Rail got a 9, while their great game got a 7 lmao
I assumed it would be a Bethesda game through and through. I’m fully prepared to immerse myself in this game. Given all its shortcomings, I’m still hyped as hell. I love Bethesda games. Great video.
How are the RP elements? Are we closer to FNV or Fallout 4? Do we have branching quest paths or different kinds of quests that complement the RP of your character? Is there good build variety?
I had always assumed this would carry a lot of gameplay loops from the Elder Scrolls and Fallourt series. Would have the same jank and glitches etc. But then I have 100s of hours in each of their other games so that is my bag. Even FO76 today is a good experience solo, they have added enough from that disaster launch to bring it around such that it is fun spending time in that game world. Looking forward to this one
I think what's going to grab a lot of No Man's Sky's players is the ship customization in Starfield. We've been asking for that since I can remember. Even in a very primitive form, it's a big part of what made me love Starflight back in the day...anyone remember that classic? 🙂
Agree. Could you imagine a world where Bethesda and Hello games come together to create the ultimate space exploration game 🤤🤤🤤 NMS has really nailed the warp drive/planet to planet aspect of what makes a great open world/universe experience. I am slightly gutted that Bethesda haven't been able to pull that off, but on the other hand, graphically this looks super impressive.
As a NMS player this game lacks everything I love about Space games. Ship customization is great but no bloody point in it if I can't fly it around a planet and leave the atmosphere in it. I was hoping it would be at least that but this isn't the system seller that it hoped It might be so I had a reason to have a xbox with my Ps5. This ain't it.
@@FurBurger151 I'm a big NMS guy - since about 2017. I love the game, and I see your point about Starfield. In my mind, even though it is IS Bethesda, I'm going to give it the same consideration for improvement that I gave NMS for sure.

Really hope they add the option to do ‘space-walking’ outside your ship to make it feel more like you’re actually in space! Not instead feel like you’re just sitting in a rotating gun turret
yeah, I really wish you could get up and walk around the ship at least when you're in space instead of staying behind the wheel, fakely navigating to planets.
Yeah you can just tell where their attention was actually at when making this game it's like do they really know how a true gamers brain works or is that just for PR sake pretending they do also this review is basically like some guy telling you how his day went avgn lol
Kind of upsetting that exploration doesn't look as fun as it was made out to be, but at least you touched on a point that I was hoping for, Daggrefall-like dungeon crawling delight, perhaps not as elaborate, but still. Also I had wondered if there were derelict ships in space to salvage or something, not a huge deal but I was hoping. I LOVED the idea of hitting some checkmarks before you can level up a skill, that's smart and I think helps focus skill building instead of endlessly jumping to max out a skill, you know? It also seems like the exploration is only fun when you do side quests or job boards which, maybe that'll be fun? Still going to pick this one up for ship building alone.
Did you see how long it took to load into that first building? Can't imagine how much time you spend in loading screen during all the fast traveling to planets. Yikes
Bethesda games are fascinating in that they are greater than the sum of their parts. These deeply imperfect games just somehow manage to transcend the usual gaming experience and leave us thinking about them for years to come. Great review. Excited to jump in!
I think the way Jake explained being wrapped in a warm Bethesda blanket makes so much sense. Their games are such a particular vibe, nothing complex, a lot of cool exploration, and side quests and factions that are highly memorable. And while it shouldn’t be considered a feature on Bethesda’s part, the modding community elevates these games to a new level
@@zacharypickering-rust1889no we don't All Bethesda games are overrated I'm ashamed of how much I've played Skyrim which is their worst game by far yet was heralded as the greatest game every even though it was nothing without mods
I think part of it is the jank, all the minor bugs and glitches that make people just stop and watch, as well as a usually rather compelling world, with mysteries and lore that people are interested in. Usually grand environments as well, but the procedurally generated might hamper that one a bit. And of course, we can't forget about the mods, the modding community take the games to new heights, some just making minor tweaks and adjustments, and some overhauling the entire game, honestly can't imagine what a total conversion mod would look like for this game.
I’m currently playing through game pass. Personally, I’m seriously enjoying this game. I wil say I agree with a lot of the points in this video. I expected it to handle like a typical Bethesda game but I can honestly say I’m really happy with it all so far. I’ve been wanting a space based fallout-esque game for some time and this game, with all of its flaws, is scratching that itch
From your review. It was what I was expecting. Not some Star Citizen level space sim. It's Bethesda RPG in Space. And I will love it. As always. You cover the good, bad and ugly. thanks.
That pretty much sums it up. All these people expecting hyper-immersive space combat and disappointed that there are cutscenes instead of seamless transitions when taking off and landing should have paid more attention; Bethesda has been super clear the entire time about what we were getting, and so far I haven't seen anything that didn't match up.
I'm playing on RTX 4080, ultra quality, no changes needed to run smooth. Granted I am a cheapskate on monitors, so I am only using 1080p 60hz displays. But I get my 60FPS in game, and I am satisfied. I can't remember the last time I fell this much in love with a video game
Btw this took them “7 years of development” 7 years so lets just say they tested their game on a 2080 or a 3070 and found out it ran like this. This game was not developed in 7 years it would legit run things like a 980 or a 1070 without problem funny thing is even the recommended cards arent close to a high end 6 year old GPU. Again expectations were low to begin with.
As I've been a fan of these types of games I'll be playing it, and genuinely interested in what the modding community will come up for it. The base game is usually fun enough, but the real chunk of the content ends up being all the things modders come up with over time too when it comes to Bethesda games of this nature.

@@danieldevito6380 I agree. Let me make it clear before I get shit on in the comments. I love what mods and the modding community does. I know it’s a lot of work and some of my best memories growing up were from modding games like Skyrim that just enhanced my experience. Again, modders are great and they have my upmost respect. I’m just tired with relying on them to fix what the base game should have launched with. Examples are glitches and bugs. It’s ridiculous that a MULTI BILLION DOLLAR COMPANY can’t do that and modders that are usually one person or a small team of people do better work.

I knew the exploration was going to be a hang up the minute they said you couldn't just land on a planet or launch directly into space without a loading screen. Also, that bug you showed where one character basically rushed the screen mid conversation and then the camera panned to see the other character all up in your face... was terrifying LOL. It became a horror game for a quick sec.
Why should the selling point of No Man's Sky matter to this game?
@@LuxLoser well this game was purported by many gamers as a “No Man’s Sky killer”, even many NMS players thought the same.
That problem started with alien isolation i Mind you
Tiered of the Mass Effect 2 people.
BTW New Vegas was a perfect RPG in case you need an example of perfect all around...
Assassins Creed went that route too. Valhalla was a good game, but the open aspect of it just was "meh". Traveling the world was dull and not interesting. I'd prefer less open world and more linear and do a really good job with that more directional focus.

played a few hours and disappointed so far in the immersion/storytelling aspect.
spoilers for the first couple missions:
i picked the dream house and kid stuff traits and imagined my character as picking up this dangerous mining gig to be able to support their family and finance their house. then 20 minutes in my boss is telling me i dont have a job anymore and my only option is to be like yeah okay! bro i got a mortgage to pay i dont care about getting to the bottom of some weird acid trip i had cause i touched a rock. i wish the stakes were higher so i could at least feel like continuing with the main story is something that my character would do. just thought it was weird that they offered these cool traits to shape your character and then immediately put your character in a situation where you have to roleplay against that shaping.
eventually got to the museum and got a run-down of the worldbuilding and i realize it probably feels shallow because i got it told to me through a series of images and voiceovers instead of experiencing it myself, but the game does kind of encourage you to interact with the museum and learn the story through that first as opposed to learning naturally.
also - i haven't met all the companions yet or interacted enough to form a full opinion but so far they feel pretty bland. especially in forms of physical design. i mean, sarah's arguably the main companion and she looks like any other npc in the city. edit: played some more and some of the dialogue is really unnatural. one of the first sarah dialogue options is asking her if she believes in any of the religions. it would make sense if it was tied to you having one of the religion traits or a location or even if you were just asking her about constellations creed - but youre literally just like hi i met you 5 minutes ago do you believe in divine atheism or snake god? :D
probably seems like a silly thing to ruin my experience but a good story and being able to immerse myself in the world and the roleplay of my character is my main priority in single-player games.
that being said, the combat has been fun so far and the world environments are beautiful so im not giving up yet in finding the enjoyment in the game, but it's definitely gotten bumped to the backlog.

You can click on the planet and land on random spots. You click anywhere on land and it makes a spot for you to fast travel to.

I haven't earned a million credits yet, I spent every credit I had on the ship lol.
shame that apart from storage ship means nothing unless you want to try find dog fights. space itself means nothing just use your map to travel
Honestly, just a simple first person grav jump animation where it looks like you're traveling through a worm hole to mask the loading when you're travelling through planet instead of whatever they did would make the game much much more immersive.
Fortunately, give or take 2 weeks a mod will probably do that lol

I never felt that strongly about it until now. I was looking at Starfield reviews, and none of them seemed to really tell me what I wanted to know, but as soon as I saw the Gameranx thumbnail, I knew I'd actually get a good idea of what the game is like.

thank you gameranx as usual. The only place I trust now for an honest review from a company who understand their viewers.
A few points:
- shooting is like improved Fallout 4. Felt good to me
- Surprisingly the 3rd person looks/moves great.
- The main quest is MY favorite from Bethesda this far
- You can land on planets even if there isn’t a marker there. You can also dock onto other ships and space stations (thought that was cool)
- plenty clothes and suit options. You can looks like a bounty hunter to looking like a alien stripper.
- you have to unlock mechanics like stealth bar, pickpocketing, combat slide, etc
- planets tend to look mostly barren but you never know with Bethesda
thanks

Because there are no standards left in gaming communities anymore. The majority are just a bunch of spoiled low standards jimmies who preorder everything just because like the guy above said boost their fragile "ego"and make them feel somehow relevant at something. People have lost their minds bro.
But it comes fast and the inventory system sucks so hard, looting isn't that fun in this imo.
I mean carry 40 guns (for example) would over-encumber you. At a certain weight you ain't moving. Makes more sense to me. Game play wise it feels the new system is a better system.
Fires of rubicon >
Even though it is better, I’m still waiting for a mod to let me carry as much as I want.
I guess some people were expecting a real single instance universe where you can just walk/fly anywhere without pauses or loading screens. Instead you got a new Fallout where every building is its own instance and you get a loading screen in the elevator.
that sounds horrible :(
I don't understand how anyone thought it wasn't going to be Fallout in space with randomly generated dungeons (which is cool imo)
are you using a high rated m2 ssd like they said would be needed?

My bad I was meaning to make a comment on the video not a reply to this comment
I loved fallout 4 for what it was, but I didn't like alot about it as a fallout game.
The voiced protagonist was jarring for me.. if it wasn't fallout, just a new Bethesda IP it would have been okay.
The retcon to a ton of the lore is what made me annoyed to be honest.
@notme9976 damn shame. Most of my faith in Bethesda is lost due to Fallout 76 and how many times they re-released Skyrim. It kinda makes me feel like they try to make the most money with minimal effort. Their games have definitely been falling off as of late.
This is by far the straightest and most honest take on this game that I've seen so far!

That was my FIRST thought at the trailer "why does everything look so gray?" and boy was I right. Strangely, the colors are SO toned down, it's bizarre why they'd do that, but that seems pretty par for the course for a Bethesda game.

@@naveepenniman8649something Farcry 5 already has
I'm a big fan of this, imo it's one of the only logical ways to avoid the overly "grind-y" feeling of upgrading, like in Horizon.

The idea of endlessly generating planets with endlessly generating skyrim draugr caves is not appealing at all to me lol.
Meh. I think what's going to grab a lot of No Man's Sky's players is the ship customization in Starfield. We've been asking for that since I can remember. Even in a very primitive form, it's a big part of what made me love Starflight back in the day...anyone remember that classic? 🙂
Agree.
Could you imagine a world where Bethesda and Hello games come together to create the ultimate space exploration game 🤤🤤🤤
NMS has really nailed the warp drive/planet to planet aspect of what makes a great open world/universe experience.

Bethesda games are fascinating in that they are greater than the sum of their parts. These deeply imperfect games just somehow manage to transcend the usual gaming experience and leave us thinking about them for years to come. Great review. Excited to jump in!
I think the way Jake explained being wrapped in a warm Bethesda blanket makes so much sense. Their games are such a particular vibe, nothing complex, a lot of cool exploration, and side quests and factions that are highly memorable. And while it shouldn’t be considered a feature on Bethesda’s part, the modding community elevates these games to a new level

All Bethesda games are overrated
I'm ashamed of how much I've played Skyrim which is their worst game by far yet was heralded as the greatest game every even though it was nothing without mods
I’m excited for it two years from now, when the modders fix it and make it the game we wanted.
I absolutely love the design of the ship you came up with, it gives me some ideas for my own when I get my copy
