- How to Install New Stringers Into a #jetboat
This video covers the process to install new stringers into a fiberglass jet boat, start to finish. I will cover the steps that you will need to take to position the stringers, get them cut & installed & finally fiberglassed in.
I originally set out to film & edit the intallation of my stringers as one video. While I was editing the video I realized that it was getting longer than I wanted, so I made the decison to cut the video into two segments. I have already posted those two segments on my channel & they can be found at the links below:

Since I went through the work to edit this video I decided to post it to the channel. This is the same content as the other two videos.
If you haven’t, I encourage you to subscribe to the channel & turn on notifications, so you can be notified of my new videos. I hope that you find this series of videos to be helpful for your project, or just enjoyable to watch. If you have comments, suggestions, or tips that you would like to share please leave them in the comments section. I would love to hear what you have to say about the project & video…

About AutoTechNick:
Growing up in rural Oregon I was always around Hot Rods & Race Cars. I imagine my early exposure to this culture ignited a spark of interest in cars, which remains my passion to this day.
🎓 I am a proud Alumni of Wyoming Technical Institute, where I studied Automotive Technology, Performance Engine Building & Street Rod Fabrication. In addition to “Wyo Tech”, I graduated from the BMW Service Technician Education Program. More commonly known as BMW S.T.E.P.
🏎️ I spent nearly 10 years working in various BMW dealerships as a Master Technician. After a move back home to the PNW I found myself no longer servicing German-made machines, but now working with Italians. I spent nearly another 10 years as a Ferrari Master Technician, & Shop Foreman at a local Ferrari dealership.
🏆 I was selected by Ferrari as one of 12 technicians worldwide to compete in the “Ferrari Testa Rossa Awards”, consecutively for 4 years in a row. Finishing in 3rd place in 2016, & in 2019 I was able to place in 1st. Winning the competition & earning the title of the Top Ferrari Technician in the world!
🚀 As my time with Ferrari came to an end, a new career path awaited me…. Aerospace. I am currently working at Blue Origin, helping to build & develop the BE-3PM and BE-U rocket engines.
With my new career path, I needed an outlet for my automotive passion, thus the reason for this channel…

Easily one of the best explinations of this on youtube.
When you said “quick and not messy” I got quite a laugh. Your attention to detail is impressive.
excellent work! you build stringers better than most professional boat builders, hence the reason a lot of boats need work done to them later in their life. 10/10
🙏 Thank you!!
~ Nick
I really appreciate your attention to detail. Good job!
I learned something today.
Glad it was helpful!

Remeber the tips of the glass is its adhesion strength. Better to put the four " first and taper the layers out. Also, a layer of 3)4 oz mat over the bi cloth will flatten the burs out. Boats do better being able to flex. As a speed boat, id done one layer bi cloth and 10 oz cloth over the top with 3/4 oz mat under the 10 oz. I rebuild boat in Hawaii. For heavy fishing boats i use three layers bi cloth and 24 oz woven over the top.
Depending on the thickness of the hull, spacing the stringers with a small gap helps spread the load from stress cracks forming along the stringers. But im sure this boat will be fine for many years.
awesome nice work this is on my list 1956 fiberglass 13 foot wizard Thank you
Thank you! Best of luck on your project!

About time someone is sharing how to repair these hot rod boats!! Good job dude keep up the videos!! Hoping you can show us how to install the floors on the new stringers. Hate how they rott so quickly. Need to know how to fiberglass them in or keep them from rotting. Thanks again. Thumbs up
Thank you! I have already installed my floors, and that video is also uploaded. I only ran wood the distance between the two stringers instead of a full floor. But hopefully, that video will give you some ideas for your project.
~ Nick
Man, you are an artist bro. Beautiful work.
Thanks! Much appreciated!
I made the ones for my 21' checkmate, the floor and transom and I only used one sheet covering the stringer and 4" outwards because they are not so thick and they were very solid for the knees of the transom if I used 3 sheets like you did 👍👍
Great video, exactly the detailed info and technique I was looking for. Ripping out the fiberglass floor and stringers in my 18’ fiberglass boat. Just subbed!
Best of luck with your project!!
~ Nick
Those long boards/planks are realy big money sinks... I remember pricing out my first boat design, how each long chine or batten added $100+ to the cost with no effort.
Thank you mate this is the videos I have been looking for. So helpful
Absolutely!
This has been so helpful
Right on! Glad I was able to help you out with your project!
~ Nick
That was a lot of fancy work to get lines on stringers just to take a jig saw and grinder to it 😂
Man, when you phrase it like that 🤣😂
Great video
Thank you.
@@AutoTechNick it's been a year have u got to take it out on the lake yet?
@@marksrepairj623 😔 Not yet. I am currently working through rigging the boat. I'm pretty far behind where I wanted to be because I ended up investing a ton of time with the gel coat in the bilge.
~ Nick
@@AutoTechNick yeah I know what u mean 100% just got my 6year jet boat project out on the lake after lots of time and money. Worth it tho
Love this video series!! Super knowledgeable and I love the attention to detail. I’ve probably watched each video at least twice. I am currently redoing all flooring and supports on my 1979 Pioneer Outlaw. I have the same gel coating problem on my boat where one of the bunks has rubbed through and I can see light through the boat. Are you planning to address your gel coat issue or just run it like that? Are there any potential problems with the gel coat being rubbed through?
I love it!!! Thanks for the support! Hopefully some of the stuff I cover in my videos helps you out with the Outlaw project.
As for the gel coat, yes I will fix the area where it rubbed through. I haven’t fully decided on how deep I’ll go into the repair since it is nearly impossible to see when in the water or on the trailer. I figure the worst case scenario is I’ll just brush some gel coat over it. I may go fancier than that, undetermined.

LOVE THIS VIDEO SERIES on the stringers. I have to do mine and these videos will help. Again THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! I see you took your pump intake out, like I did. Are you going to do a video on setting the pump intake angle? Are you going to be setting the pump back so the clean out is out past the back of the boat so you can put a pop off valve on it? I ask because I feel since I am this far into my boat I might as well do a pump set back.
Thanks Tony! It’s nice to hear that these videos are helpful to you and your project.
Yes, I most certainly will be making a video that outlines the installation of the pump intake! As far as a pump set back, I am not 100% decided on that yet. That is something that I am seriously kicking around. I have had several people ask the same question as well. Setting the pump back adds some expense and complexity to the project, so I just need to determine if I am willing to do that at the moment.

@@AutoTechNick WELP I will be watching and taking notes for what ever you decide and do.
Will you be installing a floor over this? Would love to see that process as well
Robert, yes I will be installing a wood floor. And I plan to cover that in a video as well.
I have to replace stringers and floor in my jetboat this year and have been brain storming different ideas on how to do and incorporate different things. With that being said, I'm watching your videos on how you went about your project, and although I commend you on how you went about doing your water drains on the back of your stringers, I was thinking about molding in a piece of 3/8" PVC and glassing that into the stringers as another "fail safe" for piece of mind that no water would ever get back into and rot the stringers. What are your thoughts on that?
I did have similar thoughts to incorporate water drains, in a manor like you mentioned. The only downside I could think of would ensuring a good bond the the PVC. Fiberglass will likely not adhere well. Plus the additional time and complexity. However I do agree that a setup like that would be more effective to keep the water away from the wood.
~ Nick
You went through a lot of work to get those center lines figured out. Would it be possible just to measure the width, half that and use a laser level to get the line then chalk over the laser line?
Yes and no. The real problem with finding the centerline is the fact that nothing on the boat is symmetrical or square. We're talking about differences of 3/8" or more. So, it is really a matter of pulling measurements from multiple areas with multiple techniques so you can get the best average.
If the boat was symmetrical and square, the process would be much simpler.

I buy a 1992 sea ray mx 18.0ft I want to change over to a jet power boat with a Berkley Jr stead of a JG or should I use jc-a I miss my 22 ft jet boat and I'm trying to convert from propeller to jet
For me a 12JG would be the one I would prefer. I feel it is the best price vs availability.

So fiberglass is strong enough to glue stringers to transom.??? I was going to push stringer threw new sheet of transom board. Then fiberglass them in.??
Between the fiberfiller that is on the butt of the stringer and the multiple layers of 1708 that I tabbed them to the transom with, they are very secure and solid.
