One of the best, complete, informational reviews out there. Bought my 2019 QX80 six months ago with 60,000 miles on it (has 70,000 now) drove it 3,000 miles recently to visit the kids in another state and I must say that long-distance travel in the QX is the best, most relaxed trip I ever took. The 5.6 engine reacts like a rocket when passing (must be careful because you might get it up to 100+ MPH without noticing [because it feels like 70 MPH]), the ride is super quiet, relaxed and, in spite of the outdated media and atrocious gas mileage, I love my QX80. Best to all.
Hey Alex, the center console is removable, a pain in the ass to do, but it is removable. In fact, the tools needed to remove it is located with the tools to change out the spare tire. I believe it's a T40 bit and 10mm or 12mm socket or wrench (Nissan provides an T40 Allen wrench and 2 combination wrenches). Nissan also sells a floormat that will cover the middle and rear section once you remove the center console.
@9:00 that huge gap is unacceptable along with the misaligned wood paneling. This is not a cheap SUV to let interior fit-and-finish slide, esp for an Infinity.
IMHO, the Armada is a much better deal. Almost the same interior for considerably less and quite a bit less than the Tahoe, etc. The down side is the dated design...
Aye I think they are just biding their time until they can release their electric/hybrid platforms in 2021-2022, I suspect it will be much like the early 2000's where they have a large list of awesome products and then they get lazy and don't upgrade them for 10 years again.
Tell me about it. I got 2018 Q50S and the infotainment inside is depressing to use and look at it. No Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, laggy, no customizations, ancient looking Navigation with a scrolling smoothness of a 10 years old android. It is a joke, but I will manage with it for another two years (it is a lease). I cant wait to dump it.
I love this SUV......except for the ancient tech inside. Love the look, the interior materials, the power and the ride quality. Easy to see why it sells so well. But Infiniti slacked off in the refresh, and didn't update the tech inside. They rested on their laurels. For less than $70k, it is a strong buy, but for anything more, it needs better tech to compete.
I just purchased a one year old QX80 with 24000 miles on it for 41000. That is about 15000 less than a comparable Navigator or Escalade. I drove all 3 of these vehicles and the QX80, by far, out drove the other two. When I purchase a vehicle I care about how it drives, it is a car by the way, rather than the screens that I can get on it. It is a great value and gives a wonderful ride. I truly think the Navigator and Escalade are way overpriced.
The QX80 is an excellent traditional body on farm SUV, not a large crossover like the X7, A7, Durango, etc. I have ‘15 model and love it. Yes Apple car play would be nice but not necessary.
Nothing new for Nissan, they are really stretching lifecycles... just look at the Frontier. My great-grandad used to pull one with his oxen across the great plains.
You might save $20K or more compared to the competition, but you're still spending $60-70K for a "new" 15-year-old vehicle. No car is a good investment, but this is just throwing a ton of good money after bad.
Never really filmed the front interior in one sweep. Just close ups of bits and pieces. I was interested, but I'll have to find it in a different review.
I have Titan with the same engine. I love the engine and transmission. I drove the Armada and would buy that any day before dropping $70-$90K on the Infiniti version.
This has nothing on the Navigator or Escalade but has almost everything on the LX. The quality isn’t all that differentiated from that of the Nissan Armada. I hope they take a page out of Lincoln’s playbook and give this a thorough redesign because the QX80 is a strong seller regardless
Waaay too expensive when you could get a Navigator. The tech is old, the engine is old, the styling is old. And Alex gives it all these "A"??? Sounds like politics to me. But I will be fair: Doug DeMuro also likes to play politics with his evaluation so that it fits in his graph where he wants it to fit. But overall, the facts are there and most times I agree. Today, I feel the grades did not match the facts.
I believe there’s a lot to be had with this SUV, but I do not believe the price is reflective of the datedness and relative obsolescence of some aspects. For the money there are objectively nicer and more modern vehicles, but incentivized buyers that need the capabilities of a truck with added premium features and people-carrying capacity, it’s not a bad option.
The entire underlying architecture is dated in design and implementation, and much of technology the driver interacts with has largely remained unchanged in its past several iterations growing only marginally more comprehensive and usable as updates have rolled out. Although many appreciate the traditional body-on-frame architecture, this is a thoroughly traditional implementation of that design and has scarcely improved throughout the QX’s lifetime. The vehicle rides smoothly, but wallows. It is a vague, indirect driving experience that does isolate the driver, but also numbs them of all feel and feedback. It has poor road manners and generally handles itself without true composure. Although it can be said that the QX implements an independent suspension design in both the front and rear, the inherent drawbacks of using the old architecture stand. The interiors are busy, not necessarily complex, but not altogether very intuitive, and that extends to the technology. Interacting with a lot of Infiniti’s systems can be cumbersome when you really dig into the feature sets, and they’re just not as polished and refined as some of the competition. Although Infiniti has paced with the competition in including more technologies, so take that for what you will. Where the experience really hurts is in price to performance ratios, and I mean that in more than just raw numbers; I mean the whole experience (towing capability notwithstanding, as the benefit to using the traditional V8 and BoF design allow for exceptional numbers in that regard). Infiniti materials, fitment, quality, and attention to detail has always been good. Never outstanding, never really above par, just good. Their prices are unjustifiably high for the mediocre numbers and average (for the class) experience, and I would largely class this as high premium than true luxury for that reason. You can find a much better experience in its Lexus rival, and most of the more contemporary competition from Lincoln, Cadillac, Volvo, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and any number of other marques. Obviously, it’s up to the buyers at the end of the day. I’m generally a luxury car buyer, not a luxury SUV buyer, but as a luxury buyer in general, this has never been a consideration, nor do I ever expect it to be, unless Nissan pulls their act together from the bottom up.
I think the styling is okay on this vehicle... It's a bit overdone, but not bad. I prefer the current Nissan Armada, however. I've been watching Alex's videos, and I think the Armada is the overall SUV I'm leaning toward.
This Infiniti is bad ass. Kicks any german and american SUV to the curb. Styling, acceleration, and price. Wonderful combo. And I'm an Escalade fanboy. Go QX80 go!
I agreed with an acceleration and price... how must of new tech. Do you waned? when daily drive 10-20 or 30 some miles a day you will never have a chance Dial into it. One thing I can tell it must must Comfy to Drove on...
Miles better than an Escalade in terms of overall quality, but still just a gigantic manbearpig of a machine. It's very luxurious...and I'd loathe having to drive it daily.
It will be great if the rear gate is a Clam shell design similar to the Lexus LX. Its great for tailgating or just hanging out at the park or in the mountains.
Millenials dont like this car because it doesn't have a stupid tablet that sticks out of the dash. Never mind the bulletproof drivetrain and luxurious ride. Yep its sucks because it doesn't have a stupid looking tablet glued on the dash.
someone who is shopping for a lx570 or land cruiser won't even look at this, its not even comparable - I didn't... its a very nice suv but not something I would keep for more than 3 years. But unlike what the video suggested I would buy this over the GLS well because from a reliability standpoint. The LX/land cruiser you keep for 10+ years. there is a reason why they cost much more and they have one of the best resale value of any SUV outside of the G wagon.
These are MBS seats which you can order for any QX56/QX80 of any MY..., probably the next redesign/facelift of QX80 will be an adding of Larte bumpers as standard))
We rented the QX80 to drive to Encinitas. We felt the space utilization inside the car was terrible. We went with 4 kids, 2 of which requiring car seats. However, the back row only has one set of anchors for the car seats. So we were forced to put the car seats in the center captain seats. Our 10 & 12 yo kids were squished into the back row. Also, since the center seats couldn’t move forwards/backwards, we were forced to put our food cooler into the trunk space, even though there would’ve been plenty of space in the main cabin if we could scoot the center seat back. The trunk space was so small that we could barely squeeze a standard sized Yeti. So, even though this is a big SUV, we were forced to squeeze kids in the back row, and could barely even fit anything in the trunk space. Other than that, the SUV was awesome to drive. Handling was great and felt really safe driving. Drive experience is an 8, but space/storage utilization is like a 4 out of 10. Infotainment is really dated for a car this expensive, but has all the necessities.
lol that door panel gap is just silly. For a “luxury” vehicle it should never have such issues with fit/finish. And even though it’s been said a million times, the infotainment is absolutely horrendous. At this point it would be better for them to just steal the infotainment from the updated Nissan systems.
The exterior looks great, other than the rear turn signals on the bumper. However, the Interior is honestly super outdated, just like the rest of their lineup IMO
I looked at the 2017 Infinity after my Acura was totaled. I was shocked at the older technology and lack of safety features I thought all new cars would have. Bought a Ford Fusion Platinum instead. It had all the latest features The large Infinity does look very impressive. Don’t understand the lack of updating.
Considering buying a used 2020 soon, any advice, comments, etc. whats the engine longevity & transmission, will be my kid howler, travel rig, etc. thanks in advance.
Nissan is the laziest car company on the plane. Nothing fresh, act like full revisions are an act of God. Well on it's way to becoming the Plymouth of Japanese car companies.
Witness their now-jailed former CEO. It's just corrupt from top to bottom. In business just to enrich a select few with zero interest in customers or employees.
@@alliejr Yep. A classic example of Gen-X'ers' total ruination of the business world. But to them, willful stupidity and poor quality work are the way "mature and experienced" adults live their lives.
I like almost everything about this SUV, except for the turn signals on the rear bumper. What an absurd design choice. The model before the 2018 redesign was better in that regard.
Turn signals at the bottom of the bumper???? Infiniti is not the first to adopt the stupid design that moves the turn signals down on the rear end but this is the most extreme version I've seen. Apart from being vulnerable to the slightest parking parking lot collision, don't designers recognize the huge reduction in rear end collisions when the high mounted third brake light was mandated some years ago? Putting warning indicators in the sight line of a driver following the vehicle is common sense. Third seat room? Looks to be about the same as my KIA Sorento in a vehicle a foot and a half longer. Cargo space behind the third row for luggage/gear 5-7 passengers need for longer trips? Less than most midsize crossovers. No Apple CarPlay/Android Auto? What year is this? Who buys/leases the QX80? That's not meant sarcastically. I don't tow so perhaps I'm missing the value that Alex notes on that score but even for those who drag their homes around behind their vehicles the QX80 doesn't appear to be the best choice. So is the QX80 just a placeholder for Infiniti in a market space where it needs an offering but not worth putting any significant effort into competing?
Say what you want but every year they increase sales over the prior year... same with QX60.. yes it's the same basic vehicle since 2013 with no major upgrades, only minor refreshes, but is now selling some months as many as the Pathfinder which can be found at $20,000-$30,000 less .... major updates to infotainment system across the board is coming in 2021 and with that all models will have been fully redesigned by 2022.
You wait by The year 2019 Infinity will redesign the QX80. It will be a proper Crossover with a Turbo Six cylinder along with a new eight cylinders engine. The iPhone will be able to integrate with the SUV . Otter than that this 2012 model is nice. . Written on April 15th 2012. Guess I was wrong
Nissan's obsolete engineering is unjustified at any price. This infotainment would be unacceptable in a Versa. Don't forget that Escalade and Navigator are also just chromed up Suburban and Expedition.
Alex, I think body-on-frame vehicles should really just be compared to others of the same basic design. If I hit the jackpot and had to use part of it to buy a 3 ton SUV, I would take the LX , Land Cruiser or a Sequoia over any choice from Nissan or the Detroit 3 ;) #NoComparison
Can someone please tell infinity that this is pretty much today's Hummer. Take this out back and put it down. My lawd that interior infortainment is like a flip phone.
You'd think Nissan would get serious and stay current especially in this segment. This vehicle in 2007 as it sits here would be innovative and be respectable giving the luxuriant nameplate. Nowadays this vehicle is dated and overly priced and not reliable and only uses premium fuel or the engine will suffer. Look at Lexus, Lincoln and Cadillac for big luxury suv's.
Sister inlaw had a 2012 after having a few Infiniti's and the QX80 was the worse. The dealership sent them on the road with a bad engine that was never fixed properly. The delaership group put them in a 2019 GL550.

I totally agree with you about the turn signals on the rear bumper. What a stupid (and unsafe) design choice.

Beautiful design this car looks greAt
Such a huge vehicle but the third row is a joke. The depreciation is huge too.
It is a glorified Nissan so naturally it depreciates rapidly.
Alex, base Infiniti QX80 for $63,000 or fully loaded Nissan Armada Platinum for $52,000? If it's your money, which do you buy?
This SUV really isn't worth the price unless you just want to pay more for a vehicle that just seems dated.
My mother has a 2015 QX80 & the front seats are terribly uncomfortable
I love this suv I don’t like any other suv
I preferred the the QX80 before the refresh. If your going to make an ugly SUV, own it and make the ugliest SUV!
you're*
By matte chrome does he mean silver? I think he means silver.
Matte chrome is jus less reflective but not silver more like aluminum kinda in between.
Nissan's obsolete engineering is unjustified at any price. This infotainment would be unacceptable in a Versa. Don't forget that Escalade and Navigator are also just chromed up Suburban and Expedition.
My friends sister has one. The interior brought me back to 2012 lol
Infiniti is so lazy, they are just banking on old non-car people to buy this with their retirement money...
Saw just that an old retired couple leaving hotel thats the reason wanted to check it out. Very disappointing interior.
Faster than a RDX 2.0T!
Infiniti: *promises a better design inside and out*
Interior: *screams 2005*
Car enthusiasts: *hippity hoppity you're now my roasting property*
This vehicle is so hard to find on the road because there isn't any.
Body on frame vehicles really only seem to be advantageous if you're going to be doing heavy towing.
Can someone please tell infinity that this is pretty much today's Hummer. Take this out back and put it down. My lawd that interior infortainment is like a flip phone.
How's reliability on the QX80
Alex, you mentioned how the Escalade is getting replaced soon, but nothing about the new GLS, just came out.
Great review as usual!
Nice lookin ride.
Sister inlaw had a 2012 after having a few Infiniti's and the QX80 was the worse. The dealership sent them on the road with a bad engine that was never fixed properly. The delaership group put them in a 2019 GL550.
Classy in white. 👍
Just picked up a 2019 for $40,000 with 14,000 miles.
Lol for real ?
The 22 inch wheels look out of proportion somehow
Beautiful inside and out. Just outdated tech
